The Weekend Getaway
2008-04-16 20:32:00
Recently, our kids and grandkids decided that we all needed a weekend getaway! We found a state park with a wonderful old inn that was a short drive (less than 200 miles) for all the family to meet and the facilities were great for the entire crew. Pokagon State Park is at the intersection of I-69 and I-80/90 and is only about 3 hours from Wright Patterson AFB, OH, 3.5 hours from Great Lakes Naval Training Center,IL and 2.5 hours from Selfridge Air National Guard Base, MI.The park had hiking trails, a horse barn for saddle enthusiasts, an indoor pool to entertain the younger set, a game room with air hockey, ping pong, and video games, various restaurants and fun spots just to hang out. We actually found an outdoor porch on the second floor that with a quilt or two provided a lot of evening entertainment as well as we sat and overlooked Lake James. The weather wasn't very cooperative with a mix of rain, snow, wind, cloudy days and cool temps but hey some of us lived in Iceland f...

Feeling out of sorts? Wondering where you are?
2008-04-15 15:24:00
Direction:There will never be a time in your life when you don?t need it!Therefore, there will always be something new. There will always be someplace where others have been? and you will soon experience. There are places and times to listen, read and remember. There are navigation aids: maps, Garmin or TomTom, cook books, the Bible, WebMD, Instruction manuals, report cards, IRS sheets. Going alone is a plan that sometimes has to be followed.Going with a team member makes the journey a bit lighter.Being a team member and helping with the load, the listening, the remembering readies the team for the goal. Find your direction with help. Use the resources that are out there. Share your experiences. Document your successes. Life is a journey that is ongoing. Tell us where you are going! Tell us where you have been, what you have seen and tell us what you would love to share. We are listening! We are learning!Visit us at MilitaryAvenue.com

New Beginnings
2008-04-15 14:08:00
Hubby is home today. I can tell things are winding down for him. It's been forever since he got up and put on jeans as opposed to a suit. He is self-employed so he is having to "close up shop" while he is deployed. Yesterday was hard for me for some reason; but today I'm feeling pretty good. Nothing like an emotional roller coaster! I woke up yesterday weepy, realizing that his 'going away party' is this weekend. (I'll have to devout a whole blog-entry to his party preparations later.)Feeling weepy & fighting a cold I headed off to MOPS with my two boys regardless. We have 'two chapters' of MOPS at our church. I help with child-care during Alpha week and then I attend the actual meetings on Omega week. So it's an every other week thing.Yesterday was childcare. I am lead teacher for the 5 year-old crew, about 15 children. They are all SO READY for summer. The room was bouncing. But I do think that their energy must have rubbed off on me because by the end of ...

Small Group: The Joys of Entertaining
2008-04-11 14:21:00
Wednesday was small group at my house. I am enjoying the company of our weekly small-group from church. We are a range of ages. Hubby and I happen to be the youngest at 34. The oldest couple's child just left for college this fall & they are empty nesters. One member of our group is single and another member's husband has dart-league the same night we meet. Soon Hubby will be gone and that will just add to the dynamic, me being the temporary single-mom. So we are a group of 14 of all different backgrounds and I love it.The month of April "Small Group " has been at our house. Once a week at around 4pm I go into a frantic frizzy of cleaning. You would think that I would be able to keep an 'unused' room (our living & dining room) clean from week to week ... but I picture a 'Toy Story' type of scene every night around midnight. The toys, dust, dirt, Hubby's army gear all crawl into the Living Room and have a giant party. I don't know if they can't just find their way bac...

A Mom, A Memory and a Moment of WHOA!
2008-04-10 16:34:00
As a Mom... I got to know the Emergency room a lot better (or worse) than I ever had known it. James was ( a wonderful word here) asthmatic. He went from racing 70 miles an hour around the house to hunched shoulders and sitting in a corner in 32 seconds. Housing at Scott AFB was so close to the hospital, it was quicker to walk cutting through a neighbor's yard and right into the ER. They knew us. We knew the routine: a shot, the IV insertion, and then the albuterol in a breathing treatment. He would be admitted up to the 4th floor, nurses greeted him by name, tossled his blond hair and allowed him free range of the refrigerator full of Popsicles.Yesterday I was there again. Not at Scott, but at another ER. I was amazed that the breathing treatment still popped and smoked and was just the same. No longer does a nurse give the instructions for the treatment... but a respiratory therapist. I sat there and listened and then... WHOA... it was me who needed it. The mask went on me... the...

