Gestational Diabetes: What it Means for Me and My Baby By Mike Wilson
2008-03-26 23:49:00
Gestational diabetes is a type of diabetes that starts during pregnancy. If you have diabetes, your body isn't able to use the sugar (glucose) in your blood as well as it should, so the level of sugar in your blood becomes higher than normal. How can gestational diabetes affect me and my baby? High sugar levels in your blood can be unhealthy for both you and your baby. If the diabetes isn't treated, your baby may be more likely to have problems at birth. For example, your baby may have a low blood sugar level or jaundice, or your baby may weigh much more than is normal. Gestational diabetes can also affect your health. For most women with gestational diabetes, the main worry is that too much glucose will end up in the baby's blood. When that happens, your baby's pancreas needs to produce more insulin to process the extra glucose. All this excess blood sugar and insulin can cause your baby to make more fat and put on extra weight, particularly in the upper body. Bec...

Foods to Increase Fertility - What to Eat When Trying to Conceive
2008-02-08 16:12:00
Foods to Increase Fertility - What to Eat When Trying to Conceive By Stacy Summers Your diet can either increase or decrease your fertility. If you are trying to conceive, it is important that you eat these foods to increase your fertility. In many ways this fertility diet is common sense--the healthier you eat, the more likely you are to increase your fertility and conceive. Vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and nuts and legumes are the most important foods to increase fertility. These foods are helpful in a variety of way. They are full of vitamins and minerals, provide your body with plenty of fiber, and are low in trans fat, excessive sugar, and refined carbohydrates. Green leafy vegetables, whole grains, and nuts are high in both folic acid and vitamin B6. Folic acid protects the fetus for when pregnancy does occur while B6 acts as a regulator of reproductive hormones. Make sure that you eat plenty of fruit--especially fruit high in vitamin C such as oranges. Citru...

Proper Weight Loss Can Increase Your Chance Of Becoming Pregnant
2008-02-07 14:27:00
Not many people are aware that being obese and overweight actually decreases a woman's chance of getting pregnant. According to a study conducted by Amsterdam's Academic Medical Center, women who have a body mass index (BMI) of 30 and above are less likely to bear children than those whose BMI are 21-29, which is considered the normal BMI levels. In short, the higher your BMI is, the more difficult it will be for you to get pregnant. More precisely, the statistics show that individuals who have a BMI of over 40 have 43% lesser chance of bearing a child than women who have normal body mass. Moreover, women who have a BMI between 35 and 40 are also 26% less likely to get pregnant using natural methods. Underlying Reasons If you and your partner have been trying to conceive for several years without any success, you may want to have your BMI analyzed and your weight checked. The main reason behind this phenomenon is the hormonal imbalance found in women who are overweight or obese....

10 Ways To Build Positive Self Esteem In Children
2008-01-30 13:47:00
10 Ways To Build Positive Self Esteem In Children By Andrea Ralls One of the core things we can all agree on as parents is that helping a child to develop positive self-esteem is very important. It is one of the corner stones to a mentally healthy life. Positive self-esteem allows children to be brave and reach out to try new things. Without knowing it, a positive feeling of self-worth allows children to fail without being failures. A parent, who through actions, shows a child that no matter what he does he is loved, helps their child develop a positive sense of belonging. And it is the belief that they belong, that what they say and do matters, empowers children to have self-respect. We have modified ten ways to build self-esteem that we found on-line at the parent center. 1) Give unconditional love. A child's self-esteem flourishes with the kind of no-strings-attached devotion that says, "I love you, no matter who you are or what you do." Your child benefits the most when ...

Organic Baby Clothes
2008-01-30 13:26:00
Organic Baby Clothes Organic Baby Clothes By Jason Bourne Babies are often the epitome of pureness and softness. Many parents are now focused on using the most natural products for their children. That has prompt a trend in Organic Baby Clothes. For the past few years, healthy organic diet become a part of our day. More and more people are nowadays aware what food they buy and where does this food come from. It is no surprise that more people rather pay slightly more for the food that comes from organic/free farm source, compare to usual wholesale goods filled in the shelves of big chain supermarkets. I became one of them. But it is not just an organic food that has been in a focus, it is organic clothes too. Especially when we are talking about the clothes for our little precious babies, who depends on us, adults. It is our decision what is the best for our babies. Creating a pure, natural environment is a vital decision for a growing number of parents. With our children ...

Causes of Childhood Obesity
2008-01-28 14:13:00
Childhood obesity has become an epidemic in the United States. Today over nine million children over the age of six are considered obese. Childhood obesity is caused by many different factors including environmental, social and genetic. This article will discuss each of these causes and what you can do as a parent to prevent obesity in your children. The environment in which your child lives could contribute to childhood obesity. Today many streets, towns and suburbs are designed to discourage walking and other physical activities. Only about 1 child out of every 5 in the US will participate in some form of extra-curricular physical activity outside of school. The slowing down of the US economy and the rise in gas prices is forcing families to cut expenses. One expense that more and more families are cutting back on is their grocery bill. They are purchasing more convenience foods that are high in fat and have very little nutritional value. These foods are usually easy to prepare...

