How to Organize a Block Party with Ease
2007-08-27 20:06:00
A few weeks ago, I decided to organize a block party. It was my first stab at such an endeavor, and it was quite a challenge, to say the least. I wanted to invite 16 families from the block, but then I felt bad leaving out the rest, so I decided to make a public invitation to the 40ish families on the block (it might sound crazy, but we really are a friendly community). My idea was to organize a block party barbecue, in which everyone would bring something and both grownups and children would enjoy time together without having to travel too far. It turned out to be a wonderful day, and I’m hopeful that we’ll turn it into an annual event. But, I definitely would have benefited from having a few tips about how to organize a block party; so now that I’m a bit more experienced, I’d like to share some ideas with you. 1- Get Help! One of the first blunders I made when planning the party was failing to organize an efficient team to make the party. I enlisted one neighbor to h...

The Draw of Drawer Organizers- Organize Your Drawers Today!
2007-08-19 07:56:00
Does it ever happen that you’re looking for a baby spoon (or a measuring spoon, or the egg separater, or anything else), and you just can’t find it even though you are certain that you returned it to the drawer? It’s happened to me. Repeatedly. So I decided to take action. I purchased drawer organizers (aka drawer dividers) to keep my drawers organized (imagine that!), and my life has not been the same since. Draw er organizers are, perhaps, one of the most logical inventions of all times. They keep things neat and orderly in your drawers and make it easy to find things in a hurry. That is, assuming you take a few seconds to put things in their right place- which, I might add, is not all that difficult. Drawer organizers come in a myriad of shapes and sizes, and can even be custom-made to fit an odd-sized or odd-shaped drawer. Many standard drawer organizers can be cut down to fit the exact size of your drawer, so that it fits in comfortably and maximizes your drawer sp...

Lots of Car Games for Kids- How to Travel with Sanity
2007-08-12 09:31:00
My family is planning on doing a 2 week car trip this summer, down the California coast. And when I say “my family,” I mean my parents, my grandparents, my children, my sister and her children…lots of people of all ages, squished into a few minivans for extended periods of time. Although I’m excited about seeing new places, I must admit I’m a bit nervous about all that time spent in the car. But I’m hoping (and praying) that my fear of the unknown will prove unfounded, and that my kids will act like angels during the drive. To help make this possible, I’m planning lots of car games for kids. Needless to say, in the course of my research for finding lots of car games for kids, I found many that were too mature for my girls (I don’t expect 3 and 2 year olds to be playing Hangman). Nevertheless, there were lots of car games for kids that I found that will hopefully provide hours of entertainment, and that (luckily) don’t cost too much money (if any). 1- Create a...

How to Make a Child’s Bedroom Fun with Cute Cabinet Knobs & Handles
2007-08-05 14:21:00
When designing my daughters’ room in our new home, I wanted to find a look that would be great for young children and provide fun and class in the room through their high school years. I’m sure I’m not alone in being wary of princess-themed rooms that will get boring over time and demand redecorating before my daughters start first grade. Instead of choosing a flashy design, I decided to look into adding subtle splashes of whimsical detail with cute cabinet knobs and handles. Adding cute cabinet knobs and handles is a great way to turn an ordinary dresser into a fun piece of furniture, and to let your child express his or her interests. Whether your child enjoys animals, food, or sports, you can find adorable cabinet hardware that will match his hobbies. For a different, but uniform look, consider installing one type of cabinet knob or pull on every door and drawer. For a more whimsical look, mix and match your cabinet hardware. One of my favorite designs, for example, i...

Summer Organizing Tips- Enjoy Your Summer without Working Too Hard!
2007-07-29 09:20:00
There’s something about a perfect summer day that can make even the most focused adult want to frolic in the fields. But frolicking can easily get pushed aside by the usual culprits- a messy house, a pile of laundry, bills that need to be paid. It is essential to realize, however, that by legalizing 3 built-in vacation days into the summer, our founding fathers were “requiring” us, as American citizens, to enjoy the summer. I’d consider that an inalienable right, wouldn’t you? With these time-saving summer organizing tips you can learn how to enjoy the summer- not just on Memorial Day, July 4th and Labor Day, but throughout the entire summer season. One way to ensure that you will enjoy your summer is to plan ahead. Plan one day (or several evenings) to do your seasonal cleaning and make sure that everything is in order. Change your closets over to your summer wardrobe, dust behind the china closet, replace the winter carpet with the summer rug, etc. If necessary, h...