Spring is Here and What are those Trees?
2008-04-08 15:10:00
We moved so many times and to so many different climates from tropical; to near Arctic; to desert SW; coastal Carolina and Pacific NW. We appreciated learning new plants and trees and really enjoyed relaxing in our new garden once we got into the house. I think one of our best stress relievers was walking outside during the moving in process and taking a look around and dreaming/planning what we could do with our yard and the landscaping. Fast forward to our retirement home and walking around deciding what trees and plants can go where! So much fun and maybe we could see them in 5 years! Then we pulled out a tree catalog and said maybe we should plant some of these here and there! What fun! One of the trees we picked was the beautiful Redbud which would grow in the climate of our new Midwestern home. We decided to purchase them in the spring with several others and then walked our yard during our October move in to decide where to put them! Imagine our surprise the next spr...

Financial (In)dependence
2008-04-08 03:47:00
My son opened his first checking account this last weekend. He is 14 and can barely hold onto a nickle before it is spent.Financial Independence. I was 16 when I got my first credit-card. I was preparing to travel to England with our high-school drama team. We were stationed at Keflavik NAS, Iceland and I was no actress. But it was an opportunity to get off of "The Rock" as we so lovingly called our little part of the island. Mom & Dad decided I needed a way to pay for things beyond carrying around a lot of cash. The card was attached to my parents' name too but, man, I felt like big stuff. That credit card and I had our good times and our bad times together. I realize looking back that my parents must have really loved me because there were a few purchases made on it that they probably could have said... "Ahem, Leanne, what is this on our statement?!" But they didn't.Eventually (like the day after I graduated from college) the bills were turned over in my name entire...
A Minute out of the Norm: Plant Some Seeds
2008-04-03 15:28:00
It is still pretty cold here in the Midwest, the danger of frost certainly has not passed. In fact, I wouldn't be totally surprised if we got more snow (aghast) between now and the end of the month. However, my boys and I have started our summer garden. Before I dive into the topic of our garden I have to share a 'funny' story about miscommunication. My husband was going birthday shopping with the boys last Saturday for me. I asked him while he was out to please pick out some seeds for our annual vegetable-garden. He won't be around this year for our vegetable & herb garden so I thought this would be a great way for him to have a hand in it, picking out which plants we would grow.I didn't realize I had to specify this wasn't a birthday present. Later that evening when I asked him if he picked up some seeds everyone looked at me disgusted... "Why are you asking what we got you for your birthday."Mental Note: when sending him out for future errands don't confuse him with two...

A is for April... every Military Child gets an A too!
2008-04-02 16:29:00
April is just jammed packed with action. It is after all the month of the Military Child : right there my mind is racing through pictures of friends, their babies, my babies... and my babies' babies. Whoa... better stop.April comes in like a lion... and out like a lamb. April Fools. April showers bring May flowers. They all relate to those military children: Hear the roar of their excitement, patriotism, experience and networking friends. See the shy sheepish look as they once again enter a new school building. But don't forget the warmth of their smiles!Catch that glimpse of a sparkle in their eye when they realize the new PCS isn't a joke... no fooling. However moving to Florida means swimming in the Gulf of New Mexico on Christmas Day which isn't a bad idea either. Now come the flowers: and the truth that blooming where you are planted is the best advice to grow and gain confidence. Want to help your military child? Explore avenues of interest that challenge, support and create ...

April is Month of the Military Child
2008-04-02 14:34:00
April is a big month for military families as we recognize the younger part of the family teams that serve their country! Month of the Military Child is celebrated in many ways and you can find events occurring throughout the month at nearby installations!Military kids face many challenges and hurdles as they relocate with their families. From long separations with a deployed parent(s) to an extensive list of schools attended; friends made and then goodbyes spoken (too often for most parents). How many times did we recognize that the friends knew we were leaving as they slowly withdrew from our kids to protect themselves from the pain? But the challenges also bring fun multiplied again and again with new areas seen, lived in and explored! How many American families can say they have been "spranging" in Iceland! Spranging is a unique way to collect eggs from the numerous sea bird nests on the coasts of Iceland. They hang a rope over a cliff and swing down into the bird nests to collec...

