Clogged drains won’t make a modern city

KOZHIKODE: Poor drainage continues to stare in the face of authorities even while efforts are being made to develop Kozhikode into a modern city.With apartment blocks sprouting in large numbers, the drainage in city seems to be in doldrums. Lack of civic sense is also causing trouble as public have no qualms in dumping garbage in open drains. Result: Sewage/ rain water from clogged drains spilling over to streets.For a clean city, the Corporation should make adequate allocation for constructing drains in its coming budget as many of the low-lying areas in wards 37, 44, 45, 46, 47 and 48 are getting flooded during monsoon. The situation in areas near Medical College are worse with life here turning miserable during rains.Though funds were allocated regularly for the construction and maintenance of drains, the work remains inadequate. Whenever faced with a crisis, the Corporation shifts blame to Irrigation Department for not finishing the dredging of Canoly Canal.The storm water drain...

Ragam '07 -Cultural fete at NIT-C from Wednesday

KOZHIKODE: Ragam '07, billed as one of the best inter-collegiate cultural festivals in South India, will be held at the National Institute of Technology, Calicut (NIT-C), campus, near here, from March 14 to 17. The theme this year is "Games of chance." Ragam, started as a music festival in the late 1970s when the institute was known as the Regional Engineering College, has gained stature, attracting students from professional and arts and science colleges. What make the event remarkable are the 2,000 students of the NIT-C, who form a strong cheering squad for the contestants. The event is noted for the organisational skills displayed by the future engineers. Every Ragam edition promises to come up with surprises. Experts discuss ways to fight increasing cyber crimes

KOZHIKODE: Police Commissioner Balram Kumar Upadhyaya inaugurated a one-day seminar on `Cyber Crime s: Detection and Prevention' being held at the National Institute of Technology, Calicut (NIT-C) on Saturday. Inaugurating the seminar organised jointly by the Computer Society of India Calicut Chapter, the State IT Mission and the NIT-C, Mr. Upadhyaya explained how it was possible to detect who had uploaded the pirated copy of the movie `Notebook' for free download on a website and how to prevent similar crimes. NIT-C Director G.R.C. Reddy presided over the function. Computer Society of India Calicut chairman K.P. Mohandas and vice-chairman A. Rajagopal spoke. CDAC Joint Director V.K. Bhadran spoke on how computers can be used by people intent on causing damage or for carrying out illegal activities. 10 non-metro airport environs may be developed

The airports at 35 non-metro cities including those at Tiruchi, Kozhikode, Tirupati and Hubli could soon get modern terminal buildings, in addition to which, world-class hotels and restaurants may also come around the location. This will become possible largely on account of the Government indicating on Friday that it would issue tenders inviting the private sector to participate in the city-side development of 10 non-metro airports within the next two months. "We should come up with the proposals in the next 45-60 days. The interested parties can respond to these. Even as these proposals are put out, the Airport s Authority of India is taking a number of steps to improve the facilities in secondary airports," the Civil Aviation Secretary, Mr Ashok Chawla, said.Source
