Imagine No More Footfall Impact Noise From Your Neigbors Living Above You
2007-09-19 19:00:00
Beta Gel, a silicone based gel with almost unbelievable absorption qualities, as seen in this video from Japan Probe. If you could get this type of performance in a floor underlayment, it would greatly reduce footfall / impact noise. In fact Geltec does make an underlayment called NP Gel, but does not offer any information on it's IIC ratings. Hopefully, someone can import this to the States and do some testing. In this video an egg is dropped from about 70 feet onto a pad of Beta Gel, the egg does not break. The host then throws the egg at the Beta Gel pad and it still does not break. Watch how the egg does not bounce. You can see how this product might make a great floor underlayment.Tags: impact noise, footfall noise, beta gel, np gel, geltec

Soundproofing a fence
2007-09-06 06:25:00
Soundproofing a fence, well that would be impossible because, you would have to make a really tall fence to block all the noise. There must be some way, because millions of dollars are spent to build those sound walls along our byways of transportation. So a soundproof fence is out of the question, however you can build yourself a sound control fence. You can wrangle that noise to a tolerable level. The fence will have to be tall, at least 8 feet taller than the offending noise. To get the full scoop, visit Dr. Bob's Blog Soundproofing America BlogTags: soundproofing, fence, sound control, soundproofing a fence, soundproof fence

Soundproof Windows
2007-09-04 22:41:00
A soundproof window is a second laminated window (two sheets of glass with clear plastic membrane sandwiched between) installed behind your existing window with a dead airspace between. The second window should mimic your existing windows. So, if your seeking fresh air you will have to open two sets of windows to get to that fresh air. This type of setup is very effective and shutting the noise out. You can expect 80% or more reduction in noise. When purchasing these types of windows, it is best to take a look at more than one manufacturer. You may prefer one design over another. Also, consider that there is only a slight difference in sound reduction with the different thicknesses of glass 1//4", 1/2", and 3/4". They will try to push the thicker sizes because they are more expensive. Some, may argue over this point, but it is really the dead air space between the windows that helps reduce the sound, and 3" inches is supposed to be the ideal distance between windows. The price for a ...

Soundproofing An Exterior Door: Part 1 UPDATED
2007-08-21 02:50:00
DIY Sounproof Door PreviewSinging neighbors, mobile phone talkers, and kids playing outside my door. My front door was in need of some soundproofing, because I live in a HOA, I am not allowed to install a new door. I have been searching the Web for instructions on a DIY soundproof door. The instructions, I have come across are just impractical and ugly.Having not found anything to my liking, I decided to design it myself. While the finished project is not completely soundproof, it has reduced the noise to tolerable level. During this project, I also turned a ordinary door into something that is unique and stylish. In fact if you do not need the soundproofing, you can just go straight to installing the tin on your door. The first step is to purchase some M-D Rolled Packaged Door and Window Weatherstripping and a door sweep or door threshold that seals. After installation you will want to make sure your door is airtigt. Turn off the lights and have someone stand on the outside an...

Question: Can I use egg cartons or pulp drink carriers for soundproofing?
2007-08-11 21:12:00
The answer is no. There would be little to no benefit to using these materials for soundproofing. They are also a fire hazard. The reason people use egg cartons is for echo reduction in a room, not soundproofing. You can search this blog for the soundproofing application you are looking for.

Soundproofing An Exterior Door: Part 3
2007-06-15 00:57:00
At this point in the project, the door is unattractive. To improve the appearance of the door, I purchased nine 24X24 tin tiles from The American Tin Ceiling Co. These tiles are meant for the ceiling and will require some modification. It requires trimming some of the tin pieces with tin snips, they were then secured with Liquid Nails Construction Adhesive. You should wear gloves, otherwise you will cut yourself. I started at the top and centered the first uncut 24X24 tile on the top of the door. The part of the tile that is usually used to secure the tile to the ceiling should be bent on the edge at the top of the door. You can the secure the tile with small nails. On either side of the full 24X24 tile, I trimmed and secured the cut ceiling tiles. I trimmed each piece so that they would protrude slightly over the edge of the door. This way you can bend the edges to create a smooth edge. As I worked my way down the door, I used small nails to help secure tiles, while the glue was d...

Soundproofing An Exterior Door: Part 2
2007-06-06 23:44:00
Sealing the door weatherstripping was a big improvement and resulted in a reduction of noise from the stairwell area.I had some QuietCoat left over from another project. Though it was not meant for wood, I did coat the entire interior surface of the door. There seemed to be a slight reduction in sound.I bought some acoustic foam to fill in the thin area of the door panels. This resulted in no noticeable improvement.I then purchased some MLV/Mass Loaded Vinyl which had one side with adhesive. The MLV will help block the sound. I layed the MLV out on the floor and trimmed it to the size of the door I then attached it to the interior of the door, covering the whole surface. I used some small nails to further secure the sheet of MLV to the door. Also, the MLV is rather heavy, so you may want a friend to help. This further reduced the noise from the outside stairwell.Door covered with MLVSome things to consider. Make sure that your door hinges can handle the extra weight of the MLV. Ok,...