Household Tips Before You Go On Vacation
2007-07-22 10:16:00
Whether you’re traveling for a day or a month, summer trips can be the most exciting- and stressful part of the year. There’s so much planning, packing and organizing that a trip requires. And yet, while you’re working so hard to find suitable accommodations, meals and activities, it’s easy to forget about caring properly for your home while you’re away. Review these household tips before you go on vacation, to make sure that you return to the tidy home you left behind. 1- Clean out the fridge- It’s never fun to find that your macaroni has sprouted mold. It’s even less fun when the mold is a month old. If you are leaving for more than a day or two, make sure to empty the refrigerator of all perishables, especially any dairy products that will smell fierce, in addition to looking awful. 2- Cover the furniture- This is a tip that I learned from my grandmother, who travels frequently for extended periods of time. Covering the furniture prevents it from getting dusty...

How to be the Host with the Most
2007-07-15 10:32:00
Now that the summer is here, your friends and family likely have more time to come and visit- and stay for an extended period of time. I know this holds true for me- in the next month, I will be hosting my grandparents, childhood friend, my in-laws, and my sister with her 3 children. Not that I mind, of course- I knew when I moved far away from my loved ones that those who were brave enough to make the journey would require beds, food, and a lot of TLC. That being said, hosting guests can be an overwhelming prospect for many people- myself included…which is why it’s helpful to have a strategy for dealing with your guests and making sure that they (and you) are comfortable at all times. One easy way to ensure the comfort of your guests is to provide them with as much privacy as possible. In our house, the guest room is upstairs, while our family sleeps downstairs, thus giving the guests their own space and keeping them as far away from our (potentially) screaming babies as po...

Bathroom Cabinet Knobs & Pulls for Kids- Fun for Everyone!
2007-07-08 08:33:00
Most parents consider themselves lucky when their children have their own bathroom. I know I do. My kids’ bathroom is stocked with Sesame Street towels and the bathtub is overcrowded with toys. The bathtub is also constantly covered in the girls’ artwork, made possible by bathtub crayons. It’s wonderful for them, but I seldom find time to color while I’m in the shower. I am only too happy to let the girls have their own bathroom, and to let it look like a kids’ bathroom. Having a child-friendly bathroom makes them excited to brush their teeth or get into the bath. However, a child-friendly bathroom doesn’t have to be a garish space that looks like it was designed by your child. With bathroom cabinet knobs and pulls for kids, a bathroom can be fit for children and attractive for anyone who enters it. Bathroom cabinet knobs and pulls are available in infinite styles and finishes. Many are cute, fanciful and perfect for a kids’ bathroom. My daughters’ bathroom...

Don’t Leave Home Without It: How to Pack When You’re Taking the Kids
2007-07-01 09:17:00
It’s happened again: you’ve packed the lunches, thrown in the diapers, remembered the sunscreen and grabbed your cell phone. You successfully squish the kids in the car, drive 45 minutes to the zoo, and get on line. But wait….where’s your wallet? Oh, right- at home on the counter, where you put it right next to the lunches so you wouldn’t forget it. And then something went horribly wrong. Traveling with kids can make most parents get a little bit frazzled. Often, even before you leave the house, the kids are asking “are we there yet?”, pulling at your arm, nagging each other or demanding this, that or the other thing. Under these circumstances, it’s reasonable that someone would forget something at home- but that doesn’t make it less frustrating. Here are some tips that can help make any family outing a bit easier and hopefully a lot more enjoyable. Print out this list of items that you may need on a trip, and leave copies in your diaper bag, beach bag, purs...

