Israel rebuffs Egypt-Gaza border deployments
2008-02-07 11:39:00
By Jeffrey Heller JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israel i leaders rejected proposals to secure the Gaza Strip's breached frontier with Egypt with additional Egyptian border guards or an international force, government officials said on Wednesday. Israel's Foreign Ministry had suggested giving the nod to Egypt to double the number of its guards at the border to 1,500. Under an Israeli-Egyptian peace agreement, the number of troops that can be deployed along the frontier is limited. The officials said Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and his security cabinet, which includes his foreign and defence ministers, rebuffed the idea, as well as the deployment of any international force at the frontier. Israeli defence officials have questioned whether Cairo is making a real effort to secure the Gaza border, which Hamas Islamists in control of the territory blasted open at the Rafah crossing on Jan. 23 in defiance of an Israeli-led blockade. "The minister of defence thinks it won't make any diff...
Jews disappointed by changes to Vatican prayer
2008-02-07 11:39:00
By Philip Pullella VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Jewish leaders have reacted with disappointment to the Vatican 's new version of a Good Friday prayer for the conversion of Jews and said it could set back inter-religious relations by decades. In changes to the contested Latin prayer announced on Tuesday, the Vatican removed a reference to Jewish "blindness" over Christ and deleted a phrase that asked God to "remove the veil from their hearts". But the new version of the prayer still says Jews should recognise Jesus Christ as the saviour of all men and still has an underlying call to conversion they wanted omitted. "While we appreciate that some of the deprecatory language has been removed ... we are deeply troubled and disappointed that the framework and intention to petition God for Jews to accept Jesus as Lord was kept intact," said Abraham Foxman, U.S. national director of the Anti-Defamation League. Foxman denounced the changes as "cosmetic rev...

Pope meets mother of Colombian hostage Betancourt
2008-02-07 11:39:00
VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Pope Benedict on Wednesday met the mother of French-Colombian politician Ingrid Betancourt, who has been held captive since 2002 by Colombian rebels. Yolanda Pulecio, who was dressed in black, exchanged words with the Pope for a few minutes at the end of his weekly general audience in the Vatican. The Vatican did not immediately issue a statement on the meeting. The Pope and French President Nicolas Sarkozy were believed to have discussed the kidnapping of Betancourt, a former presidential candidate, when Sarkozy visited the Vatican last month. Two women hostages were freed by Colombia's Marxist rebels on Jan 10, raising hopes for dozens more languishing in secret camps.

Ecuador volcano spews rock, hundreds evacuated
2008-02-07 11:39:00
BANOS, Ecuador (Reuters) - Ecuador's Tungurahua volcano spewed molten rock, gas and ash on Wednesday, increasing its activity and prompting authorities to evacuate hundreds of villagers living on the shadow of the mountain. Tungurahua, which means "Throat of Fire" in the native Quichua language, is a volcano 80 miles (130 km) south of the capital, Quito. It last erupted in August 2006 and has been rumbling and belching up rock, gas and ash since January. "It was a really big shake coming from the volcano and that forced the civil defense to evacuate the population," said civil defense chief Roberto Rodriguez. He said there were no reports of injured or dead, but some local authorities said ash and rock fragments showered some communities located on the slopes of the volcano. Volcano logists expect stronger activity from Tungurahua because it is in the middle of an eruption cycle that began in 1999. "This is an ongoing eruption and we still don't kno...

U.S. vote puts McCain ahead; Clinton, Obama draw
2008-02-07 11:39:00
By John Whitesides, Political Correspondent WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democrats Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton faced a protracted battle while John McCain took charge of the Republican race after the "Super Tuesday" presidential nominating contests in 24 U.S. states. In the biggest day of voting to choose party candidates who will contest the election to succeed President George W. Bush in November, Obama won 13 states and Clinton took eight. Clinton's wins included the key prizes of California and New York, making for a virtual draw in the hard-fought Democratic duel. McCain won nine contests, including victories in California and the Northeast, to take a commanding lead in the Republican race. "Tonight, I think we must get used to the idea that we are the Republican Party front-runner for the nomination," McCain told supporters in Scottsdale, Arizona. "And I don't really mind it one bit." The Arizona senator whose campaign was all but dead las...

Russia says Iran rocket raises nuclear suspicion - Ifx
2008-02-07 11:39:00
MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia said on Wednesday that Iran 's test launch of a rocket raised "suspicion" about the real nature of Tehran's nuclear programme, Interfax news agency quoted a Foreign Ministry official as saying. Iran launched a rocket on Monday designed to carry its first locally-made research satellite next year, showing the country's advances in ballistics at a time when Western powers are already jittery about its nuclear plans. "Any movement in terms of creating such a potential weapon naturally worries us and others. All the more so since it creates suspicion towards Iran about its possible desire to create a nuclear weapon," Interfax quoted Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Losyukov as saying. "Rocket s of such range are one of the components of such a weapons system. Of course this raises concern," he said. The United States, the Islamic Republic's arch foe, called the rocket test "unfortunate" and said it would only fu...

