Reston's Vibrant Economy Part 10: IPOs, Venture Funds, and a Farewell to th
2008-01-08 16:17:00 Once again, it's time to pull the Boxter out of your carport or your perpetually open garage, because it's time to go back to the crazy, go-go days of the late 1990s!One of those hip, late 90s venture capital funds, no doubt run by guys with ponytails and black turtlenecks, invested $7 million in Reston's Avail Media Inc., which sounds like it has something to do with video on demand (cough cough hotel room porn cough cough).Meanwhile, Reston's hottest soon-to-be IPO is NVR Inc.... a home building firm. Good timing, that!Reston's ICO Communications is at the Consumer Electronics Show, pitching a service that uses a combination of cellular and satellite technology to bring TV to your car. Watching Judge Judy while zipping along the Beltway at 60 miles an hour -- what could possibly go wrong? The service will be up and running as soon as their satellite launches, so watch for a plume of smoke shooting up from Golf Course Island sometime soon.A company called CRG West bought a 285... Res-TOWN: We're Not Dead Yet!
2008-01-04 16:12:00 After being given the smackdown by every legislative, community, and association group, with the possible exception of the National Council of Churches and the Reston Combat Hang Gliding Club, you'd think the Res-TOWN folks would be down for the count, right? Not so much.Despite some opposition from the county and other Reston-based groups, the plan to incorporate Reston as a town continues to move forward.Saying the Res-TOWN initiative encountered "some" opposition is a bit like saying the Titanic encountered a spot of cold weather, but let's move on.On Saturday at a hearing of the Fairfax County legislative delegation, the Fairfax County Federation of Citizens Association plans to request that a task force form to "address the mechanical issues of how the self governance of Reston should be implemented, identify and analyze the options, and make recommendations as to the governance of the proposed town of Reston," according to Jeff Parnes, president of the Fairfax County Federat... 2008-01-04 15:54:00 Herndon continues to be a shining example for its less enlightened neighbor to the east.First, they're doing gangbuster business in bringing in the convention trade, or at least the racist convention trade:The biannual New Century Foundation convention is organized by Oakton resident Jared Taylor, who calls himself a "race realist" and publishes American Renaissance magazine, which he has done for nearly 20 years. The 2008 convention will take place Feb. 22-24 in Herndon."Taylor is a Nazi pig," Jeff Adler, spokesman for the Jewish Defense Organization, a militant group not affiliated with the Jewish Defense League, said in a phone interview. Now that doesn't sound very tolerant! Just because such luminaries as David Duke somehow show up to the group's meeting each year doesn't make them bad guys, right?"Yes, David Duke has attended despite being asked to stay away, but it's like if you have a restaurant and David Duke eats there, does that make you a neo-Nazi?" This Week in Crime: a mob scene in South Reston
2008-01-04 15:47:00 That awesome New Year's stabbing? Just a run of the mill mob attack.A Reston mob allegedly attacked two 19-year-old Maryland men after they dropped off a friend at her home near the intersection of Glade Drive and Marginella Drive. On Tuesday, Jan. 1, around 1:30 a.m., the two men attempted to drive away when a group of 10 to 15 men surrounded the victims' vehicle. One of the men reached through a back window and stabbed a passenger in the back. Another member of the group punched the driver. The driver pulled away and called 911. Once help arrived, the stabbing victim was flown to Inova Fairfax Hospital. The driver was not seriously injured.Police arrested a 17-year-old Reston man in connection with the assault and charged him with assault by mob, destruction of property, and brandishing of a firearm. There were no descriptions of other group members provided to police and there have been no arrests for the stabbing.Fairfax County police say the mob assault "could" be gang-related... Road Rules, Reston style
2008-01-03 06:05:00 Lots of awesome news about roads in and around Reston :First, Rt. 7 will be widened from somewhere beyond Reston Avenue west to Loudoun County. Of course, no public project even tangentially involving Reston (cough cough schools cough cough Metro) can get underway without some nearby, usually overentitled community crying foul. Oakton's currently otherwise occupied, so who's this week's winner? Survey says.... Great Falls! What is particularly irritating to Great Falls residents is the perception that most of the users of the new turn lanes on Route 7 will be Loudoun County residents using the Georgetown Pike as a cut-through commuter route."You are providing cut-through routes for people from Loudoun County," one Great Falls resident said."We are here working with facts. We can't say here are 300 people on the Georgetown Pike; let's build an exclusive left-turn lane for them," said Salahshoor.Funny, we thought being exclusive is what Great Falls is all about. Happy New Year!