Cake Ideas for Fourth of July Events
2007-06-24 09:12:00
I can’t think of anyone I know who doesn’t like cake. It’s sad, but true. Cake is a serious danger for me, as I much prefer baked goods to chocolate or candy- and no, baked apples are not what I mean by baked goods. As July 4th approaches, I thought it wise to offer cake ideas for Fourth of July events- things that will look pretty, taste fabulous, and for those a bit more health conscious than I, even a “healthy” cake. July 4th is about enjoying the day off and celebrating America’s independence and the freedoms that come with it (especially, of course, the freedom to eat cake!). For this reason, it’s important that all cake ideas for Fourth of July gatherings be easy to make- so you can enjoy the day outdoors, and not in the kitchen. The easiest idea then, would be to make a nice, fluffy white Duncan Hines cake, and frost it in white with red and blue sprinkles or candies. Take care to add the sprinkles or candy as close to serving time as possible, as the color...

Drawer or Closet Organizers- For Seasonal Changeovers and Year-Round Use
2007-06-17 08:58:00
I don’t know too many people who enjoy changing over their closets from winter clothing to summer clothing. To me, it always seems that the minute the sweaters are out a cold front blows in, and the minute the pants are replaced with shorts the rain kicks up again. And yet, while we can’t control the weather, there are things that we can do to help make the seasonal changeover a little more comfortable. Unlike most people who have to suffer through the said changeover twice a year, there are those lucky ones of us who get to do it four times (and maybe more). I for one, am one of those people: being pregnant does that to you. I changed over from summer clothing to summer maternity, then from summer maternity to winter maternity, and from winter maternity back to regular maternity when the baby was born. And let me tell you something- the process was made entirely easier because everything was labeled and I could just unload one shelf and replace it with the clothing from...

How to Find Time For the Outdoors
2007-06-10 09:38:00
Let’s face it, life is busy. There’s always something that needs to be done, and in the off chance that nothing needs to get done, there’s always relaxing to catch up on. Which, in itself, is something that definitely needs to get done. One of the things that often gets neglected in the summer months is spending enough time outside. To remedy this problem, I’ve devised a list of ideas that will let you get to see the sun- and perhaps even to enjoy the summer while you’re outdoors. 1- Work in the garden (and get the kids to help!) I’ve recently discovered the joys of gardening. And I use the phrase ‘gardening’ very liberally, since I actually mean ‘pulling up the weeds from the backyard that has not yet enjoyed the presence of grass.’ It’s a productive type of physical exertion and it gives me a great excuse to get outside. My husband lovingly planted trees in the yard (another good excuse to spend time outdoors), and has trained the girls how to water th...

Decorative Shelving- Not Just for Decoration
2007-06-03 09:37:00
Without a doubt, the kitchen is one of the most functional rooms in the house. It is the hub for all cooking, washing dishes and food storage, among other activities. In order to continue cooking (and thus having dishes to wash), it is essential to keep a well-stocked pantry, which, in itself, is not an easy task. It requires an intimate knowledge of your family’s food preferences (does one child prefer spaghetti but the other ONLY eats macaroni?), advance planning (keeping track of which staples are running low and making sure you always have food on hand for surprise guests or other emergencies), and a sufficient amount of storage space. Kitchen storage space always feels like it’s at a premium; after using a good portion of it for dishes, glasses, cutlery and appliances, there often seems to be little left for food items. Whatever food storage space does remain gets easily overcrowded, disorganized and sloppy, in an effort to fill it with as much as possible. In addit...

Delicious Frozen Food Entrees- Easy to Make, Enjoyable to Eat
2007-05-27 09:01:00
Wouldn’t it be great if we could all come home after a long day of work and find a piping hot, healthy and scrumptious meal waiting neatly on the table? Unfortunately, for the majority of us who don’t have live in chefs, this luxury may never become a reality. There are, however, things that we can do to make sure that our nights are less stressful and that our families eat well. I have already praised the virtues of menu planning and the convenience that it can bring to your life. Now I’d like to take that idea one step further, but suggesting the idea of preparing delicious frozen food entrees to be served on nights that you don’t feel like cooking- or simply don’t have the time. Preparing food in advance and freezing it is a great idea for a number of reasons. 1- It allows dinner to get to the table in a relatively short amount of time after you get home from your daily excursions. 2- It prevents you from having to run to the store to get the canned soup that you n...

