Woman held at airport with fake passport
2008-04-15 05:35:00
KOLKATA: It would have been the perfect forgery had Kamu Ben been a little better informed about the person, whose passport a tout had forged for her. But alert immigration officials at Kolkata airport caught her on the wrong foot, quite literally, and foiled her attempt to fly to the US with a false passport, minutes before she was to board the flight early on Monday. The 54-year-old woman had come to Kolkata from Ahemdabad to board a flight to USA via Frankfurt. She had disguised herself as Manjula Ben Patel, a 60-year-old woman, whose passport she had forged with the help of a tout. A resident of Ahmedabad, Kamu Ben was going to USA to work as a house governess. She managed to reach the immigration zone of the Kolkata airport on a wheelchair as advised by the tout. Manjula Ben, whose passport she had forged, was physically challenged and immigration records stated that she couldn?t get up from her chair. But immigration officials smelt a rat. They asked Kamu Ben if she wo...

No short-changing here: Numismatics now a big draw
2008-04-14 05:15:00
MUMBAI: The numismatic industry in India is booming like never before. From being a hobby of a few people couple of years back, today, collecting coins and notes is being viewed as a mode of fruitful investment. A perfect example of this is an extremely rare Rs 5,000 note, that was in circulation in India between 1954 and 1978, was auctioned on Saturday for a whooping Rs 6.6 lakh ? highest sum ever paid for an Indian note.Over 300 rare coins, tokens, medals and notes were auctioned at the 26th Todywalla auction in Mumbai on Saturday. Some of the coins that were auctioned dated back to the time of Chandragupta Maurya (380 AD). Also included in the auction were gold and silver coins which were in use during the mughal empire, and a range of Indian notes belonging to the 20th century. However, the major attraction of the auction was the Rs 5,000 note, which went to an anonymous bidder. The price of Rs 6.6 lakh was almost double of its estimated price of Rs 3-3.5 lakh. Another set of six...

Quota conundrum leaves IIM-Ahmedabad confused
2008-04-14 05:13:00
AHMEDABAD: The Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM-A) remains confused over the implementation of the 27 per cent reservation for other backward classes (OBCs) in the coming academic session, as it is yet to receive any direction from the central government."No communication has so far been received from the human resource development (HRD) ministry," IIM-A director Samir Barua told IANS Saturday.Barua said the Supreme Court judgement in this regards earlier this week "lacks clarity"."We will have to wait and see," he said. The Supreme Court Thursday upheld the reservation law providing 27 percent quota for OBCs in government institutions of higher learning. Though the court order has no specific reference to the IIMs, it says that graduates cannot be treated as educationally backward. This creates confusion that while institutes like the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) are bound to implement the quota, IIMs may...

Thrill drives speedsters crazy
2008-04-14 05:07:00
AHMEDABAD: Speed, glam, girls and show off...that is what the teenagers use their parents' cars for and with vacation approaching the scare of underage driving is only on the rise.As the moon is ready to set and the roads are left empty only for dog-fights, these teenagers hit not just the city roads but also the Ahmedabad Vadodara Expressway, in cars borrowed from their parents or drivers who are to drive them around."Speeding is a thrill that most of my friends enjoy and what car you are driving is a style statement. We talk about latest models of cars, new launches and boast about the speed we have touched," says Hardik Varia. The stretches where one can often find these youngsters racing are 132 Ft Ring Road, Panjrapol to IIM-A crossroad and Shivranjani till Judges Bungalow. "We generally race at the speed of 120 km/hr to 140 km/hr. These streets are deserted in the night but still there is some traffic. Bowlers did it with their batting
2008-04-14 05:05:00
Morale plays an important psychological part in a team game and nowhere was this more evident than on the morning of the third day?s play when Sreesanth and Ishant Sharma defied all that South African bowlers had to throw at them. Theirs was the kind of partnership that brings a smile on the faces, especially of their more accomplished batting teammates and has the dressing room in a lighter and more positive mood as it prepares to go out and bowl. On the other hand, the opposition, having failed to separate the last wicket pair in an over or so, gets increasingly frustrated and the mood becomes angrier. This is not the best way to go out to bat and leads to some rather rash strokes. Neil Mackenzie who had batted so splendidly throughout the series and with a preference for stroking in the ?v? attempted to pull a ball which, on this pitch with the variable bounce, was asking for trouble and that?s what he got. So what Sreesanth had done was not only to get the opposition riled with ...
India, South Africa and a tale of 2 collapses
2008-04-14 05:03:00
Indian cricketers ride on car a vehicle awarded to Harbhajan Singh for the man-of-the-series title at the end of the third test match against South Africa in Kanpur, India. (Bikas Das/AP) Posterity will most likely remember the India-South Africa series that ended Sunday in Kanpur, India, for an extraordinary innings of 319 by the Indian batsman Virender Sehwag. Ultimately, however, the series turned on two spectacular batting collapses.South Africa was spun out for only 121 on Sunday. This allowed India to even the series of three five-day tests, 1-1. The first match, featuring Sehwag's innings, was drawn. In the second match, India had fallen behind in Ahmedabad, where it was bowled out for 76, its second-lowest total in 75 years of home test matches. In the third test, South Africa's Kanpur collapse meant that a tightly-contested match suddenly became a rout. India had no trouble scoring the 62 runs it needed to win.For India, there was the satisfaction of replying to critics ...

