Inspiration & Devotionals :: Fully Rewarded

Author: NewsFeeder Subject: Fully Reward edPosted: Sun Sep 02, 2007 4:00 am (GMT -4) Fully Rewarded Jill Carattini "The most important thing to be said about awards,” an anonymous voice once uttered, "is that Mozart never got one." The statement draws into sharp distinction the often-troublesome quality about recognition: sometimes the most deserving candidates for praise are overlooked. (And the victim we notice most often is usually ourselves.) By the age of six, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was an accomplished performer and a promising composer. In his lifetime he was commissioned to compose an opera, made a member of an honorary knightly order by the Pope, and was given membership by the Accademia Filarmonica despite their policy requiring candidates to be 20 years old. But he was not rewarded with the pomp and circumstance we might imagine for someone of his rare giftedness. He was not given a lifetime achievement award or presented with anything compara...

Author: NewsFeeder Subject: Defining SecularizationPosted: Sun Sep 02, 2007 4:00 am (GMT -4) Defining Secularization Ravi Zacharias One of the symptoms of modern and postmodern change is the large stock of new words, or certainly the new use of old words--terms such as "user-friendly," "downsizing," "multiculturalism," "politically-correct," "homophobic," "postmodern," "poststructuralism," and "deconstruction." If the cartographers of our time are working away furiously to draw up new maps as empires get further subdivided each day, our neologists (those who invent new words) are living at a boom time for their preoccupations. One such word that we are all now accustomed to hearing repeatedly is "secular," or "secularization." I would venture to suggest that we might find ourselves stumbling when asked to define what this word really means. The word itself has a broad sweep, ...

Author: Eric Subject: Pentagon Officers Face Discipline for Endorsing ChristianityPosted: Mon Aug 27, 2007 6:18 am (GMT -4) Top Pentagon Officers Face Discipline for Endorsing Christianity Ethan Cole Seven high-ranking officers, including four generals, could face discipline for what the Pentagon considers their promotion of Christianity. The Pentagon inspector general found the seven officers to be engaged in misconduct when they appeared in a promotional fundraiser video for the evangelical group Christian Embassy three years ago, according to OneNews Now. Christian Embassy was founded by the late Dr. Bill Bright of Campus Crusade for Christ and ministers to diplomats, government leaders and military officers. The ministry holds prayer meetings each Wednesday morning at the Pentagon. The officers were said to be in uniform at the Pentagon when they expressed military approval and support of the evangelical ministry in the video, according to The Associated Press. T...

Author: NewsFeeder Subject: Worlds ApartPosted: Mon Aug 27, 2007 4:00 am (GMT -4) Worlds Apart Jill Carattini Anyone who has ever walked through the halls of the great philosophers, early church fathers, or ancient rhetoricians or ethicists has inevitably stumbled upon the person and work of St. Augustine. In his lifetime, Augustine served as a professor for over a decade, established a school of rhetoric, acted as bishop of Hippo, argued fluently in crucial theological debates, and authored over a hundred separate titles. He was the most quoted theologian throughout the Middle Ages, and is considered a great doctor of the early church. But his theology continued to make an impression on the broader Christian church and later Western thought as well. Augustine is easily considered one of the more influential contributors toward the Western mindset; he was also a favorite theologian among the protestant reformers of the 16th century. Augustine's voice was prominent in ...

Author: NewsFeeder Subject: To the Slaughter housePosted: Mon Aug 27, 2007 4:00 am (GMT -4) To the Slaughterhouse I'Ching Thomas A few years ago, while traveling across to Europe in a ferry, we found our bus parked next to a truck. It was one of those trucks where there are two levels of storage space for live animals. This time, it was loaded with sheep. There must have been at least a hundred sheep crammed into that vehicle, all on their way to the slaughterhouse. As I observed the animals, they were behaving rather amusingly--some were sticking out their noses sniffing away, while others were trying to peek out curiously as they experienced the new smells, sights, and sounds that were quite different from their usual farmstead. Little did they know they were on their way to be butchered! In another incident, it was reported a while ago that shepherds in Turkey watched in shock as hundreds of their sheep followed each other over a cliff. It started when one sheep w...

2007-08-27 10:00:00
Author: NewsFeeder Subject: Status ConfessionisPosted: Mon Aug 27, 2007 4:00 am (GMT -4) Status Confessionis Jill Carattini For the earliest believers, confession was a way remembering all they had witnessed. Before God they declared: "You saw the suffering of our forefathers in Egypt; you heard their cry at the Red Sea. You sent miraculous signs and wonders against Pharaoh.... You made a name for yourself, which remains to this day" (Nehemiah 9:9-10). Before one another they remembered: "We believe that Jesus died and rose again and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him" (1 Thessalonians 4:14). Whereas we might view the confessions of the church today as formal treatises or ancient documents, the intent was the same: We confess what we need to remember, what we long to remember. We confess the promises of God; we confess the actions of God. We confess, and our identity is forged. For what we choose to remem...

