Race your bicycle against BRTS!
2008-04-11 05:39:00
AHMEDABAD: The latest excitement on the BRTS track is going to be the bicycle! Given the greens that would adorn the BRTS corridor, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation plans exclusive bicycle tracks on the BRTS route to be functional by 2009.For Amdavadis living on the west of Sabarmati, especially the health freaks and children who commute to school on bicycles, this will be a bonanza coming along with the modern transport system that will change the way the city commutes. The idea of cycling down to a nearest BRTS bus stand and then boarding a bus to office on CG road or Ashram road may also appeal to office-goers. All you would need is a spray of deodorant to drown the sweaty feeling under the collar. The 132-feet ring road between RTO and Shivranjini will have exclusive biking tracks. Bicycle s would also pedal from Shivranjini towards Bopal and Nehrunagar, Gujarat University, Law Garden and Ellisbridge. Some are already excited. Mehul Parikh, a network security expert, says: "If th...

IIMs ready with OBC quota blueprint
2008-04-10 20:27:00
Ahmedabad, Apr 10 Although the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) have sought some time to study Thursday?s Supreme Court verdict before deciding on the course of action to be taken regarding implementation of OBC quota, the institutes appear to be in a position to implement the quota from this year itself. For instance, the website of IIM-A specifically envisages two scenarios for admissions for the 2008-10 academic year. Working on the premise that the institute could well be ordered to implement the quota from this academic session itself, the website specifies the number of students who are to be admitted for this academic session. As per the first scenario, if the SC?s stay on quota implementation?which was passed in February last year following a PIL filed against the recommendations of the 2006 Veerappa Moily report?remains in force until the admission list for 2008-09 is announced, no provision would be made for OBC candidates. In this case, of the total 251 students to ...

Smith confident of repeating Ahmedabad success
2008-04-10 20:25:00
Kanpur: Sounding a note of warning to the hosts, South African captain Graeme Smith on Thursday said that they would go into the third Test here on Friday with a well thought-out plan to prevent the Indians from equalling the three-match series. Sounding too confident of his boys, Smith said his team had made definite plans and this time they would play even better than what they had in Ahmedabad where they had handed an innings defeat to Team India. Addressing a press conference here before the practice session at the Green Park stadium, the Proteas skipper admitted that like the Aussies, the Indians are a tough team to beat in their homeground. ''But we have done this in this sub-contitent by beating Pakistan, Bangladesh and now India,'' he pointed out. Setting aside the controversy ranging around the condition of the pitch, the SA skipper said such things happened and the homeside always got the benefit. '' Our boys are focused to perform to their best and things will chan...

No green alert for India in Kanpur
2008-04-09 08:54:00
In the first two Tests of the ongoing Test series between India and South Africa, we have seen a triple century, a double ton, some fierce pace bowling by the visiting team and a team being bowled out in the first session of a Test match.Despite such eventful happenings on the field, the real newsmakers in the series so far have been the curators. While Kannan Parthasarathy was criticised for giving a super flat track in Chennai, Dhiraj Parsana came under the scanner for leaving live grass on the wicket for the second Test at Ahmedabad. And with the third and decisive Test starting in Kanpur on Friday, Green Park curator Shiv Kumar will be under the spotlight and could be in the line of fire if the pitch is not to the liking of the hosts. Kumar, however, has an able ally in Daljit Singh, the head of the Indian cricket board's pitch and grounds committee.Singh has been stationed here since Monday. Does Singh?s presence means he was asked to inspect the preparation of the Kanpur wicket...

2008-04-07 08:09:00
South Africa captain Graeme Smith believes how India go about replacing the injured Sachin Tendulkar will be a key factor in the third Test. The 34-year-old batsman will miss the Kanpur encounter, which gets under way on Friday, with the groin problem which kept him out of the second Test defeat to the Proteas in Ahmedabad."The fact that people ask the question itself shows what a big loss it is for the Indian team," Smith responded when asked to gauge the impact of Tendulkar's absence."Sachin has got a stature and an aura in this team and is a terrific player. So, it is a massive loss for India and how they replace him is the key."Board of Control for Cricket in India secretary Niranjan Shah confirmed in a statement on Saturday that the 'Little Master' would not be fit for the third Test.He said: "Sachin is making good progress in his recovery, but he has not recovered sufficiently to be available for the third Test."Sachin has a rehabilitation programme to continue with and will...

2008-04-07 07:54:00
AHMEDABAD: The future of medical education in Gujarat could very well depend on this bunch of professors from BJ Medical College (BJMC) who were shunted from Ahmedabad to Bhavnagar medical college and back, since February this year, just to show the requisite numbers to the visiting teams of the Medical Council of India (MCI) for approval of seats. In February, 23 professors from BJMC, Ahmedabad, were transferred to Bhavnagar because an MCI inspection was due on March 2-3 to approve undergraduate seats. Ahmedabad Test: South Africa on top
2008-04-07 07:45:00
South Africa 's batsmen seized control of the second Test on Thursday after India was bowled out in the first session of a Test for the first time ever. Neil McKenzie (42) and Graeme Smith (34) shared an opening partnership of 78, overhauling India's miserable first innings total of 76, and South Africa reached 100-2 at tea.McKenzie was out at the stroke of lunch, leaving Hashim Amla (15) as the unbeaten batsman.India won the toss and elected to bat, but South Africa paceman Dale Steyn claimed 5-23 to bundle India out for its second lowest total at home - just one run more than the 75 it made against the West Indies in 1987.Makhaya Ntini took three wickets from his initial four overs and Steyn's searing pace ripped through the host's batting lineup. This was India's second shortest Test innings, behind the 17-over dismissal by England at Lord's in 1974 when it was dismissed for 42.Ntini (3-18) made the first breakthrough as opener Wasim Jaffer (9) edged an outswinger, offering ...