Thriller
2008-03-29 14:00:00
Soon I will celebrate the 24th anniversary of my 10th birthday. I know that is a strange way to say that yes, I am almost 34. But any military-brat can tell you the importance of that 10th birthday. Turning 10 meant independence, empowerment, growing-up; it was a big deal! It was the day I could get my Military ID Card! It was a yellow card with a hole and a chain that I could hang around my neck. It had an awkward picture of a pre-teen with a curly perm and loads of freckles. It said that I, yes I, had Exchange, MWR, and Commissary privileges. It wasn't a driver's license - but it was the next best thing. At the time we lived on Scott Air Force Base and the BX, Shoppette and Commissary were less then a mile up the road. With this ID Card I could hop on my bike and with my brothers trailing behind we could run quick errands for my mom. Mom might give me a couple of bucks and I could put a gallon of milk bought at the shoppette in my bike's basket; of course I couldn't bypass the ...

A Minute out of the Norm: Go For a Walk
2008-03-26 18:51:00
Today is a much coveted day in March in the Midwest. It is mostly sunny.Don't get me wrong. It's cold. There are still snow-piles throughout the neighborhood from the last snowstorm... but hey, at least we have our sidewalks back! The boys and I were inside feeling rather gloomy. There was a little bit more arguing then usual between the two brothers, a little bit more yelling on my part.So this afternoon for a change of pace we put on our jackets and shoes. My boys grabbed their new rain-boots from the Easter Bunny and we headed outdoors for a walk. I walked and they scooted on their scooters. It raised our blood-pressure, got our hearts pumping and we enjoyed the sounds of new spring birds in the background, the smell of *very* wet grass, the sites of other children also forced out of the house by their mothers, I'm sure. When we got home we walked around the yard to see the bulbs popping out of the ground & then they played together on the neighbor's swing-set for a little b...

New PCS Mileage Rate
2008-03-26 18:13:00
Sometimes things can just be downright confusing when we try to find our way across the country to that next PCS dream spot! Just like this little guy trying to decide which fork to take in the trail!Just as confusing are some of the government decisions on how much to pay us for PCS travel. With the current gas prices going towards $4 a gallon, the PCS mileage rate for your POV (privately owned vehicle) has gone down from $.20 a mile to $.19 a mile effective 1 January 2008. This is according to the latest information from the DoD Per Diem, Travel and Transportation Allowance Committee in a 17 March 2008 memo. According to the memo which I have linked below for your reading pleasure the GSA sets the mileage based on an IRS rate! So someone in the IRS portion of our government must not be driving a car but riding the metro or slugging it in DC.If you do not know what a slug is I will provide a brief explanation: Many folks wait at bus stops and other locations in the DC suburbs for a...

The US Government Wants to send you Money: Or the Economic Stimulus Packa
2008-03-24 16:02:00
Who can't use a few extra dollars for their next PCS, weekend getaway, R and R or down payment for that new family vehicle? Well this spring/summer will see some funding coming into the military communities' pocket books from the IRS in the form of a stimulus payment. If you have not heard or seen about this payment it is part of an economic stimulus package advocated by the President and passed recently by Congress! The first checks should be mailed in May!Who is going to get the rebates and how much is it going to be? To quote from the official IRS website at Economic Stimulus Payments Information Center:"Starting in May, the Treasury will begin sending economic stimulus payments to more than 130 million households. To receive a payment, taxpayers must have a valid Social Security number, $3,000 of income and file a 2007 federal tax return. IRS will take care of the rest. Eligible people will receive up to $600 ($1,200 for married couples), and parents will receive an a...