2008-01-03 05:01:00 Reston rang in 2008 not with a bang, but with a stabbing off Glade Drive. In Reston, authorities said that at about 2 a.m. on Tuesday, officers were called to Glade Drive and Mariginella Street on a report of a stabbing.Once at the scene, police found a man suffering from non-life-threatening stab wounds.Police did not say whether that victim was taken to a local hospital.Unfortunately, our longstanding theory is true: Crime has escalated from sticks and stones to something worse. Mauve-colored memories: a brief but informative look back at 2007
2007-12-28 07:08:00 So what have we learned in the year rapidly coming to a close? Besides how to use various combinations of the words "mauve," "awesome," and "design review board" to create a blog, that is. Here's a quick recap of the Important Life Lessons we've all learned in and around Reston this year.• Residents interested in self-determination aren't principled. They're a bunch of radicals.• In times of corporate uncertainty, don't pick up a copy of What Color is Your Parachute? Instead, rent Footloose.• Forget cheerleading and band programs. There's no better gauge of a school's academic quality and/or desirability than whether its students play with Bratz.• Massive developments are best planned on the opposite side of major highways from Metro stations.• While Reston's fake downtown may hate America, at least, unlike that other planned community in Maryland, it doesn't hate Christmas.• Giant, for lack of a better word, sucks.• Tysons Corner is too beautiful to be marred... Another week, another secret plan
2007-12-14 15:45:00 Another week, another awesome plan to fix South Lakes High School's boundaries, this one courtesy of Fairfax County Schools itself. So what of the new Option 5?Some students from Floris Elementary School would be bound for South Lakes High School instead of Westfield High School and Fox Mill Elementary School students would attend South Lakes instead of Oakton High School. Some students from Wolf Trap Elementary would attend South Lakes and students from Navy Elementary School would move from Chantilly High School to Oakton. There would be no change for Herndon High School. What does Herndon High School have that the others don't? To start with, something to lose other than its parents' sense of entitlement--namely, a significant chunk of its AP classes and electives. But don't put down those fun black T-shirts just yet, 'cuz it ain't over until the last upset parent sings! While Herndon High School is not impacted in Option 5, the scenario is not what staff will present as a fina... This week in crime: A little like Caddyshack, only with felony charges
2007-12-14 14:33:00 Eight people were arrested for a series of burglaries -- 27 of them, to be exact -- affecting Darwinly-challenged Reston and Fair Oaks residents:The alleged suspects targeted homes where victims had left their garage doors open. The suspects entered through the garages and removed sporting goods, primarily golf clubs. So many things are wrong with this paragraph, we don't even know where to begin. But if you're not part of Reston's hoi polloi (meaning you have an actual garage instead of an awesome 70s carport), don't think your kid should have to associate with peers who might have played with Bratz dolls at some point, and lack enough common sense to close your friggin' garage door, there's some good news:The Reston District station still has unclaimed property recovered from the burglaries. If you believe any of this property might belong to you, please call Detective Estess at 703-478-0904.We're sure Mssr. Estess will speak nice and slowly if you call. More About: Crime , Week , Felony

2007-12-14 14:20:00 Coming soon on Reston Heights: a fancy, high-class hotel will rise Phoenix-like from the ashes ofnear the Chili's and Popeyes. How fancy, you might ask? How high-class? Two words: scented candles! The Westin Reston Heights announced Thursday that its official opening date will be April 10 and established a sales office where it is showcasing the new hotel's amenities. The Westin brand, which aims to create a calming environment for travelers, provides guests with fresh flowers, the hotel's signature pillowtop bed and White Tea by Westin scented candles. The 191-room Reston Heights hotel will feature 1,200 square feet of meeting space, a workout facility, a rooftop pool and a restaurant serving locally produced sustainable seafood, according to David Catalon, sales and marketing director. Of spoiled brats and Bratz
