Healthcare IS that expensive!
2007-11-13 16:42:00
Here's an unusual gift for the holidays:from the WSJby Kris MaherMonday, November 12, 2007Wondering what to give your aunt this Christmas? How about paying for her next trip to the chiropractor?Pittsburgh health insurer Highmark Inc. is selling a Heal thcare Visa Gift Card from $25 to $5,000 to cover prescription co-payments, elective surgery, contact lenses and gym membership. The cards can be used only at providers or merchants that Visa categorizes as health related, including physician's offices, pharmacies and health clubs. The cards aren't available at grocery or retail stores -- they can only be purchased online or by calling a toll-free number.Highmark believes that the card fills a need for many people who want to help others -- from college students to baby boomers -- with various expensive health-related needs, but feel uncomfortable about offering cash."There's something about a gift card," said Kim Bellard, vice president of e-marketing and customer relations at th...
With This Ring: A Wedding Sketch
2007-11-12 19:33:00
"Get Me to the Church"The bride is almost ready, in an anxious, happy rush...her calf-length dress and red satin shoes are caught in the twirl of excitement...she's just got to get the other shoe on...and then she's off! With This Ring: A Wedding Sketch SeriesIn an age where the media insists on telling brides to be it's okay to take out a second mortgage to finance a wedding, I was pleasantly surprised and refreshed by a wedding I attended recently. It was simple and quite chic. I wouldn't call my sketches an exact account of the wedding, but the upcoming series is inspired by the truly sane and smart event. I will show some of the sketches in their original (raw hand drawn) form. I am giving all of the pieces a fashion sketch quality as the "final" product.

A Design Aspect: Weddings
2007-11-12 16:10:00
Before I blog on this past Saturday's Stroll (which is....you guessed it...a wedding!) I just wanted to begin by saying that I am officially going to begin ranting (with solutions of course!) on weddings. I know that it's a very important day, one of the most important days in a bride and groom's life, but some of these events are getting out of control because some couples can't afford them yet go ahead with spending 80, 90, 100 grand on them!I think that it would be very interesting to plan an affair with a very heavy emphasis on design with the goal of keeping costs to something reasonable: reasonable = the new couple has money left over to actually start their lives together! I'm not a wedding planner, but I am posting another periodic perpetual list of items with great design and reasonable cost. Look out for my wedding sketches (a very mini series) inspired by a beautiful beach wedding I recently attended! The first items on the list are a fabulous simple-chic necklace a...

I received this email a few days ago, and I couldn't believe it since scams like this are all over the news! See the email below:Dear Customers, We are glad to inform you, that our bank is switching to new transactions security standards. The new updated technologies will ensure the security of your payments through our bank. Both software and hardware will be updated.update your account info at the following link.https://wellsfargo.com/Here is where the link actually goes:http://www.vozllanera.com.do/mambots /editors/system/update/wellsfargo/onlineb anking/updateyouraccount/updatewells/upda te/default.htmInsane. By the way, no bank is going to send you a "dear customer" email, and if they change or update their systems, they already have your info! Etc, etc. When you need to update anything, make sure you're actually at the bank's site - type in the address instead of clicking on links!...Another manic Monday. Haha.

Balance. Beauty. Brains. How Stylish.
2007-11-08 18:46:00
his was an awesome answer to a question I posed to Linda, the Author of "God's Woman Now"...I asked her to define a "ultra chic" (maybe even almost perfect) woman in general terms without getting too much into the lines of religion - an interesting challenge for a woman with a ministry!"A Woman who surpasses all....In a "now" society of today. It is very demanding and we balance multiple roles and tasks . It can be very demanding , but salutations to you women everywhere, for we are created to be catalyst creatures, whether it is giving birth by womb, teaching, instruction or wisdom..We are all designed to PUSH..As we look closer into our roles, there are tips of expertise available for all. If you are Grandma, stay-at-home mom, corporate lady on demand, hairdresser, blue collar..etc or maybe just have not located your natural born worth of who you are. There is one thing we all have in common..We are noble characters, if not here is a checklist to adhere to..For a parent ,single o...

