Manic Monday: Enhance Your Calm With Random Numbers?
2007-07-30 16:34:00
ome days of flight training are better than others, especially since I am working on my commercial maneuvers (which can be tricky!). Although I have an instructor who is very knowledgeable and professional, his correction can sometimes be...irritating to say the least! But since it's not his fault that I didn't stay within certain limitations for instance, I don't want to react/yell some obscenity at him...Well, a friend told me to try counting immediately in random numbers or even prime numbers, until I was over it. What? Why? But since I had nothing to lose (besides my temper haha), I gave it a try and it worked!Basically you are only doing this for a few seconds at the maximum, but since you have to think of the next random number or the next prime number, the anger/irritation goes away...Have you heard of anything like this before? By the time I realized this was silly, I wasn't upset anymore...also it took all of 3 seconds, plenty of time to respond to my instructor's...

(While You're Steaming Mad)The Other Side of Delays and Cancellations
2007-07-30 06:11:00
n a summer season already filled with record delays and cancellations, the nation's fifth-largest carrier (Northwest Airlines) cited pilot absenteeism for the problems."It's kind of sad for us who are caught in the middle," said airline passenger Jordan Tompkins, "because we have no control over that, and their decisions are affecting a lot of people."The pilots have said they were not playing hooky. They said their contract with Northwest limits their flying time to 90 hours per month and during this year's busy travel season their time sheets are maxed-out."I think the employer has to come to the party and recognize the hard work and stuff that the pilots doing," said airline passenger Kathy Favazza. This weekend's cancellations happened despite efforts by Northwest earlier this month to thin out its schedule so pilots would have enough hours. The union said the airline simply needs more pilots. The airline's troubles come as just another passenger headache this year: The Feder...

Red Lobster is the Walmart of Dining Out
2007-07-30 05:40:00
hh, lazy Sundays...Okay, so since a friend of mine wanted to be one of the last to see Evan Almighty (that's still in theaters? haha), I reluctantly agreed, and we decided to "dine" at a Red Lobster beforehand. Of course it was packed since it's Sunday and you get the combination of the usual random people and then those who just left church...like a Walmart on Sunday it was crowded and chaotic. At least the food was decent enough after they tried to fill us up on salad and those cheese biscuits...I had grilled rainbow trout and mashed potatoes...apparently the key to all of the recipes in there is white wine - it's in everything from the lemon butter sauce on my dinner to even the biscuits...here is a basic recipe for those cheesy biscuits, I was shocked (Recipezaar.com)!You'd probably be better off making these and pulling the grill out for your seafood than waiting an hour (in a cold and dark establishment) after sitting down...you can skip people staring at each other chew...

Some Things Cannot be Justified...
2007-07-29 19:49:00
t's one thing to decide that you are going to splurge on a pair of $555 jeans. Many people have decided to splurge on something at least once in their lives. However, it is silly almost to the point of deceit to give an explanation as to why a pair of jeans is worth this amount of money! One of the statements was that each zipper tooth is polished by hand...HAHAHAHAHA!!! The handiwork and "airdrying" and "four-hour" washes and "antique" treatments...whatever they are trying to say - is nonsense! No matter how you say it, it's a pair of JEANS! Some one may see them and have to have them (some splurge more than others), but some things cannot be justified...

Saturday's Stroll
2007-07-29 04:02:00
love clutches, and they were the only theme of this week's Saturday Stroll. I must admit they are always at least one of the goals every time I browse! This week I went searching in little shops/boutiques to see what I could find (not a fan of the local mall)...I think I did pretty well in the "strangely glamorous" department! I am really into details, and this leather crocodile styled clutch has a very obvious one - look at the way it opens - I just fell in love with that!It needed a little fixing up - I got rid of the hideous chain that it came with. I also had to use a little silver cleaner to remove the worn out golden overlay! That took all of 15 minutes to do, and was well worth it!

