"We believe that The Episcopal Church has clarified all outstanding questions," stated the advisory report from the lay-clergy Joint Standing Committee. The report was written for the Anglican Communion’s spiritual leader, Archbishop of Canterbury Dr. Rowan Williams, who is struggling to prevent a schism in the 77-million-member global church body. The Episcopal Church is the U.S. branch of Anglicanism and deepened divisions in the Anglican Communion when it consecrated openly gay bishop V. Gene Robinson of New Hampshire in 2003. The team challenged and encouraged the missionaries working among the Uriai people of Papua New Guinea and Lisa was officially approved to begin translating God's Word into the Uriai language. "They spurred us on to dive deeper into the way that our folks view the spiritual realm," wrote Lisa, "and gave us insight as to the best plan for the Uriai church." MARIE, Mich., Oct. 1 /Christian News wire/ -- As thousands of monks in Burma are raising their voices in protest of the country's oppressive regime, Christian Freedom International (CFI), a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing relief aid and advocacy for persecuted Christians around the world, is calling on Christians everywhere to pray for the perilous situation. The civil unrest in recent weeks has drawn the world's attention to a nation that has long since been troubled by grinding poverty and a violent military junta that has held its tyrannical power since the 1960's. Buddhist monks, who represent the highest moral authority in Burma, have been instrumental in leading a series of peaceful, pro-democracy demonstrations in cities throughout the country. But this time, the actor will be on the big screen asking one of life's biggest questions: "Were we designed, or are we simply the end result of an ancient mud puddle struck by lightning?" That's right. Evolution – and the explosive debate over its virtual monopoly on America's public school classrooms – is the focus of the film "Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed." In the movie, Stein, who is also a lawyer, economist, former presidential speechwriter, author and social commentator, is stunned by what he discovers – an elitist scientific es... 2007-10-03 12:12:00 Author: Eric Subject: The Church Moves On and Women Move InPosted: Wed Oct 03, 2007 6:12 am (GMT -4) The Church Moves On and Women Move In IT HAS been too long coming, but the announcement by the Anglican Church's highest legal authority that there is nothing in the church's constitution that would prevent the consecration of a woman priest as a bishop in Australia is a milestone in the history of the church and one that removes the last impediment to full equality for women within it. By the standards of worldwide Anglicanism, where thousands of women are priests and many are bishops, the ruling by the appellate tribunal is well overdue and finally erases the fiction that women, just because they are women, are not equipped to occupy this higher office. Until this announcement by the head of the Anglican Church, Dr Philip Aspinall, in Brisbane last Friday, female clergy in Australia were discriminated against simply because of their gender. While they were allowed to be de... More About: News , Events , Current Events

"We have eager students," writes missionary Japp Oosterhuis, "we have nice facilities and we have the privilege of supporting God's work in Papua New Guinea but there is one vital element missing -- teachers!" There are 45 children from kindergarten to grade 10 whose parents are involved in reaching tribal people with the Gospel. These church planting missionaries are dependent on the school to provide an education for their children. Several teachers are going on home assignment, including the school principal, during the 2008-2009 school year. Recently, Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary (SWBTS) began offering a Bachelor of Arts in humanities with a concentration in homemaking. SWBTS president Dr. Paige Patterson said the course is a way to help solidify and define the biblical roles of the family and home, although he said that families are free to make their own decisions about whether a wife will work outside the home. The course has been blasted by many -- not only in the secular world, but also in evangelical circles, including some Southern Baptist officials. Patterson says Southern Baptists are swimming against the tide of "feminism," and that society... More About: News , Events , Current Events , Current

Though we once regarded Christ in this way, we do so no longer. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come! All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men's sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. We are therefore Christ's ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ's behalf: Be reconciled to God. 2 Corinthians 5:16-20 NIV Listen (MP3) Read more... 2007-10-02 10:00:00 Author: NewsFeeder Subject: Two or ThreePosted: Tue Oct 02, 2007 4:00 am (GMT -4) When a book titled Life Together landed on my desk as a college student, the subtitle promising "a discussion of Christian fellowship," to say the least I was skeptical. Wary of Christian culture and preferring to remain on the fringes, I saw fellowship primarily as a means of enclosing oneself in stagnant, self-affirming circles. I was weary of feel-good religion; I was also bothered by the charade of unity carried on in pluralistic crowds. But the book was given to me, and the giver was insistent that its author, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, was someone unafraid to be real. Life Together was written in the thick of a mounting Nazi regime during Bonhoeffer's unique experience with 25 vicars in an underground seminary. It took me only a few pages to realize that he was speaking with weighted words on a topic I had unfairly deemed weightless and suspicious. Almost immediately I was con... More About: Inspiration

Its creator, Carnegie Mellon University professor Scott Fahlman, suggested the symbol in 1982 in an online discussion about the limits of online humor. "I propose the following character sequence for joke markers: :-)," he wrote. "Read it sideways."(1) The rest is history. Fahlman's smileys spread from his classroom to other classrooms, from universities to the corporate world, and eventually around the world. The bureau had said it was prompted to remove the materials after a 2004 Department of Justice report mentioned that religious books that incite violence could infiltrate chapel libraries. After the details of the removal became widely known this month, Republican lawmakers, liberal Christians and evangelical talk shows all criticized the government for creating a list of acceptable religious books. Texas researchers found that college students were less likely to lose their religion than others in their age group, 18 to 25 years old. Because of the number of cases of anti-Christian violence reported, Open Doors' Carl Moeller disagrees with the findings. The All India Christian Council disputes the report saying the incidence of anti-Christian violence is much higher than available statistics indicate, as most cases are not reported to the police and are ignored by the media. The report covered the period from July 1, 2006 to June 30, 2007 and says the government of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA), led by the Indian National Congress or Congress Party, "generally respected" religious freedom in practice. For one thing, it is more than 800 pages long and has 971 endnotes. It is true that all the familiar figures and events of the Hebrew Scriptures or Old Testament are here: Adam and Eve, Cain and Abel, Noah, Abraham, Moses, David and the prophets. But the book, written by James L. Kugel and just published by the Free Press, also propounds a stark and challenging thesis, namely that contemporary Bible readers are confronted with two radically different ways of approaching Scripture and that both approaches are impressive and admirable — and fundamentally incompatible. Professor Kugel, it should be noted, is a rare master of both approaches. Now teaching in Israel, he was for years one of the most popular teachers at Harvard. When atte... Amy Orr-Ewing We live in a context of spiritual longing. Many people are searching for that which will satisfy an inner craving for meaning and significance. The artist Damian Hirst recently said this: "Why do I feel so important when I'm not? Nothing is important and everything is important. I do not know why I am here but I am glad that I am. I'd rather be here than not. I am going to die and I want to live forever, I can't escape that fact, and I can't let go of that desire." But somehow this does not always translate into people finding Christ and starting to follow him. There is a dizzying array of options when it comes to religion, and the culture around us says that they are all equally valid.