This week was crazy! We got our car repossesed so I have been busy trying to get another one. Our little Neon just is not big enough for our whole family. Today is the terror's birthday party. She turns two on January 31. We are going to my parents house for her party. I still have to get her a birthday present. This week has been extremely cold here in Wisconsin. We have had below zero temperatures all week. It hurts just to step outside. I am looking forward to spring. I started my new blog, Musings of a Broke Mom this week. Check it out if you haven't yet. My son is trying to crawl and he's getting his first tooth. When I put him on his belly he pushes himself up like he is trying to do push ups then he scoots himself forward. He started to just go backwards but now he figured out how to go forward. It won't be long now and I will have two little ones getting into everything! Baby Colic - 10 Simple Ways to Help Your Baby Sleep Through the Night
2008-01-25 19:16:00
Anyone that has had a baby knows that the worst sound you can hear is your baby crying - BUT HOW DO YOU HELP TO STOP IT? Although everyone knows that all newborns cry and show some level of fussiness, when a child who is basically healthy cries for more than 3 hours straight, it is more than likely baby colic that is causing it. It is estimated that up to 25% of all babies have colic! And it usually starts between the 3rd and 6th week of age and last for anything up to 4-5 months. That's alot of lost sleep, stress and heartache for any baby and parent to endure for that long. If your baby is still crying to the extreme after that timeframe, chances are that some sort of health problem may be the problem instead. To help you easily identify if your baby is showing signs of baby colic and not a sickness, here are some great tips from our brand new ebook release "Colic - 10 Ways to Help Your Baby Sleep Through the Night - A Simple Guide for You to Learn about Effective Colic Cures...

The Awful Truth About Television: The little box that transformed society
2008-01-25 15:00:00
by Katherine Westphal Introducing TV Based on how engrained the television is in our society, one might think that it had been around for centuries. With the ubiquitous presence of TV?s in houses, schools, banks, cars, cell phones, and more, people wonder how they ever survived without their daily dose of Oprah and Monday Night Football. Yet, television was not officially introduced to the world until in 1939 at the World?s Fair. At that time, many people did not think that families would have enough time or patience to sit down for long periods in front of a flickering screen. ?The average American family hasn?t time for it,? said one commentator. TV ownership explodes World War II stalled the development of television. After the war though, TV sales took off faster than you could say ?Hi Ho Silver, Away!? By 1950, about 9% of American homes had a television set. By 1953, half of all households had a TV. By 1962, 90% of all households had a set . Today 98% of American househol...

Britney Spears, can keep her babies! Atleast for now! by Sacreeta Venefic
2007-10-11 15:43:00
The stiff demands placed on Britney Spears during the custody battle with Kevin Federline on September 17, 007, is small potatoes compared to losing her children. The allegations placed against her by her ex-husband sounded a bit eccentric as bitterness can get the better of anyone, however, they apparently were taken seriously by the courts, but luckily for Britney, it was a courtroom with compassion. The court documents were printed on Celebrity News Site TMZ.com, that were the results from the hearing over their two boys Sean Preston aged 2, and Jayden James, aged 1.Superior Court Commissioner Scott Gordon reportedly stated. "Based on the evidence presented, the court finds that there is habitual, frequent and continuous use of controlled substances and alcohol by the petitioner," namely Britney. Gordon ordered both parents to complete a "parenting without conflict" program, and advised them both to refrain from making derogatory remarks about the other in front of the children.A...

2007-10-10 14:18:00
I remember it vividly. It was shortly after my divorce was final and the highly emotional state had calmed a bit. Although it did not happen suddenly, the realization hit me like a slap in the face. I didn't know who I was.The I that I was looking for had been pushed aside for years, by me. I take total responsibility for it, I own it. That was the good part, because I knew it was in my power to get it back and so can you.Like most women, we tend to put our husband and family's needs ahead of our own needs. Sometimes we actually think we are being selfish if we do something for ourselves. I won't speak for all women, but I would imagine that most women feel this way. We are caretakers, peacemakers, planners, organizers, chauffeurs, chefs and the list goes on. I must admit that I loved being all those things, but what I didn't realize was that I neglected my own needs in the process. I was at the point where I couldn't define 'my needs'.So, what do you do if you are in this sa...

But do you really know what's really in the 'child-friendly' foodstuffs available on the market today? Get The Facts About Breast Plastic Surgery And Breast Implants Now - Avoid
2007-10-08 21:24:00
Breast implants have been used since about 1895 to augment the size or shape of women's breasts. The earliest known implant was attempted by Dr. Czerny, using a woman's own fatty tissue from a lipoma on her back. In some countries, for cosmetic breast plastic surgery, health insurers will reimburse insertion of breast implants only for clinical indications, meaning, congenital abnormalities, sex-reassignment surgery or breast reconstruction - usually following a mastectomy. And non-clinical indications, which are the most common reason women get breast implants, are considered cosmetic and are not covered by health insurers. The first woman implanted with silicone implants was back in 1962. For women with very little breast tissue, or who are having post-mastectomy reconstruction, plastic surgeons believe that silicone gel implants are the superior device; but in patients with more breast tissue, saline implants can look very similar to silicone gel implants. One manufacturer produ...

