Wings of Fancy Live Butterfly Exhibit at Brookside Gardens
2008-05-06 17:17:00
The butterflies are here! Now through mid-September from 10-4 each day at Brookside Gardens , your child and you can be surrounded by live butterflies. "Wings of Fancy" features Asian, Costa Rican and North American butterflies flying freely through the south conservatory and feasting on fruit and tropical flowering nectar plants. Butterfly nirvana is achievable right in Wheaton! Be sure to request to borrow a Butterfly Discovery Backpack for your child during the tour. Filled with activities and other tools of a lepidopterist (butterfly expert), the backpacks enrich the butterfly garden experience for kids aged preschool and up.If you and your kids can recite The Hungry Little Caterpillar from memory, don't miss the butterfly "births" as the colorful newbies emerge from their cocoons in the glass cases in the middle of the exhibit. As you can see here, my kids are entranced. If you have children that are not yet walking, be aware that strollers are not allowed in the butterfly ...

Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Museum in Baltimore: Family Fun With or Without t
2008-05-03 07:03:00
Jodifur just wrote a hilarious account and photo diary of her and her family's "Day Out with Thomas" experience at the B&O Railroad Museum in Baltimore .My own 4 and 2 year olds are train-crazy and this obsession has become a family pastime that has taken us to the National Capital Trolley Museum, Strasburg Railroad in Lancaster County, Walkersville Southern Railroad and the B&O ourselves. I also believe that we should own stock in the Wheaton and Cabin John mini trains, have brought a travel potty on Metro and have taught my kids to cheer on the White Flint Express when we chug past Williams-Sonoma.ANYWAYS, we love love the B&O as a family day trip, but we have always avoided the big Thomas shin-digs, much to our son's dismay. The photos I have seen from the events and from the promo clips at the beginning of the Thomas and Friends DVDs look so sweet, a wholesome family day celebrating the bygone era of the steam engine. Toot toot! However, Jodi has told me all I nee...

Perfect Post Award to Surely You Nest
2008-05-01 18:13:00
Surely You Nest 's Mama Bird is a writer, a mother and an environmental activist who is changing the world one post at a time. Her words stay with me days after she publishes and inspire me to make daily changes towards greener living. She is also a former public school teacher who articulated perfectly what so many of us parents feel about the extreme focus of classroom time in the public schools on standardized testing, and the conflict that arises in a public school supporter's soul when one considers alternatives outside of the public elementary school in the neighborhood. Cross-posted on DC Metro Moms, this essay is my awardee for the April Perfect Post Award s and Surely You Nest is my suggested addition to your RSS feed.************************************ ***************************************Wh y So Much Testing and So Little Love of Learning? by Surely You Nest All of my friends want to know if the DC Public Schools are right for their kids. Get Organized in Style, Thanks to the Silver Spring Mocha Moms
2008-04-29 14:25:00
The Silver Spring Mocha Moms group, the local chapter of a fantastic national organization for mothers of color (and open to moms of every color), is offering a way to get organized for a good cause: Visit www.ssmochas.lovablelabels.ca, order labels by Saturday May 3rd and a portion of the proceeds will go to support the SS Mocha's events in the community.I love being organized and revel in the sense of peace that not mistaking the cumin for cinnamon brings to my household and the morning cinnamon toast. But I know that I do not feel like wasting a $50 printer cartridge to print my spice labels, organize my home office files or spending valuable time standing over my antique Lexmark. I also love the creative way that the kids' bookbag tags and labels will keep my son's hoodie or my daughter's sippy from getting mixed up with their friends' and classmates' items. There is also personalized stationery for a price less than Cranes, and when was the last time Cranes gave back ...

Free face painting on Mondays at Barston's Child's Play
2008-04-28 05:48:00
On manic Mondays, sometimes the kids and I head over to Rockville Pike's Congressional Plaza. One of the kids might need a haircut by Debbye at Cartoon Cuts ($2 off coupon if you click "special promotions,") I'll use one of our 20% off coupons at Buy Buy Baby (if you don't get those in the mail, you can join the email list) or we'll have another errand at one of the family-focused bank account drains located in this shopping center. To turn the drudgery of Monday errands into magic, we'll hop into Barston's Child's Play . With free face painting on Mondays for kids from 11-11:30am a quick stop inside this stimulating toy and children's book store makes the day special. There are train tables and doll houses for interactive play, a hollow "tree" for crawling through in the center of the store and friendly staff that doesn't mind if kids try out the toys. There are bins of wind ups and novelties in the 50 cent - $4 range right by the cash register, if you find it impossible ...

