Asteroid to hit Mars: Chance increases
2007-12-29 09:36:00
The chance of a football field-sized asteroid plowing into Mars next month has been increased to 4 percent, NASA scientists said on Friday after analyzing some data."I think it'll be cool," said Don Yeomans, who heads the Near-Earth Object Program at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. "Usually when an asteroid is headed toward Earth, I'm not rooting for an impact."The space rock, known as the nondescript 2007 WD5, was discovered in late November by the NASA-funded Catalina Sky Survey in Arizona. Based on the latest information available, scientists said last week there was a 1-in-75 chance the asteroid could hit Mars on Jan. 30.The odds were increased to 1-in-25 this week after a Ph.D. student pored through the archives and plotted the asteroid's motions before its official discovery. The new information allowed scientists to improve their calculations of the asteroid's orbit and flight path.Still, the asteroid poses no threat to Earth and is closing in on the Red Planet at 27,9...

Hiccups of Chris Sands
2007-12-29 06:31:00
Chris Sands , 24, a Lincoln man suffered non-stop hiccups for the past 11 months. He has tried everything including holding his breath, drinking from the wrong side of a glass and getting a fright since the hiccups started last February. So far nothing has worked and the singer has been left unable to perform with his band; during the more intense bouts he struggles to sleep, eat or even breathe properly. He has had a brain scan, abdomen scan, chest scan and CT scan all in an effort to uncover the reason behind his mystery hiccupping, but so far there has been no diagnosis. In his most recent effort to get to the root of the problem, Chris tried an oxygen chamber, where he was placed in a large metal tank with an oxygen mask over his mouth, despite suffering from claustrophobia. After admitting defeat, doctors are now sending him to a psychologist because they believe his body has now simply just got used to hiccupping. Dust Pillars inTrifid Nebula
2007-12-26 11:36:00
Amazing space! In the above picture, you can see the end of a huge gas and dust pillar in the Trifid Nebula . According to NASA, Dust pillars are like interstellar mountains. They survive because they are more dense than their surroundings, but they are being slowly eroded away by a hostile environment. The pink dots are newly formed low-mass stars. A star near the small pillar's end is slowly being stripped of its accreting gas by radiation from a tremendously brighter star situated off the above picture to the upper right. The jet extends nearly a light-year and would not be visible without external illumination. As gas and dust evaporate from the pillars, the hidden stellar source of this jet will likely be uncovered, possibly over the next 20,000 years. NASA

Ozone hole twice the size of Europe!
2007-10-08 05:55:00
The Ozone hole over Antarctica is twice the size of Europe ! The Metop satellite has revealed the extent of ozone thinning in late September. This has been the first opportunity for Metop, Europe's most sophisticated weather and climate observer, to study the hole since its launch last year.Scientists at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) analysed data from the Global Ozone Monitoring Experiment 2 (GOME-2) instrument on the satellite. According to scientists, some unusual meteorological conditions this year drove extensive thinning over the South Atlantic and South America and a build-up of ozone over Australia.this year, the layer thinned down to 220 Dobson units, a measure of atmospheric ozone (where, the global average of the ozone layer is 300 Dobson units). However, the thinning this year has been well short of last year's record hole, which at times was bigger than North America. Link

Mobile Phones and Brain Cancer
2007-10-08 05:41:00
Regular use of a mobile phone for more than 10 years can raise the risk of cancer, a study claims. Swedish researchers found that long-term users had double the chance of getting a malignant tumour on the side of the brain where they held the handset.Professor Lennart Hardell of the University Hospital in Orebro and Professor Kjell Hansson Mild of Umea University, analysed the results of 11 studies carried out around the world, before coming into this conclusion. An hour a day on a mobile phone is enough to increase the risk. They said children should be discouraged from using mobiles because their thinner skulls and developing nervous systems made them especially vulnerable. Adults should exercise caution. This research was published in the latest issue of the 'Occupational Environmental Medicine' journal. via DailyMail

Greener Paints, Cosmetics and Holograms
2007-10-07 10:02:00
A plant-like micro-organism mostly found in oceans could help in manufacturing of cheaper and 'greener' paints, cosmetics and even holograms. The tiny single-celled 'diatom', which first evolved hundreds of millions of years ago, has a hard silica shell which is iridescent. The shell displays vivid colours that change depending on the angle at which it is observed. This effect is caused by a complex network of tiny holes in the shell which interfere with light waves.UK scientists have now found an extremely effective way of growing diatoms in controlled laboratory conditions, with potential for scale-up to industrial level. This would enable diatom shells to be mass-produced, harvested and mixed into paints, cosmetics and clothing to create stunning colour-changing effects, or embedded into polymers to produce difficult-to-forge holograms. Europa Rising over Jupiter
2007-10-07 07:24:00
When passing Jupiter on your way to Pluto, what should you look for? NASA pondered just this question recently, and the response from one space enthusiast was to capture the above breathtaking moonrise. The unusual vista was then actually captured by the New Horizons spacecraft in February just after it buzzed past Jupiter on its way to Pluto and the outer Solar System.Visible above is the cracked surface of Europa 's expansive ice fields, visible just behind a jumble of Jupiter's swirling clouds. Europa is one of the largest moons of Jupiter and a possible host to sub-surface liquid oceans that are real candidates for containing extra-terrestrial life. During the Jupiter flyby, New Horizons also carried out scientific observations of Jupiter's cloud tops and comparative images of Io's volcanoes and its continually changing surface. via NASA
