Cubed Cars Wall

The Douglas DC-3 is a fixed-wing, propeller-driven aircraft whose speed and range revolutionized air transport in the 1930s and 1940s. Because of its lasting impact on the airline industry and World War II, it is generally regarded as one of the most significant transport aircraft ever made. Christiania Glass House
2008-01-25 10:31:00
'christiania, copenhagen's autonomous favela, has just been given a new lease of life by the Danish government. no buildings will be torn down in the next year while negotiations on future developments continue. the fine examples of a modern &quot;architecture without architects&quot; like this glass house are safe for now. but christiania's troubles are many and cannot be reduced to the hostile attitude held by our right wing government. what was initially a squatters' community has become a permanent settlement. it has been called a flawed experiment but the truth of the matter is that the experiment is over and has been for many years. the rich cultural life that sent out subversive theatre groups into the 'real' world is long gone. the brilliant santa army happening of 1974 when large numbers of fake santas doled out goods from the shelves to christmas shoppers in copenhagen department stores would make little sense today: christiania is every bit as comfortably ...

Container Corridor
2008-01-20 20:44:00
Next to most car roads in the Netherlands we have special bike paths. We like segregation, so everybody is sort of free, in his own zone. But don't cross it, because we'd than make verbally clear to get back into that zoned area. At the same time, for ourselves however, we like to cross the lines. Rules are for others. We are and want to be the exception. So, than there was this problem of demolishing a building near the bike path. It was impossible off course to make somebody get of their bike and go walking onto the pedestrian area. Dutch people never step of their bike. So, the demolisher was smart and put two containers onto the path, making some sort of safe corridor. A protection against huge pieces of heavy debris. I'm wondering though, who opens the doors each morning. Reverse Graffiti
2008-01-16 14:48:00
Brazilian artist Alexandre Orion demonstrates against pollution by cleaning the soot (roet) away in car tunnels. A cleaning towel is his brush by which he makes clear lines into the sooted surfaces, creating his art: 'I'm cleaning, and cleaning is not graffiti. It is not a crime. Polluting is a crime. What I'm trying to show is thats a crime there. I'ts not my crime. It is all our crime. It is an universal crime.' The text is an extract from the VPRO tv-show In De Ban Van Het Ding, a small clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cXkNHg1ZdC E In the following video Alexandre is making the actual graffiti in the tunnel. The clip also shows how that is appreciated by local authority: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JwsBBIIXT0 E&amp;NR=1 After the cleaning Alexandre takes home the towels, damps out the water and extracts the soot. He than mixes the soot with an acrylic based medium, to make paint out of it. This sootpaint is than used to again makes pieces, but now on canvas. ...

sad story in Steenwijk
2008-01-15 10:54:00
an amazing story is developing in the north of Holland where a dutch architect realised his dreamhouse with lowtech means most materials were recuperated and locally avilable and all means were taken to produce a sustainable, low energy house. The house was finished one and a half year later than the contract with the authorities allowed for and it was claimed the house has not been built completely by the plans that were checked. especcially not fully obeying the so called 'bouwbesluit' made the steenwijk counsil decide to order the ground back and have the house demolished. This ofcourse is an enormous waste of both human, material and financial energy, the architect has lost all legal cases so far and it seems the demolishing will soon take place. on the website of Jan Husslage one can support his effforts to keep his house but it seems a miracle has to occur in order to change this absurd turn in Dutch history. http://solvir.web-log.nl/  » <a href='1'>...

Software bag
2008-01-12 01:54:00
from evil mad scientist: Vintage software documentation often comes in 6&quot; x 9&quot; three ring binders which are just the right size for a small handbag. Many of them are cloth bound, making them ideal for reuse. Tech surplus stores such as Weird Stuff are good places to look for interesting covers, like this Pepper Graphics user's guide from Number Nine. With the addition of a fabric liner and handles it has become an excellent geek purse.  » <a href='http://www.evilmadscientist.com/art icle.php/softwarehandbag'>original news</a>

Capital Reuse
2008-01-10 08:40:00
Since the end of September 2007, the demolishing of the Central Station of Rotterdam has started. The building (1957) was designed by architect Sybold van Ravesteyn. Peter Hopman en Margien Reuvekamp of Bureau Lakenvelder made the ode TRAAN LATEN (to shed a tear). The capitals are an anagram of CENTRAAL STATION on the roof of the main station hall. The neon types stay there until the destruction of the hall. Next to TRAAN LATEN, also possible TOT LATER (until later) or LATEN STAAN (leave it). TRAAN LATEN or Shed A Tear, since there is also no further sign of reuse. Innertube lamp
2008-01-08 22:49:00
from the author: EN While we have seen several attempts of soft light shades, InnerTube really interrogates the relationship between a material and its application. In this case, the soft and flexible rubber shade is maintained in shape by the light source itself. In effect, the black shade is stretched around the circle glass tube, creating an unusual void in its center, while diffusing a large contrasting white aura of light. Contact between the two elements is also made possible as the tube remains warm.  » <a href='http://www.sylvainwillenz.com/'> original news</a>

Cardboard house
2008-01-06 14:34:00
The Cardboard House represents the reduction of technology and the simplification of needs. By demonstrating that we are able to recycle 100% of the building components at extremely low cost, the Cardboard House is a direct challenge to the housing industry to reduce housing and environmental costs. A cardboard house places the least demand on resources and encourages people to shift their preconceptions about the &quot;typical Australian house&quot;. Many Australians enjoy camping on their holidays, easily shifting their lifestyle from the rigidity of the urban home to the freedom of the campsite. Being extremely low cost and transportable, the Cardboard House could be used in a wide variety of applications. You could live in one while your permanent house is being built or renovated, for emergency housing, or for short-term accommodation. http://www.housesofthefuture.com.au/hof_h ouses04.html#designconcept  » <a href='http://www.housesofthefuture.com.a. ..

So, now you'r living in your airplane house. To host all your bikes the (balcony) wings are formidable carports. Or possible you have a Winy Maas* or Moller** skycar than you could even park it on top. But still, sometimes you need some space to do stuff, not all work can be done in the comfort of that home. Like work on your vintage helicopter. So, you fly back to the aircraft scrap yard. And look what they got, a chunk of 747 fuselage. Perfect. Trabant nest
2007-12-31 15:21:00
On a nice day in November 1989, suddenly Die Mauer was opened. Television camera's showed images of the East-West border in Berlin. It seemed that an endless row of East-Germans came through in their wobbly and smoking Trabant s. The car became one of the icons of that day, of that moment. Which, ultimately, led to the Wende, a complete change of the political climate. The current climate has become as such that from tomorrow onwards, the first of January, the 2008 Berlin, forbids Trabants to drive along the city, because they cannot live up the stricter environmental regulations. Someone in Neureuppin must have somehow wanted to make a statement about some ostalgic things and put the car up a pole, with a roof rack. A couple of storks got the message, build a huge nest and started a family. Click on the picture to seem them upclose. The car could be up there for a while since the body is made of plastic called Duroplast: a mixture from phenolraisin with cottonfibres. Trabant sto...
