2008-05-13 15:15:00
Peter White, who has plied his trade at his own firm, as well as at Citi Private Bank and U.S. Trust, has created a list of 10 things parents should provide for their children. When it comes to understanding wealthy families, Peter White is among the wisest. He’s spent more than 20 years counseling wealthy parents and privileged children about how to better understand the adverse effects of wealth and to search for more meaningful lives. He calls this list "The 10 Elements of Care."THE 10 ELEMENTS OF CARE by Peter White 1. Necessaries — food, clothing, shelter, medical attention, basic education. 2. Affection — This involves "the great big person who takes care of me opening him or herself to me, making him or herself vulnerable and human in a way, connecting with me physically and in spirit, and thus affirms my significance as a person." 3. Affirmation and Support — This is basically about expressing sincere belief in the child: "You want to be a cheerleader – or a doct...

Violence and Education in Iraq
2008-04-22 15:43:00
Families in Basra and Baghdad’s Sadr City have been plunged into one of the most violent episodes in Iraq ’s recent history. As Iraq’s security forces continue to fight against militia groups, widespread clashes and curfews kept families trapped indoors and led to shortages of water, food and medical supplies. While life is slowly returning to normal in Basra, fighting is ongoing in Sadr City. Life for children there has become harder and more frightening.Addressing shortages of water and medical supplies in Sadr City are immediate humanitarian priorities. Education is also under threat. Most of the city’s primary and secondary schools are closed. More than 20 schools have been reported damaged in the violence, with unconfirmed numbers of students and teachers killed. UNICEF is calling for schools to be protected as a priority.According to reports from people on the ground, some empty schools are hosting families who have been displaced. Still others may be in use by milit...

As 6 million children attended the first day of school this week, including 800,000 children who are now enrolled for the first time in their lives. Afghanistan continues to be a beacon of hope in the field of education. Communities in war-torn Afghanistan have been working to overcome violence and other obstacles which can hinder children from attending school. Despite the often difficult environment, student enrollment in the country continues to rise. "I salute the courage of the communities who are standing up to violence," said UNICEF Representative in Afghanistan Catherine Mbengue, during an opening day ceremony at the Hawa School in the northern town of Puli Khumri. "Communities recognize the value of learning and that is underlined by the millions of children who are returning to school or will start school for the first time today." At the Hawa school, Ms. Mbengue was joined by Counsellor and Head of Office for the Swedish Embassy in Afghanistan Ann Marie Fallenius. The ce...

As she held up the bright pages illustrating the colorful characters, children greeted them with wide eyed anticipation. The story tells of a young girl’s conversation with a little sheep as she searches for the most beautiful thing in the world. 2008-03-20 14:50:00
Lucy Liu, a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador - is calling on Americans to pay $1 for tap water in restaurants to help save children's lives in Africa.Lucy, just returned from Cote d'Ivoire in Africa, where she witnessed the threat to child survival caused by a lack of clean drinking water. She is encouraging people to pay for the tap water they'd normally get for free during World Water Week - this week to help raise $1 million to provide African children with purified water. Lucy says, "If you go to a restaurant and they'd give you tap water for free, they're asking you to donate a dollar for the tap water. One dollar will provide water for 40 children for one day, which is incredible. It's kind of great - you get to go out and enjoy food with people and you get to give back in such a small and simple way." Social Justice Philanthropy
2008-03-17 15:11:00
Anne Glickman, 34, inherited several million dollars in stock on her 18th birthday. She preferred not to think or talk about the money into her 20s because, she said, as a political activist, her wealth was a bit inconvenient. "I felt like I was in hiding," she said. "Here I was, an activist thinking about class and race, but I wasn't really factoring in my own personal wealth," she said. "I decided to give away a large number. It was scary, but I just had to do it." So far, Glickman said, she has given away $1.2 million. She is part of a movement of relatively young American heirs who practice what they call social justice philanthropy, which emphasizes giving to small, local groups.Karen Pittelman, 32, a singer in a punk band, said she inherited $3.5 million seven years ago and gave away all but $15,000. Jamie Schweser, 35, author of the novel "Tales of a Punk Rock Nothing," said he inherited $1 million eight years ago and gave away three quarters of it. So what motivates p...