Maybe On My Wishlist...
2007-07-27 20:23:00
he Sigerson Morrison ballet skimmer in green metallic caught my eye...somewhere, I don't remember exactly, but I found it on zappos.com. I first fell in love with this brand a few years ago when I bought the shoe that made them famous - a pair of very comfortable red rain proof pointy-toe flats. I still have them to this day, and I feel this justifies the $75 I paid for them (they are just rubber after all)! But what about these green flats? Their $400 price tag is the reason why they are on my maybe wishlist, and not even my wishlist...no matter how much one makes, she still has to take a moment and think about whether or not this is reasonable...but if the shoes catch me on one of "those days"...I just may get into trouble...

he local area where I receive my flight training boasts little more than movie theaters and restaurants. So where do you think everyone is going on Friday night? I don't feel like traveling an hour to the nearest metro area this weekend, so I am willing to deal with the crowds at the movie theater. I am not, however, doing the 90 minute wait at a restaurant...so I am putting something together for friends before we go...Thai Cucumber Saladingredients1/4 cup fresh lime juice1 1/2 tablespoons fish sauce (nam pla)*1 1/2 tablespoons sugar1 1/2 tablespoons minced seeded jalapeņo chili (about 1 large)2 garlic cloves, minced1 1/2 English hothouse cucumbers, halved, seeded, thinly sliced3/4 cup sliced red onion3 tablespoons chopped fresh mint3 tablespoons coarsely chopped lightly salted roasted peanutspreparationWhisk first 5 ingredients in medium bowl. Do You blog?
2007-07-27 17:23:00
dd your blog to the Directory of Blog Directories on www.blogskinny.com (it's one of the chicklets on the right of this page). Why add your blog? They are looking to expand and categorize every blog out there (you'll have to ask them why haha, but I love it!) Adding your blog means more people will come across it, and read it! Some people don't want their blogs read but I do! You can get your own tracker (Blogskinny gives instructions on how to do this) to see your rank - I think it starts at 999 or something like that. (Anyone else who has this service let me know if I'm wrong...)The higher up you are (the smaller the number) the more likely people will come across your blog and love it...By the way it's free! That should make the choice easier...visit Directory of Blog Directories
Weekend Chic Ring in Green (The Introduction!)
2007-07-26 23:41:00
he "Weekend Chic" (in green) ring was inspired by the idea of having a fun and strange ring with a bit of sophistication to wear on Friday "after 6" through Sunday! Clubbing or dinner out, movies or shopping...maybe turn a few heads, start a conversation over it. I made a base metal/alloy version, as well as 2 sterling silver versions (one is thinner than the other). All are accented with rich green glass beads. Part of the "Treat Me" Collection.

ike many women, I do love haute couture! Of course, I don't have an extra 10-100K set aside for one of the pieces, but it's always a welcome sight! I had to put this up since I saw a PBS special on the secret world of haute couture...it was insanely interesting! By the way, I call my wearable art "couture" because it is handmade (with lots of attention to construction and detail). However, I can't call it "haute couture" technically because it is not made in Paris! (Nor is it "approved" by some Paris commission or board or something, haha)...The fashion world can be hilariously stuffy, can't it?Couture: High fashion. The highest levels of design.Haute Couture: Hi-fashion Garments (of Which Only A Single Price Is Produced) It?s Extravagant, It?s Irrational, It?s Unique And It?s Totally Unaffordable. Please keep this in mind: Always protect yourself! This news was a forward from a MySpace friend - please pass it on!A woman at the nightclub, 'Crow Bar'- on Saturday night was taken by 5 men, who according to hospital and police reports, gang raped her before dumping her.Unable to remember the events of the evening, tests later confirmed therepeat rapes along with traces of Rohypnol in her blood, with Progesterex, which is essentially a small sterilization pill. The drug is now being used by rapists at parties to rape and sterilize their victims. Progesterex is available to vets to sterilize large animals.Rumor has it that Progesterex is being used together with Rohypnol, the date rape drug. As with Rohypnol, all they have to do is drop it into the girls drink. The girl can't remember a thing the next morning, of all that had taken place the night before.Progesterex, which dissolves in drinks just as easily, is such that the victim doesn't conceive from the rape and the rapist n...