2007-12-13 14:35:00 More fallout from the ongoing feud between Christine Arakelian and Stu Gibson: a recall petition is apparently making its way around the less "socioeconomically diverse" corners of the Hunter Mill district. But there's more! The people pushing this recall fed the reporter from the Examiner another unprovable allegation:This issue is bigger than one aggrieved parent. Gibson is the mastermind behind the controversial Western County redistricting, and has reportedly cut a deal with other Board members to exempt some areas from the controversial redistricting.Clearly, Stu is a bit of a jackass. And the fact that some schools -- cough cough Langley -- aren't part of the redistricting proposals is a bit fishy. But these people are also so concerned about their property values in such economically challenged areas as Oakton Woods they're willing to grasp at any straw to discredit the redistricting process. On the other hand, the allegation's been posted on another blog associated with... 2007-12-13 14:18:00 When people talk about new urbanism and awesome, earth tone-intensive planned communities, they usually mention Reston and Columbia, Maryland, in the same breath. Like Reston, Columbia is a product of the 1960s, a planned community which features much of the same persistent earth tones and questionable contemporary architecture. Unlike Reston and its awesome fake downtown, though, Columbia opted to plop a generic shopping mall right in the center of town.Well, maybe not so generic. For the first time, the Columbia Mall has ditched its Poinsettia Christmas Tree, this metal-framed thing that held up a bunch of potted plants prompting people to open their wallets a little bit wider at the nearby Bon-Ton or Orange Julius or whatever."The Tree was a symbol of how Columbia was different," said Dennis Lane, who grew up in the town, blogs about it and writes a column for the Business Monthly, a local paper. Wheeeeeeee!
2007-12-12 15:50:00 The falling housing market is pushing Fairfax County into a $220 million budget shortfall. The crunch on government spending is expected to be worse in other communities, including Loudoun and Prince William, where housing values are slumping more dramatically and foreclosure rates are higher. But the news that Fairfax, an inner suburb with more stable property values and a robust job market, is suddenly feeling such profound consequences of the housing bust suggests that the effects on the regional economy are just beginning to be felt and could last for years, county budget analysts said.Foreclosures in Fairfax have jumped from just under 200 to nearly 4,000 this year, and housing prices are falling:The average price of a house in Fairfax County was down 4 percent, to $500,462, last month, compared with the previous year, Long said. And the numbers will probably worsen next year.As your friendly neighborhood Realtor(tm) will tell you, that means this is an excellent time to go bar...
Hope Blooms eternal
2007-12-12 15:33:00 Lake Anne residents aren't giving up on their dream of having Bloom, Food Lion's slightly less NASCAR- and bleach-intensive chain of grocery stores, squeeze into the stucco wasteland better known as the Tall Oaks Shopping Center. They're writing postcards.Bentana Woods cluster president Tara Coonin is opening up a more traditional line of communication to find a solution with a postcard campaign. To date, Coonin said she has handed out nearly 1,500 postcards addressed to the Bloom Grocery Store Real Estate Department, urging the chain to open a location in Tall Oaks. Residents simply have to sign the card and stick a stamp on it.A woman who answered the phone in Bloom Real Estate Department said they've “been enjoying those, there's been so many.” The typical efforts involve a couple phone calls, she said.Awesome! We're glad they're enjoying the postcards. But who wouldn't enjoy getting 1,500 postcards like this one?Meanwhile, there's still the question of whether the Ta... More About: Hope , Eternal

2007-12-07 22:14:00 An arrest has been made in a gang-related assault outside of the Hunters Woods Burger King back in May. Believing a teenage boy was a member of a rival gang, in May, a group of males approached him outside a fast-food restaurant and beat him up. Now, a Centreville man has been arrested in connection with that crime. He is Brian Swain, 20, of the Singleton's Grove community. And last Thursday, Nov. 29, Fairfax County police charged him with malicious wounding by mob and participation in a criminal street gang. The beating occurred May 12, around 7 p.m. Police say the victim was outside the Burger King at 2270 Hunters Woods Plaza in Reston when he was approached by the assailants."The subjects questioned the victim about his gang affiliation, asking him, 'Are you MS [Mara Salvatrucha]?'" wrote the detective. A reprive for the Macaroni Grill