Pirate Cruise in Annapolis
2008-04-24 16:15:00
One of the most fun adventures we have had as a family has been taking the Pirate s of the Chesapeake Cruise in Annapolis , and we can't wait 'til May 24 when cruises open and we can sail the seas again! Designed specifically with young children and families in mind, this is such a cool way to spend an hour on the water while fulfilling your little swashbucklers' dreams. The Pirate Crew and Captain Marcus Waters are energetic, young college-aged kids that really get into the whole "shiver me timbers" and "walk the plank, matey" thing. They help the kids dress like pirates, engage the kids in a treasure hunt, tell them a pirate yarn and teach them to shoot water cannons at a "bad pirate." (The crew staff told us that they draw straws to determine which one will don the wetsuit and row out in a rowboat to be doused by water cannons and fall in the Bay.)Adults are $16, Children 3-11 are $13 and here is a coupon for $2 off a kid ticket, limit one per family. Children 2 & under are...

Woman of the Week: Jill Asher, Organizer of This Weekend's National Marrow
2008-04-17 12:51:00
A Parent in Silver Spring's Woman of the Week is Jill Asher, a phenomenal woman working to promote the National Marrow Donor Program. If you live in Silicon Valley or the Bay Area, please attend the marrow drive on Saturday in Palo Alto and assist the over 6,000 people in the country waiting for a life-saving donor. If you live in the Washington, DC area or cannot attend, anyone can help by performing a home saliva swab, sending it in and contributing your healthy information to the national registry, complete information here.Patients with lymphoma, leukemia and other life-threatening diseases can be treated with a marrow transplant, often their only hope for a cure. This is a cause close to Jill's heart, for her mother is battling leukemia and is set to receive a critical marrow transplant next month. As Jill recently wrote:Long term remission (or a cure) will depend on a bone marrow transplant. So....the only "productive" thing I could think of was to hold a MARROW DRIVE, ...

The Pajama Squid: Coolest Kids Store & Site Ever
2008-04-16 07:21:00
The Pajama Squid is a dream of a children's boutique and online shopping site, and the dream child of Tiffany King. I walked through the doors of the brick and mortar Takoma Park location yesterday and was immediately filled with a ravenous desire for every single item on the beautiful shelves. Everywhere I looked were children's and baby items with originality and character. Literally each item I viewed was completely unlike anything I have seen in my exhaustive retail study of kid stuff these last five years: lovely frocks, suave leather retro sneakers, hand-sewn stuffed creatures, t-shirts with clever or classic graphic design, hardcover art books, wooden toys.Takoma Park resident and boutique owner Tiffany King has hand-selected The Pajama Squid's imaginative inventory. Rather than attend the retail shows and dispassionately choose items marketed by Madison Ave, Tiffany personally researched and chose the unique handmade clothes, toys and books. Springtime in DC: Nature's Answer to Zoloft
2008-04-13 17:07:00
I had just about had it with this stinking wet, wussy Washington weather. This winter's extreme cold and never-ending sleet drove me to buy a puffy down coat about as flattering as one of those inflatable Sumo wrestling suits; my popsicle toes forced me to break down and join the hideous cult of the Uggs. I'm a Southern California desert chick that never owned a coat until I was 18 and has separate sections of my closet for casual, dressy and beach/pool-only flipflops. Every January - March the seasonal depression and gloom of the area just slays me. After the Christmas decorations are stowed away, the cold, grey, freezing winds make the yearnings for my old California towns creep into my heart. But I exited the plane at BWI this week after a long visit back to SoCal, and I stepped into an idyllic Washington spring. All the trees had bloomed, there were fields of daffodils everywhere and I remembered why I have loved living here these last 10 years. It's like the DC weat...

A Break for Mommy: Spa Week in Silver Spring & all over the country
2008-04-13 00:14:00
My friend Kristin has a hilarious blog called Mommy Needs a Cocktail and an online shop called Baby Brewing, and with my last order of fabulous tees and baby gifts she tucked in a darling little magnet with a retro design that proclaimed "Mommy Needs A Break ." (She also sent the same magnet in her baby gift to Angelina Jolie, see here.)My point, and I do have one: Have truer words ever been printed thanMommy Needs a Break? Well, select spas and salons can provide you with one for a reduced price with Spa Week April 14-20. The below locations are offering deluxe treatments for the dramatically reduced price of $50. This deal means that a 50 minute rubdown will cost about the same as a 20 minute one, and you'll get cool things like hot lava rocks on your back, champagne with your pedi and other diva magic. Here is the list of spas all over country that are participating, such as Elizabeth Arden Red Door salons and other fancy places. For my Silver Spring sisters (OK, brothers too)...