ome, the "Eternal City", is the capital of Italy and of the Lazio (Latium) region. It's the famed city of the Seven Hills, La Dolce Vita, Vatican City and Three Coins in the Fountain. The structure remains of the old Roman Empire (the Colosseum, the Forum, Palatine Hill...) are what draws me to this place - I am pretty sure that the History Channel and my television can't begin to do them justice! It is said to be a walk-friendly place, sights are everywhere waiting to be discovered. The Trastevere neighbourhood for some great cafes and trattorie, and a glimpse at a hip Roman neighbourhood.Partying in Rome is a pretty easy thing to do. Given a heart for exploration, Testaccio is the place to wander. Head down there around 11pm and listen for music. The outsides of the clubs will give you NO idea what the insides are like. There are usually loads of people simply walking through the street or looking for parking. Be brave, walk in, meet some wonderful Romans! (FYI "uh oh": Buying a ...

Textile and Print Art: (some of) My Latest Creations
2007-07-23 23:37:00
ooking at my jewelery creations will tell you that I take many of my cues from elements in nature, adding an abstract spin to them! My textile and print designs share similar cues. The Strange Flower design (on black) is going into print for a scrub uniform manufacturing company...I am so excited, can't wait to get some of the fabric! The "Apple Blossom" print was originally designed for a textile, but I ended up taking the main element and using it as part of my MySpace background. The design below is called "Abstract Noveau" and was created as part of an interior design theme to be a main wall hanging.

Whether or Not You're "Religious"...

his organization is absolutely amazing! Joyce Meyer Ministries' domestic and international charity efforts are some of the largest and most visible. Orphanages in India and Latvia. Women's shelters. Community centers. Recent figures compiled by the ministry report that it donates more than $650,000 a month ? nearly $8 million a year ? to charitable groups. They include a radio ministry in Warren, Mich., and outreach programs in Africa, England, Brazil and Ecuador. She's not just about handing people a plate of rice and sending them on their way - she helps build/rebuild their lives through self-sufficiency. For example, the "help the tsunami victims" trend is over, people have lost their pins and bracelets, and the mass media has moved on...her organization is still over there helping with the basic infrastructure of the region.Of course, jaded entities have unpleasant things to say about her! This woman started a faith-based ministry, which is her main focus. But her outre...

More Than a few Crusts of Bread and a Cup of Water!

fforts by celebrities like Bono, projects like (RED), and documentaries are bringing much needed attention to the many corruption, medical, and economic issues that plague Africa. However, I came across a documentary that addressed one solution that isn't brought up very often: creating jobs and business opportunities in this region! From reconnectafrica.comSet in Sierra Leone, the 30-minute documentary "Enterprise in Sierra Leone" follows the arrival of a SEEDA team and examines how the SEEDA Resource People built relationships with entrepreneurs, delivered business training and navigated the social and political challenges of their mission. The SEEDA programme grew out of a consultation process established by AFFORD in mid-2005 with African Diaspora organizations and individuals in the UK. Following feasibility studies to identify needs and to engage partners on the ground, 15 UK Diaspora Resource People visited Sierra Leone and worked with partner associations delivering training...

