Pole Helmet
2007-12-31 09:49:00
Along the Nieuwe Waterweg at Vlaardingen a creative horse farmer found a new way to deal with some of the trash washing ashore the bank near his land. When there are severe winds from the South-West, a gust can detach construction helmets from sailors heads and blows them into the water and eventually sails them onto the northern shore. Here the farmer picked them up and nailed them onto his fence poles, which stand almost within an arm length. By doing that he not only he cleared the embankment, well sort of, he also made the poles more durable. The helmets protect them from rain pounding directly into the head of the wood. The diverse colours make it a pretty picture, as well. Unknown horse-farmer Fence pole protection and decoration (ongoing project) Construction helmets Nieuwe Waterweg, Vlaardingen-Noord, The Netherlands Picture by the author, who happend to drive by, today. » original news

Soviet Cosmic Experience
2007-12-31 09:49:00
In 1976 the Soviet Union started to develop the reusable spacecraft Buran. The project was the largest and the most expensive in the history of Soviet space exploration. Though the Buran might look somewhat similar to NASA's Space Shuttle, features differ. The first and only orbital launch of a (unmanned) Buran was on November 15, 1988. After the first flight, the project was suspended due to lack of funds and the changed political climate in the Soviet Union. The project was officially terminated on June 30, 1993 by President Boris Yeltsin. Part of the Buran shuttle developingprocess were a number of testmodels and mock-ups. This specific Buran used to be a structural test vehicle to messure loads and stresses, heating and vibration. It now rests his days in the small entertainment park Gorky in Moscow. Here kids can visit it as 'Cosmic Experience ' movietheatre: a Soviet dream reused to inspire new dreamers. Cosmic Experience, movietheatre NPO Molniya, Buran, # 015, OK-TVA (ca...
Bomber Gas
2007-12-31 09:49:00
Bomber Gas has been a landmark in the Portland area since 1947, when it arrived and became the region's most unusual filling station. It stopped operating as a gas station in 1991, and has since been associated with the adjacent Bomber Drive-Inn restaurant, where visitors can grab a, as the owners put it, 'Classic American' bite and a souvenir Bomber placemat. The Bomber Gas is made from a Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress, type G. Shortly after the war Art Lacey went to Kansas to buy a surplus B-17. His idea was to fly it back to Oregon, jack it up in the sky and make a gas station underneath. He laid down $15,000 and asked which one was his to take. The military replied take whichever you want because there were miles of them. Lacey didn't know how to fly a 4 engine airplane so he read the manual whilst taxing around. The military said Lacey couldn't take off by himself so he put a mannequin in the co-pilot's seat and off he went. He flew around a bit to get the feel of it and ...

'The fastest home in the housing industry' is the claim put out by Max Power Aerospace, Inc. Formed in 1998, the company's primary business is salvaging retired airliners for their parts. Tom Bennington, Max Power's president and a former 727 captain, loves to talk about building houses out of Boeing airliners. The company now has a patent on its 727 house design, which can be set up on land, in a lake or even in the ocean. An airplane's structure is built to carry up to 189 people at over 920 km/h and in temperatures of -60 degrees Celcius. It can safely protect you through any winds, even hurricane force winds. THe amount of energy to heat and cool it is minimal. The patent concerns a wind-resistant habitable dwelling, which includes the fuselage of an aircraft rotatably mounted on a single support column. The vertical tail fin is kept to allow the dwelling to pivot on the column and point in the direction of the prevailing wind, exactly like a wind vane would. The fusela...
Little Trump
2007-12-31 09:49:00
In 1994 Jo Ann Ussery found herself in the market for a new home. A huge storm in winter made huge trees loaded with ice, fall on her 1400 square foot wood-frame house, nearly flattening it. When she was looking for a mobile home, her brother-in-law Bob Farrow, an air traffic controller at Greenwood Airport, suggested she might look for a retired jetliner. After all, she didn't live very far from the airport in Greenwood, where one of the premier aircraft salvage companies in the business regularly parted out airliners. (what company) Ussery paid a visit to the Memphis Group, where Richard Cordle, the Greenwood facility manager, took her on a tour. Upon seeing the scrapped Continental Airlines 727, she responded, "I want it; how much?" It took several months to get the aircraft released. When it was available, she paid $2,000. Transportation cost another $4.000. To make it into her dream home another $24.000 were spent. Armed with a borrowed 9/16 wrench and a scr...