Thai diet guru aims to heal ailing economy
2008-02-07 11:39:00
By Nopporn Wong-Anan BANGKOK (Reuters) - Surapong Suebwonglee, Thai land's new finance minister, is a medical doctor more used to trimming waistlines than fixing economies. But the diet guru insists he has the cure for what ails an economy hobbled by two years of political strife and a bloodless 2006 coup that ousted Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra. "I don't think a finance minister must be a macroeconomic expert," Surapong, secretary-general of the pro-Thaksin People Power Party leading a six-party coalition government, told reporters last month. "We need a person who can get the job done and communicate with the public," said the 50-year-old Surapong, whose family owns a chain of weight-loss clinics. His lack of economic experience has unnerved some business leaders, and fuelled speculation that Thaksin, who is living in exile in Hong Kong and London, will be calling the fiscal shots. Surapong, a former minister in Thaksin's government, said he would ...

Stir-Fried Okra (Bhindi Masala) with Peanuts and Coconut
2008-02-07 07:35:00
One of the most challenging yet interesting part of being a chef is that you often get an opportunity to turn something ordinary into extraordinary, and that's the part I really like! Experimenting with flavors and spices is what makes a cook's life exciting, not always succesful, but definitely exciting. Luckily for all of you, I only share my successful endeavors with you:) And the vegetable that steals the show today is nothing but the simple Okra (Ladyfinger), or "Bhindi", as it's known in India. The trouble we all face while cookng okra is that it can get to be a really "sticky affair", literally. So it helps to fry, or in this case, stir-fry it a little to get rid of that stickiness. But the twist that transforms this simple Bhindi Masala into a delicious and unique okra curry is the addition of peanuts, onions, bread crumbs and some coconut!Ingredients1 packet of freshly-cut okra1/4th cup peanut powder1/2 cup onions - finely chopped1/2 cup grounded bread crumbs1/4th cup shr...

Politics not ethnicity behind Kenya crisis
2008-02-07 06:58:00
By Andrew Cawthorne NAIROBI (Reuters) - Political manipulation rather than ethnic hatred is driving Kenya 's post-election violence, says a leading author and scholar on the east African nation. Oxford University's Professor David Anderson also criticised both sides of Kenya's political divide, saying President Mwai Kibaki was "playing Russian roulette" with Kenya's democracy while opposition leader Raila Odinga was "dead in the water". Anderson -- author of "Histories of the Hanged", about the Mau Mau revolt during British colonial rule in the 1950s -- said he was worried for the future of Kenya, where about 1,000 people have died in unrest following the Dec. 27 vote. "I've always felt that Kenya's middle classes and civil society were strong and robust, and would eventually overcome the problems created by their political elite," he said. "At the moment, I'm probably at the most pessimistic I have been in my entire life. I...

Thailand gets Thaksin-inspired cabinet
2008-02-07 06:58:00
By Nopporn Wong-Anan BANGKOK (Reuters) - Thailand 's new cabinet, packed with supporters of ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, was sworn in by King Bhumibol Adulyadej on Wednesday, marking the return of elected government after a 2006 coup. Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej, who admitted before the Dec. 23 poll he was a proxy for Thaksin, doubled as defence minister -- a slap in the face for the generals who led the coup and an indicator of how low their political star has fallen. Other important posts went to top officials of the People Power Party (PPP), the successor to Thaksin's Thai Rak Thai (Thais Love Thais) party, banned after the coup for electoral fraud. Despite an army-led campaign to discredit Thaksin, his mainly rural supporters flocked to vote in the December election, pushing the PPP to just short of a clear majority and making it the dominant force in a six-party coalition. Former Thaksin spokesman Surapong Suebwonglee, a doctor whose family owns a network...

China says power being restored for millions
2008-02-07 06:58:00
By Chris Buckley TONGREN, China (Reuters) - Power supplies knocked out by fierce winter weather were being restored for millions of Chinese at the start of the Lunar New Year holiday on Wednesday, state media said, but residents in one city were sceptical. Scores have died in snow-related accidents in the run-up to the holiday, one of the greatest annual migrations of humanity, with the usual travel chaos compounded by the coldest winter in 100 years across vast swathes of the south, centre and east. Chenzhou, a city in the central province of Hunan and the worst hit, was getting its power back after being blacked out for 11 days, Xinhua news agency said. But a resident surnamed Cao who lives in the old part of town begged to differ. "It's pitch black here," he told Reuters. "We don't have electricity. Over at my sister's house they have electricity but they were told it would be off later. We were told it would be on by 6, but there's nothing yet." ...

