Author: NewsFeeder Subject: The Road to NoteworthyPosted: Fri Sep 14, 2007 4:00 am (GMT -4) The Road to Noteworthy Jill Carattini Sometimes a newspaper headline tells as much as the article itself. A recent caption confessing "India Embraces Superlatives" promptly won my attention. The article summarized the growing obsession in India with holding Guinness World Records. "How do you stand out in a land with a billion people?" the article inquires. The answers are as extreme as the superlatives themselves: longest backwards run, fastest drinker of a bottle of ketchup, smallest writing on a mustard seed, longest ear hair ever grown. "We are desperate to be acknowledged by the world as being worthy," says a columnist for the Times of India. "We hunt for any signs that the external world recognizes us, and then we celebrate them." To distinguish oneself in one of the biggest crowds in the world, embracing superlatives is imperative. ...

Author: NewsFeeder Subject: The Sovereign Posted: Fri Sep 14, 2007 4:00 am (GMT -4) The Sovereign Jill Carattini For years, I never used the word "sovereign" as a noun. I knew it could be used in this way--"Like a sovereign," writes Shakespeare "he radiates worth, his eyes lending a double majesty"--I just never did. But trial and tragedy have a way of waking us to words and realities overlooked. There was a time that whenever I closed my eyes to pray I was leveled by the image of the throne; it was empty. It was somewhere in the midst of this recurrent vision that I realized my neglect of the noun. Was God indeed the Sovereign who spoke and listened? I had often used the word as an adjective. But adjectives, like good moods, seem to come and go. The prophet Jeremiah depicts a Sovereign that cannot come and go simply because He is. God's sovereignty is not a coat that can be taken off when all is going well or when all is going poorly. ...

These groups prepare the way so people more readily receive the spiritual hope revealed in Scripture. If one of you says to them, 'Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,' but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it? Author: NewsFeeder Subject: Daily Manna from the Net for Thursday , September 13, 2007Posted: Fri Sep 14, 2007 4:00 am (GMT -4) We who are strong ought to bear with the failings of the weak and not to please ourselves. Each of us should please his neighbor for his good, to build him up. For even Christ did not please himself but, as it is written: 'The insults of those who insult you have fallen on me.' For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through endurance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope. May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you a spirit of unity among yourselves as you follow Christ Jesus, so that with one heart and mouth you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Author: NewsFeeder Subject: Homeland Security Posted: Fri Sep 14, 2007 4:00 am (GMT -4) Homeland Security Margaret Manning Since the attacks of September 11, 2001, security has become a billion dollar industry. In 2003, the government designated 37.7 billion dollars for homeland security. Indeed, this became the President's top budget priority and remains a priority to this day.(1) As a result, businesses are cashing in on the security industry. Richard Norton, the executive director of the International Biometric Industry Association, calls the security sector a "gold rush." Businesses are scrambling to corner the security market; new industries are springing up to develop new technology from fingerprint scanners and voice identifiers to biometric identifiers on visas. Three hundred eighty million was spent on visa technology alone in 2003.(2) Of course, you and I have our own personal safety systems as well. We buy cars with advanced security systems, ...

High Court: Doctors Need Not Tell Pregnant Patients 'Abortion Kills' Eric Young A doctor does not have to tell a woman considering an abortion that her embryo is an “existing human being,” the New Jersey Supreme court ruled unanimously Wednesday. New Jersey Justice Barry T. Albin, who wrote for the court, expressed that the justices were “sympathetic to the deep pain [the] plaintiff has suffered in the aftermath of the termination of her pregnancy,” but noted that “[o]n the profound issue of when life begins, this Court cannot drive public policy in one direction by the engine of the common law ….” “[W]e do not find that the common law commands a physician to inform a pregnant patient that an embryo is an existing, living human being and that an abortion results in the killing of a family member,” he wrote. As a result, the 5-0 Supreme Court...

President Vladimir Putin has accepted the resignation of his prime minister, Mikhail Fradkov, and nominated a relatively unknown as replacement: Viktor Zubkov . He is head of the Federal Financial Monitoring Service, a financial market watchdog. Analysts had been expecting Putin to nominate someone who would go on to be a leading presidential candidate, but it is unclear if Zubkov is Putin's preferred choice of successor. This may be another "control" issue for Putin. At least that's what Russian Ministries' Sergey Rakhuba expects: "There will be more control expansion within the society, although there are some unknowns." In recent years, Russian officials have tried and succee...

Author: Eric Subject: Christians Urged to Pray for Muslims During RamadanPosted: Wed Sep 12, 2007 10:36 pm (GMT -4) Christians Urged to Pray for Muslims During Ramadan Jennifer Riley Christians have been urged to pray for Muslims during Ramadan, Islam’s holiest month, which in some countries begins Wednesday. During Ramadan, Muslims around the world will fast, pray, give to charity, and put more effort into following the teachings of Islam. From dawn to dusk, Muslims are required to abstain from food, drink and sex. They will also try to overcome emotions such as anger, envy, greed, lust, sarcasm, and gossip in their effort for self-control. “With Islam in the news almost every night, the time is now to begin praying that God would draw Muslims to Himself,” wrote Greg Yoder, executive director of Mission Network News , which is organizing the Muslim prayer effort. Sammy Tippit, an evangelist who is focusing on reaching Muslims, explained the significance of praying for ...

