Bali:Heart of Asia
2007-04-04 12:57:00 "They who give have all things; they who withhold have nothing" Hindu SageThere may be hundreds of ways to save this world and Bali is one of them. Yeah, I know, this is a travelogue but sometimes the road less travelled may hold the secrets of the universe, grasshopper. And Bali`s secrets run deeper than the obvious. The obvious are the lush and tropical forests, rice paddies rippling down hillsides like a painting, volcanoes touching the clouds and beaches that call the Indian Ocean paradise. It`s 8 degrees south of the equator and it is hot but the ocean breezes and mountainous inland slay the heat. You really won`t need air con at night. Tropical and beautiful but that`s not the story. The story is the people! Wayan (first born) guides us through his country showing us all that is beautiful and all that is not. Wayan speaks 3 languages. He is a travel guide, historian and ambassador for his Bali and worth every cent we pay for the spiritual insight he sells. You ... More About: Asia , Hear , Heart

Starving for Ethanol
2007-04-02 03:48:00 " There is a sufficiency in the world for man's need but not for man's greed" GandhiSometimes what looks like a truth can become a mess of corporate interest and a pile of ecological shite! i.e. Ethan ol seemed like a good idea for a minute or two but it may be more complicated than we need. (price of grain) Hungry people of the world depend on grain for their most basic needs and the price of this grain is being driven higher by the "biofuel" market. It does seem a little pathetic when supermarkets and service stations are competing for the grain supply and the prices are rising for people who have little else to eat. And now countries like Indonesia are cutting palm trees down for the palm oil biofuel that is considerably worse for global warming than methane! (read Monbiot) Palm oil is actually 10 times worse for climate change than petroleum. Crazy but true as the deforestation of Indonesia runs rampant for a global warming bu... More About: Star , Ving
Peacemaker
2007-04-01 19:36:00 "The grim fact is that we prepare for war like precocious giants, and for peace like retarded pygmies. The choice, however, is as clear now for nations as it was once for the individual: peace or extinction" Lester B. Pearson As usual, my fuzzy thinking is often inspired by the rants of a friend. This friend was adamant that Canada is pretty much an embarrassment in the world theatre and that the US role is misunderstood and unappreciated? Whew! That lights my fire though its riddled with some truth and some not! And then I settle into my own disappointment in Canada`s lack of direction in helping to solve the world`s peace problems. We need to do so much more. Or at least something. My friend continues that I`m a dreamer, Canada is insignificant and that the only hope for the free world is the greatest nation on earth. Guess who? But I struggle with the fact that the US has been the undisputed heavy weight champion of the world since 1991. Sure I wouldn`... More About: Peace , Maker , Make
Gods of War
2007-03-28 17:49:00 "The evil that men may do never expresses all that he is. Non-violence is a wager, not so much on the goodness of humanity, as on its infinite complexity" Robert InchaustiThe war drums have been beating for a good while now as we face the usual rationalizations (endless media convulsions) to battle evil in this world as defined by Cheney and Bush. In Canada, this means that Prime Minister "Steve" will posture (that's kiss ass) for George W. and dive into whatever chaos that the Cheney government will orchestrate. And they have been orchestrating this war with Iran for some time. It won`t be too long before we get to view a "dog and pony show" much like they performed for the UN to justify war in Iraq. And it won`t matter if they convince anyone because the contrary "rule of pre-emption" will apply. International law be damned, Cheney`s dick is pointing at more oil and his fantasy of Western civilization is... More About: God , War , Gods
Sharkwater
2007-03-27 05:01:00 "Be the change you want to see in the world" GandhiOk picture this! A man free diving among schools of sharks as if he is one of them. He feeds them, he plays with them, he appreciates them and he is willing to risk his freedom for them. Shite! Are these the same animals that Benchley and Spielberg vilified in "Jaws" 30 years ago? Are these the same monsters that have stirred panic in the average TV watching man and woman ever since?Watch "Shark water" just once and walk away wondering about the world we live in. I`m not kidding. This is fodder for reflection on the nature of the beast. And the beast is us, not the shark. This documentary-movie, produced and directed by Rob Stewart, delivers karma on the high seas. It is a story of a man`s quest to help us understand the truth behind the media bound horrible myths of "the shark". And it brings truth and thrills in a really terrific piece of entertainment. Damn the Truth:Hot Air for Sale
2007-03-22 13:49:00 "Live like you will die tomorrow and learn like you will live forever" Gandhi Sometimes I think, in those lazy moments when I`m reading my favorite newspaper, that these writers might have an agenda? Get real! That can`t be. The Free Press is a cornerstone of modern Democracy! Then I feel like those 2 guys in the 3 stooges who are getting slapped all the time and come to my senses. If it`s the truth you`re looking for in your newspaper, it won`t be obvious and it will be crushed by the weight of dollars and shite. Big surprise? And so the story goes.I`m moved to rant on this obvious problem by a recent column "called Climate under fire", in the Canadian Press, by "Salim Mansur". Salim joins the select ranks of reporters who specialize in misleading the average reader on "Climate Science". The lament of his column is a British television production called the "Great Global Warming Swindle&quo... More About: Truth , For Sale , Sale , Damn , Ruth
Homeless in Paradise
2007-03-18 00:22:00 "Compassion is the radicalism of our time" Dalai LamaThe Record, a Waterloo Ontario newspaper, reported on Feb.1 2007 that a prominent downtown property had been sold. It would just be another real estate deal except that this property had been destined to become subsidized housing for the cities homeless. The homeless plan fell through for lack of funding. This is real confusing coming from a city that in a June 9, 2006 media release celebrated its placement, by The Intelligent Communities Forum (ICF), as one of the top 7 "intelligent communities" in the world. Sure this victory exemplifies development of a prosperous economy based on Broadband and Information Technology but the thing is their "prosperous economy"! As Mayor Herb Epp stated, "There is continuous job creation, and a continuous focus by municipal government and by all of the sectors on moving forward and on continually enhancing this intelligent community.&rd... The Great Green North?