Painter for Peace
2008-03-11 17:00:00
Solomon Muyundo, a Kenyan artist, paints a slogan in a damaged house in Kibera slum, Nairobi, Kenya.Peace graffiti has taken over Nairobi's battered Kibera slum. 'Don't Kill Innocent Kenyans' and 'Keep Peace' beg slogans hand-painted on the charred walls of shacks and storefronts destroyed by looting mobs, messages from Muyundo trying to heal a neighborhood with his paintbrush. Solomon Muyundo's mission is more complicated than one peace-loving artist against the mobs. He's also trying to atone for his role in the violence a reconciliation many Kenyans will have to attempt as they work to move on from the devastating knowledge that they are capable of killing each other. "I was trying to urge the public, especially those who are a bit wise, when they see such a message ... to think twice," said Solomon. Solomon's slogans are re-branding an area torn apart by gangs after a December presidential vote that opposition leader Raila Odinga accuses President Mwai Kibaki of steali...

Grassroots Philanthropy
2008-03-06 16:01:00
I would like to bring your attention to a thought-provoking book I just finished reading, Grassroots Philanthropy : Field Notes of a Maverick Grantmaker which was written by Bill Somerville the President of Philanthropic Ventures Foundation, with Fred Setterberg.I have to say, this was probably one of the most inspiring books I have ever read on the subject of Philanthropy. Bill Somerville, is an extremely compassionate individual who cares deeply for the world of giving.Bill has worked in the non-profit world for over 48 years, and in his book he shares some of his vast experience with us. I found his personal stories fascinating and his ideas for improving the world of Philanthropy inspiring! In one section of the book Bill talks about the Love of Humanity and breaks down the word Philanthropy into it's literal definition. Philanthropy - philos, Love; anthropy, Mankind. He suggests that Funders take time to go out into the community, to seek out potential change agents, and get ...

In partnership with the Kimberly-Clark Corporation, the Web Site, Family PLUS, contains helpful activities, advice and resources for families to develop the youth of today into the leaders of tomorrow. Melinda Gates , co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, spent a few days visiting Save the Children's newborn and child health programs in Mali . The visit helped draw attention to the challenges and opportunities of addressing the under-5 child mortality rate in Mali, a country where more than one child in five does not live to celebrate his or her fifth birthday. Save the Children works with the government of Mali, UNICEF, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), and other local partners to tackle the high rate of child deaths in Mali through a variety of strategies. It's about time President Bush
2008-02-19 17:15:00
President Bush calls on all nations to step up efforts to end "once and for all" the ethnic slaughter in Sudan. Well, I would say it is about time Bush! Bush said the U.S. is using sanctions, pressure and money to help resolve the Darfur crisis that President Bush calls a genocide. The President is frustrated at the lack of willingness of some other countries to do the same, sought to give his campaign for their increased involvement added weight by making pointed remarks on it from the Rwandan capital."The Rwanda people know the horrors of genocide," Bush said after meeting with Rwandan President Paul Kagame. "My message to other nations is: `Join with the president and help us get this problem solved once and for all.' And we will help."Rwanda was the first to deploy peacekeepers to the violent Darfur region in a joint African Union-U.N. mission. The United States has trained nearly 7,000 Rwandan troops and spent more than $17 million to equip and airlift them into the region. T...