Author: NewsFeeder Subject: Grace -full Living Posted: Mon Aug 27, 2007 4:00 am (GMT -4) Grace-full Living Margaret Manning We talk a great deal about grace in the church. We talk about God's grace towards us--grace is God's unmerited favor. We also talk about grace in terms of not getting what we deserve--both in terms of God's wrath against us for our sin, and in terms of the abundance of God's blessing towards us. Each is an example of grace. We also talk about God's grace as it extends to others. Since we are recipients of God's grace, and we don't do anything to deserve that grace, we likewise should extend grace towards one another. Extending grace to one another can take many forms: a non-judgmental attitude, humility, generosity, forgiveness, and demonstrating love. It could be said that demonstrating grace in these many ways reflects a 'grace-filled' life, and 'grace-full' living. But how do we get there? So often we are quick to judge, full of pride ...

Author: NewsFeeder Subject: Weed or PlaguePosted: Mon Aug 27, 2007 4:00 am (GMT -4) Weed or Plague Jill Carattini In the 1930's, a vine native to Japan was introduced throughout the United States as a highly effective means for controlling erosion. Forty years later, the USDA officially declared this miracle-vine a weed. While visitors to the South are immediately taken by scenic glimpses of kudzu-blanketed landscapes, natives keep their doors shut to keep the creeping plant from taking over their houses. Growing better in the South than it does even in its native environment, kudzu can grow as much as a foot per day, climbing trees, barns, telephone poles--and anything else that gets in their way. And while these vines actually do help prevent erosion, they also destroy entire forests, wrapping themselves around every inch, smothering every tree from needed sunlight. The chronicles of southern kudzu meet up with a similar story in recent headlines. The article descr...

A three-year battle ended last August when the Food and Drug Administration decided that women and men 18 and older could buy the Barr Pharmaceuticals Inc product without a doctor's order if they showed proof of age at a pharmacy. "More women know about it, and it's just becoming much more part of their mainstream reproductive health care," Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards said. Plan B pills contain higher doses of progestin, a hormone used in prescription birth-control pills for 35 years. Two Plan B pills reduce odds of pregnancy by 89 percent...

The pews were gone, and the sanctuary had become the Heights Youth Club basketball court. Overseeing the gathering was not a preacher elevated above the congregation, but a former basketball player surrounded by kids eager to have a place to play on a warm summer day. What has not been lost in the transition is a sense of purpose and energy -- some even would say mission -- in this old brick building. "I can't think of a better way if the church could not make it there than to develop a program that would make young people's lives better," said the Rev....

The Rev. LWI's Dennis Anderson was recently in India. He says persecution against believers used to be worse in the north. "The south is catching up to the north in terms of persecution. And some of the governors, or chief ministers, are trying to push through anti-conversion laws or laws against evangelism. It's getting to be a delicate situation." While Living Water International is a Christian organization, that fact isn't stopping their work. It's amazing because, Anderson says, "Everything we do is in conjunction with the local church. An extensive survey by The Associated Press and MTV found that people aged 13 to 24 who describe themselves as very spiritual or religious tend to be happier than those who don't. When it comes to spirituality, American young people also are remarkably tolerant — nearly 7 in 10 say that while they follow their own religious or spiritual beliefs, others might be true as well. On the whole, the poll found religion is a vital part of the lives of many American young people, although with significant pockets that attach little or no importance to faith. Forty-four percent say religion and spirituality is at least very important to them, 21 percent responded it is somewhat important, 20 percent say it plays a small part in their lives ...

Results showed that 65 percent of America's young people are happy with their lives and 62 percent think greater happiness will come later. The relationship with their parents was mentioned by 73 percent of survey respondents when asked what one thing makes them most happy. What makes this a natural fit is that the project focuses on a group of nations in Africa who share a heritage with Brazil. Southwell notes that during the days of slave trade, there were more Africans taken as slaves to Brazil than to Central and North America together. This pastor developed "Multi-Cultural Ministries Maranatha" to train new missionaries, and the program will soon be ready to launch. Among evangelicals, however, the priority was much different, a new survey found. Among various groups – including conservatives and liberals and blacks and whites – the latest Barna survey found that the most radical differences of opinion on what needs to change in America were between evangelicals and those who are not born-again Christians. Overall, 82 percent of American adults said a change in the overall care and resources devoted to children is absolutely necessary in the immediate future. Evangelicals were 20 percentage points below in ranking that issue a top priority. While enhancin...

The federal lawsuit contends that the law, which takes effect Aug. 28, would infringe on abortion rights, and asks a judge for an injunction blocking it. If the law takes effect, Planned Parenthood of Kansas and Mid-Missouri claims it will be forced to halt abortions at its Columbia and Kansas City offices — either permanently or while costly and "medically unnecessary" renovations are made. That would leave the St. Louis area as the only place in Missouri with functioning abortion facilities, the lawsuit said, although Planned Parenthood also ope...

Computer models predict that the storm could arrive as a category five, after having a deadly swipe at Jamaica, Haiti and the Dominican Republic.