Woman's Health and Workout Ideas by Jennifer Felker
2007-10-05 20:59:00
Fitness, muscle-building and gym work-outs have gone beyond the traditional all-male club. With the hype over fitness and health and a healthy lifestyle, women have joined the club as well. However, men and women have different fitness needs.Women's fitness and exercise needs are focused on the muscles of the upper back. Most of their exercise work-outs are also designed for the stomach muscles, especially those who have just given birth. At the same time, exercises for women are usually designed for weight loss. Which Type of Carseat to Buy? by David Hoffman
2007-10-04 19:52:00
Many people are confused by the different types of carseats out there. And unfortunately, many parents go ahead and buy the wrong type of carseat without researching, placing their loved ones in unnecessary danger. Childseat Center wants to make sure you know which type of carseat is right for your baby.Below are the four basic types of carseats for babies and children.1. Infant CarseatsInfant carseats are the smallest. They are intended for newborns up to 12 months and 20 pounds, although a few (more expensive) models can support children up to 35 pounds. All infant carseats are rear-facing, as required by law. It has been shown that rear-facing carseats protect babies better.Infant carseats are usually used to carry babies around, and most have a companion travel stroller. The manufacturers design them to make them convenient for new baby parents, in getting in and out of vehicles and getting babies around.2. Convertible CarseatsConvertible carseats are bigger. Minerals - A Vital Part Of A Breastfeeding Diet by Robin OBrien
2007-10-02 21:36:00
When breastfeeding, your diet is very important. The quality of breast milk can be reduced if the diet of a breastfeeding mother is poor or deficient in certain substances. Minerals are very important to your baby; there are building blocks that will help to ensure your baby's development now and in the future.Your breast milk contains all the nutrients your baby needs to thrive. A baby that is exclusively breastfeed only gets the minerals it needs from its mother. Therefore, it's extremely important that a breastfeeding mother is getting her daily quota of minerals. But for many new mothers, the early days, weeks and months after the birth can be a tiring time and eating a healthy diet that contains all the minerals it should may not seem possible. The good news is that eating a healthy, well-balanced diet isn't that hard; eating meat, dairy products 5 fruit and vegetables every day is all you need do.As well as other nutrients, like vitamins and protein, minerals play an import...

Ovulation and Fertilization
2007-10-01 00:43:00
By: Vidula ChopraWhat is the best time to conceive? In order for the woman to get pregnant, one of her eggs needs to combine with a man's sperm (fertilisation). The woman's body releases an egg (ovulation) roughly 14 days before her period. She is most likely to conceive during this time. The ovulation period is the time when the woman's ovary releases an egg (ova)for fertilization. The ovulation period roughly lasts for 24-48 hours during acycle. Sperms, on the other hand, live for around 3 to 5 days, and sometimes even longer. Therefore, there is only a very short time each month when you are most likely to conceive. It may take up to a year to get pregnant, especially if your periodsare infrequent or irregular, so there is no need to worry if youare not pregnant after a couple of months. You can use this timeto enjoy yourself without using contraception. When does ovulation take place during a cycle?A woman's menstruation cycle is generally 28 days long, butcould last anywhere b...

Coffee Can Help Protect Women's Memories
2007-09-26 20:22:00
By: Francisco MejiasA recent study by researchers at the French National Instituteof Medical Research finds that coffee protects women fromage-related memory loss. The study tracked more than 7,000 menand women living in three French cities. The researchersobserved the subjects' health and mental function and questionedthem about their past and present eating habits, friends, anddaily activities. The study found that the more coffee drank, the better the effects appeared to be for women's memoryfunction, however men did not receive the same benefit.According to lead researcher, Karen Ritchie, the information gathered from the study was used to identify the specific impact of caffeine on certain aspects of women's lives. They found that women who drank more than three cups of coffee a day, or caffeine equivalent in tea, were able to retain more of their verbal and, to a lesser extent, visual memories over four years. The female subjects displayed a 33 percent lower risk of having v...

Use Family Or Class Meetings For Problem Solving by Tulum Dothee
2007-09-25 23:07:00
How old should children be for family meetings?Never underestimate your child's ability to participate and benefit from a family meeting. I have done them with success with children 15 months old and would not hesitate to include an infant. The thing to remember is that you are creating a format so that you can come up with solutions as a family. This makes the family unit the authority instead of just you (which is a set up for power struggles). So when you begin having meetings don't expect them to be the cure all. Instead break them down into steps to ensure success. I am grateful to Rudolph Dreikurs, who introduced me to meetings in The Challenge of Child Training: A Parent's Guide. After using them in my Montessori School and with my family for the last 19 years I have come up with what works best for me. Here are the things to remember:Family meetings should occur once a week on the same day, at the same time.Schedule a meeting between meals when folks are rested. I like 11...
