Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses. In the sight of God, who gives life to everything, and of Christ Jesus, who while testifying before Pontius Pilate made the good confession, I charge you to keep this command without spot or blame until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ, 1 Timothy 6:11-14 NIV Listen (MP3) Read more... Author: Eric Subject: Study : TV Family Hour Anything ButPosted: Fri Sep 07, 2007 10:20 pm (GMT -4) Study: TV Family Hour Anything But Nathan Black Family hour on prime time television is no longer the family hour parents can enjoy with their children without concerns over objectionable content, a new study found. Once every 3.5 minutes of non-commercial airtime, the first hour of prime time is "assaulted" by violence, profanity and sexual content, said the Parents Television Council (PTC) in their study. During the 2006-2007 study period, almost 90 percent of the 208 television shows reviewed contained objectionable content. FOX, the most watched network among young adult viewers, was listed as the worst among broadcast networks overall with 20.78 instances of violent, profane and sexual content each hour, which is nearly double the amount of similar content shown on the five other major broadcast networks in the study. "Our study clearly demonstrates th...

Author: Eric Subject: U.S. Should be Worried by Chinese Computer HackersPosted: Fri Sep 07, 2007 5:15 pm (GMT -4) Pentagon Advisor: U.S. Should be Worried by Chinese Computer Hackers Chad Groening A Pentagon advisor and national defense analyst says Americans should definitely be concerned over the recent report that the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) has hacked into defense systems at the Pentagon. The report, published in the Financial Times on Labor Day, quoted unnamed sources that said the PLA hacking took place in June and forced officials to take down the network for more than a week. The Chinese denied the report, calling the allegations "groundless." But Lt. Col. Bob Maginnis (U.S. Army-Ret.) says this was not the only report to emerge recently about Chinese hacking. "There was one in Germany last month," claims Maginnis. "Der Spiegel, the magazine, reported on it. And they pointed their fingers clearly at the People's Liberation...

The project makes it easy for American Christians to send their extra Bibles and other Christian books overseas. One linguist and translator partner in Costa Rica requested some books for both himself and his pastor. With CRI's Spanish on-site inventory, the team was able to send the pastor some much-needed resources. The translator, Luis Diego, was grateful for a Hebrew-English New Testament and a book explaining the role of Creation in salvation and redemption. In his thank-you note, he wrote, "In a nutshell, if the whole story of creation and the fall as told in Genesis were not true, then the whole life/ministry/death/resurrection of Christ would be...

Author: Eric Subject: Christian Groups Respond to Hurricane FelixPosted: Fri Sep 07, 2007 5:08 pm (GMT -4) Christian Groups Respond to Hurricane Felix Michelle Vu Christian humanitarian groups are tending to the needs of Hurricane Felix victims after this season’s second Category 5 hurricane slammed into Central America earlier this week. International aid agency World Vision has mobilized teams in Honduras and Nicaragua in the affected areas to determine the greatest needs. “Houses are destroyed along the Mosquito Coast,” said Oscar Chicas, World Vision’s emergency response director for Honduras, in a report. “We are worried that one of our programs may still be affected by flooding.” On Tuesday, Hurricane Felix smashed thousands of homes in Nicaragua and raised fears of floods and mudslides in neighboring Honduras. The death toll for Hurricane Felix is over 40 but could grow as the search teams continue to comb through the rubbles, The Associated Press reported Thurs...

Author: Eric Subject: Hybrid Embryos Could be Created within MonthsPosted: Fri Sep 07, 2007 5:04 pm (GMT -4) Hybrid Embryos Could be Created within Months Hybrid embryos containing both human and animal material could be created in British laboratories within months. The controversial research was given a green light yesterday by the UK's fertility regulator. A shortage of human eggs led scientists to seek permission to make hybrid embryos from human skin cells and animal eggs such as those from cows, which are plentiful in slaughterhouses. Two teams of scientists are poised to start making cow-human hybrids for research into incurable diseases, with at least one project expected to start by the end of the year. Stem cell expert Dr Stephen Minger, who wants to use the embryos to study conditions such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and motor neurone disease, said the work could "revolutionise drug discovery". But the decision by the Human Fertilisati...

