Using the News Media to Learn Spanish Better
2008-01-27 06:29:00
For most people, news is a part of life. They listen to the evening news to get the upcoming weather or to find out what is going on in their area that day. They buy newspapers to get a handle on local politics. You can also use the news media to learn Spanish better. One way to get news to learn Spanish better is to subscribe to a Spanish language newspaper. You can get the information on how to do that through your local library. They will have the contact information for the newspapers, so that all you have to do is get in touch with them and place your order. Once you get the paper, you can try reading the articles. You might have problems at first, but continue on. Use a translation dictionary. Whenever possible, find out about the story through other sources as well. See if what you understand as you try to learn Spanish matches what you find out in your own language. Sometimes, the perspective is different, causing a discrepancy between the two stories. This only...

Mixing Up languages
2008-01-24 19:21:00
It happens often when someone is bilingual or multilingual to mix up languages. It happens to me when I have to speak a lot of languages one after another in a very short period of time. For example, if I speak to someone in English, and someone comes and don't speak English, I have to speak with him in his language, then, someone else comes and I have to speak with him in another language ... in a short period of time, I have spoken three different languages. When I get back to the first person (who speaks English), I got confused ... then, I speak Spanish, French or whatever and I mix up languages. It takes a few minutes before I realize that I English is the language that I have to speak.I only mix up languages in this kind of situations ... when my mind is solicited (too much) to use a lot of languages simultaneously ... when the mental translation is done rapidly. It happens to me also, when I am stressed, angry, and voluntarily I don't bother to use the proper language but my n...

Certified translator in the US?
2007-12-31 05:20:00
In the US, there is not currently a certification required to be a translator or interpreter. In the US, a translator does not need to be ?certified? in order to provide a ?certified translation. If you want a certified translation, you can get your statement translated and signed by a translator and see a Notary Public to notarize it. Many translators and interpreters start their business by submitting their resumes and sample of their work to several employment agencies, marketing their business in different ways in order to be known and to build a list of clients. Some translators have degree in foreign languages, some have certification, others have overseas work experiences ... Translator s and interpreters have different backgrounds, different experiences, different paths ...In America, contrary to some other countries, you don't have to be certified in order to be a translator and an interpreter. There are many excellent, experienced translators who are not accredited or certi...

How to set your translation rates by using objective information
2007-12-29 19:33:00
Copyright 2007 by Corinne McKay Setting your translation rates Possibly the most anxiety-provoking aspect of launching your translation business is deciding how much to charge. Charge too much and you'll be priced out of the market; charge too little and you'll be working overtime just to make ends meet. The easiest way to remove the anxiety from this decision is to gather some objective data such as how much money you would like to make, and how much it will cost you to run your business. As we've discussed before, every language combination and specialization has a range of rates; for example, translators of Asian languages into English will almost invariably earn more than translators of European languages. In addition, how much you need to charge depends on your cost of living. An English to Spanish translator living in rural Mexico can afford to work for much less money than his or her colleague who lives in Manhattan. Some translators get very angry about these global out...

How to find your first translation clients?
2007-12-28 20:55:00
Copyright 2006 by Corinne McKay.Where to begin? I receive a lot of inquiries from people who would like to become translators, and most of these e-mails have something to do with finding those first few elusive translation clients. If you ask 100 translators how they got started in the business, you'll probably get at least 50 different answers. Some picked up the phone and started cold-calling, some turned an old business connection into a client, some volunteered, some went back to school, some were just in the right place at the right time. Following are some tips on how to break into the translation industry, depending on your interests and level of experience. As a freelance translator, your two basic categories of clients are translation agencies, companies that serve as a middleman between an end client and various freelance translators, and direct clients, where you work directly for the translation buyer with no middleman involved. Each of these approaches has its benefi...

