We hear so much about Poverty and Child Poverty in countries like Africa but, sometimes we need to be reminded of the large amount of Poverty stricken families right here in the United States. The US is one of the richest countries in the world, one would think Poverty would not even exist. Yet, it does and it is growing everyday. One in six children lives in poverty in America . Save the Children works in impoverished rural communities in Appalachia, the Southeast, the Mississippi River Delta, the Gulf Coast, the Southwest and California?s Central Valley ? where conditions resemble parts of the developing world. Queen Rania Al-Abdullah of Jordan was recognized by Seed s of Peace , Monday, for her commitment to promoting world peace. As Her Majesty Queen Rania Al-Abdullah accepted the award she asserted that, "It is time to drop the rhetoric of fear, and launch a conversation of the heart ? one that builds on common values, as fellow citizens of an ever-shrinking world".The Queen also voiced her concern about the divide between East and West. "I believe the terrain at stake is much wider than the Middle East," she said, "For I am concerned about the dark cloud of fear that is separating East from West and obscuring our ability to work through our problems together."Queen Rania, who has been speaking out about the need to increase dialogue and understanding, especially between the East and West, outlined the role that every individual has in this regard. HIV/AIDS Treatment Now Less Than $1 A Day
2007-05-09 14:55:00
Former President Bill Clinton announced yesterday new agreements that significantly lower the price of AIDS treatment for second-line anti-retroviral drugs (ARVs), drugs required in patients who develop resistance to first-line treatment and which currently cost 10 times the price of first-line therapy. These agreements lower the prices for 16 formulations of ARVs that will generate an average savings of 25 percent in low-income countries and 50 percent in middle-income countries. Reduced prices will be available to 66 developing countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean through the Clinton Foundation?s Procurement Consortium.Wow .. Rewrite the Future
2007-05-08 15:32:00
Over 100 million children are growing up today without an education.More than 43 million of these children are living in countries affected by armed conflict, where little is being done to help.Millions more living in conflict-affected countries are receiving a substandard education.I believe Education = Power ... without a basic education these children are at the mercy of whatever life throws at them, which in many cases is becoming child soldiers, or being a part of the corruption itself. Education is something we who live in rich countries take for granted, we need to make sure not just our children have an education but that children we will never meet, have the same rights and same opportunities.Rewrite the Future is a Save The Children Campaign - it challenges the world to ensure millions of children have the opportunity to get an education, many children are out-of-school because of war conflicts and can't get access to quality education.Show Your SupportLearn About Rewri...

Lack of Blogging
2007-03-25 17:24:00
I apologize for the lack of posting lately, I am not sure exactly when I will be able to start blogging consistently again, I feel a great sense of need and desire to continue to propel compassion and awareness. I am considering many things at this time and looking at all of my options. Humanity, now more than anytime in history has an opportunity to heal itself, we can change the world, make it better than it has ever been, but it takes a great deal of dedication and desire to look past our own lives and into the lives of those who will come after us.I truly believe most of us want a better world, but actually doing the work to make it better is often times very difficult and most people have a hard enough time trying to deal with things in their own.Empathy will not be updated until further notice, but please feel free to use the various links and information sources on my blog. May you all be happy and find the joy you so richly deserve. :)- MattContact Me

UNICEF Funding
2007-03-19 13:40:00
Over the past 60 years, UNICEF has helped achieve incredible successes in saving children's lives and protecting their futures.Unfortunately, many poor children still face enormous threats. Nearly 11 million children die each year before their fifth birthday—20 children per second—and most of those deaths are from preventable causes. An estimated 100 million young children do not attend primary school, with 117 girls out of school for every 100 boys. The global number of children orphaned by AIDS increased from 11.5 million to 15 million in just two years.U.S. Government supportThe U.S. Government's support for UNICEF is part of America's global investment in children. The annual contribution to UNICEF's regular budget is critical to UNICEF's work in child survival and development. In addition, the U.S. contribution positions UNICEF to help the United States in international emergencies and humanitarian crises (such as the tsunami crisis), conflicts (such as in Sudan and Af...

Pursuit of Happiness

Pursuit of Happiness Isn’t a Straight PathOrigionally Posted by: laurakujawski on Tuesday, March 13, 2007Topic Expert OpinionHappily ever after isn't a given. Achievable, yes, says a Michigan State University psychologist. But after analyzing years of data tracking people through their lives of joys and sorrows, scientists conclude that major changes in life circumstances -- like marriage, divorce, or debilitating illness -- can indeed have long-term impact on happiness levels. In the April issue of Current Directions in Psychological Science, Richard Lucas, associate professor of psychology, reviews some recent studies that fly in the face of the popular belief that general happiness levels were a constant and impervious to long-term change. In fact, some downturns do stay down for some people, said Lucas, who is also affiliated with the German Institute for Economic Research."Even though happiness is heritable and relatively stable, it can change," Lucas said. "Happiness levels d...

Celebrate - Woman
2007-03-09 14:34:00
I was away yesterday. and unfortunately did not get a chance to post. Yesterday was International Woman 's Day, as most of you know March 8th. I don't think such a day should ever be taken lightly.Being a guy, I can hardly relate to the issues that face women around the world, but I do know that women have a lot to be proud of. Men have fought to free a country, to be able have freedom from oppresson, but women have struggled and continue to struggle just to have a voice, and not so long ago, they could not even vote.I think these Days of Remembrance are needed, so we all can reflect on what we have now, and what and who it took to give us what we have. Nothing worth while is ever easy, and nothing is achieved without a passion and desire to make change a reality. So in remembrance of the many women that have come forward and said enough, demanding equality and the right to be who they are... I salute you.To Learn More about this Day and it's History, please visit the link belo...