Car crashes after late night racing
2008-04-13 05:35:00
AHMEDABAD: A grey silver Lancer zoomed out of the darkness down the Judges Bungalow road at break-neck speed late on Thursday night. Disaster struck when the driver of the car, allegedly in an inebriated condition, lost control of the car. It first hit a street lamp post, flipped over the road-divider and then overturned on the other side of the road. The driver and his co-passenger were trapped briefly underneath. The incident was the fallout of a late-night racing on empty city roads. Youngsters riding high-speed bikes and cars often zoom down the city roads, especially in unearthly hours. Traffic policemen, who are by then off-duty, seem only too happy to look the other way.It was in fact a good Samaritan act by people staying in nearby housing socieities that saved Ronak Upadhyay, 17.Ronak was pulled out from underneath the crushed car and put in 108 Emergency medical services. Both were later admitted to Sterling Hospital. Ronak has sustained grievous injuries in his head and mu...

India start well against South Africa
2008-04-13 05:31:00
India's teenaged paceman Ishant Sharma and spinner Harbhajan Singh grabbed three wickets each to help bowl out South Africa for 265 on the first day of their third and final test. The tall Sharma took three for 55 coming back from injury and off-spinner Harbhajan took three for 52 to lead the spin attack after skipper Anil Kumble was ruled out due to injury. South Africa skipper Graeme Smith gave his side a superb start after he won a crucial toss on a dry Green Park pitch which aided spin from the word go. However, a batting slump after lunch saw the tourists fold at stumps as India ran through the innings after tea, claiming the last six wickets for 66 runs. Smith top-scored with 69 and added 61 runs with fellow opener Neil McKenzie (36) and put on 91 runs for the next wicket with Hashim Amla, who made 51. Both fell in succession followed by key batsman Jacques Kallis (one), for the addition of just nine runs, after they were coasting at 152-1. "The wicket is deteriorating quit...

Key to Sadiq encounter with journalist
2008-04-12 05:27:00
AHMEDABAD: The script for the Sadiq Jamal Mehtar encounter read like any other encounter where the police claimed "intelligence inputs" about this man's involvement in terrorist activities. In the FIR lodged on January 13, 2003, the then crime branch inspector Jaisinh Parmar stated that Sadiq was present in Chief Minister Narendra Modi's function at Khokhra on November 24, 2002 with a pistol with intention to kill him. Interestingly, the crime branch ignored a critical detail that a case against Sadiq was registered in Bhavnagar just nine days before he appeared in the said Modi function. He and five others were booked in a gambling offence and set free after the formalities. The details of how the police was tipped off about Sadiq's presence near Galaxy cinema at Naroda on the night of January 12 are in stark contrast to what Mumbai-based journalist Ketan Tirodkar, believed to be Daya Nayak's ally, said about Sadiq's killing. He narrated how Sadiq was made a bait in a gran...

Another encounter case comes to haunt Modi govt
2008-04-11 05:44:00
AHMEDABAD: The ghost of another encounter is set to haunt the Gujarat government, after the Sohrabuddin fake encounter case in which 15 police officers are behind bars. Sadiq Jamal Mehtar, 25, of Bhavnagar, was killed in an encounter in Naroda area of Ahmedabad on January 13, 2003 under suspicious circumstances. Inspired by the revelations in the Sohrabuddin case, his brother, Sabbir Mehtar, challenged the encounter in the Gujarat High Court last year, in a petition that brings out loopholes in the case. The state government has been dragging its feet over filing an affidavit in response to this petition. Sabbir's petition says senior police officers like additional director general of police P P Pandey, DIG D G Vanzara and others be booked and the investigation handed over to CBI or any other agency. Vanzara is already in jail in the Sohrabuddin case. A major evidence against the police is that the cartridges found were of .38 bore while the gun found in Sadiq's hand at the enco...

2008-04-11 05:43:00
Kanpur: Sounding a note of warning to the hosts, South African captain Graeme Smith on Thursday said that they would go into the third Test here on Friday with a well thought-out plan to prevent the Indians from equalling the three-match series. Sounding too confident of his boys, Smith said his team had made definite plans and this time they would play even better than what they had in Ahmedabad where they had handed an innings defeat to Team India. Addressing a press conference here before the practice session at the Green Park stadium, the Proteas skipper admitted that like the Aussies, the Indians are a tough team to beat in their homeground. ''But we have done this in this sub-contitent by beating Pakistan, Bangladesh and now India,'' he pointed out. Setting aside the controversy ranging around the condition of the pitch, the SA skipper said such things happened and the homeside always got the benefit. '' Our boys are focused to perform to their best and things will chan...
