Children's Clothing, Toy Consignment Sale
2008-04-03 16:39:00
Four Corners Community Nursery (4CCN) in Silver Spring is not only a wonderful preschool, they have one of the best local consignment sales in the area. 4CCN's annual children's clothing and toy consignment sale will be held Tuesday April 15-Thursday April 17. This sale is HUGE and has wonderful items every year. I have scored the Exersaucer at left, Lily Pulitzer sun dresses, Talbots Kids neck ties and Little Tikes backyard loot in previous years for unbelievable prices. Tuesday and Wednesday have the best selection, but on Thursday everything is half price.Days that you can bring your own items for consignment are Monday April 14 and Tuesday April 15. However, 4CCN is able to accept only the first 110 consignors, so please call (301) 681-9520 ASAP to reserve your space. The fee to consign your items is only $5. Spring Fitness & Fashion: Tone It, Tan It, Own It, Fake It
2008-04-02 16:40:00
I have come to the realization that although I may succeed in dropping a few pounds before swimsuit season, I may reign in my postpartum muffin top into a bagel bite, I am not going to magically emerge from my mommy flesh cocoon on Memorial Day weekend as the Giselle of the 'burbs. Sad, but true. I'm writing this from sunny southern California while visiting my folks, a land where in the April heat it is impossible to hide beneath a black turtleneck and cords. What I can do is work with what I got, and if busyness and laziness prevail, I can always fake it. Here's my action plan.Tone It: This spring and summer I am going to be happy with my body and simply work to make it stronger. I am not going to have some unrealistic notion of a complete trade-in at the dealer, I'm going for detailing. I'm going to schedule workouts and classes, place the Pilates DVDs right smack next to the player, push the double stroller to the park, play tag with my babies and try not to think too much ...

Perfect Post Award to Urban Mama
2008-04-01 05:26:00
Urban Mama , aka Sandie, is a fellow Silver Spring mother and blogger. She is also a freelance entertainment writer and movie reviewer with a hearty grasp of pop culture and a wicked sense of humor. If that isn't awe-inspiring enough, she recently gave birth at home to her third child. She is new to the SS after a rich life in NYC, but is learning to love these MoCo 'burbs.I am bestowing on her my first Perfect Post Award because I love her writing, especially this piece she wrote, reflecting on how she feels after the birth of her third sweet baby:The Importance of Being Still With my two New York City babies, I was out and about within 48 hours of their births. I would bundle them up, grab my favorite sling, and walk a half-block to the bodega, or around the corner to our beloved coffee shop, the Pillow Cafe. I walked to the playground, the supermarket, and in the case of itty bitty Delia, my second-born, to her older brother Elias' preschool, a brisk 15-minute s...

2008-04-01 00:34:00
Clark's Elioak Farm opens Tuesday, April 1st for the spring-fall season. This charming land of family fun is located right on the Howard County-Montgomery County border off of Rt. 29. A working farm since 1797, the 540 acre farm has oodles of animals that children can view up close, pet and feed. There are hay rides through the farm fields, playgrounds and imaginative play areas throughout the farm for kids of all ages.In 2005 the farm purchased the play structures and attractions of the 1950s amusement story book park The Enchanted Forest, restored many of them for patrons' enjoyment and the farm continues to resurrect items from this fairy tale land. Get A Sitter: Olazzo in Silver Spring for Date Night, Martini & Wine Specia
2008-03-31 04:20:00
Olazzo in Silver Spring was an unexpected gem, and trust me, I have waited several days for the martini buzz to wear off. My husband and I had a spur-of-the-moment date night thanks to Grandma, and I had read on a lovely neighborhood list serv that Olazzo offered good drink specials and yummy fare. And boy, do they. Not only are bottles of wine 1/2 price on Mondays and martinis only $5 on Tuesdays, the pasta entrées are divine. We started off the Tuesday night with a bang and each ordered a martini. From the extensive choices, we chose the Olazzo (me), a heavenly concoction of raspberry Stoli, cranberry, pineapple and red wine, and the classic Dirty (him.) Both were tasty and stiff, the perfect and difficult-to-achieve combo. We moved on to dinner and greedily learned that all entrées are served with a green salad and freshly baked bread. He ordered the linguine with clams, and our gracious server recommended that he go for the white wine sauce. I chose the shrimp rose, penne ...