Space Saver Storage Solutions
2007-05-20 08:55:00
Even those who live in large, spacious homes, have trouble storing all of their things. Because no matter how much space there is, there’s always something new to buy and many older things that you just can’t bear to part with. Over time, I have stumbled upon efficient space saver storage solutions as well as several interesting ways to create extra storage where there was none before. One of the most frequently overlooked storage spaces is under the bed, a place where things inevitably disappear to but are infrequently placed there are on purpose. An under bed drawer is a convenient place to store extra bedding or clothing that is not in season. It can also be a well-situated place to store children’s toys, as they can reach it easily without standing on their toes or chairs. Those who need even more storage space can consider a space saving crew bed or a loft bed with a chest of drawers underneath. Installing hooks on the back of your doors is another one of the wonde...

5 Superlative Exercises to Keep Your House Clean and Your Body Healthy
2007-05-13 21:28:00
Getting back into shape after the birth of a baby is not usually an easy thing to do. But then again, maintaining one’s shape or working towards a healthier life is difficult even when there is no baby in the picture. Between work, housework, sleep (or, at the very least, fatigue) and errands, there is always an excuse to postpone exercise for another day (or in some cases, another week or even another month). Alternatively, you may be the type of person who always finds time for the gym but never finds time for housework, so that you have fabulous abs but a sloppy home. No matter what your excuses are, it’s time to stop being lazy and to grab the bull by its horns. Engaging in various household activities that require even a modicum of physical exertion will create a balance between housework and exercise so that you can simultaneously enjoy a well-maintained home and a well-maintained body. In fact, the U.S. surgeon general and the Center for Disease Control and Preventi...

Get Hooked on Hooks
2007-05-07 09:01:00
If members of your household are in the habit of dropping their things on the floor, near the door, or anywhere else they could pose a hazard or create a mess, coat hooks may be an easy answer to your problem. Hanging coat hooks in strategic and obvious places throughout your home will offer constant reminders to hang things up and can add a bit of pizzazz to any bedroom, bathroom or walk-in closet. For those who don’t have a coat closet or whose closet is busting at the seams, coat hooks are an easy way to create a home for sweaters, coats, and bags. When placing hooks at the in the front hall or mudroom, make sure that they are both functional and beautiful, so that they can inspire a good impression for anyone who comes by. Consider placing different hooks at different heights, so as to maximize your space and enable children to hang up their own coats. Choose from a classic look, a contemporary style, or make a bold statement by choosing a more whimsical hook. Coat hooks i...

Third Time’s a Charm
2007-04-30 08:53:00
The recent birth of our third daughter, Odelia, was met with excitement and enthusiasm; not only are we seasoned veterans in the art of raising girls, but we already have a full wardrobe of baby clothing just waiting to be worn again. Although we couldn’t have known several years ago that we’d be having another girl, I decided to pack up all of my second daughter’s clothes in an organized fashion (just in case we needed it again). Fortunately, having this forethought enabled my husband to easily find all of the baby clothing that we needed while I was still in the hospital…so that our new daughter could come home in an appropriate outfit and have a nice selection of clothing ready for her upon arrival. I was pleasantly surprised at the ease (and speed) with which we were able to reorganize our home after Odelia’s arrival. I hope that sharing these tips with you will help to minimize the stress and pressures that accompany the arrival of a new child, so that the transit...

The Benefits of Menu Planning
2007-04-23 09:58:00
Until last night, I never really considered the advantages of menu planning. In the back of my mind, I’ve always known that there are various health benefits associated with menu planning, and that it would likely reduce the stress that I feel every night when I have to consider what to feed my family. But last night, during a course that I’m taking about budgeting and family finance, the instructor suggested that menu planning can also help me retain better control over my monthly expenditures. Hmm…a plan that can make me healthier, wealthier AND less-stressed? Maybe it IS something worth considering. The benefits of menu planning are many. For one family, the financial benefits may be the primary motive for menu planning. For another, it may be the ease with which dinner can be ready. But no matter what your original reason was, menu planning will likely transform your life for the better in ways that you never intended. One of the paramount reasons to plan a men...