Tornadoes rake U.S. south, at least 20 dead
2008-02-07 06:58:00
By Steve Barnes LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (Reuters) - Tornadoes and thunderstorms ravaged four states in the American South on Tuesday night, killing at least 20 people, injuring dozens and causing widespread damage, emergency services and local media said. The violent storms swept across Arkansas, Tennessee, Kentucky and Mississippi, overturning trucks, trapping people, and smashing houses. Two of the states hit by the tornadoes -- Arkansas and Tennessee -- were involved in "Super Tuesday" as a total of 24 states across the country held nominating contests ahead of November's presidential election. Several candidates expressed condolences to the victims as they addressed supporters and there were media reports that at least four polling stations in western Tennessee were closed because of the storm. In Arkansas, emergency services reported 11 dead after tornadoes hit as many as eight counties. "It's a pretty rough night in the scope of it. I don't know if I can r...

Filipino woman claims share of Bobby Fischer estate
2008-02-07 06:58:00
MANILA (Reuters) - A Filipino woman and her daughter are claiming a share of the estate of late American-born chess legend Bobby Fischer, a lawyer said on Wednesday. Samuel Estimo told Reuters he was gathering documents and evidence to prove that Fischer had a daughter with Marilyn Young in 2001. He said the reclusive chess master had left a $1.95 million estate. "I have with me a copy of the passports, pictures and bank accounts of Fischer's seven-year-old daughter," Estimo said, adding he would file a claim in Iceland. Fischer, who died last month, had renounced his U.S. citizenship and moved to Iceland in 2005. "I believe we have substantial proof to back the claims of Marilyn Young and her daughter Jinky. They even stayed with him in Iceland for three weeks in September 2005." Two nephews and a Japanese woman, who claimed to have married the reclusive chess master, are also contesting Fischer's estate. Washington was also trying to recover money fro...

Turkish ship in flames off Croatian coast
2008-02-07 06:58:00
ZAGREB (Reuters) - A Turkish freight ship caught fire close to Croatian territorial waters on Wednesday and was likely to sink though all crew members and passengers had been rescued, Croatian marine officials said. Croatia's sea and transport ministry said the incident happened 16 nautical miles west of the Adriatic town of Rovinj, but gave no further details. "We will soon release a detailed statement on the incident," the ministry's spokeswoman told Reuters. A local emergency official said the ship, which was heading for Italy, was carrying oil derivatives and trucks and was probably beyond help, although two Croatian fire-fighting planes were trying to extinguish the blaze. State news agency Hina identified the vessel as "Undadriyatik" and said it was sailing towards the Italian Adriatic port of Trieste. It also said 22 crew members and nine passangers were on board, all rescued by a Greek ship that was sailing nearby.

For U.S. Democrats, more to come after Super Tuesday
2008-02-07 06:58:00
By Jeff Mason CHICAGO (Reuters) - This may take a while. That was the message for Democrats after Tuesday 's multi-state nominating contest -- once expected to anoint a candidate for the U.S. presidential election -- ended up in a virtual tie between rivals Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. After scrambling to visit some 22 states in less than two weeks, the candidates -- historic because of her gender and his race -- now face a slew of new state contests in what is likely to be a prolonged fight to win their party's nomination. "It's going to be a bloodbath," said John Geer, professor of political science at Vanderbilt University in Nashville. Bloody or not, the protracted battle means both presidential hopefuls have more time to make their cases for the chance to fight the eventual Republican candidate in the November election. Obama, an Illinois senator who has repeatedly argued that Clinton's fame as the wife of former President Bill Clinton gives her an...

Indonesian magazine sorry for Suharto's Last Supper cover
2008-02-07 06:58:00
JAKARTA (Reuters) - A leading Indonesian magazine has apologised to Christians for depicting former President Suharto and his family in an image parodying Leonardo Da Vinci's Last Supper in the cover of its latest edition. Weekly magazine Tempo's cover showed a sketch of Suharto, who died at 86 last month, sitting at a table surrounded by his children in a parody of the last meal Jesus had with his disciples as depicted in Da Vinci's painting. Christian activists visited Tempo's building on Tuesday to protest the cover which they said compared Suharto to Jesus. "For anything unseemly related to the publication of the cover, I, on behalf of the Tempo group, apologise," the magazine's chief editor, Toriq Hadad, said in a statement run on its Web site, www.tempointeraktif.com. He said the image, used to illustrate a cover story titled "After He is Gone," was inspired by Da Vinci's painting and was not intended to refer to a biblical event. Ha said t...