2007-12-06 15:33:00 Yet another delay for Lerner Enterprises' plan to redevelop the Spectrum Center, a godforsaken sea of big-box strip malls in what was originally supposed to be a high-density area matching the neighboring Reston Town Center. At a presentation to the P&Z in March, Lerner representative Mark Looney outlined a redevelopment plan that would put 1,350 residential units and almost 676,000 square feet of office and retail space on the 19-and-a-half-acre property, the current site of Best Buy, Barnes and Noble, Citibank and other retail. And the Macaroni Grill ! Don't forget the Macaroni Grill! The Town Center Office Building and Harris Teeter are not owned by Lerner and therefore not included in redevelopment plans. The plan would connect the separate segments of the Spectrum Center, which are now divided by Bowman Towne Drive. 2007-12-05 17:00:00 The Virginia Department of Education has supported a complaint by one-time school board candidate Christine Arakelian ("If I thought Reston was bad, I wouldn't live here") against Hunter Mill School Board member Stu Gibson. The letter, dated Nov. 27, said that it found Fairfax County Public Schools and Gibson in noncompliance with requirements regarding confidentiality of student records. The complaints came after Arakelian said Gibson revealed and discussed the school records of her child, a student in Fairfax County Public Schools, during this year's election campaign.Gibson contends that any information he discussed had previously been disclosed publicly by Arakelian. The VDOE "is wrong because what [the investigator] found was that I disclosed something from a protected record. Fairfax County to Res-TOWN: Drop Dead
2007-12-05 16:47:00 It's one thing if your own "downtown" doesn't want to become part of the nifty Ye Olde Town e of Reston, complete with costumed interpreters showing tourists how to paint stucco muave and a bell-ringing town crier reading printouts of this website on the hour. But now Fairfax County 's top executive is calling the idea "radical." Fairfax County Executive Anthony Griffin urged the rejection of what he called a “radical” proposal. In perhaps the strongest public criticism to date of the campaign to incorporate the planned community, Griffin argued in a Nov. 27 memo to local lawmakers that the change would fragment the county, reduce revenues, seize private property and disrupt planning.“Why should the unincorporated sections of other districts, many of which predate Reston by scores of years, not be able to become towns?” Griffin asked in the memo, rhetorically. “If Reston, then why not incorporate McLean, Centreville, Burke, Springfield, Annandale, Mount Vernon, Franconia a... 2007-12-05 16:27:00 Herndon has joined something called the Coalition on Illegal Aliens, a group of Minuteman-intensive area localities. It's in fine company with such other enlightened locales as the town of Culpeper, Shenandoah County and Prince William, where the campaign theme of the fall elections was pretty much "let's hate on the immigrants."Martin Bernal, a community leader in Culpeper, said it has seemed lately as though the whole Latino community has been under attack. "Things have really picked up since Prince William came out with that plan," he said. "They are blaming us for everything that's going wrong in this country and with the economy."But Herndon's even more awesome! Like Nixon, they have a secret plan
2007-12-04 16:02:00 You know those four awesome redistricting options Fairfax County cooked up to solve problems with South Lakes High School and its neighboring schools once and for all? Well, not so much.Dean Tistadt, chief operating officer for facilities and transportation services, called the ideas a starting point. "I would be surprised if any of these scenarios ended up being presented . . . to the School Board," he told the crowd last night. That meeting, the second in a series of three planned to discuss South Lakes redistricting, drew another 2,000 parents, all presumably worried about their respective schools' band programs.Along with none of the four options being considered, apparently the idea of making SLHS a magnet school is off the table, too. 2007-11-30 16:25:00 Yesterday was the final day for the Tall Oaks Giant, which we've written about once or twice. So we did a bit of that "citizen journalism" all the cool kids are talking about and visited the store one last time. A security guard wandered around the front of the store, making sure no one left with an unauthorized souvenir or a bottle of Super G peppercorns. A few desultory customers were wandered the store in a daze, and the one cash register open was decorated with kids' cards saying things like "We'll miss you."It's the end of an era, and quite possibly, the end of Tall Oaks as a viable commercial center, at least until it's demolished and replaced with something even more ...
