Sonex Studio foam at Soundproofing AmericaThere is a lot more to a modern home or professional studio then simply soundproofing the walls and floating the floor. Oh of course these things are important especially when you are trying to capture that perfect classical guitar solo on tape or CD, but it is the acoustical tuning of the studio that really makes the difference between a good recording and an outstanding one. What do I mean by acoustical tuning? Basically it is deadening or livening a room to make it the perfect environment for live musical recording and voice-overs. If a room or a studio is too live this meant that there are too many hard surfaces fro the sound to reflect off of. It is what causes unwanted reverbs (echo) in the room dues to the lack of absorbent material on the walls ceiling and floors.Read MoreKeep 'sense design' in check in a busy householdStories on "designing for the senses" don't understand modern living. They rehash the same theme: Rooms should evo...

Soundproofing and Chickens
2008-01-31 18:19:00
On a recent trip to Hawaii, I had to ask myself, is this really paradise? The island of Kauai suffers from a chicken problem, there everywhere. The chickens are the result of Hurricane Iniki that broke open lots of chicken coops on the island in 1992. These chickens are confused and start crowing way before the sun every rises. We were staying in a condo with no glass windows, all we had were shutters. This lack of any soundproofing made my first nights sleep difficult. So the next day I picked up some earplugs and slept peacefully for the rest of the vacation. So I found it amusing when I came across this amusing article about a neighborhood chicken who was disturbing the neighbors."CHARLIE the cockerel went from being in the soup to flavour of the month this week as he was given a free soundproof chicken shed.He also received the backing of several neighbours who branded a campaign to silence him “petty”.The rowdy rooster’s owner, Ozzie Williamson, had been ordered by Ettrick...

Press Release: San Francisco Bay Area Maker of Soundproof Windows Moves to
2008-01-23 21:30:00
Reno, NV (PRWEB) January 22, 2008 -- The much anticipated move to Reno, Nevada, has finally happened for the previously California-based company, Soundproof Windows . After many years in the San Francisco Bay Area, the decision to relocate was made more attractive due to lower costs and the business-friendly climate in Nevada. Since the majority of the business is nationwide and not just in California, this move made even more sense."We have increased our warehouse space by 50%, purchased a fleet of Dodge Sprinters, hired more people, and see this as a huge opportunity to increase our production capacity yet again," said Soundproof Windows' president, Randy Brown. "We are excited to be in this thriving Nevada community and have already offered soundproofing solutions to one of the retirement homes along the main highway in Carson," Brown added. All of the management personnel from the old Fremont facility relocated; locally, Soundproof Windows also hired Don Handlin to be their Plant...

Soundproofing & Sex
2008-01-17 19:26:00
Here is a poor woman from the UK that that can not sleep at night. Her neighbors have sex 7 days a week and all night long. She writes in to the Daily Record asking for their help. They suggest either talking to the neighbor or ear plugs.Since soundproofing would be the last resort because of the expense involved, I would suggest that she try a white noise machine or a loud fan. I myself use air filter which creates a steady flow of white noise. It does mask most noise, giving me a peaceful nights sleep. Another option are earplugs, it may take a few nights getting used to them, but they will work. I find the Hearos earplugs the most comfortable. If your interested in more information about earplugs, check out this article The Sound of Silence: Sussing Out the Ear-Plug Market.

5 Tips to Being a Good Neighbor in Your Condo or Apartment
2008-01-11 17:41:00
These tips may seem obvious, but the world is full of clueless people. So, I have a rental above me and really did not have any serious issues with footfall/impact noise till the new tenants moved in. They walk so hard sometimes the vibration travels across the ceiling down the walls and to the floor. The ceiling also acts like a drum sending a shockwave of air through the condo.1. Do not walk like you are marching in the Rose Parade. Relax, walk softly and loose the shoes. See this guide on How to Walk Softly2. Do not slam your doors when inside or when leaving your condo or apartment. It only takes a few more seconds to close the door quietly and your neighbors will appreciate it. If you do not care about your neighbors, then you should care about your well being, you may just end up dead. Police: Man Angry About Slamming Door Killed Neighbor. 3. Do not slam your kitchen cabinets. The cabinets are attached to the wall, so when you slam it, it sends that noise and vibration every...