France sends defence minister to Chad to meet Deby
2008-02-07 06:58:00
By Moumine Ngarmbassa and Emmanuel Braun N'DJAMEMA (Reuters) - France 's defence minister flew to Chad on Wednesday in a show of support for President Idriss Deby who survived a weekend assault on the capital N'Djamena by rebels. Herve Morin's visit came as France, which has warplanes and more than 1,000 troops stationed in its former colony, threw its weight behind Deby, who has fought off several bids by rebels to end his 18-year rule in the central African oil producer. "I can confirm that Mr Morin is in N'Djamena and will be visiting French troops and the Chadian authorities," a spokesman at the French military base in N'Djamena told Reuters. After obtaining U.N. Security Council backing for Deby's government, French President Nicolas Sarkozy said on Tuesday his country could intervene if called upon against the rebels, whom Chad says are backed by neighbour Sudan. Khartoum denies this. In Paris, a Defence Ministry source said Morin would be in Chad "fo...

Landslide kills 7 on Indonesia's Java
2008-02-07 06:58:00
JAKARTA (Reuters) - A landslide triggered by heavy rain has killed seven people in Indonesia 's Central Java province, a health official said on Wednesday. A torrent of mud slammed into houses in Sindangwangi village on the northern coast of Java island on Tuesday evening, burying seven people, said Rustam Pakaya, head of the health ministry's crisis centre. Rescuers managed to unearth their bodies early on Wednesday, he said. One person was injured. Indonesia suffers heavy flooding and landslides every rainy season. Five people have died and 100,000 been displaced in the capital Jakarta since Friday because of rain and floods, Pakaya said. The flooding in Jakarta also brought the city to a standstill and forced the closure of the main airport for several hours.
Rat statues, Jesus icons for Manila's Chinese
2008-02-07 06:58:00
By Manny Mogato MANILA (Reuters Life!) - With red lanterns and Lunar New Year banners swinging in the breeze, Manila 's bustling Chinatown looks like any other welcoming the Year of the Rat -- except for the Virgin Mary and child Jesus icons. Jewellery store owner Tammy Chua is one of hundreds who start the day with a prayer at a Roman Catholic church in Chinatown, before hurrying back to open her small shop. "I don't see any conflict in me being a Catholic and doing what we Chinese practice during Lunar New Year," Chua said. The 75-year-old has set up a stall of Lunar New Year sticky rice cakes, and expects brisk business over the next few days, as one million ethnic Chinese in the Philippine capital celebrate the Lunar New Year with fireworks, dragon dances and feasting. Like most businesses in the area, Chua's shop prominently displays figures of rats in various shapes and colours, to signify the coming year. But an icon of the child Jesus Christ, Santo Nino ...

Baghdad security walls curb violence, at a cost
2008-02-07 06:58:00
By Waleed Ibrahim BAGHDAD (Reuters) - To some Iraqis they are the reason it is safe to shop. To others they are like big jails. Nothing symbolises the year-long security offensive in Baghdad more vividly than the thousands of tonnes of concrete walls that have been erected around dozens of markets, public places and even entire neighbourhoods. But as violence has fallen in the capital, some Iraqis have begun debating whether the 12-foot high walls should come down. Does the inconvenience and ugliness of the grey barriers outweigh the protection and peace of mind they provide? Most seem to want the walls to remain at markets and even be strengthened -- especially after two female bombers killed 99 people at pet markets last Friday in attacks blamed on al Qaeda. "I don't mind having the walls for years if they keep the market secure. Many of my neighbours and relatives are still in hospital because of explosions," said Um Haitham, a woman in her 60s as she shopped i...

Myanmar fishermen rescued after 3 months in sea

BHUBANESWAR, India (Reuters) - Three Myanmar fishermen who say they spent nearly three months adrift at sea in a raft after their boat was destroyed in a cyclone were rescued off the east Indian coast on Wednesday, police said. Local fishermen spotted the trio drifting aimlessly near the resort town of Gopalpur in a bamboo raft, Siba Sankar Mohapatra, a senior police officer said. "They lived on turtles and fishes for food after they were separated from three other groups in the sea," Mohapatra said after questioning the trio. Cyclone Sidr smashed into the coast of southern Bangladesh on Nov. 15 with 250 kph winds that whipped up a five-meter tidal surge. At least 3,000 people died in Bangladesh under its impact. The three fishermen, who said they set sail from their country on Nov. 11 got hair cuts, food and new clothes from authorities who are planning to send them back home soon.
