The Telegraph - Calcutta (Kolkata ) Metro Tech options to trim civic power bill: "The civic body is turning to technology to cut down on power bills. An invention by a city-based scientist and compact fluorescent lamps (CFL) are two of the options being considered by the Calcutta Municipal Corporation (CMC) to increase the longevity of street lamps and reduce power consumption. The CMC spends over Rs 30 crore annually on street lighting. The power bill in its various offices amounts to Rs 120 crore per year.An “ignitor” — invented by Dhanonjoy Biswas, a scientist at the CTBL Electronics Regional Testing Laboratory (East) — has the potential to extend the lives of sodium vapour and metal halide lamps, thus curtailing the CMC’s expenditure on power, said H.K. Majumdar, the working chairman of the West Bengal State Council of Science and Technology.“A high-energy, high-amplitude pulse is required to switch on a light. Vincent Gioia's Blog : When God said ?Let there be light," he didn?t mean Compact Fluorescent Lamps Congress dictated that the light bulbs we now use will one day be a thing of the past; like the horse buggy, the ice box, home delivered milk and the nickel cigar. However, the difference is these were replaced with substitutes that were better and didn?t require the hazardous waste disposal unit to take them away when they broke down. With the enactment of the ?Energy Independence and Security Act,' Congress bowed to the man-made global warming industry and required Americans to replace the dependable incandescent bulbs with Compact Fluorescent Lamps (?CFLs? for short); those weird looking spiral ?light? bulbs? that often don?t fit well in your lamps and which put out less illumination, sometimes with a colorful hue not the white light of their ancestors. [The phase-out of incandescent light is to begin with the 100-watt bulb in 2012 and end in 2014 with the 40-watt.]Another major di...

Technorati: Discussion about ?Our Dim Future ? Our Dim Futurehttp://depleteduranium.wordpress.co m/ 2008/ 01/ 03/ our-dim-future/ The US and Brit governments have mandated the replacement of our incandescent bulbs by Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs). That will probably save energy, so is a Good Thing. But CFLs are awful lamps, so that?s a Bad Thing. The UK ban: On the 27 September 2007, the government announced plans to phase out the sale of incandescent light bulbs by 2011. Retailers will not replace 150 watt bulbs from January 2008, 100 watt bulbs from January 2009, 40 watt bulbs in 2010, and all remaining high power bulbs by 2011. These plans are voluntary? This agreement between vendors is a cartel - common in the collectivist UK.Link

This is the development of vacuum techniques, of particular glasses, the purificationof gases, the refinement of metals, the elaboration of fluorescent substances, and other countlessengineering feats that allowed the making and improvement of all lamps we depend on today. Of course, many of these breakthroughs were precisely driven by the need for better light sources, having longerlifetimes, higher efficienc...
Lighting: Compact Fluorescent Lamps
2008-02-04 07:58:00
Lighting: Compact Fluorescent Lamps Incandescent light bulbs have been around since the late 1800s and are still very popular. The basic idea behind incandescent bulbs is simple. Electricity runs through a filament making it very hot. The filament glows because of the high temperature ? it incandesces. The problem with incandescent light bulbs is that the heat wastes a lot of electricity. About 95 percent of the energy consumed by an incandescent bulb is converted to heat, while only five percent makes useful light.Incandescent bulbs are therefore very inefficient, producing only about 15 lumens per watt of input power. [A lumen is a unit measure of light energy.]Compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) use a completely different method to produce light. Inside the lamp are electrodes and a gas containing argon and mercury vapor. A stream of electrons flows through the ionized gas from one electrode to the other. These electrons collide with the mercury atoms and excite them.As the mercury a...

In defense of incandescent light. - By Ron Rosenbaum - Slate Magazine : "Let us now praise incandescence—and, while we're at it, let's damn fluorescence.Last year a woman compiling a unique kind of anthology asked me for a contribution. She was getting a number of writers to do essays about one word, their single favorite word.An intriguing assignment. But months went by, and whenever I thought of it I just couldn't make up my mind. I couldn't commit myself to a single word (spare me the psychologizing, please). I missed the deadline."Link

Question Technology: Defending Incandescent Bulbs
2008-02-03 02:40:00
Question Technology : Defending Incandescent Bulbs : "Ron Rosenbaum has an article in Slate about what we lose when we outlaw incandescent bulbs in favor of compact fluorescents. He's a bit too nostalgic for my taste, but he does raise some important points. Excerpt:Yes, the idiots in Congress, too torpid and ineffectual to pass a health-care bill for children, have busy-bodied themselves in a bumbling way with the way you light up your world. In December, they passed legislation that will, in practice, outlaw incandescent bulbs because they won't be able to meet the new law's strict energy-efficiency standards. The result: Between 2012 and 2014, incandescent bulbs will be driven from the market. Replaced by the ugly plasticine Dairy Queen swirl of compact fluorescent lights. From a purely environmental perspective, this move is shortsighted. CFLs do use less energy, which is good. But they also often contain mercury, one of the most damaging—and lasting—environmental toxins. No...