Take the words out of my mouth
2008-03-18 14:48:00
This missive is cross-posted from DC Metro Moms Blog, where the topic of the day is mommy guilt. The mommy guilt that I possess stems from the everyday exasperation I feel as a stay-at-home mom to two very spirited, energetic and amazing children, my four- and two-year-old. Surprisingly, it's not the staying home and abandonment of my professional career that brings the guilt; this set up is working for my family, for my children and the longer I perform this housewife/mommy combo gig, the more comfortable I feel with the decision. What brings the guilt that causes me to shiver with horror at 2am are the words that come out of my, and sometimes my children's, mouths throughout the course of a normal day. As Devra Renner and Aviva Pflock, authors of Mommy Guilt: Learn to Worry Less, Focus on What Matters Most and Raise Happier Kids and Parentopia, wrote in the wonderful earlier interview on DC Metro Moms,Once parents hit the preschool years and beyond, the number one inducer acr...

St. Pat's Joke from Dr. Pia
2008-03-17 14:33:00
Dr. Pia de Solenni, new feminist rock star, Catholic theologian and my amazing real life girlfriend sent me a good G-rated Irish joke:Two men were sitting next to each other at a bar. After awhile, one guy looks at the other and says, 'I can't help but think, from listening to you, that you're from Ireland.'The other guy responds proudly, 'Yes, that I am!'The first guy says, 'So am I! And where about from might you be?'The other guy answers, 'I'm from Dublin, I am.'The first guy responds, 'So am I!''Sure and begorra. And what street did you live on in Dublin?'The other guy says, 'A lovely little area it was. I lived onMcCleary Street in the old central part of town.'The first guy says, 'Faith and it's a small world. So did I! So did I! And to what school would you have been going'? The other guy answers, 'Well now, I went to St. Mary's, of course.' The first guy gets really excited and says, 'And so did I. Tell me, what year did you graduate...

Indoor Local Pools by Tech Savvy Mama
2008-03-17 13:22:00
Now that it seems that spring has arrived in Silver Spring, I?m dreaming of summer. I eagerly anticipate Memorial Day when our pool will open and we?ll begin a season of meeting up with friends who we haven?t seen since Labor Day, morning swim lessons followed by picnic lunches, and afternoon pool playdates with Armand?s and Domino?s delivering dinner poolside. In the meantime, Little Miss Tech ie has been taking some swim lessons at Martin Luther King, Jr. pool. Captain Computer, who needs no introduction to water, just started AquaTots a couple weeks ago. We are taking full advantage of recreation swim times as often as possible to make sure we are pool ready come Memorial Day weekend. Recreational swim sessions for the entire family are available daily at each Montgomery County Pool. There are various options for paying for recreational swim sessions. You can pay as you go, purchase a family pass, or pre-pay for 10 admissions and get 2 free. For pool hours, sche...

Parenting in Silver Spring
2008-03-09 02:13:00
Parenting in Silver Spring means...being lulled to sleep by the sound of trucks on the Beltway and Georgia Avenue, and telling yourself they sound like waves crashing on the beach.you pay more for the babysitter than the tickets to see your favorite band's show in DC.making three separate grocery trips when hosting a dinner party in order to buy wine, liquor, and food.getting to use your native or school-learned Spanish at the park on a daily basis.your hometown relatives should never be told what you paid for your small 3 bedroom home.the word "immersion" brings elusive French- and Spanish-language public school classrooms to mind, not swimming lessons.your children use chopsticks at age 1; at age 2 can differentiate between the meatballs at Pho 75 and Pho 88.the kids have enjoyed the benefits of free admission to the Smithsonian 100 times more than any traveling 8th grader.with one visit from Grandma you can escape to a tropical island in 3 hours flat.you weep when entering the...

Celebrate Spring with the Park Finder
2008-03-07 22:24:00
We can finally play outside, the crocus are sprouting, the trees are budding...spring is here! What better way to celebrate than with the trusty Montgomery County Park s and Playground Finder ?OK, it's just a seemingly simple list of the parks and playgrounds in the county, but with a little imagination you can go on a hunt with your child for a brand new world of possibilities and play. Just go to this link, hit Ctrl-F on your keyboard, type in your zip code, a neighboring zip or the name of your town in the window, and then keep clicking Next. Click the green link on each park's name for a photo and description of its features. I guarantee you will find some parks and playgrounds listed that you have not yet tried with your family. And now you have some new play options with your kids that are 100% outdoors, 100% free.My kids and I have found brand new lands and adventures this way, giving each park it's own unique name, like "Jumping Bridge Park," "Space Shuttle Park," "Wood...