10-Minute Pick (Me) Ups
2007-04-16 16:28:00
I have an entire list of things that I plan on doing “when I have the time.”  It’s a pretty varied list- it includes everything from personal things like getting a haircut or taking a bath to more altruistic enterprises like donating my old clothes to the homeless or finding my daughter’s lost doll.  And yet, the fact that I am constantly pushing off these activities indicates that perhaps I never really have the time or, more likely, that I have been remiss in making the time for things that I really do want to get done.  I honestly believe that if I won the lottery, I’d find the time necessary to redeem my ticket.  So how can it be that I don’t have the time to do the things I’ve been desperate to do for so long (which will likely involve less time than filling out the paperwork associated with my ‘win’)?  The solution can only be that I need to learn how to make more time in my schedule, or perhaps to waste less time, so that more time can appear as if fr...

Organize Your Finance: Simple Tips for Organizing Your Finances
2007-04-01 09:41:00
The steady approach of tax season is often accompanied by the gradual build-up of worry and panic. Where are my important documents? How much will I have to pay? How will I ever get everything organized in time? While these concerns and questions are valid, they may also be quite avoidable. Keeping your finances in order and your financial documents organized throughout the year will not only make you more fiscally responsible (and perhaps wealthier), but will also remove the stress associated with tax season. Follow these five simple steps to regain control of your finances- and to enjoy the spring more, without having to worry about getting your things in order. 1- Create an organized home for all of your financial documents The easiest way to stay on top of your finances is to make sure that you know where all of your important financial documents are when you need them. It will be easier to balance your checkbook if you can find it and to pay your bills if you know where ...

How to Make a Manageable Morning
2007-03-27 21:10:00
For many people, getting out of the house on time each morning- with everything that they’ll need for the workday- can really be a challenge. How many times have you neglected to take your medicine, left your lunch on the counter or wasted time in the morning searching for your keys? With a bit of forethought, these types of blunders and mistakes are easily preventable- and your morning can become a bit calmer instead of crazier. The best way to fight the morning frenzy is to prepare for your morning the night before. While it may be difficult to get everything ready when you’re weary from a long day, a bit of advance planning can go a long way to start your next day off on the right foot. Pack your children’s lunches- and your own- the night before, so that it’s easy to grab on your way out the door. If your food choices do not need to be refrigerated, place them directly into your briefcase or your children’s backpacks, so that you won’t forget them in the morning....

Making Room for One More
2007-03-19 09:15:00
As the birth of our third child rapidly approaches, it suddenly seems like a good time to start making room for baby. Although I’m not a first-time parent, I’m still amazed by how the clothing and paraphernalia of such a tiny being can take up almost as much space as my full-sized ‘grown-up’ clothing. And yet, while this is likely to remain one of the greatest mysteries of all time, I find myself left with no choice but to banish my face cream, extra shampoo and makeup bag to make space in the bathroom for Balmex, wipes and baby lotion. When my first daughter was born, it was relatively easy to make room for all of her things. We just dumped it all into the new nursery and called it a day. When my second daughter was born, it was a bit more challenging, since we’d already accumulated a warehouse-worthy amount of dolls, books and clothing. Luckily, we had enough space to put both girls in the same room, so I just shoved everything aside and made way for more. But now...

How to Stop Losing your Keys
2007-03-11 10:07:00
It’s happened again. You’re on your way out the door, late for work, and you can’t seem to find your keys. They’re not in your briefcase, purse or jacket pocket. They’re not in the pocket of yesterday’s pants. Nor are they on the kitchen table, the counter, or the floor. You’ve tried installing a homing device on your keychain, but somehow, the battery always dies, or the keys are always located out of range. Oh, that’s right! You brought them into the bathroom for a last minute check on your way out the door. Or worse, your kids found them and threw them in the bathtub. (Stop laughing, that actually happened to me). After breathing a sigh of relief, you think to yourself, there MUST be a better way. Guess what? THERE IS! The easiest way to keep track of your keys is to designate a spot for them in the entrance of your house, and make a supreme effort to put them there. A wall-mounted glass shelf will make a beautiful addition to any foyer or mudroom, and will ...