Getting Started as a Freelance Translator
2007-12-21 20:20:00
by Corinne McKayBackgroundI became a translator via a series of happy accidents. After taking French in school since seventh grade, I studied abroad at the University of Grenoble, France, for my junior year of college. There, a professor recommended me for a part-time job as a trainee translator at the University's graduate school of business. This ended up involving work on an international marketing textbook that was subsequently published by Prentice-Hall. Back in the U.S., I taught high school French for 8 years, did a few translations on the side when people asked me, and earned an M.A. in French from Boston College. After relocating to Colorado and having a child, I wanted to find a career that would allow me to use French and work from home, so I decided to try to make a go as a professional translator. Several years later, I'm certified by the American Translator s Association and happily employed by a growing list of regular clients. I hope that these tips will be helpful ...

Reasons to Learn Spanish
2007-12-16 06:34:00
It might be a good time to learn Spanish . You may never have thought of learning another language before. Many people go their whole lives without knowing more than one language. Yet, others like the challenge. They find plenty of reasons to learn Spanish. If you travel to a Spanish-speaking country, it helps to know the language. When you learn Spanish before you go, you can be ready to take care of all your basic needs while staying at your destination. You will know how to ask for directions and understand the answers. You can be the first of your group to figure out the menu at a foreign restaurant and help the others to order. If you learn Spanish, your trip will be pleasurable instead of frustrating. This is because you can communicate well enough to handle situations as they come up. Another reason to learn Spanish is to be able to speak to others in this country. For example, a Spanish speaking person might be sitting next to you at a sporting event. If you don...

The power of Attitude: Your attitude determines your altitude.
2007-12-11 20:32:00
I am learning a lot from observing people. I have always been fascinating by bilingualism and multilingualism ... In history, we have so many polyglots, hyperpolyglots ... people who have mastered so many languages like Uku Masing (1909?1985)who was fluent in 65 languages, Harold Williams (1876?1928)in 58, Ziad Fazah (1954? )who can reads and understands 58 languages. How did the hyperpolyglots from the last century were able to speak so many languages, whereas they didn't have all the methods and the technology that we have now. Where I come from, I remember having a conversation with a Chinese girl. I was so fascinated by the good quality of her French, she had been in my country for only 3 months and she was able to handle a conversation with me. At a conscious level, I just wanted to have a conversation with her but at a subconscious level, I guess, I tried to have some clues about languages acquisitions ... know how well she understood French and how fluent she was, then she h...

How to improve your writing skills
2007-12-01 05:08:00
One of the best way to improve your writing skills in your target language is to improve your reading. Reading improves not only your vocabulary but also your grammar, your spelling and your writing. If you don't like to read, read some topics in your target language that you are familiar with in your native language. For example if you like baseball and you know the terminology in your target language, reading about baseball in your target language will be more enjoyable and will make your reading experiences easier. Now, you have to practice your writing skills. My suggestion is start a diary. You don't have to write long texts if you are not familiar with writing. Start by writing what you want in the target language ... it doesn't have to be fancy ... just write what is in your mind and try to do it everyday. Create a routine to remain self-disciplined ... schedule a moment for that, maybe at the end of your day, before going to bed will be the best time for you.Take some baby s...

The Power of Social Language Networking
2007-11-24 02:48:00
I read a book of Robert Allen where he told this little story:A wise martial arts Master was ready to pass the mantle of authority of his organization to his number one student. The Master prepared a final test. He asked his student to move a large granite rock from one location toanother before sunset. He told the student to use all of his power to accomplish the feat. The student tried and tried but could barely budge the rock. Just as he was about to give up the master said, ?Use all your power?. Have you considered using a lever? In near contempt the student responded, ?I didn?t know I could use a lever.? The student hurried and found a strong pole and began moving the rock. However, time was running out and he realized he couldn?t accomplish the feat in time. In near despair he sat down. The master quietly asked, ?Have you used all of your power? The student cried, ?Yes, I?m physically drained, mentally perplexed, and spiritually empty. I have no more power?. ?Oh no,? said the ma...