The same day an 11-year-old Iraqi boy underwent heart surgery on Long Island last week, the widow of an Army captain who had befriended the youngster was opening a package at her home in California. It was Capt. Brian Freeman's personal effects, sent to Charlotte Freeman after his death in Iraq Jan. 20. They included a hand-held Sony PlayStation video game that he had played with during breaks. On Tuesday, Charlotte Freeman fought back tears as she presented the gadget to the smiling, gum-chewing boy named Ali as a token of what she hoped would be a lifelong friendship."I want to thank `Brian's Army' for completing this promise he made to Ali," Charlotte Freeman said at a news conference at Schneider Children's Hospital."When Brian's personal effects came in, (the toy) just was there and it hit me that was something I should bring,"she said. "I think it's a lot more personal. It was something that Brian actually had."An interpreter said Ali's "biggest thanks are to God, Captai...

During a special address at the Jeddah Economic Forum, on Sunday, Queen Rania of Jordan - urged the global community to plant the seeds of acceptance, dialogue and peace for future generations."The obligation to plant well for posterity is a common thread linking humanity," said Queen Rania. "Citizens of both East and West must be willing to sit down with and listen to the other – and each of us must be accountable for what that dialogue reveals," - Queen RaniaIn its eighth year, the forum, widely recognized as the premier business gathering of the Middle East, was attended by a host of high-profile regional and global personalities - Queen Rania’s message comes at a time when worldwide polls are released outlining the perception of a growing rift between East and West."At a time when technology has shrunk the world into a village," she said, "we find ourselves distrustful and divided. Swimming Lessons

I recently discovered this charity, and like most people, probably never thought of swimming lessons as a charity...yet it is!.When many people think of aid to Africa, they imagine sacks of grain for the starving or blankets for the homeless. But in Uganda, one charity is offering something different: swimming lessons."After AIDS and malaria, drowning is the biggest cause of death in our local communities here on the lake" says Patrick Tumwijukye, the manager of "The Land and People Project" - a charity that is coordinating swimming lessons on Lake Bunyonyi, in the country's far west.Marine police do not keep records on how many victims have been claimed by the 67-square-mile Lake Bunyonyi, Africa's second-deepest lake."Even me, I am just now learning to swim," Simon Peter Okoshi, the marine police chief, told The Associated Press. "Swim ming is not in the culture here, many people are hydrophobic."To learn More about this great Charity:The Land and People ProjectTags: Swimming, Sw...

Amazing Grace

The Amazing Change CampaignThere is an estimated 27 million slaves in the world today. Modern day slavery can come in many different forms. Entire families may work long days in rice-mills, brick kilns or on plantations. Children may be abducted and forced to fight in a rebel's army. All of the people in these examples are slaves—they cannot come and go as they please and are often beaten or threatened with violence. They have no autonomy in their day-to-day lives and deserve the right to be free.- This is the opening statement for a Campain, called The Amazing Change. With the release of the movie Amazing Grace -Bristol Bay is launching an integrated social justice campaign called The Amazing Change aimed at:* Increasing literacy about the historical issue of slavery and the abolitionist movement;* Raising awareness about modern day slavery and other forms of oppression;* Motivating people to get involved to abolish slavery;* Raising a new generation of youth who care about suff...

I am sure those of you who follow Celebrity Junk will hear or have heard of Britney 's newest "stunt" she shaved her head bald. This is one of many stunts that she has done lately, as well as her partying and drinking lifestyle with Paris Hilton.Could it possibly be any more clear, that her friends and family need to help get her away from the life she lives?I suppose what this post is really about, is the fact that the entertainment business has turned into something which is no longer about entertainment or enjoying a good song, it has turned into an arena that feed the part of the human existence that most of us don't like to admit is there. In Britney's case... she has been in the entertaining business since she was very young, and her own mother has acted as her manager.I'm not one who necessarily follows these stories, but after reading this, this morning, I know for sure she is headed towards some sort of breakdown or worse. Just makes me sick when the media and fans fee...

Black Enough?

If you follow the political races then you know about Barack Obama running. Now here is a guy, who - while not perfect - has an exceptional political mind, has done many great things in the political structure, and who is now running for President. And yet...ever since he took the microphone and entered the spotlight, surprisingly the most popular question that keeps arising is... Is he Black Enough ?Racism is something that really gets under my skin, mostly because it is so obviously stupid. Here is a guy who, if elected will literally be the leader of the United States, have the ability to launch a war and blow half the world into ash, or help save the world, - fix the countries ills.. and what is the question? Is he Black Enough? Are we ready for a Black President?Don't you think it's about time, we grew up, and acted like "thinking" adults? Why is it that, when people such as Tiger Woods or Barack Obama, do something great.. it always goes back to someone questioning the ...

Happiness is not a tended roseAmid the prescient beauty of a garden:Perhaps one senses soon some gate may close;Perhaps one senses soon the earth will harden.Years come and go like waves upon a shore,Violent or peaceful with the wind. After one has given up on more,Love waits within the heart, its passion thinned.Even in a passage void of light,Nether windings black with rage and grief,There are waters sweet with lost delightIn which one finds a strong, serene belief. No happiness can overcome life's painExcept one love, and love give life again.Happy Vale nti ne 's DayTags: Valentine's Day, Love, Life, Holiday, Poem, Inspiration,