Spring Cleaning Preview
2007-03-07 10:26:00
Forever the optimist, I like to believe that once February hits, spring is on its way. After all, we’ve already been through four unpleasant months of rain, snow and generally unpleasant weather (ok, most of us have been- those who live in year-round warm weather have a right to gloat). But with the refreshing warmth of spring also comes the not-so-pleasant task of spring cleaning. And it’s never too early to start thinking about how to clean your house efficiently- or how much better it will look once the work is complete. Breaking your chores down into manageable tasks can help make spring cleaning less overwhelming and more realistic, so that you aren’t apprehensive about jumping right in. - Begin by making a list of all the things that you plan on achieving during your cleaning. - List each task separately so that you feel accomplished when you cross things off and so that you can finish things quickly without getting discouraged. - Make a separate list of cleaning prod...

How to Help Your Disorganized Friend(s)
2007-02-27 08:47:01
Do you have a friend who just can?t seem to get it together? He or she is always flustered, her house is always messy, or her nerves are always frayed? Perhaps it?s because he just increased his hours at work or she is having a difficult time adjusting to life with a new baby. Maybe an illness has disrupted the routine that used to govern the home or a vacation has nullified the monotony of daily life. No matter what the cause, I?m pretty sure that everyone knows at least one person like that, who tries and tries but just can?t seem to keep things under control. Over the past few years, I?ve known a few people like that, and I know from firsthand experience that it can be excruciating to watch a friend struggle. But there are things that the more organized and controlled among us can do to help our friends organize their homes or regain the control that they somehow managed to lose along the way. One of the easiest ways to help a friend without spending a lot of money is to s...

The Gift of a Garage
2007-02-20 08:41:01
Our new house doesn?t have a garage. So I may not be the most authoritative person about how to keep a garage neat and organized. On the other hand, without a garage, I know what I?m missing, and can appreciate a tidy garage perhaps even more than those who have let their garage?s cleanliness fall to the wayside. We currently have no place to store our bicycles, helmets or garden hose. There is no place to stash beach chairs, outdoor toys, sports equipment or spare tubs of car wax. Instead, we must think very carefully about where we want to store each one of these items so that they don?t end up sitting in our living room or overcrowding our coat closet. I firmly believe that if garage owners took as much care in storing their things as we do (by force, but still), there would be millions more neat garages out there. And who knows? There may even be room to store some more cars inside their intended homes, rather than on the street. One of the most useful tools I?ve found ...

How to Stop Losing Your Socks
2007-02-11 14:34:02
Whenever somebody asks me if I have an idea for a get-rich-quick scheme, I always respond the same way. If I wanted to make a million bucks quickly, I?m pretty sure all I?d have to do is start selling socks in groups of three, instead of in pairs. It sounds so easy, and possibly a bit silly. But think about how many pairs of socks you?ve had to throw out because you can?t find the match, or because one has a hole. If you had a spare, you could increase the life of a pair of socks twofold, if not more. And all you?d have to spend is a dollar more on the initial investment. Ok, it may not be the most amazing plan, but there?s a great deal of truth behind my sarcasm. There must be a better way to hang onto a pair of socks, so that I?m not independently supporting Hanes. To keep my kids? socks in order, my mother thought she was doing me a favor- she bought them 12 pairs of the exact same white tube socks. I thought it was ingenious (and very generous). Until Hollie decided ...

A Romantic Valentine?s Gift?
2007-02-04 14:28:01
Buying flowers is a very romantic, albeit typical way to tell someone you love them. Ditto for sending a card, a box of chocolate, or even a nice piece of jewelry. Both men and women who have been married for a while will likely run out of original Valentine ?s Day gift ideas, and may choose to abandon the gift-giving tradition in its entirety. This year, however, there?s no need to throw in the towel. Give your loved one something that he or she can appreciate for more than an hour, a day or a week- show someone you love them by investing your time to help make their lives more organized or tidy. In return, your loved one will likely be more willing to invest serious time into making you happy as well- a win-win situation for all. For Him I?ll be the first to admit that a neat apartment or freshly organized desk may not be what your man envisioned as his ideal Valentine?s Day gift.