MahiMahi is for Manic Mondays
2007-07-23 05:07:00
t's Sunday evening so of course I'm thinking about how crazy Monday is going to be! Crazy as in good, but crazy nonetheless! What I usually end up doing: leave the airport, stop at the local Smokey Bones and order a mahi mahi sandwich with Remoulade sauce. But I am looking to break the unnecessary takeout habits (in anticipation of my new "down payment on a house" fund, funded by me haha), and a recipe in Gourmet Magazine is going to help me do just that...I Googled remoulade sauce and found it of course:Mahi Mahi with Charred Onion, Tomato, and Tapenade Vinegretteingredients1 medium red onion, cut lengthwise into 1/2-inch-thick wedges3/4 pound cherry tomatoes6 tablespoons olive oil, divided4 (6-ounces) skinless mahimahi fillets (1 inch thick)1 tablespoon red-wine vinegar2 teaspoons black or green tapenade (olive paste)Accompaniment: plain or parmesan couscouspreparationPreheat broiler and line a large shallow baking pan with foil.Toss onion and tomatoes with 3 tablespoons oil,...

fter the Advent ure in Coach, Sky Sister defintely did a 180 and stayed in the Marriott brand Residence Inn outside of New York...I will keep this short and sweet, since the pics are telling you most of what you need to know! The staff was friendly and helpful, staying on the phone while I looked for Route 3 (haha), the suite is a 2 bedroom and feels like an upscale apartment (nowhere near the "hotel room" vibe)...very modern furniture and tastefully decorated, especially for the size of the space. Breakfast is included in the price of the stay (around $200 a night, depending on the season)...a fab deal considering what a hole in the wall you can end up with in Midtown (NYC) for the same price!I absolutely fell in love with the setup of the suite...thinking about styling my own bedroom after the floor to ceiling headboard! This is very likely to happen so stay tuned for that post down the line...As I sat in the dining area for breakfast I was relieved that I was wearing a sweater, ...

t all ends with her connecting flight to New York sitting on the runway in Atlanta for 2 hours...the Northeast has some of the worst traffic! But the original flight was another matter...I always say that I will never fly Delta again! The flight attendants are nice, and the pilots get us where we need to go, but the antiquated seats are incredibly uncomfortable, the airline has lost my luggage numerous times (I only brought a carry on this time!), and when it's time for them to re-book your flight (because of their error) they will try to send you anywhere at any time without regard to your schedule or actual destination (they once offered to send me to an airport 60 miles from my home AND no guarantee of ground transportation...I offered that I would take the available first class seat or continue to politely annoy them...see the article on airline passenger rights)! After all that talk, what was I doing on a Delta flight? The thing is, they sucker you in with their sky miles an...

here's something about a place with a new outlook, and new energy that makes you want to experience it! This is definitely the case in Prague - there's an emerging creative class who have modernized the entire region with booming tourism and nightlife. I doubt this would be a typical vacation - but that's probably another thing that has me intrigued.Attractions include its bevy of castles, spectacular St Vitus Cathedral, Charles Bridge with its artists and street sellers, historic Wenceslas Square, the vast Old Town Square and the quaint Golden Lane. Apparetly, travel on the cheap is realistic - extensive underground and tram network or walking is facilitated ? half the fun is discovering new sights. Prague?s appeal lies in its unique ability to attract and charm people of all ages and interests. Most hotels have reduced prices and special offers in January to March and July and August. - info from Austria Travel, Photography: Sean Duggan

Welcome to Sky Sister Couture!
2007-07-16 19:09:00
ky Sister Couture is all about "kooky-sophisticated." Kooky-sophisticated? I, like my clients, am a girly-girl! I love fun, elegant jewelery but after being commissioned by a friend to make a piece for her, I realized that I was not interested in making "celebrity-inspired" pieces (though they too are welcomed to wear my creations, hahahaha)... I wanted to make things that at first glance would delightfully confuse an onlooker, creating curiousity. I didn't want anything too straightforward, predictable, or even too neat! My pieces have a distinct element of "random", but the craftsmanship and materials (Client's choice of base/metal alloy and sterling silver according to budget!) give them just enough sophistication!Pieces shown above: 1.tree and blue sky ring, 2.wispy bronzed ring, 3.weekend chic in blue ring