The lawyers from the Christian Legal Society and the Alliance Defense Fund are asking permission for the Association of Faith-Based Organizations to be added to a lawsuit over that issue. They say the result of the case against California Lutheran High School could affect the rights of members of the organization. Parents of the two expelled students are suing the Christian school, alleging a violation of California's "sexual orientation" anti-discrimination laws. Witmer Alleged Biblical Problem How can the Bible be correct (Luke 2:2) when claiming that the great census decreed by Rome's Caesar Augustus about the time of Jesus' birth circa 4-5 B.C. occurred "when Quirinius was governor" if Quirinius (or Cyrenius) didn't even become governor until the year 6 A.D.?! Isn't this a clear case of the Bible being in error on matters of history? Sensible Solution No so fast. Critics used this text for many years to make their case for a Bible that is unreliable. But no more. Today, there are a number of reasons for giving Luke the benefit of the doubt. Over and over (in references to 32 countries, 54 cities, and 9 islands) the doctor has proven himself to be a reliable historian, as demonstrated by famed scholar and archaeologist, Sir William Ramsey. To date, the only census docume...

James Kennedy, a Christian broadcaster and the pastor of a Florida megachurch who played a critical role in the rise of conservative Christianity, died yesterday at his home in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. He was 76. The cause was not immediately known, said Kristin Cole, a church spokeswoman, but Mr. Kennedy suffered permanent damage from heart arrhythmia last December and had been undergoing rehabilitative therapy since then. From the founding of Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church in Fort Lauderdale 48 years ago, Mr. Kennedy became an indefatigable and persuasive voice urging Christians to take on a broader culture that, in his view, had begun to decay. He argued that the decline was due to society’s increasing secularization and hostility to Christianity, said Frank Wright, a friend and the chief ...

Far fewer know of the American Center for Law and Justice, a leader in the flourishing field of Christian legal advocacy that may be less famous but is no less determined to see its views prevail in the nation's courts and, ultimately, its culture. The best-financed and highest profile of these conservative Christian legal groups, the ACLJ, headed by aggressive chief counsel Jay Sekulow, has led the way in transforming the complaints of the religious right from raucous protests on the courthouse steps to polished presentations inside the highest courts in the land. These cases cover a broad range o...

Take for example the common question, "May I borrow a pen?" The EvangePen starts with a "wow" and ends with a Gospel presentation. The pen has a spring-loaded hidden sheet printed with EvangeCube images that allows for "Simply Sharing Jesus." E3 Partners also offers conversation starters like the Evangecube keychain or wristbands. Wristbands are worn by thousands of young adults. They often carry messages that allow the wearer to share a cause they're supporting. E3 Resources developed the 4iana wristband with similar intentions. It's a storewide commitment. Customers come to buy gifts, shop for home-school supplies or find books on grieving and other spiritual issues. If they need to, owners Richard and Vanessa Yochim will take the time to pray with their customers. "I like the fact that we get to meet one-on-one with customers in a lot of ways," Richard Yochim said. These days, Christian retail encompasses much more than Bibles and books. With home-school curriculum, apparel, music, videos, gifts and greeting cards, Christian retailers are specialists in the expanding marketplace for Christian products. In spite of competition from "big box" booksellers and discount stores, many Christian retailers nat...

Author: NewsFeeder Subject: Contours of Grace Posted: Wed Sep 05, 2007 4:00 am (GMT -4) The parable of the prodigal son in Luke 15 is a familiar story for many. In fact, some of us are so familiar with it that we might even fail to see the rich contours of grace presented in its narrative. Familiarity with the story assumes its central figure to be a son who leads a wasteful and extravagant life. But a careful reading presents the multi-faceted contours of God's extravagant display of grace towards all wayward sons and daughters. Jesus presents this story as a crowd of tax-collectors, sinners, and religious leaders gathers around him. "A certain man had two sons," Jesus begins. The younger of the man's two sons insists on having his share of the inheritance, which the father grants though the request violated the Jewish custom that allotted upon the death of the father a third of the inheritance to the youngest son.(1) With wasteful extravagance, the so...

Author: NewsFeeder Subject: Theo logy of Choice Posted: Wed Sep 05, 2007 4:00 am (GMT -4) There are some stories that move us whether we hear them at five or 55. The 1965 release of the first Peanuts movie, A Charlie Brown Christmas, was instantly loved by adults and children alike. Interestingly, it almost did not make it past the television executives who hated it. The movie was criticized for everything from being too contemporary in music, to being too religious in tone. But audiences everywhere confidently disagreed. Having aired every year since its debut in 1965, it is now the longest-running cartoon special in history. One of my favorite scenes, which I no doubt share with many, finds Charlie Brown on a hunt for the perfect "great big, shiny, aluminum tree--maybe even a pink one" as instructed by Lucy for their Christmas pageant. At the tree lot, Charlie Brown walks through row after row of flashing, shiny spectacles of color, trying his best to choose wel...