In this video from Expert Village, Greg explains that you can soundproof your windows by putting up another window behind your existing one. There is some controversy over the spacing between windows, but I have read that 3 inches is what you want to shoot for. Click here for more on "Installing a Double Window in a Recording Studio"

Soundproofing Your Man Cave with Green Glue
2008-01-04 07:37:00
Urban Dictionary's definition of Man Cave is: "A room, space, corner or area of a dwelling that is specifically reserved for a male person to be in a solitary condition, away from the rest of the household in order to work, play, involve himself in certain hobbies, activities without interuption. This area is usually decorated by the male that uses it without interferance from any female influence."It could be a bar, game room, theater, lounge and it is only limited by your imagination. TheLedger.com has an article about these Man Caves. Note that this article is very sparse on soundproofing information, it simply mentions that Green Glue is sometimes used in soundpoofing these Caves. I like to point out that people are using Green Glue for soundproofing and getting results.I had a Man Cave once, sigh! Here is a link to the article Retreats for the Males in Your Household.

Hard Surface Flooring Restrictions
2007-12-30 20:09:00
From the Orlando Sentinel, a reader writes with a question regarding hard surface flooring restrictions in the Miami area. However, this question and answers applies to everybody living in multi-family units. Richard White answers this question, "There is no good answer, except do not allow any hard flooring to be installed in upper-floor units." He goes onto say that one should contact a flooring professional. The problem is that a hard wood surface floor that is properly installed is still going to transmit noise to the neighbors below, it is very difficult for your neighbor to soundproof against this. The will result in problems including the "devaluation" of the unit below. So Richard White's recommendation is not to allow hard surface flooring to be installed in upper units. You can read the original article at OrlandoSentinel.com

Soundproofing Condos, Good For The Environment?
2007-11-30 20:16:00
In the article "New Approaches to Quiet Buildings Can Help Address Climate Change" by Kevin Surace, he writes that less resources are used by individuals living in the city. City dwellers are usually closer to their jobs and tend use more public transportation. Also, there is an advantage to people living in condos. Condos require less resources to build and use less resources to heat and cool. To get people into these condos, the most common complaint will have to be addressed, noise from your neighbors and the street. Kevin points out some of the new technologies for soundproofing. You can read the article at Multi-Housing News.Kevin Surace is the CEO of Serious Materials. Here is some more information about the company from their Press Release. You will also find it interesting that Quiet Solutions is a Serious Materials Company."Serious Materials develops and manufactures sustainable green building materials that considerably reduce the impact of the 'built environment' on the...

Review of Squeeeeek No More (Squeak No More)
2007-10-15 20:49:00
Part of soundproofing a ceiling may involve repairing the squeaks in the floor above you. So, I bought the Squeeeeek No More kit. From the manufacturer, "Stops floor squeaks from the top of the floor by safely going through the carpet!" So here is the situation, my neighbors condo above me has some spots where the floors are squeaky. They are moving out, so they were nice enough to let me come in and fix the squeaks. So, I ordered the Squeeeeek No More kit. It came with 50 screws, joist locater (long screw with threads at the end), alignment and depth control fixture, and a special driver bit.So, I first started in the neighbors bedroom, where I have been cursed by this squeaky floor. I love waking up to a loud squeak at 3 AM. There was a wide swath of floor that squeaked when you walked across it. So, I started with the loudest squeak. The directions say that the first joist is usually 9 to 10 inches away from the wall. Mine was about 6.5 inches. From the first joist the directions s...

Soundproofing an Existing Wall: Part 1
2007-10-09 20:01:00
This project covers the existing options you have for soundproofing an existing wall. This is geared towards those that want to soundproof a party wall. So, if have you very limited funds, you will want to make sure you seal all the holes in the electrical and switch boxes on the wall you wish to soundproof. Use caulk such as GE Silicon II or an acoustical caulk to seal the holes. This will require turning off the electricity and removing the plates. Seal all the holes and edges with lots of caulk. Any holes will allow the sound to come through. Now seal it up with a outlet gasket.Next up remove the base board and seal the space between the drywall and the floor with caulk. Ok, still have money to spend? Next up we will add additional soundproofing by adding another layer of drywall with Green Glue in between. To be continuedTags: soundproofing existing wall, soundproofing party wall, quietrock, green glue, supress drywall