Temporary separation
2007-12-31 09:49:00
The assignment was to visually separate an existing space from a hallway. Our solution had to be temporary, be modular, and use a very low budget. For this, we used leftovers of agricultural textile (composed of aluminium, cotton and poly-ethylene), and disqualified adhesive tape. Floating Penthouse

In 1938 billionaire Howard Hughes shattered the around-the-world flight record in a twin-engined Lockheed Super Electra. In an attempt to break his own record he bought a Boeing 307 Stratoliner. The 307 was world's first commercial pressurized aircraft, a variant of the B-17 Flying Fortress bomber. Hughes prepared the 307 with extra fuel tanks. The project came to a end with the outbreak World War II, for that reason the production of the 307 also came to a hold. Only ten where made. The government tried to obtain the aircraft for military purposes but Hughes denied he had it and kept hidden in parts. In 1948 Hughes commissioned Raymond Loewy, to rebuild the interior. Actress Rita Hayworth gave some tips. The billionaire invested a quarter of a million dollars changing the 307's interior into one that included a master bedroom, two bathrooms, a galley, living room and stand-up bar. Behind the bar three windows cut out bar so that Hayworth could look out of the "Flying Pe...

48 Hangers
2007-12-28 11:13:00
South Korea-based collective 101 Design Studio has devised a clever way to recycle hangers into pretty slick-looking lights. Lamps are available in two versions the "48 Hanger" and "48 Stand". As the name suggests the lights use 48 discarded wire hangers to create a very modern shape an almost eye-wink reminiscent to the a traditional lampshade whitout the cover. OMD- ecolab
2007-12-27 11:19:00
The mobile ECO LAB was built in collaboration with the Hollywood Beautification Team, a grassroots group founded with the mission to restore beauty and integrity to the Hollywood community. Design and construction work was based around a donated cargo truck trailer and cast-offs from film sets. The 8' x 35' trailer now travels throughout Los Angeles County to inform K-12 school-aged children about the importance of saving and protecting our planet. As a working mobile classroom, the ECO LAB provides a base for a range of exhibitions all of which focus on ecology. A multimedia program explaining the "life of a tree" creates a path for discovery that weaves in and out of the space. A working art studio, local artists collaborate with the children to create facade-sized murals replacing graffiti at inner-city schools. School teachers use stage-platforms to discuss each child's role in the importance of planting trees and maintaining a sustainable environment. Like...
PET bottles boat
2007-12-26 18:01:00
Sao Paulo businessman Eduardo Pereira de Carvalho is about to take a two months trip through Sao Francisco River in a boat whose basement is composed by recycled PET bottles. It will be a 1371 kilometres journey through the largest all Brazilian river, which crosses five states. It will start at Pirapora Port, in the state of Minas Gerais, and will end in Juazeiro, state of Bahia. While passing along the cities in between, De Carvalho will offer conferences explaining the importance of recycling and of the conscious use of water; and even showing the kids some gadgets that can be done from PET bottles. As most of the families that live by the river coast are poor, these conferences will serve as a good introduction to environmental awareness. The ship in which he will travel was developed by a naval engineer and has its whole basement built with 2.040 PET bottles... » original news