Psychiatrists are less likely to be Protestant or Roman Catholic and more likely to be Jewish or have no religious affiliation compared to other types of doctors, according to the study released on Monday in the journal Psychiatric Services. The study found that 39 percent of all the doctors surveyed were Protestants, 22 percent were Catholics, and 13 percent were Jewish. Among psychiatrists, 27 percent were Protestants 10 percent were Catholics, and 29 percent, Jewish. Author: Eric Subject: Researcher: Poor Not Really Poor?Posted: Tue Sep 04, 2007 8:08 pm (GMT -4) Researcher: Poor Not Really Poor? Jim Brown A researcher at a leading conservative think tank says while America's "poor" are not affluent, they're not deprived in the sense political activists and the media would like people to believe. New findings released by the Census Bureau show the nation's poverty rate was 12.3 percent in 2006, down from 12.6 percent a year before. The median household income increased slightly to $48,200. However, a prominent researcher says most of America's "poor" live in conditions that would be judged as comfortable or well off just a few generations ago. Robert Rector, senior research fellow in domestic policy at the Heritage Foundation, says the Census Bureau does not count welfare benefits -- neither does it do a good job of counting any form of income. "When the average American hears the word poverty, they're ...

Recently a chaplain from the Army Chief of Chaplain's office appeared as the keynote speaker at a conference of the Islamic Society of North America. And in 2006, a deputy secretary of defense and the commandant of the U.S. Marine Corps opened an Islamic center at Quantico, Virginia, with great fanfare and praise. But Lt. Col. Participants will not only receive their Face of a Child gifts but also a celebration meal, along with Christian literature. The children are often in need of warm winter outerwear (coats/jackets) hats, gloves, and scarves). Often the orphanages don't have adequate heating. Many times the children will wear that coat not just when they're going outside but when they're in the classroom attending lessons. That makes their warm clothing needs more constant. LSM aimed the project with a winter clothes theme in 2003, but the children who benefited at that time from the project have outgrown their coats and passed them down to younger c...

In 2004, armed Chechen separatists stormed a school and held hostages in the gym for three days. The incident ended with 331 hostages killed, 186 of them children. Four of those children belonged to Pastor Taimuraz Totiev and two more to Totiev's brother Sergey, both pastors at Beslan Baptist Church. In Beslan, almost everyone is related, making the emotional toll even greater. Everyone was effected. An Open Doors co-worker said the Beslan people look "as if they've been crippled spiritually." Dave Stravers of Grand Rapids, Michigan-based Mission India explains: "What's happening now is they want to amend the law to make it stronger. The amendment that's being proposed is that any religious conversion will require pre-approval on the part of the government." According to Compass Direct, the governor of Chhattisgarh feels the amendments amount to excessive government control and a religious double standard in a state "anti-conversion" amendment bill. Not surprisingly, the legislation was proposed by the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The changes present more hoops for new believers to jump through. Stravers believes the laws were designed to slow the spread of Ch...

That much became obvious to me the moment I met my classmates and began looking over syllabi for classes on Greek, Hebrew, missions, and biblical theology. No congregational ministry can replicate the time seminary affords for intense focus on technical but important matters of theology. Professors toss around fascinating innovations and insights. Students, though often downtrodden by the gravity and complexity of their tasks, suddenly shine as they behold great truths about God. The average churchgoer will never have the time or inclination to focus on theology. Even in our most rigorous churches, the cares of this world interfere. Perhaps an encounter with a seminary graduate has convinced them that theology belongs to arrogant e...

Polk County Judge Robert Hanson ruled that Iowa’s 1998 Defense of Marriage Act, which allows marriage only between a man and a woman, must be nullified, severed and stricken from the books, and the marriage laws "must be read and applied in a gender neutral manner so as to permit same-sex couples to enter into a civil marriage ..." Critics said the group's actions forced their government into negotiations with the Islamic militants that damaged the country's international reputation. A day after the last hostages were let go, some of the church workers apologized for the trouble caused by their captivity, and a few collapsed when told the militants had slain two male colleagues. One said she secretly kept a diary on the lining of her pants. With the crisis over, South Koreans turned their focus to what went wrong, who is to blame and what lessons can be drawn ...

Author: NewsFeeder Subject: Truly Human Posted: Sun Sep 02, 2007 4:00 am (GMT -4) Truly Human Jill Carattini "What does it mean to be human?" has been the inquiring theme of more than a few journals, conferences, and special reports. It is a question that is considered from anthropological, theological, and biological perspectives, from within medical, ethical, and spiritual circles. Yet regardless of the examiner, any plumbing of the depths of the nature of humanity is a discovery that the implications are as far-reaching as the subject itself. Generation after generation, voices that have spoken to the question of human nature often reflect something of the paradoxical character of humanity. Plato described human life in terms of the dualistic qualities he observed. While the mind is representative of the intellectual soul, the stomach is an appetitive beast that must be tamed. Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn wrote of the human propensity for both compassion and cru...
