50 cars = 1 bus
2009-05-12 10:37:00
Every day thousands of Swedes take their car to the Stockholm Airport. In an attempt to get them to take the bus, ad-company Acne created for bus company Flygbussarna* this statement: a bus made from 50 flattened cars. The 50 cars figure is based on the amount of people in those cars the Flygbussarna company stated, that 1 of their buses also could take to the airport: 50 cars equal 1 bus. The bus ad caused traffic jams and was reported in traffic jam notifications on the news. Not only plays the Flygbussarna the traffic jam card, there is also the CO2-pollution, the bus only pollutes equal to 4 cars. Flygbussarna goes even further. On their website a web-cam connection could be seen. The cam is installed the other side of the highway, looking at the ad bus and the cars passing by. The moving image is connected to senors which count the passing cars and with some math Flygbussarna shows how much CO2 could have been reduced. barge converted into hostel
2009-05-12 10:36:00
Ecohostel Andromeda is an ecological hostel on a barge in Ghent. Price-conscious sleeping, but with all the qualities of a hotel! 'Eco' refers to the underlying ideas of the hostel, both ecological and economical. Because the construction is a low-energy concept, because the interior and energy supply is approached in an ecological way and most important, because the location is an old barge, saved from scrap by converting it to a hostel. Economic because we try to offer a low-budget accommodation, without compromising comfort. » origina l news

Festival center KFDA09
2009-05-08 16:18:00
Rotor has designed an ambitious project for Les Brigittines. With only modest means at their disposal, this Brussels collective has entirely revamped the arts centre Les Brigittines. A spacious mezzanine is built in the hall, offering visitors a surprising view of the arts centre itself and the railway line, while an impressive terrace stretches out at the entrance of the building. Since the festival centre is a temporary installation, they have opted for a design that takes into account the future destination of the materials used in its creation. They work with rented prefab elements used as formwork in the building industry, and different kinds of wood waste are used for finishings, for instance melaminated chipboard from unmarketable furniture was used as flooring. In this way, the large structures will leave hardly any supplementary waste after the festival. eight screws
2009-05-05 23:58:00
The wood waste used in this design comes from a company that rents materials for making formwork. Because of the intensive use, some of the beams will be damaged when returning to inventory afterwards. These beams are subsequently cut to smaller but also standardised lengths. In this way, damaged beams are re-used for less demanding applications, but the entropy of the beam considered as a thermodynamic system is limited to the very minimum. The off-cuts and other wood-waste are normally recycled by a third party in the production of chipboard. We used those damaged off-cuts or too short beams to build 30 seats for a terrace outside. We cut them to a standard length of half a meter. Only 8 screws transform the beam-fragments in a seat. These screws will in no way hamper future recycling to chipboard, a fate that will probably befall the seats in a couple of years. » ;original news
Train dump
2009-04-30 02:26:00
NIJMEGEN - And suddenly they were there. Dozens of discarded trains of the Dutch Railways. The yard of Nijmegen Central station is fuller than ever. The trains have been endorsed by the Dutch Railways and are based in Nijmegen, pending their use, sale, rental or final demolition. How long the trains will remain there, is not known. There is also no specific reason given by the Duth railways on why they have ended up in Nijmegen. So the only one we can think of is that there was enough place on their yard ...... » origin al news

La Carbonera - Drap'Art
2009-04-28 13:59:00
Drap-Art is a non-profit organization founded in Barcelona in 1995, with the aim of promoting creative recycling through the organization of festivals, exhibitions and workshops. Drap-Art initiated its activities in 1996 with the Creative Recycling Marathon of Barcelona, a 24 hour non-stop event of live creation, which in its second edition attracted about 20.000 visitors. In the same year Drap-Art also organized the Recykl Art Fest at the Biennale of Montenegro, an interchange between Yugoslavian artists and artists from Barcelona. This experience inspired the itinerant exhibition Evil Empire and two interchange workshops Tell me what you throw away and I'll tell you who you are, in Jerusalem in 1998 with Israeli and Barcelona based artists and in Barcelona in 1999, with the participation French, Greek, Brazilian and Barcelona based artists. Drap-Art also collaborated in establishing similar marathons in Andorra, in 1997 and Athens in 1998 and in Berlin in 2002. At the moment Dra...

