Indian visitor upset over Gandhi statue position at Tussauds
2008-06-07 08:09:00
AHMEDABAD: Not happy with the placement of Mahatma Gandhi 's statue at Madam Tussauds, a man from Gujarat after his first visit to the famous wax museum has written to Britain's Prime Minister Gordon Brown to shift it from that position. V K Saxena of National Council of Civic Liberties in his letter to Brown said the statue is not placed in the wing where the statues of other illustrious world leaders are exhibited. Gandhi's statue is placed at an isolated corner on the second floor near an ice cream parlour close to the dustbin, Saxena wrote in his letter. Thousands of visitors who use this parlour throw away waste into the bin which often spills out near the statue, he said. He requested Brown to take immediate action to see that this anomaly is rectified. Saxena has also sent copies of his letter to all national leaders including Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Leader of Opposition L K Advani.Source: economictimes

UPA plan: 8 gas cylinders a year at current rate, extra to cost double
2008-06-04 11:10:00
New Delhi, hike today z New LPG distribution policy, hike of Rs 3/l on petrol, Rs 2/l on diesel The UPA government has worked out a Rs 3-hike in the retail price of one litre of petrol, Rs 2 for diesel and a new distribution scheme for cooking gas. Under this, each consumer would get eight cylinders at the current subsidised rate of about Rs 300 and any extra cylinder would be delivered at the market price (Rs 650, given that Rs 350 is the subsidy.) The proposal, hammered after weeklong political parleys, suggests a price increase of Rs 3 per litre on petrol and Rs 2 on diesel while keeping kerosene and LPG prices unchanged. This would garner Rs 11,855 crore for state-run oil marketing companies that are likely to lose Rs 225,000 crore during the current fiscal because of high global crude oil prices. Though ostensibly the proposal says there would be no change in LPG price, the eight-cylinder annual limit is expected to reduce the subsidy component by 33 per cent equal to a Rs 100 ...

Petrol price to increase
2008-06-04 11:09:00
At midnight on Tuesday motorists will pay almost R10 for a litre of petrol as the latest price hike comes into effect.Last week it was announced that the retail price of all grades of petrol will rise by another 50 cents a litre. This comes after last month's steep price increase that saw the cost of diesel rise above the R10/litre mark and render thousands of older pumps unable to handle the extra digit. The increase comes in the wake of Reserve Bank Governor Tito Mboweni's announcement that a 2 percent rise in the interest rate was being considered to keep inflation within the target range.Source

Education ventures mean serious business for IIM, IIT graduates
2008-06-04 06:21:00
Working in the education sector was always a weekend activity, not a potential employment avenue. But in an emerging wave, students from the best academic institutes are getting inclined towards making a mark in the field of education.Think of an Indian Institute of Management (IIM) or Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) graduate, and the first thing to come to mind is a plush job either in investment banking, consultancy or IT. However, the likes of Vardan Kabra and Ankita Diwekar-Kabra ? students of IIM-Ahmedabad 2004 batch ? are changing this thinking. This duo conceptualised the Fountainhead Education Foundation ? a custom-designed pre-school and childcare centre in Surat for children between the age of one and five adapted from internationally renowned methods."I got a Rs 7 lakh pre-placement offer from Procter and Gamble (P & G). But neither did I take it up nor sit for the placements. I believe that quality education should be a big business. There are not enough choices for ...

New Delhi's Bus Rapid Transit System - Democracy Rides a Bus
2008-05-15 19:17:00
For close to a month now, the newspapers in Delhi have been busy covering the fracas caused by the decision of the government to introduce the Bus Rapid System on a fast track. The intent of the government might have been good; but the experience from the phenomenon proves one thing that of course should have been obvious long ago - that technology is a great too but no panacea. Ultimately technological solutions have to operate in society and society is inhabited by human beings, not robots who will dance to a piper?s tune.I missing link in the government?s high powered group, the Delhi Integrated Multi-modal Transit System (DIMTS) Delhi Integrated Multi-modal Transit System (DIMTS) has got experience in several fields and has obviously got strong political backing but it does not appear to have thought of including a behavioral psychologist or an anthropologist in its technical team who could have assessed and evaluated the traffic usage pattern in Delhi and offered some recommend...