Yes, I sketch.
2007-11-07 18:51:00
"Can you draw?"Yes, I sketch.I get this question from people pretty often - it's a valid one, since you don't necessarily have to be able to draw in order to be a "graphic designer." I do work with media that clients come to me with (photos, illustrations, stock images, etc) and I also sketch by hand and with the computer. "Mixed media" is a good way to put it. It's all fabulous. The illustrations on my blog (unless otherwise noted) started out as simple sketches, and through the magic of drawing programs (haha) vector shapes are placed over the basic sketch. Vectors look good no matter how large or small you make them, so I work with them almost exclusively. Some illustrations can take quite some time to complete (i.e., the blog background an header), and others are a "quick" abstract concept. (The one featured here was less than 10 minutes from sketch to finish, most of the time went to me obsessing over the colors.) I rough sketched this concept by hand (my silk crepe jum...

OOH GADGET.
2007-11-06 23:09:00
I know you're thinking 'why is she posting a stupid ebook reader?" But this one is interesting! It can handle 8,000 page turns in a single charge , an SD slot, RSS reading, and MP3 playback for listening to music while reading. It's $350 which is kinda pricey but it'll become more reasonable at some point - like all the other tech stuff!

What are those ISBN's for?
2007-11-06 04:12:00
his is part of my mini research series...I was looking to understand the process that an Author has to go through - as a designer for a growing client base, I am starting to have a deeper interest in what they go through to get into print! The HistoryDuring the nineteeth century there developed in the U.K. and the U.S. pioneering efforts to systemize and cumulate the catalogs of publishers' output, to the benefit of booksellers, wholesalers and librarians. The current manifestations of this development are to be found in "Whitaker's Books in Print" in the U.K., R. R. Bowker's "Books in Print" in the U.S. and Bowker's "Global Books in Print on Disc" which combines the world's top six English-language book databases on a monthly CD-ROM disc--an international bibliography which not only profiles all titles currently in print in the English-language market, but also links each of them with their publisher. The work that led to these great current bibliographies of English-language pu...
Question of the Week!
2007-11-01 15:28:00
Got this question from a MySpace friend...here's my answer, what do you think?----------------- Original Message -----------------Date: Oct 31, 2007 12:40 PM HI ! HOW ARE YOU ?? I READ YOUR BLOG ABOUT LOGO'S !!!THAT WAS INTERESTING......IM SEARCHING FOR "GRANTS"FOR A WHILE OVER THE INTERNET.....THE ONLY THAT COMES UP IS ALL OF THESE BOOKS THAT THESE COMPANIES WANT U TO PAY FOR........ DO U HAVE ANY ADVICE ???? YOUR KNOWLEDGE IS GREATLY APPRECIATED ........Thanks for the comments (well, I hope you found it educational! haha)...anyway, when I first started I was looking for grants as well, but I didn't have much success...the thing is that the government doesn't really give grants to regular citizens even if we've got great ideas because...well, I don't know but what I do know is that there is usually a catch. They won't give $$ to start an art business, but they may give $$ to start art education in a specific low income neighborhood. So this could work to your advantag...

Typography: a Purely Trivial Fact...
2007-10-12 04:32:00
When you want to see what a font looks like, the preview usually says: "the quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog"...well I never know why )or cared) but it was originally used to test typewriters, because it contains every letter of the alphabet. This sentence is called pangram. Pangram (Greek: pan gramma, "every letter") or holoalphabetic sentence is a piece of text which uses every letter of the alphabet. Most pangrams are short, usually a single sentence. Today, pangrams are frequently used to display typefaces. A quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog: this pangram is far from perfect. It contains three e's, four o's two r's, two t's, and two u's. Other pangrams are: Pack my box with five dozen liquor jugs. Just keep examining every low bid quoted for zinc etchings. Quick jigs for waltz vex bad nymph.Astronaut Quincy B. Zack defies gravity with six jet fuel pumps. The five boxing wizards jum...