Introducing: Alet Brouwer
2009-02-23 00:34:00
Alet Brouwer is an haute couture accessory maker, she creates bags, belts, purses, guitar-belts from materials that other people would consider waste. Or as she put's it: 'I use everything I can get a hole in.' A couple of weeks ago, at the Dutch premiere of Slumdog Millionaire at the Filmfestival of Rotterdam, I was introduced to Alet Brouwer by a mutual friend. She carried an interesting bag, made from a combination of an inner tube from a truck tire and a heavy duty belt. Alet told me that she made that herself. Alet and the bag raised so much questions that she agreed upon answering them at a later time. This took place couple of weeks later in Rotterdam, in her house and (sometimes) atelier. Alet has only just begun making bags. Recovering from an illness last summer, she suddenly had more time at hand and also some nerve to explore creative territories. As a child Alet found out that having a creative and very associative mind, meant for other people, that she was a bit...
Clog On The Wall
2009-02-23 00:34:00
'Now my clog is breaking*' is a typical dutch expression, it is said when someone is heavily surprised. One can imagine, that breaking a shoe is not very convenient. Because a pair of wooden shoes have to be warn out at the same time, the unbroken other one, is left (or right) over. And thus, since the early days of the clog, the remaining one, is nailed against the wall, where it can rest it days to host flowers. Rotor wants your cassettes
2009-02-20 00:23:00
Rotor is looking for audio-cassettes and you can help. You remember those mix-tapes you used to receive from friends? Or the recorded radio-shows you heard over and over, the musical stories your parents played in the car to keep you sweet? Maybe you even had a fancy 'auto-reverse' walk-man and you taped your own songs? With the dawn of the digital age, music has almost completely dematerialized. As a tribute to what has been, Rotor wants to collect a large quantity of cassettes and use them in a audio-project. You can help us with that. For every 60 working cassettes (with sound on them, off course), we offer you a new look at things and a Mega-Vision screen. The screen is another high-tech product from the eighties. It's a 55 by 70 cm large fresnel lens in an elegant steel frame, designed as a magnifier for small television sets. You could probably still use it for that, but it's also just a very cool toy to play with. You can drop of your cassettes in our office (Rue de L...
MAKEA (tu vida)
2009-02-18 21:28:00
MAKEA is an alternative to the culture of "use and throw". In today's consumer society, brands are any word, name, symbol or object that is used to identify and distinguish the articles of a producer to that of their competitors. And give the product a personality and an image that makes us dependent on it. But MAKEA is a brand that does not sell anything, it represents an attitude of resistance. MAKEA is the collective creativity and intelligence, which turns back into useful things that the society of consumerism has neglected. Is to rebuild the motto "do it yourself" (haztelo tu mismo), to prolong the useful life of products, know-how and break back with the "empty" comfort that the society of consumerism is selling us in boxes. » ori ginal news

australian reuse
2009-02-11 22:17:00
The Crago Mill in Newtown, on the western fringe of Sydney's inner city, has landmark structures that are significant heritage survivors of a period when flour milling was dominated by large city mills alongside railway lines. The concrete silos and a tall complex of timber storage bins were originally used for the storage of grain. This project converts these structures into residential use with associated open space. A new lower-rise structure provides additional apartments alongside the refurbished heritage buildings. All new work is clearly articulated, and the retained potions will be restored in such a way that the three buildings form a coherent and functional whole. The project has been developed to retain the industrial qualities, scale and aesthetics of the existing complex. The three buildings will accommodate 59 apartments over 14 levels. The existing ground-level bases of the historic silos and bins have architecturally impressive timber and concrete structural forms...

Bob clothes hanger
2009-02-10 01:50:00
Designer Joan Nadal took on the challenge to re-design one of the most common everyday objects: the humble clothes hanger. A small object with a large environmental footprint if we consider that of the 8 billion polystyrene or polycarbonate hangers manufactured per year, only 15% are recycled. That is enough to fill the Empire State Building 4 times! The solution: make recyclable hanger from just one material, and if you can, recycle something along the way. BoB Hanger does exactly that: it's made from recycled cardboard and needs two reused bottles to function. BoB stands for Bottle » o riginal news

Pet Bottle Rocket
2009-02-08 03:21:00
With a couple of Pet-bottles, a (bike-)pump, tape, cardboard and some tools (and water) it is possible to construct your very own Pet Bottle Water Rocket . According to Wikipedia, this is how it works: 1) Compressed air is added to the fuselage which creates a bubble which floats up through the water and then pressurizes the air volume in the top of the bottle. 2) The bottle is released from the pump. 3) The water is pushed out the nozzle by the compressed air. 4) The bottle moves away from the water because it follows Newton's Third Law: For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. In 2007 the current altitude record for water rockets was set in the USA: 630m. But be care full, a water rocket is the real deal, that means that Newton works in other ways as well. The bottle can burst and what goes up, must come down. Pet Bottle Rocket (since ....) Champagne Chair
2009-02-07 03:12:00
Champagne is a sparkling white wine which is associated with luxury and power. The mushroom shaped cork should be removed gently and not be shot to heaven. Besides an argument of spilling the champagne, there is also the argument of spilling the cork. On this bottle plug one can now project all it's creativity for making a chair and maybe some champagne could even help. The champagne chair competition is organized by Design Notes. On their site one can see chairs made from just the cork or the wire and both. Design and/or cast your vote! Cigar Box Ukulele
2009-02-04 14:39:00
Around the end of the Civil War folks in the South didn't have much, but the cigarbox had come into being and it was a widely available item which could easily be transformed into many useful things and even into a stringed instrument. Nearly everyone could get their hands on a box, a broom handle and a few strings or wire. From these materials people would fashion an instrument as well as their know-how would allow. With this in mind, i made a Cigarbox Ukulele out of found & given (with a bit of coaxing) materials. Bumf Tables
2009-01-30 01:10:00
This is a series of tables made exclusively out of junk mail, and only junk mail delivered to the artist house. During peak mail season around Christmas one of these can be created with about 5 days worth of junk mail. The top is a pulped mail pressed into a mold and the legs are magazine rolls strapped together with rubber bands (bundling the mail delivery). Currently there are three standing versions each about 30" high and a coffee table in the works. The namesake 'Bumf' is the Scottish slang for trash.
