Shahid Kabir - the unsung poet from Nagpur
2008-05-05 11:52:00
Today, I received a message on the blog from a gentleman called Sameer Kabir - who talked about Shahid Kabir. A poet from Nagpur - whose ghazals have been sung by leading singers from across the subcontinent - including names like Jagjit and Chitra Singh, Lata Mangeshkar, Chandan das, Hariharan, Ghulam Farid Sabri, Aziz Nazan, Salman Alvi, Rais Khan, Munni Begum, Udit Narayan and Pankaj Udaas to name a few. Sadly, though I have heard his famous ghazals - Uski gali me phir muhey ek baar le chalo and thukraao ab ki pyaar karo - I had no idea that the writer was from Nagpur. Shahid Kabir was born on 1st May, 1932 in Nagpur in India. His contribution to the world of Urdu poetry took many forms. In 1957 he was the screenwriter for the drama “MIRZA GHALIB” presented in the Fine Arts Drama Competition at Rastrapati Bhawan, New Delhi. He was an active writer since 1952, writing articles, short stories and ghazals for most leading periodicals of India. He gained recognition as a ...

So which IPL Team would people from Nagpur back?
2008-02-21 10:57:00
The whole Indian Premier League cricket (IPL) hype baffles me. Billions of dollars have been put in. For what? I have a feeling that the managers have thoroughly goofed up. They say it will be city vs. city matches that will see high intensity, high quality cricket. Fantastic! So let me try to work it out. ...

Nagpur University?s Sexy Syllabus For BBA Students
2008-02-11 19:35:00
A BBA (Bachelor of Business Administration) student sends me a message about how awful their syllabus creators from Nagpur University are. She points out specifically to the syllabi created for the subject “Service Sector Management” which they have in their Final Year. And what she discovers in pretty interesting. Among the topics to be covered, as in ...

Nagpur?s restaurants: Yummy and the yuck.
2008-02-09 13:01:00
I must admit I am not much into dining out. Because I am more the daal-roti-subzee kinds. But occasionally, thanks to demands of a social life, I am forced to drop into these restaurants and eateries whenever I am in Nagpur . And I find these joints ranging from absolutely wonderful to ridiculously tasteless. My choice of ...

The Nagpur Railway Station - 1930s
2008-02-06 07:08:00
Here is a rare pic I found of the Nagpur Railway station platform, back in the 1930s. It was probably part of the Great Indian Peninsular Railways then. The architecture is pretty similar to stations in Britian at that time. Things have of course changed quite a bit over the years. But the station platforms ...

The Nagpur Filmmaker - Raju Hirani?s journey from lousy Hitavada ads to the
2008-02-05 18:08:00
It was about 10 years ago when I landed up at the annual Advertising Awards ceremony organized by the Hitavada. The awards were a farce - the whole setup was to give the advertising agencies in Nagpur a little publicity, a bit of a thank you - and of course free drinks. I don’t know ...

2008-02-04 05:45:00
Here is a wonderful, rare and historic collection photographs about Nagpur . these from from the British Libraray and the Archaeological Survey of India Collections. The problem with these overrated Nagpur Media-wallahs
2008-02-03 22:34:00
A few weeks ago I had written a small post about photographs about Nagpur . I liked a certain amateur photographer?s work and I had wrote that his work was better than other establish, fulltime photographers. It was my personal opinion. Period. It was just as saying, I like X over Y. Or just as I prefer ...

The finest fireworks display in India ? near Nagpur
2007-11-12 07:01:00
Surprisingly, perhaps what is the biggest annual fireworks display in the country, a couple of hours away from Nagpur is hardly ever mentioned. Every year, just after Diwali, Ordnance Factory Chanda, just about 125 km south of Nagpur hosts the biggest fireworks display that I have ever heard or seen of. This year it is ...

Nagpur warms up to Om Shanti Om. Saawariya takes the backseat.
2007-11-10 05:57:00
Well, it is just one day after the release. But it seems Nagpur prefers Om Shanti Om to Saawariya . I decided to take a trip to the Inox multiplex in Wardhaman Nagar for the 10 p.m. show of OSO bang on Diwali night. And being Diwali night, I expected a deserted auditorium. The streets were ...

Nagpur Photos: The Finest Collection
2007-11-08 08:38:00
Surprisingly, the finest collection of photos on Nagpur doesn?t come from a professional photographer ? but comes from an amateur photographer called Subodh Sathe. Okay, he?s a personal friend of mine, but he is a whole load of talent. And he does a lot more than just photography. More about him later. Subodh has put together, what ...

Nagpur ? Swept away by the FM Radio Waves
2007-11-08 07:34:00
Last month, airwaves in Nagpur suddenly erupted. Three new FM stations were launched simultaneously. These included the Times Group backed Radio Mirchi (98.3 MHz), Dainik Bhaskar?s MyFM (94.3 MHz) and RadioCity (91.1 Mhz). In all these launches, the ages old Vividh Bharti programming continues to remain unchanged. Suddenly everything in Nagpur seems to be a lot ...

Hello Nagpur!
2007-11-07 18:32:00
Fine, here we go. Here’s an exclusive blog dedicated to Nagpur . Nevermind if you are in Borgaon or Oregon. Dharampeth or Detroit. This space should help you keep connected to the city. This blog isn’t going to be a strictly news site. We have enough of the Hitavada CityLine anyway. This is going to be a ...
