UN: We have 10 years to save the planet
2007-12-02 12:10:00
The world has less than a decade to change course to avoid irreversible ecological catastrophe, the UN warned last week. The stark warning from the UN’s Human Development report came just ahead of next month’s climate summit in Bali, Indonesia, to negotiate a successor to the Kyoto protocol. In a repeat of previous warnings from scientific panels, the 400-page report said that simply ignoring climate change would lead to unprecedented reversal in human development in our lifetime, and acute risks for our children and their grandchildren. The report, commissioned by the UN Development Programme, said climate change would hit the least-developed countries the hardest. “The poorest countries and most vulnerable citizens will suffer the earliest and most damaging setbacks, even though they have contributed least to the problem,” the report says. “Looking to the future, no country - however wealthy or powerful - will be immune to the impact of global warming....

Climate changed linked to outbreaks of African fever - in Italy!
2007-12-02 12:03:00
Nearly 300 cases of mosquito-borne chikungunya fever have been reported in Italy - where only isolated cases of the virus had been seen in the past. Such large outbreaks previously were documented only in Africa and Asia. “We were quite surprised,” said Stefania Salmaso, director of Italy’s Center for Epidemiology at the National Health Institute. “Nobody ...

Scientists designing nuclear batteries that could fit on a pickup truck
2007-12-02 11:57:00
A portable nuclear reactor in development by Hyperion Power Generation could be buried in a small cement casing within the ground and provide maintenance-free power to 25,000 homes for 5-years. An internal chemical reaction produces 27 megawatts of thermal energy powering an external steam turbine to produce electricity. ?We prefer to call it a ?drive? or a ...

A new breakthrough could make solar energy cheaper than burning coal
2007-12-02 11:51:00
A San Jose company has successfully created a solar coating that is the most cost-efficient solar energy source ever. Their PowerSheet cells reduce the cost of production from $3 a watt to just 30 cents- making solar power cheaper than burning coal. These coatings are as thin as a layer of paint and can transfer sunlight to ...

New invention turns exhaust gases into biofuel
2007-12-02 11:41:00
The world’s richest corporations and finest minds spend billions trying to solve the problem of carbon emissions, but three fishing pals in North Wales believe they have cracked it. They have developed a box which they say can be fixed underneath a car in place of the exhaust to trap the greenhouse gases blamed for global ...

Burning sea water is a possible energy source
2007-12-02 11:36:00
An Erie cancer researcher has found a way to burn salt water, a novel invention that is being touted by one chemist as the “most remarkable” water science discovery in a century. John Kanzius happened upon the discovery accidentally when he tried to desalinate seawater with a radio-frequency generator he developed to treat cancer. He discovered ...

50% of trawled cod are thrown away due to EU policy
2007-12-02 11:25:00
Jonathan Shaw, the UK’s fisheries minister, said recently he would petition the EU for higher North Sea fishing quotas after describing the amount of dead fish being thrown back into the water as “immoral”. Trawlers targeting other marine life are forced to discard cod and other white fish because of quotas designed to protect stocks. According ...

Andes cities run out of water as glaciers sink
2007-11-30 10:29:00
El Alto and its sister city of La Paz, the world’s highest capital, depend on glaciers for at least a third of their water - more than any other urban sprawl. And those glaciers are rapidly melting because of global warming - scientists predict that all the glaciers in the tropical Andes will disappear by mid-century. The ...

The Pentagon plans to beam solar power from space
2007-11-30 10:23:00
A futuristic scheme to collect solar energy on satellites and beam it to Earth has gained a large supporter in the US military. A report released recently by the National Security Space Office recommends that the US government sponsor projects to demonstrate solar power generating satellites, and provide financial incentives for further private development of the ...

Solar island generates green power
2007-11-30 10:20:00
A Swiss-designed artificial island is set to make its first appearance in the Gulf, with the aim of providing a source of clean energy to produce electricity and hydrogen using solar power. Large-scale solar power facilities are rare as the cost of panels still makes it prohibitive to build vast array but, according to Thomas Hinderling, ...

Does turning the clocks back damage the environment?
2007-11-30 10:12:00
According to a study by Cambridge University engineers, turning the clocks back does cause a surge in the countries CO2 emissions. The study found that households use an extra 5% electricity due to the darker evenings. This generates millions of tonnes of excess carbon dioxide, and adds millions of pounds to the nations power bills. The ...

Microscopic pollution may trigger heart attacks and strokes
2007-11-30 10:08:00
It was a murder mystery playing out in major cities across the country and perplexing scientists. Thousands of people were dying from strokes and heart attacks within 24 hours of a spike in microscopic pollution - tiny particles that spew from the exhaust of diesel trucks, buses and coal-burning factories. But scientists didn’t have a smoking gun. ...

Time for (solar) tea
2007-11-30 10:02:00
We all know the Chinese (like the British) just love a cup of tea. But what do you do when firewood, gas and electricity are scarce? Simple, just beat a couple of panels of metal into shape and hang your kettle in the middle! Photo found here

Cyanobacteria might be the future of bio-fuel
2007-11-24 14:39:00
Researchers at The Biodesign Institute at Arizona State University are developing biofuel feedstock from cyanobacteria. These tiny little prokaryotes are sometimes referred to as blue-green algae, though they were around long before algae and are thought to be the original species to change our atmosphere from a reducing one to an oxidizing one, creating this oxygen-rich ...

UN: Evidence of climate change ?unequivocal?
2007-11-24 14:33:00
Climate change could have far-reaching and “irreversible” consequences if more action is not taken to cut greenhouse gas emissions, a UN scientific panel warned in a recent report. It said the trend could lead to “abrupt” changes to the planet, cause human suffering and threaten some species with extinction.”Slowing and reversing these threats is the defining challenge of our age,” UN Secretary-General Ban ...