Moneyweb - News - ANC urges South Africans to save electricity now, for our future: "The most effective way of tackling the energy crisis in the weeks and months ahead is for the whole country to use electricity more efficiently. Until new electricity generating capacity becomes operational, South Africa will need to use less electricity to prevent the load shedding that has affected most parts of the country in recent weeks. The ANC this week called on all South Africans to work together in implementing the measures proposed by government as part of the National Electricity Emergency Programme. Parliament held a joint sitting this week to debate the causes of the current situation and the best way of addressing it. Government also provided more details of its plan, particularly steps that could be taken by households to immediately reduce the amount of electricity the used."Link

Going green shouldnt be complicated - Environmental Awareness - Helium - by Laura Lee Winger: "'It's not easy being green,' sings Kermit the Frog. He may be right, as of today, but eco-friendly technologies are making it easier and cheaper to be green. Since automotive emissions are blamed for a bulk of the green house gases leading to global warming, alternative fuels that burn cleaner and electric cars are being developed and will drastically reduce the dependence on fossil fuels. In the home, Compact Fluorescent Lights, or CFL's, are replacing regular incandescent light bulbs, Energy Star appliances are encouraged by tax incentives, and dual flush toilets are reducing water usage. Retail stores are turning off half their lights during the day. More extreme, small housing units called earthships are being built that are almost completely self-sustaining. No matter what your position on the global warming debate is, it can be agreed upon that damaging the environment is not goo...

PureSpectrum Introducing the First Dimmer Designed for CFL Bulbs : "One of the most consistently damning complaints about Compact Fluorescent Light (CFL) bulbs among consumers has been that the bulbs cannot be dimmed, but engineers from PureSpectrum, Inc. (PINKSHEETS: PSPM) have developed a solution that will allow CFL bulbs to be dimmed just like incandescent bulbs. As part of its market driven development model, PureSpectrum, Inc. engineered a fully dimmable CFL bulb and the first ever dimming device specifically engineered to operate a fully dimmable CFL bulb. The two-wire dimmer was recently used in independent testing conducted on PureSpectrum's dimmable CFL prototype and dimmable CFL bulbs made by GE and MaxLite.Using the PureSpectrum dimming device enabled PureSpectrum's dimmable CFL to be dimmed in linear progression from 100 percent of perceived light output down to five percent. CFL Pricing, Quality , Technology Will Continue to Improve in 2008 :: Hotel ResourceSomewhere between 60 percent to 70 percent of U.S. hotels now use compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs), one lodging industry expert estimates. There is no doubt that number is going to grow.On December 18, President Bush signed the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007. Within that bill, there is a call for the phaseout, beginning in 2012, of the incandescent bulb. It is only a matter of time before CFLs totally replace the technology invented by Thomas Edison. Given the inevitability of CFLs, where do they stand today in regard to pricing? Quality? Technology? What can hoteliers expect in 2008?'What is really new is that prices are plummeting,' says Dan Bornholdt, president of Upland, Calif.-based Green Suites International, a distributor of TCP SpringLamps. 'Prices for SpringLamps are under $3 per bulb now. Three years ago, they were $6 or $7.'From a quality standpoint, CFLs have been highly ...

The Wesleyan Argus - Ask a Professor: Dana Royer, Earth and Environmental ScienceQuestion: What can we personally do to help alleviate global warming and other environmental problems?Answer: In the United States, automobiles, power plants and industry each contribute about a third of the total human-caused emissions of carbon dioxide. These are the areas that we as individuals should focus on to reduce our collective carbon footprint. Most of us know how to reduce carbon emissions related to transportation: drive fuel-efficient cars and drive less often (or use public transportation). The sources of fuel for power plants vary greatly from region to region, so it is important to learn the sources for your home region. Here in Connecticut, about 40 percent of our electricity comes from the combustion of fossil fuels. There are many ways to cut electricity use with energy-efficient appliances: I cut my home?s electricity bill by about 25 percent simply by switching all bulbs to the com...
