Carolina Green Sense : New CFL Look: "It's the easiest thing we can do at home, to save money and help save the planet. The next time a light bulb burns out, replace it with an energy-efficient CFL bulb.A compact fluorescent lamp (CFL) costs a bit more than a conventional bulb, between $2 and $4 in Carolina stores. But you will save money over the long run. On average, replacing a single conventional bulb with a CFL will save $30 in electricity over the life of the bulb."Link

AfricaNews - Lighting Africa through market transformation - Articles : "Viewed from space, Africa emerges as looming in an impenetrable shadow, the portrait of a continent cast in darkness satellite image reveals the sheer magnitude of a problem that affects an estimated 1.6 billion people, representing one third of the global population. The problem is particularly acute in Africa, where more than 90% of the rural population and 74% of the total population live outside grid connectivity. Consequently, the 500 million ?energy poor? are reliant on traditional forms of energy to meet their lighting needs, dominated by fuel-based sources such as kerosene, a costly and inefficient alternative that consumes 10-15% of annual household income. For the poorest families, the significantly high expenditures on kerosene for meeting their lighting needs affects their ability to pay for other day-to-day necessities, such as children?s education, family health care and nutrition."Link

Sierra Sun - Opinion : "In a recent letter to the editor, ?Harsh light? (March 24 Sierra Sun), the writer slams the Energy Independence and Security Act saying it will ?effectively ban incandescent light bulbs? and then goes on to complain about perceived (and real) issues with CFLs.Let?s first note that ?effectively ban? does not mean ?actually ban.? The act set an efficiency standard that is not met by today?s pathetically inefficient incandescent bulbs. There?s no language ?banning? anything and, in fact, General Electric is promising a high-efficiency incandescent (HEI) by 2010, which will meet the 2012 standards"Link

The light at the end of the tunnel « ? PullYourHeadOutOfYer ?: "has been turned off by Congress to reduce America?s carbon footprint. And as usual they have their heads up their collective ass and are trying to save us from ourselves.I heard on the news that Congress has mandated or is about to place a ban on the sale of incandescent lights by the year 2012. They are favoring ?energy-saving? compact fluorescent bulbs. These spiral like bulbs are now in stores. And if you are like me You have been shell-shocked by their huge per-bulb cost compared to cheap incandescent bulbs.Granted there are the potential dangers in incandescent bulbs themselves. You probably are not aware of it but we get exposed to heavy amounts of infrared light that?s generated by incandescent light bulbs. And it?s thought that the levels of infrared light generated by standard incandescent bulbs is actually quite toxic. It?s not yet been proven but it is believed that the infrared light from these bulbs is a ma...

Danny Seo: The Green House Effect: Eco Appliance Technology - Living on The Huffington Post: "Back in 2000, I wrote my first book Conscious Style Home about the renovation of my parents' Pennsylvania home using environmentally-friendly materials and techniques. It was one of the first eco-design books published, and looking back today, it shows. One of the projects I showcased was resurfacing a giant SubZero refrigerator using coats and coats of chalkboard paint. The outcome was cool; you could write grocery lists and messages right onto the fridge. But the eco-reasoning was outright stupid; I figured it was better to rescue an old refrigerator (this was more than 10 years old) than to replace it with a new one"Link

Response to the Mercury Debate « Challenge for Change : "I talk about compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) a lot as part of my job promoting energy efficiency and conservation. They use a quarter of the energy of incandescents, they last seven to ten times longer, they save homeowners money and they help reduce our impact on the environment. They come in all shapes and sizes, colors and intensities and a lot of people are using them these days. Most everyone I talk to about CFLs are very satisfied with their bulbs and the energy savings and want to get more. However, some people are very concerned about one aspect of CFLs: mercury. The comment below is common:What about the Mercury clean-up when they break? Floresent [sic] lamps all have mercury in them and the main problem with them is that it is a vapor? Why would you fix one so-called problem with another even greater problem? The ground water will become contaminated with this heavy metal and we will not be able to use it."Link

JamulBlog: Puzzler...: "All but one of you got the correct answer to last week's puzzler: the reason why one lighting technology is more pleasing to the eye than another is the smoothness of the intensity of light it emits over the visible spectrum. Incandescent bulbs have a very smooth spectrum curve, with the very best of them (high-temperature halogen) emitting a spectrum that closely resembles that of the sun.The two technologies that offer the best hope for energy saving (compact fluorescent and white LED) have emission spectrums that are very ?peaky?. For example, a white LED typically emits 90% or more of its light in either two or three very narrow bandwidths. If an object that is illuminated by such a lamp happens to be colored such that it doesn't match the colors emitted by the lamp, then it will appear to be a different color than it would have in sunlight (or incandescent light). If you've ever seen the peculiar way things look under low-pressure sodium street lamps ...

After Armageddon : Are You Ready for a Disaster ? (Part IV): "In a great many ways, we live safer lives today than our parents and grandparents ever did. Western civilization's empasis on science and engineering has driven incredible progress in our understanding of the world. Because our understanding of the world is imperfect, and our social systems fractious and chaotic, we still make mistakes. The result of this progress, unfortunately, is that much of Western civilization teeters precariously at the top of a technological pyramid. Remove the non-stop infusions of energy and goods, add a little natural or man-made disaster, and that balancing act rapidly devolves into chaos"Link