2007-03-12 19:04:00 "It may be true that the government that governs best governs least. Unfortunately, the same is also true of the government that governs worst " Jane AuerI get a little excited when a politician starts to make sense and there`s a hint of possibility in the air. This is a Canadian poitician who I want to believe. He`s all about economic and environmental balance! I hope this is a sign of more to come in the the "great green north"? Read his latest blog. Its promising. And another link to where this kind of thinking might lead. More About: Green , Great , North , The G
Karmageddon
2007-03-10 02:00:00 "A dream that became a reality and spread throughout the stars..." James T. Kirk As I travel or "messenger" friends around the globe, the story is too familiar. Droughts in Thailand ( the government talks of seeding the clouds to bring on the rain) or Australia (ongoing 6 years of drought for Aussies), winds, cold and rain in Hawaii, devastating wind storms mowing down trees in Vancouver`s Stanley Park, record high temperatures in summer of North America and severe heat waves are becoming more common in Europe. This is just people talking and me listening. More anecdotal than scientific but the scientific community is piling on with enough concern to ring the bells of "karmageddon" around the world. Now stories of climate change consequences are getting media attention on a level that gave "eco-activists" wet dreams not long ago. Climate science is sexy. Thanks to Al Gore. He may be rich and he may be a politician (these seem the best complai... More About: Karma , Armageddon , Arma
Dangerous Ideas or Real Solutions
2007-03-05 19:24:00 "I hope it is true that a man can die and yet not only live in others but give them life, and not only life but a great consciousness of life" Jack KerouacI came across this timely feed from the Oregon Public broadcasting System that interviews, discusses and follows some fascinating ideas for transforming the crazy world we live in. Very hopeful and proactive but includes straight talk and views of karma issues that need to be considered. The first part is an interview with Thomas Homer-Dixon on his views and solutions for troubled times; and the second part is an excerpt from a coming Documentary "Black Gold" on the coffee trade. This is very good! Watch foreignexchange! More About: Ideas , Idea , Anger , Danger , Real
Can an Old Hippy affect Global Warming?
2007-03-02 04:53:00 "The oxen are slow, but the earth is patient". A Sage Terence Corcoran, editor of the Financial Post in Canada, thinks "global warming" is nonsense and purely a fantasy of the radical left, (i.e. Gore, Suzuki) but after all he`s a financial editor and his scientific credentials are not very scientific. Though apparently he and Jerry Falwell may have attended the same science courses? Jerry thinks Gore is an "old hippy" and that science is for Satan. So it must concern Corcoran that Big Business, in large numbers, are starting to believe in the science of "global warming". The Global Roundtable on Climate Change (a who`s who in International business that includes Suncor) has issued a statement regarding a "Path to Climate Sustainability" that offers acceptance of the scientific probability that man induced Climate Change is likely and that steps need to be taken to counter high levels of CO2 emissions. Bush-Lite by Stephen Harper
2007-02-28 01:07:00 "Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children. This is not a way of life at all in any true sense. Under the clouds of war, it is humanity hanging on a cross of iron. " ~Dwight D. EisenhowerAfter 24 days of Fiji (Bula baby) I`ve come home to find that our Prime Minister, Stephen Harp er, is still an American wanabe in Bush drag. And that means that our Prime Minister`s sphincter still throbs in spiritual pain with every gay marriage we endorse in this great country of ours. That`s "Steve" as George W likes to call him and now that he lost his moral crusade on same sex (sounds a little Republican American?) he is waving his moral dick at... Monbiot and Bali
More articles from this author:2007-01-27 19:05:00 "My fault, my failure, is not in the passions that I have, but in my lack of control of them." Jack KerouacIf you haven`t read George Monbiot, then be very careful. Once you start you may want to run and hide. He attacks our conscience. He strips inane rationalization for the good life to its visceral core. Monbiot is relentless (read his columns), though honest about his own failings, in well researched arguments for wholesale change in the way our developed world middle class, me and you, work and play.Monbiot reasons that the transition needs to come to save our planet from "Global Warming." Read his latest book "Heat" for his bitter truth . And after Gore`s "an Inconvenient Truth" and Monbiot I can`t justify some of my playtime. So I`ll do my best to gently walk the earth, but hence comes my dilemma!Monbiot is singularly ruthless in his condemnation of "air travel" and his reasoning that air traffic is a huge contributor to the d...
