Outlook for Oil: 2008 Thus Far and a Preview of Coming Attractions - Seeking Alpha: "My concern has been that at some point, shortages of oil will cause a falling-stocks, rising-oil phenomenon that will crush my oil related stocks along with the whole market. 2008 has started like that. Oil was up 6.34% as of 2/29 (per Barclays Bank Zero Cpn ETN (OIL)) but stocks were down 8.5% (in terms of the S&P 500 ETF (SPY)). For oil-related stocks, the falling stock market trumped the rising oil market, as I have expected. IYE, a broad-based oil-stock ETF, was down 3.8% for the two months while Oil Service HOLDRs ETF (OIH), an oil service stock index, was down 6.7%"Link

ScienceAlert: "In Poland in 1995, though economical in the long run, a compact fluorescent light globe (CFL) required an off-putting upfront investment of as much as US$15.00. An incandescent bulb cost just 40 cents. But under the Poland Efficient Lighting Project, OECD nations, through the Global Environment Facility (GEF),5 committed $5 million to provide an incentive to Polish CFL manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers to help bring down the upfront cost of CFLs.As a result, more than 1.6 million new compact fluorescent lights6 were installed from 1995 to 1998. This increased the uptake of globes from one in every 10 homes to one in every three homes by 1998. By 2004, around one in two homes in Poland used a CFL and the project had saved an estimated 2320 gigawatt-hours of electricity – a reduction of 2.8 million tons of CO2 emissions."Link

Eco-Justice Blog : Stamford (CT) goes green: "Stamford was one of ten municipalities selected by ICLEI –Local Governments for Sustainability as part of the New England Cities Project. The City was selected based on its successful emission reductions projects and ongoing energy savings initiatives. As a part of the 'Stamford Cool and Green 2020,' the City will substantially expand its climate saving efforts, which will ultimately make Stamford the leading environmental steward in Connecticut. There are millions of cars, boilers, and light bulbs contributing to our climate's greenhouse gas emissions. As individuals we contribute to these emissions daily, but as a community our carbon footprint becomes significant as the size and scope of our City continues to change. If each of us were to make minor changes in the way we operate daily, the positive impact on the environment would be remarkable. We ask that as you review the following tenets of the '2020' plan that you think of wa...

The Times West Virginian - Lighting up the future: "Over the past few years, many have racked their brains attempting to come up with a way to reduce greenhouse gases in Earth’s atmosphere and protect the planet’s environment.Reduced emissions from cars was one idea that is being implemented, and recycling programs have also sprung up all over the country. However, another idea set off a light bulb in many people’s heads.Power-plant emissions account for a significant amount of pollution in the atmosphere, said Hewan Tomlinson with the Environmental Protection Agency. However, many claim that the plants are a necessity because of the growing demand for electricity in the country. One solution is better light bulb efficiency."Link

Hey, you'll be off-grid by summer. Not your story? Then you're like most of us in terms of energy use, living in a regular Kansas City area house without any highfalutin green amenities.Still, like most people, you'd rather not spend more money than you must on utility bills -- or suck up more energy resources than makes good sense.Today is the second installment of FYI's Greener Living series. In the first we homed in on trash. This time: reducing home energy use.Spring is a fine time to start making changes, during an energy-use lull between winter's chill and summer's swelter."Link

Making sure your home is not an energy sink 3 (ScienceAlert): "This time, we’ll look at space heating. In Melbourne you need it, if you don’t want to be the bad guy who goes around telling everybody to put on jumpers instead of heating the house. Our house is heated by gas, and occasionally by a wood fire. Space heating, as you can imagine, is one of the big energy users and also a big CO2 producer."Link

Energy Efficient Fluorescent Light Bulbs Have a Dark Secret
2008-03-02 12:57:00
Energy Efficient Fluorescent Light Bulbs Have a Dark Secret : "Here's the latest chapter in the never-ending 'you just can't win' story. Two new reports issued by the state of Maine and the Vermont-based Mercury Policy Project indicate that those righteous, energy-efficient spiral light bulbs endorsed by green organizations can cause mercury poisoning. You have nothing to worry about while the bulbs burn, say the reports -- only if they break, when small amounts of mercury vapor can escape. The report warns that infants, pets, and pregnant women are at particular risk from exposure to the neurotoxin -- although even strapping adults might worry knowing that the researchers measured mercury levels 100 times in excess of federal guidelines for chronic exposure when they shattered 65 of the compact florescent lamps (CFLs). If the proportions hold true, that means that breaking even one bulb will expose you to more than six times the acceptable level."Link

Special Blog : Live In Color : "And although fluorescent bulbs are less expensive to use in the long run, some consumers are turned off by the cost: $3 to $10, compared with about 50 cents for regular bulbs. Meanwhile, retailers such as IKEA are setting up recycling programs in response to concerns about how to dispose of CFLs, which contain mercury and could pose a health hazard if they break and are not cleaned up properly.Such drawbacks help explain why, even though one in five bulbs sold in the USA is now a compact fluorescent, a lower percentage of American homes estimates run as low as 11% have at least one of the bulbs."Link

No problem. When you go to buy a new light bulb, if you care to spend the extra money (CFLs cost about six times as much as incandescents), you might feel good about helping the environment. Sustainability Activities at Unity College : Compact Fluorescents, savings and clean up: "This report is a collection of information provided by the Maine Department of Environmental Protection.According to the US Department of Energy, if we all switched our five most-highly used light bulbs to compact fluorescents (CFLs), we would save enough electricity to shut down 21 power plants—about 800 billion kilowatt-hours. That means a lot less carbon dioxide, mercury, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen oxides going into the air and causing problems like climate change, acid rain, ozone and contaminated fish. Ultimately the mercury in the light bulbs is far less than the mercury that would be emitted using conventional light bulbs. Not to mention the money we’d save on our monthly electric bills. Try Efficiency Maine's savings calculator to see how much you might save. And find more information about the ENERGY STAR® Residential Lighting Program."Link
