directdaily: Carrefour "Light bulbs": "Playing off the typical retial 'sale' environment, Carrefour placed flashy tags that appeared to be communicating huge savings on the purchase of compact fluorescent lamp (CFL) light bulbs. On closer inspection, customers were informed that with these efficient bulbs, the savings would be in energy. These tags were used during the Carrefour's Energy Saving Week."Link

Save energy, Save earth! Deepan?s Blog : "This web page concentrates on electricity use in households. It should, however, be noted that in moderate and cold climate zones, space heating takes up at least half of the overall energy use. Therefore, proper insulation and ventilation is the first and most important energy saving measure. It can reduce heating needs to one-third (about 50 kWh heat/m2/y) or even one tenth (less than 15 kWh heat/m2/y) of what an average house would need. Remarkably, a properly insulated house, which only needs a third of the heat to keep you warm, will not be more expensive to build. The extra investments in insulation, ventilation and high-efficiency glazing, can be offset by a smaller and cheaper heating system. An efficient house will also be healthier and more comfortable to live in - it avoids ?cold radiation? (as from windows), the differences of temperature between heated and non-heated rooms is less, and it can be more efficiently ventilated."Link

Eye of Modok While the use of renewable energy technology is laudible, let?s focus a bit more on execution: "While the finger-pointers in the West may look scornfully upon China as the biggest threat to global warming, despite that fact that many of China?s emissions are a direct result of offshoring by said finger-pointing countries in an effort sate the mindless consumerism of the local residents, who don?t want such dirty stinky polluting factories in their own back yards, especially as it wouldn?t be ?environmentally friendly?, few may be aware that from a policy standpoint, at least, China is in many ways ahead of the pack. Now if we can only work on execution?"Link

Which bulbs will light the way?
2008-02-20 18:02:00
Which bulbs will light the way?: "With the tide of legal reform in California and the nation turning against the familiar incandescent lightbulb, will criminals soon be the only ones with good lighting in their homes? Not if lighting designers, manufacturers and consumers have anything to say about it. Technology improvements, driven by a spate of regulations legislating more energy-efficient lighting, are providing a range of choice both in bulbs and in dimmer and occupancy-sensor systems. Traditional lighting manufacturers like GE, Sylvania and Philips are responding, and new manufacturers are coming into the market. This is good news for consumers looking for an alternative to the standard Edison bulb introduced in the 1880s and largely unchanged since."Link

Green Grows Up - LED Bulbs Last Longer, Use Less Energy, and Emit Less CO2
2008-02-20 18:01:00
Green Grows Up - LED Bulbs Last Longer, Use Less Energy , and Emit Less CO2 Than CFL Bulbs: "When choosing the greenest option for lighting your home or office, look to the new light emitting diode (LED) light bulbs as the next generation green alternative. Currently, compact fluorescent bulbs (CFL) get attention as a lower-energy bulb than traditional incandescent bulbs, and, according to the Wall Street Journal, there has been a 300% increase in sales of CFLs over the past two years. However, new LED bulbs are on the rise as the green bulbs of the future and the replacement for CFLs."Link

Cleantech Blog : Can We Actually Reduce Energy Usage without Hurting GDP?: "I was thinking today, in cleantech we often talk a lot about energy efficiency. Californians often cite that this state has grown its economy for the last 20 years without a significant increase in energy usage per capita, compared to the rest of the country, where GDP per capita goes up, and energy usage goes up just as much. But of course, California has lost much of its manufacturing sector over that same 20 year period, too. Perhaps no coincidence?"Link

The John Tesh Blog : Will New Light Bulbs End Up Being a Headache ?: "Have you heard the news about the end of the light bulb? The incandescent light bulb will be phased off the U.S. market starting in 2012.In its place will be a new bulb -a compact fluorescent (CFL) that will reduce electricity costs. According to Fast Company, if each of the 110 million homes in America replaced one 60-watt bulb with a CFL bulb, enough energy would be saved to power a city of 1.5 million people."Link

Wake Up! The Sun is Shining
2008-02-15 06:50:00
Wake Up! The Sun is Shining : "And it's about time we woke up. Power from the sun is the one potential source of unlimited energy we have to replace the dwindling supplies of fossil fuels. Not that solar energy is about to take over as the province's primary source of supply for the future. Hydro and nuclear power and even coal generated electricity are still the 'biggees' and undoubtedly will continue to be for a few years to come. But it appears we are finally waking up to the potential of renewable energy to contribute to the mix. Add solar power to wind farms and conservation efforts to stem the rush to increased burning of fossil fuels or billions of dollars to be invested in new nuclear facilities."Link

LIGHT EFFECTS
2008-02-13 05:26:00
LIGHT EFFECTS: "Until recently, choosing lighting for the home often involved compromises between achieving the desired ambience and saving energy. Incandescent light bulbs provide warm illumination combined with the flexibility of dimmers. Unfortunately, these lamps are very inefficient--bad for the electric bill as well as the environment. CFLs (compact fluorescent lamps) represent a more efficient alternative, but don't always give the desired lighting effect and are often incompatible with dimming systems."Link

The Peninsula On-line: Qatar's leading English Daily

The Peninsula On-line : Qatar's leading English Daily : "Because about 80% of all lighting in the home today is still using incandescent light bulbs, the collective energy waste is very significant. With a change to energy-saving alternatives, realistic running cost savings for European consumers of EUR 5-8bn per year and an indirect CO2 reduction of 20m tons could be achieved. The case against Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs) is built largely on half-truths and innuendo. Yes, the energy-saving bulbs contain mercury, a neurotoxin responsible for a tremendous amount of human suffering over the years. And safely recycling CFLs remains far more difficult than it should be. But these facts don't justify sticking with inefficient incandescent technology that has barely changed since the invention of the tungsten filament nearly a century ago."Link

Unfortunately, fluorescents contain noxious chemicals including argon and mercury that are contaminating the environment, specifically through their accumulation in landfill waste. echarger blog updates: 51 Things We Can Do to Save the Environment : "Are corn husks better than corn for producing energy? Ethanol is the alternative fuel that could finally wean the U.S. from its expensive oil habit and in turn prevent the millions of tons of carbon emissions that go with it. The Department of Energy has doubled its 2005 commitment to funding research into biofuels—any non-petroleum fuel source, including corn, soybean, switchgrass, municipal waste and (ick) used cooking oil. Already, half of the nearly 11 billion bushels of corn produced each year is turned into ethanol, and most new cars are capable of running on E10 (10% ethanol and 90% gas)."Link
