A Challenge for the U.S.: Sun Rising on the East
2008-05-07 05:47:00 By MICHIKO KAKUTANIMay 7, NY TimesWhat a difference five years — and one war — make!In a 2003 article in Newsweek, written on the eve of the invasion of Iraq, Fareed Zakaria — a columnist for the magazine and the editor of its international edition — wrote: “It is now clear that the current era can really have only one name, the unipolar world — an age with only one global power. America’s position today is unprecedented.” He went on to declare that “American dominance is not simply military. The U.S. economy is as large as the next three — Japan, Germany and Britain — put together,” adding that “it is more dynamic economically, more youthful demographically and more flexible culturally than any other part of the world.” What worries people around the world above all else, he wrote, “is living in a world shaped and dominated by one country — the United States.”In his new book, “The Post-American World,” Mr. Zakaria writes that America remains a ... Breastfeeding Boosts the Child's Intelligence
2008-05-07 03:59:00 The precise cause is not yet knownBy Stefan Anitei, Science EditorMay 7, SoftpediaCurrently, in many western countries, less than 1% of women breastfeed continuously for the first six months of the baby's life. In the UK, the category most prone to breastfeeding was found to be formed of well educated, professional women, older than 30 and mothers for the first time. The fear of ending up with saggy breasts (although recent researches have come to infirm this theory), commodity, lack of time and other factors have contributed to this low percentage. With all that, studies have shown that colostrum, that yellowishmilk secreted after birth, is the first package of immune factors delivered to the infant's body. Breastfed babies are five times less likely to get gastroenteritis as compared to formula-fed ones, also two times less likely to catch a respiratory disease in their first seven years of life, as well as much less vulnerable to diabetes. Breastfeeding prevents children from tu... More About: Intelligence
Breaking News: Obama wins in North Carolina, NBC projects
2008-05-07 03:34:00 Race too close to call in Indiana; exit polls show economy looming largeMay 7, MSNBCBarack Obama defeated Hillary Rodham Clinton on Tuesday in the North Carolina primary, one of the last two big-delegate states left in their marathon race for the Democratic presidential nomination, NBC News projected. In the other state, Indiana, the race was too close to call, the network said.Obama's decisive win in North Carolina mirrored earlier triumphs in Southern states with large black populations, Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana and South Carolina among them. That made Indiana a virtual must-win state for the former first lady, who was hoping to counter Obama's delegate advantage with a strong run through the late primaries. With more than two-thirds of precincts reporting, Clinton was leading by 53 percent to 47 percent, though the race was tightening.Obama, in a raucous rally in Raleigh, N.C., congratulated Clinton on what he said "appears to be" a win in Indiana. But, he told the crowd, "Toni... Mystery of Jupiter's Rings Solved
2008-05-06 13:51:00 May 6, FoxNewsJupiter has a thin set of nearly imperceptible rings with features that have long puzzled scientists.A new study reveals how light and shadow are at work there, solving several mysteries at once.Nowhere near as visible as the rings of Saturn, which are icy and bright and contain many chunks as big as houses, Jupiter's rings are made mostly of dark dust. They were discovered in 1979 by Voyager 1.Not until the Galileo spacecraft, orbiting Jupiter from 1995 to 2003, did scientists figure out the rings were made of dust kicked up by meteoroids slamming into Jupiter's inner moons.Yet oddities remained that didn't match theoretical predictions: The rings protrude beyond the orbit of the moon Thebe, and part of the ring system is tilted compared to the main ring plane.Alternating light and shadow cause these anomalies, the new research finds."As they orbit about the planet, dust grains in the rings alternately discharge and charge when they pass through the planet's shado... Steven Spielberg's Wii-Inspired Videogame Is a Demolitious Block Party
2008-05-06 13:18:00 By Chris KohlerMay 6, WiredSteven Spielberg knows a thing or two about action games. He advised on the development of the Medal of Honor series, based on his film Saving Private Ryan, and he claims to be on his second play-through of the processor-punishing PC title Crysis. So it's a bit surprising to learn that for his first venture as a videogame creative director, the man behind Indiana Jones and Jurassic Park is making not a photorealistic shooter but a cross between Tetris and Jenga. It all goes back to when he was a kid, Spielberg says. He'd spend hours setting up his electric trains so that the locomotives would crash into one another. Now, with the help of a design team at Electronic Arts, Spielberg hopes to recapture that spirit of creative destruction in Boom Blox, out in May.Inspired by a Wii tennis session, the auteur got the idea of combining Nintendo's innovative Wiimote motion-sensing controller with his youthful delight in mayhem. Women are better managers, study finds
2008-05-05 15:21:00 By Myles WearringMay 5, News.com.auWOMEN are more effective in nearly all aspects of business management, with men superior in only two areas, a study has found.According to research, which collected data from over 1800 Australian female and male CEOs and managers, women scored higher than men on the key issues of strategic drive, risk taking, people skills, aesthetics and altruism, and innovation.Females equalled males in the area of emotional stability. The two areas men came out on top were command and control of management operations, and focusing on financial returns. This showed men were more task focused and more comfortable getting the job done, rather than bothering with relationships, the study said."The study reflects the ability of women to look beyond operational process management and cost control alone, and focus more on the holistic elements of a business," said Gillian O'Mara, director and general manager of Steps Leadership Programs, which commissioned the study by ... Which Auto Brands Should Go?
2008-05-05 08:01:00 There are too many brands and not enough buyers. Many auto-industry insiders agree weak ones should go, but it's not that easyBy Jim HenryMay 5, BusinessWeekThere's a growing sense among currency traders that the U.S. dollar might finally stop its long slide against other major currencies. The euro almost hit $1.60, a record high against the dollar, on Apr. 22, the same day the dollar index—a measure of the greenback against a basket of major currencies—also showed record weakness. But since then, the buck has been on a modest upswing. The euro traded at $1.54 on May 2, and the dollar index is 3% off its lows. "We think the dollar is carving out a bottom," says Meg Browne, senior currency strategist at Brown Brothers Harriman. The main cause of the dollar's recent strength is the same reason for its rapid collapse over the past year: the U.S. Federal Reserve. The dollar's value suffered when the Fed cut interest rates rapidly to stem the financial crisis and prevent a U.S. rece... More About: Auto , Brands