Things Learned from Lovely Listservs
2008-03-07 05:13:00
Do you read your neighborhood or local parenting listservs? They are wonderful and make our modern, urban world feel like we're back in time chewing the fat at the general store. Just search for your neighborhood or town's name on the Yahoo! Groups main page, and search for "moms" or "parents" and your town's name if you are looking for parenting-specific forums. Here's what I have recently learned from the listservs in my 'hood and mamaland, in no particular order:Wheaton Plaza now has an electric train that runs along the first floor of the mall to give rides to kids that have made it through mom's errands. It's just like the one at White Flint. The miniature steam engines at Wheaton and Cabin John Regional Parks and the carousel at Wheaton open on the first Saturday of spring break, March 22nd.Mrs. K's Toll House has added a 3,600 square foot wine cellar called "The Wine Press" to the famous restaurant. Paen to parents with preschool paranoia
2008-02-20 00:48:00
If you are currently in the throes of preschool open houses, waiting lists, applications, deposits, nights spent in sleeping bags to secure a place and other angst, my prayers are with you. Seriously. Last year I was where you are now, and it was tough. Linda at Monkey Business has written some brilliant, real, compassionate posts about going through this process with her two kids this year; if you need an online comrade in this anxious time, she is your gal. And so am I. I made it through, and you will too. When my first kid left toddlerhood, gained a little sister and had his third birthday, I started to consider preschool for him in the coming fall. I read everything I could Google or obtain from the libraries (my sincere apologies to Silver Spring library patrons if you were waiting on Maria Montessori's book those three, OK, five months I had it checked out; for the fines I paid I could have bought us all our own copies.) I hounded parents in Safeway, CVS, the pediatric...

An Ode to Real Simple
2008-02-19 00:37:00
I'm obsessed with Real Simple . It's weird. Some people followed Phish, slept outside to see U2, write fan letters to their favorite denizens of Hollywood. I was a Hill staffer for years who interacted with many a "bullet taker," the tasteless slang for a political junkie who really, really loves his boss. I've known persons that will not utter a word in the morning until they have devoured the Times or the Journal. But here I am, pathologically devoted to a style magazine. It may sound frivolous, but hear me out. After years of cramped apartment slothdom with a revolving door of roommates, then a teensy newlywed abode, my husband and I purchased our home in Silver Spring. It was love at first mortgage, but it is also a quaint 1950s Cape Cod in which the original owners left us everything that they couldn't take to their retirement condo. We agreed to buy their mower and grill, and they left us all their eight tracks, used tin foil collection and 48 years worth of dusty pile...
Woodmoor Pastry Shop = V Day Lovin'
2008-02-18 00:44:00
Happy Valentine's Day everyone! Would you be mine? Today my preschooler is excited about his class party and giving paper hearts and chocolate to all his friends, I have promised my husband that I will make googly eyes at him tonight and not the computer. Pretty standard semi-urban bliss. Barf.Something that can really get everyone's heart pumping is a trip to the Woodmoor Pastry Shop to choose one of those beautiful treats lined up under the glass. Serious yum. It's a kid's paradise and always reminds my son and I of the candy shop in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (the Gene Wilder version.) My daughter can't resist the huge yellow happy face sugar cookies and my son is methodically working his way through a different cookie choice at each special visit.I am a fan of seeing just how long I can make one of their chocolate encrusted strawberry petit fors last, and then eating a second one like a huge bite of sushi. But it's hard to go too crazy as the sign of the ne...

Woman of the Week: Diane Macklin, Storyteller
2008-02-15 21:47:00
Have you ever been so excited to phone someone that your hands shook as you dialed? That is how I felt this week when I called Diane Macklin for an interview. One of the country's most revered storytellers, this phenomenal woman is using her gift to educate children and adults about history, diversity and peace. Diane is a griot, a communicator of oral tradition that uses stories and a dynamic, interactive style to convey messages of historic value and wisdom to her audiences. (Diane humbly explained to me that the title of griot is an honored one that must be bestowed on her by others and not one that she calls herself.) In the griotic style, she tells stories from Africa and America, and feels that through story she can help to unite "...our incredibly diverse culture. We all have a story, just as we all have a beating heart." Diane was enthusiastic about the opportunity to reach out to Silver Spring residents. She says, "I really enjoy the diversity of Silver Spring. Ther...

Wheaton Ice Arena Classes by Tech Savvy Mama
2008-02-14 19:01:00
Contrary to how it may appear on my blog, Little Miss Tech ie does not spend all her time in front of the computer. In fact, Little Miss Techie is like most other four year olds in that she spends most of her day at school, playing with friends or her brother (Captain Computer), or taking an extra-curricular class or two. This fall we discovered ice skating lessons at Wheaton Ice Arena . Wheaton Ice Arena is part of Montgomery Parks (MNCPPC) and is just one of two ice rinks in the county (the other being Cabin John Ice Rink in Rockville).Little Miss Techie began at the most basic class (Tot 1) where she learned the oh-so-important skills of staying upright on skates and how to stand up when she fell. While the first couple of classes seemed all about falling down and getting back up, I was pleasantly surprised to see her actually moving on skates come the third lesson. So maybe she was only marching, but when round 2 of classes started (Tot 2), Little Miss Techie was ...
