34 Well-designed Kitchens
2011-10-21 22:57:00
Here are more than just a few (more than 30, to be exact) kitchen designs – very different in style and size, but all are gorgeous and well-designed. All of them are deservedly the heart of these homes. Probably your kitchen is far from many of the ones here (mine is, for sure!), but you can get plenty of inspiration from these photos. I’ve grouped them into 4: The Rustics show you the perfect countryside kitchen. The Farm kitchens have less bling, they are more sane but nonetheless lovely. Traditionally Elegant is just that: timeless elegance, subtlety and lots of great details. Finally, the Modernos: sleek, clean lines and glossy surfaces for you modern-lovers.   The Rustics This rustic kitchen would be perfect in a chalet or a mountain cottage. A perfect setting for a countryside family breakfast. (although the neighbouring house in the window seems to be a little close..) … and if you fancy homemade pizza (or really flat bread – don’t l...

Popular Kitchen Lighting Questions – the most common errors
2011-06-07 22:13:00
So from today, I start a new series on kitchen planning topics: let’s collect the knowledge, pepper it with a few ideas. Here are the things you should consider – first, when planning your kitchen lighting. What are the most common kitchen lighting errors made when planning the lighting? The most common lighting error is trying to light all your kitchen with one hanging lamp in the middle of your room. Not only does the single light  become a source of glare any time you look into the kitchen (from the dark to the light.. you planned to use a biiig light, yep?). You also won’t get the needed light on your countertops. Every time you try doing any work you are working in your own shadow. The second most common error is to plan your recessed lighting layout in a grid pattern without any regard to your cabinet plan. The first question you must ask is: “why do I need light here?” Once you know why, then you can pick and plan the type of light you need The thi...

Blue Kitchen
2011-06-06 23:06:00
This gorgeous cottage kitchen wasn’t always this stylish and functional. With no room to cook, cramped counter space, its owners knew they needed to renovate the kitchen of their 1935 cottage in upstate New York. So where did they start? From scratch! Since any upgrades would be a waste of money unless the quite bad layout was replanned, they began discussing the kitchen layout. The first step was to alter the floor plan in the 8×10-foot galley kitchen to add the space they needed. The basement door was moved from its place by the range to the dining room. With this change, the kitchen gained 3 feet at one end and extended it on the other end by 9 inches. The move also resulted in a more open and airy feel for the whole area. The cooking range was relocated to the center of the extended wall. This increases landing space on both sides of the range and also provides more counter room for cooking prep. Tip: When reconfiguring your kitchen layout, consider appliance pl...

Innovative Kitchen Sinks
2011-04-07 01:02:00
Whether it is washing your hands or washing your dishes, the humble sink is thought of as utilitarian rather than attractive, eye catching or even innovative! Sinks have reinvented themselves and the materials, shapes, and even the way water flows in and out of them now could even enhance your room. If you are trying to add interest to your home, look what eye catching sinks will do for yours. Innovative fixtures: Let’s face it, innovation in household fixtures have come a long way. The ability to wave your hand in front of a faucet to start the water used to be cutting edge tech. Today, sinks have LED display, warming hand soap dispensers and your everyday sink can be made of gold or see-through glass. When choosing sinks for your bathroom or kitchen research new plumbing innovations, as they appear on the market every single day. If you want the latest in home sink innovations, visit local house wares and home builder shows, or seek them out online. This is where the latest an...

Futuristic kitchen from Electrolux
2011-03-18 20:01:00
Kitchen is a place where you spend many hours cooking different, tasty meals. The design of the kitchen becomes important if you want to save time and be comfortable yet efficient at the same time. Marcello Zuffo designed a futuristic kitchen for the 2008 Electrolux Design Awards. Although the furniture and the kitchen equipment seem to have their own place normally, in this design you will find all them in one place. It’s not entirely obvious at the first sight, but this kitchen is quite compact too – You do not need to move yourself away while you are cooking, so you will save more time for your own personal interest and move faster. This futuristic design will make your cooking hours become more attractive and your house more beautiful and modern. Its design is extremely interesting and has nothing in common with a traditional kitchen design.Take a look at it and you will convince yourself of all these qualities of this type of kitchen.

Kitchen remodeling in a down economy – part 2.
2011-01-20 22:27:00
In the next part of the series, I show you four more ideas to refresh your kitchen on a budget. Replace the kitchen floor Besides the countertop and the cabinets, the floor is the third element which determines the look of your kitchen. You need to be careful on floor choice though – kitchen floors need to be durable to resist to the tear and wear you will subject it to. If you don’t have a ton of money to spend, you can choose stone (again, local sourcing will help you), tiles or vinyl. If you like wood better, get laminate or engineered hardwood floor. Probably hardwood is   better, as laminate does not really like water that much. For more information on hardwood flooring, I’ve already written on my adventure with it. Change the window covering Windows – if you have them – are always an important focal point of your kitchen. When talking about window covering, I don’t really mean curtains – they are a bit ‘too much’ for a kitchen, not to men...

Kitchen remodeling in a down economy – part 1.
2011-01-19 00:32:00
As house values are down across the board and loans / mortgages are harder to get, homeowners are finding few easy-money options for grand remodels. But hey, you probably should not do that anyway! Instead, why not go after projects that cost less, or even garner practical savings and keep their value much better when it comes time to sell. This is very true for kitchens: usually oneof the (if not THE) most expensive room in your home, a remodel can even cost anything upwards of $50.000 – which can be as much as 10% of the value of your home.  Instead of spending a ton of money, let’s see a few options on modest, practical, recessionproof improvements that build a home’s long-term value while conserving energy or just allow you to rest and enjoy your kitchen. The countertop Actually, a no-brainer really. This is probably the largest single surface you see, so choose wisely and the way your kitchen looks can change overnight. If money were no object, probably you woul...

Isola Kitchen (s)
2011-01-17 22:05:00
If you’re like me, you’ll love this modern kitchen I’ve just found. It’s called Isola and comes from Italy, made by a company called LISA. Why LISA? It means: Luxury IS an Attitude. Now that’s a name! Now let’s see the kitchen: The Isola kitchen is entirely made of steel which – besides being beautiful (if a bit difficult to keep clean off fingerprints) – makes its sleek shape possible. The Isola kitchen has a cooktop, some work-surface and a sink built in and comes with a matching hood. Where would you put this? Surely not next to a wall, this piece of furniture (shall I say art?) is made to be on display. Also, you’ll need a quite sizeable kitchen for it to look best. It might not have the practical tidbits (like, er….. drawers?) its more boxy counterparts do, but if you have the kitchen this piece of furniture fits into, this is probably the last thing to worry about. But wait, there’s more….. While look...

Moving and colors again
2008-02-05 18:23:00
Today's theme is colors again. Interior designers, painters, etc and probably you all use color swatches (those little stacks of colored papers) when trying to find "your real colours". Colors here are usually presented linearly, one after another, in the order they are on a color wheel. But what do you do if you don't have the time, or decide that the color wheel is simply not for you? If you use the net (ehh... reading this, I presume you do ;) you can find inspiration in every corner.