Gaza Campaign
2008-02-11 17:10:00
Queen Rania of Jordan, lent a helping hand to volunteers at the Jordanian Hashemite Charity Commission as they loaded twenty two humanitarian relief trucks with nonperishable goods and medical supplies. The trucks, which carried humanitarian aid such as medicine, milk, food and blankets, were dispersed to Gaza and the West Bank, to alleviate some of the suffering incurred in the territories since the siege last month. Rania, an outspoken humanitarian advocate, has continued to highlight the crisis and asked for the people of Jordan to do all they can."People there are being deprived of so many of the necessities that we take for granted… and I fear that this situation can get worse. We need to mobilize, and coordinate our efforts to collect aid to send to Gaza," she said. The Jordan River Foundation , which Rania chairs, launched a relief campaign to collect humanitarian assistance. For a child, having a small toy to play with is usually a welcomed break from homework and chores, but for thousands of underprivileged children this Ramadan, the gifts they will soon be receiving as part of the Toys of Hope initiative will be bringing immeasurable happiness and hope.Hearing about the initiative, on Play 99.6 FM, a local Jordanian radio station, Queen Rania called into the station's morning show an voiced her support for the project."All of our small efforts combined can make a huge difference," said the Queen during her first radio-call, "The idea isn’t just how much you can give, it’s how much of yourself you can give."Inspired by the simplicity of Toys of Hope, the Queen said, "The initiative teaches us that you don't have to be super rich or famous or influential to make a difference. Queen Rania Paints
2007-10-09 14:42:00
Queen Rani a of Jordan, made a surprise visit to a local primary school and when she found the buildings in a state of severe disrepair she didn't just indulge in a lot of hand-wringing.She got on the phone to raise funds for the renovation and returned two weeks later to oversee construction work and lend a hand in getting things underway. She really does this kind of thing folks, it is amazing, not many Royals would spend this kind of time helping local schools. On Monday she made good on her promise to the children of Khawla Bint Tha’laba college. Paint-brush in hand and with her sleeves rolled up, she ended up helping parents, teachers and students in decorating classrooms. Which is why you should always carry spare clothes.. in case you get stuck painting walls lol"I hope the way you have all come together can serve as an example for others in Jordan," she told them after inspecting new window fixtures and electrical installations. The school is one of four the queen has "adop...

Grand Slam for Children
2007-10-08 16:18:00
Andre Agassi's Grand Slam for Children netted $9 million for the 580 students that attend the school his charity is helping to build. Agassi's annual benefit, in its 12th year, is Las Vegas' showiest display of philanthropy, and it's the one with the speediest results. His favorite-son status as a Las Vegas native and direct connections to the casino industry marshaled construction of an entire K-through-12 school in just six years. Agassi described the event as not just a concert "but a movement" and announced that the event had raised a combined $8.1 million. The total was bumped up another million by a last-minute donation from Tuscany Suites and Casino owner Charles Heers. The benefit featured surprise performances by the Goo Goo Dolls and Daryl Hall and John Oates, as well as billed headliners Seinfeld, Kelly Clarkson, Carlos Santana and Matchbox Twenty. Tony Bennett kicked off the show with "They All Laughed" and "Fly Me to the Moon," which he introduced as Aga...

Ana's Story
2007-10-02 16:28:00
While posting this I found myself conflicted, up till now the very name of Bush would upset me and make me want to start creating voodoo dolls ( not that I know how )... after reading this story about one of his daughters, perhaps I should slack off a little on the last name thing. Jenna Bush, who interned with UNICEF in Latin America from September 2006 through May 2007, has drawn from that experience to write ‘Ana’s Story : A Journey of Hope’ – a personal account of a girl who struggles to break free from a vicious cycle of abuse, poverty and illness. "I hope the book will inspire you to make a difference for children like Ana," said Ms. Bush, 26, daughter of US President George W. Bush and First Lady Laura Bush. A portion of the proceeds from sales of ‘Ana's Story’, published by Harper Teen, will benefit UNICEF. At a book launch held tonight at UNICEF headquarters in New York, Ms. Bush was joined by her mother, her twin sister Barbara, photographer Mia Baxter, who t...