2008-04-05 07:16:00
AHMEDABAD: Gujarat Home Minister Amit Shah is exerting to oust Gujarat Cricket Association chief, and Congressman, Narhari Amin only to help Narendra Modi inconspicuously take over the cash-crammed body. The wily strategy was revealed to DNA by a cricket administrator who had recently moved a no-confidence motion against Amin in the Central Board of Cricket Ahmedabad (CBCA), the most powerful affiliate of the GCA, based in Ahmedabad. And DNA has learnt that once the chief minister is sure that he can garner the required numbers to take over the GCA, he may openly step into the ring. The official said that Modi?s presence at the GCA?s helm will add impetus to the effort of Arun Jaitley, a BJP stalwart, to increase their (BJP) influence in the BCCI. Jaitley is currently the president of the Delhi District Cricket Association. ?The chief minister is very close to Jaitley,? the official said. ?And if Modi comes to power at the GCA, it will certainly help the former law minister and BJP as...

With Sachin Tendulkar out with a groin injury, India went for the extra bowling option, picking Irfan Pathan in his place.R P Singh kept his spot, despite appearing to be short of both form and fitness in Chennai. Ahmedabad: Good Food, Good Cricket
2008-04-04 07:37:00
Dhoni - swiped greedily at a length ball.Sometimes referred to as the armpit of India, Ahmedabad is the capital of the dry state of Gujarat. It is dry because most of the state is desert and because alcohol is prohibited. The ground is often described as the worst venue to tour on the international circuit. But I can report that this reputation is undeserved and that Ahmedabad is a spread-out and pleasant city where traffic jams have nothing on groaning metropolises of Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Delhi. The local cuisine is probably the tastiest in India, tourists are not hassled and the abundance of trees along the Sabarmati River helps one forget about the environmental disaster that is India in the 21st century.Or perhaps I am in such jolly spirits because of South Africa's brilliant performance with the ball today, bowling out India for a paltry 76 runs and following it up with a solid 224 for four with the bat. And I smuggled in a good bottle of brandy. And I can have a del...

2008-04-04 07:35:00
Ahmedabad, Apr 3 (ANI): South Africa virtually batted India out of the second Test at the Motera Stadium here, taking a commanding 147-run lead in their first innings, and still having six wickets in hand at the close of play on the first day on Thursday.Having bundled India out for 76 in 20 overs, the Proteas batsmen piled up the host?s agony by scoring a formidable 223 for four at the close. All their batters managed to get good starts before off-spinner Harbhajan Singh (three wickets) and pacer S. Sreesanth (one wicket) made some inroads into their line-up.At the close of play, Jacques Kallis with 60 and A. B. deVilliers with 59 were at the crease, promising to quash any chances of India making it back into the match.Earlier in the day, the searing pace of Dale Steyn (five wickets), Makaya Ntini (three wickets) and Morne Morkel (two wickets) brushed aside the much-vaunted Indian batting line-up for their second lowest score on Indian soil.Indian captain Anil Kumble won the toss a...

Arthur happy with Ahmedabad pitch
2008-04-04 07:32:00
South Africa coach Mickey Arthur believes the Ahmedabad pitch will offer more to the bowlers in the second Test against India than the Chennai surface provided last week. The first Test between the nations petered out into a tame draw on Sunday after the batsmen ran amok but Arthur is happy with the shades of green at the Motera Stadium and is hopeful the Proteas will take advantage on Thursday."I like the look of the track," he told The Star. "At least there's a bit of grass plus moisture which I don't believe will be there when the game starts, but it's an encouraging sign."He added: "There was nothing in it for the bowlers in Chennai even when they put their backs into it. It was tough but I believe we have come out better and strong mentally from that searching test we were put through."Arthur believes he has the firepower on the bowling front to win the Test, and expects spinner Paul Harris to play a greater role than in Chennai."We battled initially to get wickets but when (...

Don't blame pitch for Motera debacle: Daljit Singh
2008-04-04 07:27:00
India's dismissal for a mere 76 runs in the second Test in Ahmedabad on Thursday may have been blamed on the pitch, but the chairman of BCCI's Ground and Pitch Committee insists there is no devil in the 22-yard strip.Even though India crashed to one of their lowest totals in Test history, Daljit Singh said the wicket prepared by Dhiraj Parsanna was not a poor one."The track had some moisture and some grass cover. We (India) had a very strong batting line-up and we just needed our top batsmen to stay there for one or two hours," Singh told PTI.The grass was needed to hold the wicket for five days, he argued."It is already touching 40 degrees Celsius in Ahmedabad. The track which has been prepared needs to be good enough to hold for five days of cricket. We don't need a situation where the wicket starts to crumble on the third day itself," he said."I would say that it was just a bad session and nothing else. Our top order batsmen needed to apply themselves more to sail through the ...