2007-10-11 17:20:00
ecause Duck is the new Turk ey , at least according to my family...haha. So, of course they make a decision like that for thanksgiving no less, and who has to plan the menus? The one who didn't make up the crazy idea (me)! Okay, so I found this recepie for roasted duck that I will try out on an unsuspecting friend before making the trek in November: (image from BBC Good Food) from Gourmet Mag Active time: 45 min Start to finish: 2 1/2 hr Servings: Makes 2 servings. What I want Right Now: An Everlasting Pedicure!
2007-10-08 18:33:00
s I watch my polish start to chip away, I think back on the perfection that was my pedicure 3 weeks earlier...and then I try to recount exactly how many coats of clear polish it took to extend it even this long! When I came across this article from across the pond, I started dreaming of the day when I could find this Everlasting bliss in the States...Trick or treat? - Calgel 'Everlasting' Pedicure What is it? A pedicure with a difference - the difference being that the polish applied at the end of the treatment has a gel overlay, which means the colour will last for months. How does it feel? Very relaxing. First, my feet were bathed, exfoliated and moisturised. Hard skin was buffed away and my toenails filed and prepped for the application of the long-lasting polish. There are plenty of shades to choose from, or you can opt for the French style with white tips. Three coats of gel were applied after the colour. In between each, my foot was put under a UVA lamp which set the gel...

Under Construction: Site Infrastructure.
2007-10-08 18:09:00
o, while I'm building my site, I am also making sure I have the proper tools in place to help promote and direct traffic to it once it's launched. While I have a great base of clients right now, nothing could be worse than relying on yesterday to promote me tomorrow...all that matters is today as they say! So anyway, I came across a few ways I should NOT promote my site...basically mistakes that could be made by anyone! I found the article to be very interesting: (read the entire article here)Once you've built your masterpiece, you have to spread the word. Submitting your Web site to search engines, directories and related sites is critical to success. The real Web-savvy companies have whole teams of geeks who spend their days figuring out how to get better rankings in search engines.Unfortunately, there's a lot of fools' gold, bad advice and even downright scams in the Web site promotion field. If you go about promoting your site the wrong way, you can actually hurt traffic...

The Latest Project...With an Issue!
2007-10-02 17:52:00
his is the latest project that developed some unforeseen issues...it's a fabulous site for Simply Divine Confectionary Creations. I did the design, coded it, etc and uploaded it...all the while I was looking in Firefox to check the progression and continuity of my work...COMPLETELY forgot about Internet Explorer and the CSS issues it has (has to do with how the page looks....if you don't get it now, you will if you look at the site in Explorer!) It's all jumbled up! INTERNET EXPLORER SUCKS!!!!!! GET FIREFOX!!! Mozilla Firefox!!!!!Please everyone, download Firefox!!!! In the meantime I am looking for a solution to this, otherwise I will have to tell the Simply Divine Baker that her site is best viewed in Firefox...inconvenient to say the least...Well anyway, when this is over I'll be creating a business card to match the theme of the site...it's all about the branding!

BLOG AGAINST ABUSE: Skill Abuse: Spec-Work, Sabotage, and Vultures.
2007-09-27 15:49:00
In honor of Blog Catalog's invitation to Bloggers Against Abuse , I decided to blog about a subject that is of great importance to me and others who are a part of the graphic design industry. The internet is the best thing that ever happened to many skilled professionals' careers. It allows for a broader market in which to provide services. It allows for lower overhead costs. It's truly amazing. However, with all good things come the bad, this is the balance of life. For instance, Craigslist is a great way to look for or provide goods and services, employment opportunities, activities. But plenty of "lowlifes" populate the site as well, looking for completely free professional services or looking to pay as little as possible for them. The graphic design industry suffers the most from this, and both "Vultures" and some designers are to blame. Some designers are willing to provide hours and hours of work for as little as $50. Some aren't really designers (whether or not you...