The survey measuring attitudes toward freedom of religion, speech and the press found that 55% believe erroneously that the Constitution establishes a Christian nation. In the survey, which is conducted annually by the First Amendment Center, a non-partisan educational group, three out of four people who identify themselves as evangelical or Republican believe that the Constitution establishes a Christian nation. About half of Democrats and independents do. Most respondents, 58%, say teachers in public schools should be allowed to lead prayers. Author: Patrick Subject: Overcoming Sin-filled Prop ositionPosted: Wed Sep 12, 2007 9:27 am (GMT -4) Wow, It's been a little while since I made an actual post on the site. It's long over-due, but here it goes. I received a proposition yesterday for sex from a girl I have known for many years. I've signed up for the Army and I guess because there's a possibility that we may lose touch or that she may never see me again, she decided to offer her body to me "for free". A year or two ago I would have been weak and jumped right into it. Today is a very different story. Here's how the general dialog went between us. girl - well, you're looking good today me - you too, as always girl - I got a question for you me - shoot girl - do you want to have some "no-strings attached casual sex" before you leave? me - to answer your question, do I want to.....Of course!....but the real question is "am I going to".....and that answer is no....

Three of five dioceses in Zimbabwe had "unanimously agreed" to sever ties with dioceses in the Central African province, saying it will not "stand with homosexuals," a cleric at Harare diocese, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, told Agence France-Presse. The cleric noted that according to the Diocesan Act adopted by the Harare diocese in August and put into effect on Aug. 4, the Zimbabwe church body will "dissociate and sever relationship with any individual, group of people, organization, institution, diocese, province or people who indulge in or sympathize or compromises with homosexuality." Troop withdrawal, Iraq government progress or lack thereof, and Sunni-Shiite violence are highly popular topics of discussion. Very little, however, has been said about one of Iraq’s most endangered communities – the indigenous Christian population. Since the 2003 U.S.-led offensive, nearly 2.2 million Iraqis have left the country. Christians, who account for only three percent of the Iraq’s population, are estimated to make up nearly half of all the refugees fleeing the country, according to the U.N. The field is still very fluid.” Thompson, a former Tennessee senator and an actor on the hit TV drama “Law & Order,” has portrayed himself as a conservative candidate opposed to abortion and gay “marriage” – two key political concerns of evangelical conservatives. However, under closer scrutiny, Thompson has been seen by some Christian leaders as...

The provocative move reflects a growing rift between traditionalists and a younger generation raised on a diet of Dutch tolerance. The Committee for Ex-Muslims promises to campaign for freedom of religion but has already upset the Islamic and political Establishments for stirring tensions among the million-strong Muslim community in the Netherlands. Ehsan Jami, the committee’s founder, who rejected Islam after the attack on the twin towers in 2001, has become the most talked-about public figure in the Netherlands. Author: Eric Subject: Prisons Purging Books on Faith From LibrariesPosted: Tue Sep 11, 2007 10:59 pm (GMT -4) Prisons Purging Books on Faith From Libraries Laurie Goodstein Behind the walls of federal prisons nationwide, chaplains have been quietly carrying out a systematic purge of religious books and materials that were once available to prisoners in chapel libraries. The chaplains were directed by the Bureau of Prisons to clear the shelves of any books, tapes, CDs and videos that are not on a list of approved resources. In some prisons, the chaplains have recently dismantled libraries that had thousands of texts collected over decades, bought by the prisons, or donated by churches and religious groups. Some inmates are outraged. Two of them, a Christian and an Orthodox Jew, in a federal prison camp in upstate New York, filed a class-action lawsuit last month claiming the bureau’s actions violate their rights to the free exercise of religion as guaranteed by the First...

Author: NewsFeeder Subject: Playing Favor ites Posted: Sat Sep 08, 2007 4:00 am (GMT -4) A friend of mine describes coming to terms as a little girl with the sad thought that she would never be God's favorite. Knowing that God had so many children, knowing that good fathers love equally, she knew her hope of being the favorite was never going to pan out. When I first heard her say this, I smiled at the idea of a little girl worrying so seriously about God's fairness and how it affected her. God is much more often accused of being un-fair. But the more I thought about my friend's disappointment, the more I think this is exactly the difficulty most of us have with God-- although most of us will never admit it. Yet here, the unguarded honesty of a child voices what we do not: If we are being honest, no one really wants to be seen as equal to all others. The desire to be the best at something, to exceed the expectations of those around us, to be known for bei...

Author: NewsFeeder Subject: Who Am I ?Posted: Sat Sep 08, 2007 4:00 am (GMT -4) Many world religions today accept the man Jesus within their belief system. Muslims call him a prophet; some Buddhists consider him a bodhisattva, and New Age practitioners call him a social activist. Amidst such diverse claims of the identity of Jesus, who is the real Jesus? This reminds me of Jesus's own question to his disciples in Matthew 16--namely, "Who do people say that I am?" A brief look at the backdrop of his question would help us better grasp the significance of this passage. First, consider the location. The incident occurred at a place some miles northeast of the Sea of Galilee in the domain of Herod Philip.(1) It was also the reputed birthplace of the god of Pan--the god of nature and fertility--and he was staunchly worshipped there. The surrounding area was also filled with temples of classical pagan religion. Towering over all of these was the new temple to th...

Author: NewsFeeder Subject: By Its Cover Posted: Sat Sep 08, 2007 4:00 am (GMT -4) In a recent study included in the Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine children were shown to overwhelmingly prefer the taste of food that comes in McDonald's wrappers. The study had preschoolers sample identical foods in packaging from McDonald's and in matched, but unbranded, packaging. The kids were then asked if the food tasted the same or if one tasted better. The unmarked foods lost the taste test every time. Even apple juice, carrots, and milk tasted better to the kids when taken from the familiar wrappings of the Golden Arches. "This study demonstrates simply and elegantly that advertising literally brainwashes young children into a baseless preference for certain food products," said a physician from Yale's School of Medicine. "Children, it seems, literally do judge a food by its cover. And they prefer the cover they know."(1) The scien...