I was approached before the weekend and asked if I wanted to do the interview and part of me was a bit hesitant, yet, knew in the back of my mind that I was perfectly capable and excited to do it. What a great idea!
2008-03-18 15:44:00
We recently received a great homemade gift from our son Dan and his wife Becky to commemorate all of those PCS and other associated moves while on active duty! It was a sign post to place in the yard or on the street with all of our previous home locations spelled out with the distance in air miles to each from our current home! What fun it is to see the sign and realize all that it means. Each little sign indicates an American military family gathering its belongings, cleaning up a house, selling one on occasion or passing a base housing inspection on another! It also means saying goodbye to so many friends and co-workers and meeting new ones! It also meant new schools, new jobs and new experiences! From Panama to Iceland to Washington state to the Pentagon to Florida and Nevada with many stops in between! It meant more than a million miles in vehicles that we wore out. Many fond memories and some scary ones, too. Like the 15 year old with a learner's permit driving cross c...

A Minute out of the Norm: Paint some Easter Decorations
2008-03-17 17:46:00
I thought I would start a new 'department' here on "Our Letters to You". I find with my husband gone for long periods of time I'm always looking to 'shake things up a bit'. It's when our routine becomes too routine that we really miss his presence.I'm no Martha Stewart but as I come up with new ideas that we did just to change the routine by 5 to 10 minutes I would like to share them with you. So without further ado I present our first "Minute s out of the Norm".Today my boys and I painted Easter Eggs; Not the real kind of eggs ... the paper kind. I'm a big fan of 'stock paper'. It's not flimsy & when it is on sale I usually grab a stack for crafty things. So I cut out a few "eggs" and presented my preschool age children with paint brushes and water colors. (We bought a stack of them at the beginning of school when they were on sale so I always have plenty on hand.)They went to town painting & showing me each new one they colored. I even got into it and painted two...

Spring Clean Up and the Joy of a Swing
2008-03-10 15:35:00
The time zone change this weekend messed up my schedule and body clock big time! But it says spring is rapidly approaching and I am certainly ready for that after record snowfalls and global cooling this winter. One of my favorite recreation activities to do with my kids when they were growing up and now my grandkids is to swing together or push them or do an under dunker. Now where did that name come from? Maybe because you are under the swing and someone usually gets smacked in the head or dumped off the swing. With spring almost here I look outside and cheer for the trees to bud and flowers to pop up so we can get outside and get some spring projects done around the house. We had family members who wanted to sell their house last year and needed a "tune up" to give it some added marketing appeal. So one spring weekend friends and family showed up with paint brushes, shovels, hammers, buckets and numerous other tools! We had almost a dozen folks at work and it was so much fun t...

It is wonderful to be able to say "Thank You"
2008-03-10 00:00:00
Ohio got walloped this weekend. The snow started on Friday morning and didn't let up until Saturday night. There were moments when I could not see across the street & it brought back fond (or maybe not-so-fond) memories of our time at Keflavik NAS, Iceland as most of the snow fell 'sideways'. I would have loved this storm if it was January, but snow storms that hit us in March just try my patience. What I least looked forward to as I watched the weather forecast was keeping the driveway shoveled. That is Paul's job when he is home. I do love getting outside & I am no weakling. I have actually become much stronger after having kids. It is quite a workout to keep up with them! But every time I shovel I am sore for the next two days. I work very carefully to not strain my back but usually the pain is in my shoulders. So as the weather-man kept repeating the forecast on Thursday night all I could do was groan with pain at even the thought of what was to come. The sound of snow...

A New Way to Connect
2008-03-07 22:35:00
I haven't contributed to the "Letters to You" blog before today, but I'm excited to do so! I joined the MilitaryAvenue team in early 2008 and it has been fun to jump into a new and exciting project. If you are reading this blog, you are probably familiar enough with the Internet to have at least heard of Facebook. It has gained some popularity and success over the past couple of years - roughly 65 million users with an average of 250,000 new users signing up each day! That's exciting for the people at Facebook, but what did it mean for us at MilitaryAvenue? In mid 2007, Facebook created the Facebook Developer's Platform. It allows developers to create applications that take advantage of Facebook's user authentication and vast amount of social information. Facebook already helps friends, past and present, connect and share photos, messages, and information about one's life. However, most of these connections assume that you either went to the same high school, the same college, ...