Microsoft's Failed Yahoo Bid Raises Pressure for Plan on Google

Inc. increases the pressure on Chief Executive Officer Steve Ballmer to make his money-losing Internet business succeed against Google Inc.Ballmer's bid for Yahoo, the most-visited Web site, signaled that Microsoft was making little progress against Google in Internet search advertising, said Charles Di Bona, a Sanford C. Bernstein analyst. Ballmer withdrew his bid over the weekend after Yahoo refused a sweetened offer of almost $50 billion in stock, leaving investors asking what his online strategy will be.``They've got to come out sooner rather than later with a pretty well articulated vision,'' said New York-based Di Bona. The danger for Microsoft is that Google, owner of the most popular Web search engine and winner of the most online advertising dollars, will expand its dominance while Ballmer plans a new course. Some dissident groups worried that the military junta running Myanmar would be reluctant to ask for international help.Tropical Cyclone Nargis hit at a delicate time for the junta, less than a week ahead of a crucial referendum on a new constitution. Should the junta be seen as failing disaster victims, voters who already blame the regime for ruining the economy and squashing democracy could take out their frustrations at the ballot box. Some in Yangon complained the 400,000-strong military was doing little to help victims after Saturday's storm."Where are all those uniformed people who are always ready to beat civilians?" said a trishaw driver who refused to be identified for fear of retribution. Cola Is Bad for Your Bones
2008-04-30 06:19:00 It steals their calciumBy Stefan Anitei, Science EditorApril 30, SoftpediaJunk food and cola are part of the standard diet for any cool kid. Nevertheless, it turns out that cola is compromising the strength of their bones, as revealed by a new research published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition."There is enough evidence that high consumption of soda and carbonatedbeverages is associated with somewhat lower bone mass in children, and that's a real concern and people should be aware of it," said Dr Lawrence Raisz, director of the University of Connecticut Centre for Osteoporosis. The precise reason of this effect is not known, but a few theories have been emitted so far. Cola consumers may replace nutritious beverages (like calcium rich milk or calcium fortified juice) from their diet with cola, consuming less calcium and vitamin D. The caffeine in cola has also been connected to bone mass loss.Another culprit could be the phosphoric acid in cola, because it takes calcium... More About: Bones

Five Failed 3-D Technologies
2008-04-30 05:01:00 By Charlie SorrelApril 30, WiredSome of science fiction's predictions have passed fitfully into the present; video phones and geostationary satellites for example. Others seem destined to remain forever in the hereafter, despite being almost universal in movies and literature. The list will be familiar: jetpacks, food pills, silver clothes with giant collars. One technology, though, resurfaces every few years and makes it to market, only to disappear into the morass of nostalgia soon after. These are 3-D displays, attempts to turn boring old flat telly into a depth-charged experience. Some products failed because they were junk, others just fade from view and resurface years later. This is a list of the most notable flops.3-D SpexWe see in three dimensions because we have two eyes. 2008-04-28 04:30:00 April 28, YahooDUBAI (Reuters) - The Syrian site Israel bombed in September was not part of a nuclear weapons program, but was a military facility under construction, President Bashar al-Assad said in remarks published on Sunday.ADVERTISEMENTLast week, Washington released intelligence alleging Syria had built a nuclear reactor with North Korean help before an Israeli air strike destroyed the facility on September 6."Is it logical? 2008-04-28 04:16:00 By Alan Henry in BarcelonaApril 28, The GuardianLewis Hamilton last night said he was "terrified" after his team-mate, Heikki Kovalainen, slammed off the track into a tyre barrier at about 145mph during the Spanish grand prix. Although Kovalainen gave the thumbs-up as he was removed from the accident scene strapped to a stretcher, he was suffering from concussion and was taken by helicopter to a local hospital where it was expected he would be kept overnight as a precaution. As Kovalainen wrestled to keep his car on its planned trajectory through the fifth-gear right-hander, the left front tyre exploded and the car skidded straight on, ploughing into a protective tyre bar... Honda Goes Crazy With A Hot Wheels Racer
2008-04-25 13:53:00 By Matthew PhenixApril 25, Wired Even sensible Honda has a wild side. For a company that prides itself on the fuel-efficiency of its cars, a two-seater with a 20-liter V-10 seems somewhat out of character. And yet, what kid wants to play with a Hot Wheels car modeled on a Civic Hybrid? When six-year-old boys think of cars, they think of things like the Honda Racer . The 1/64th-scale die-cast car, which goes on sale next month, was born of Mattel's Designer's Challenge and the Hot Wheels 40th anniversary celebration. Honda - along with Chevrolet, Dodge, Ford, Lotus, and Mitsubishi - got a chance to design a no-holds-barred expression of their brand's inner child. The Honda Racer is intended to evoke the company's H emblem and draws its stylistic inspiration from the 1967 RA273 Formula 1 car.Read more this news quotephoto by Wired More About: Crazy
Why the world needs Madonna