1959 Cadillac Trunk Seat
2007-12-26 12:12:00
This is the story of the seat and the trunk. It seems that the complete car was crumpled, almost up until it's boot area. What remained was an intact backside and a seat. So fitted together, they make a ride into memory lane, offered you by Route66, surprisingly a Swiss company. This new seat still has its working taillights and it's bubble gum colour making it an object of pure Kitsch. Car furniture like this was also featured in Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction. In an age where everything was jet-inspired, where everything seemed rocket powered and the sky no longer was the limit, the Cadillac Coupe De Ville had the biggest wings of them all. It couldn't fly though, it's V8 power plant only produced 352 hp to boost the 2100 kg metal vessel. It's one of the biggest coupes ever made (5715 mm) and maybe that's why a certain singer, nicknamed The King, called it, his favourite ride. Pleasure Point
2007-12-25 10:42:00
Nancy Rubins has been creating visually stunning sculptures out of salvaged industrial and consumer goods including mattresses, trailers, hot water heaters, airplanes and small appliances since the late 1970s. In her hands, such everyday objects become unfamiliar and astonishing, as they are trussed and finessed into heroic forms that defy both gravity and our expectations for how these things should behave. The sculptures may appear precarious but are, in fact, delicately balanced and precisely engineered. While her works are often read as social commentary on consumer society and technological obsolescence, Rubins is most interested in the formal properties, availability, and utilitarian beauty of the particular items with which she works. As she explains, "When I first starting collecting objects after graduate school, it was the quantity and variety that attracted me--and the idea that I could go to Goodwill and pay fifty cents for a whole carload of televisions with m...

Bottle Houses
2007-12-21 15:27:00
Houses and other structures created predominantly with bottles. For the most part, bottles were used because they were free and easy to work with. Many of the builders speak of a spiritual atmosphere of the buildings' interiors. When the sun hits the bottles, there are said to be kaleidoscopic rays and a stained glass effect. Bottle houses seem to be almost entirely a North American phenomenon. » original news

Newspaper Yarn

Greetje van Tiem, a graduate from the academy's Man and Leisure department, presents her project 'Druk -in, - af' that turns old newspapers into yarn. Like a modern version of Rumpelstilskin, she turns old news into gold: 'A (thread) which comes from a memory. With the opening page of the Newspaper you can spin 20 meters of yarn; the news of today turned into textile (! : SB/Jb). The reels with yarn reflect specific moments from the past, can be turned into different kind of upholstery. The weekend newspaper from a romantic weekend, can end up as a living room curtain; the last week of the world championship soccer (with Dutch participation: SB/Jb) transforms into a carpet with a touch of orange. And when you look closely, here and there a word, or a piece of date. The paper is gone but the memory remains.' Airplane House
2007-12-13 18:19:00
This Boeing 727-200 is a work-in-progress home conversion, undertaken by Bruce Campbell from rural Hillsboro, Oregon. For $100.000 the plane was obtained by the electrical engineer and the estimated costs to make it a house are another $100.000. The aircraft provides 1,066 square feet (100 m2) of living space and near-total resistance to the elements. The house gives him 'A feeling of strength, security, capability and ergonomics that eclipses any other, almost as if you were in a home designed 50 years in the future. Imagine removing all the clutter, such as the seats, the overhead compartments... What's left is an open, ultra high tech home. Besides,' he says, 'it's a great toy.' On his labyrinthic website there is a million of pictures of the work-in-progress, both exterior and interior of jet-house and a cool possibility to build a house out of wide-body 747 jet. He maintains that 'anybody can do it, given desire, luck (acquiring decommissioned plane) and determination.'...

Alco-hologram

A chorus line of corkscrews dancing unison inside an old tube like western style can-can girls. Nemo Gould, an artist, made the Alco-hologram 'a large magnifying screen from an old big screen T.V. diffuses and distorts the scene. It makes the whole thing a bit more dream-like, kind of muddy, the way it would look if you were actually watching it on an old tube television.' 'If you are like me, you have always felt that wine openers look like little people. After finding several of them at the dump, I decided to finally do something about it. I also like this piece because it reminds me that I once wanted to get into stop frame animation. The T.V. cabinet makes the whole thing feel like you are watching a film, a very repetitive film anyway.' Click http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5PEU2Rp7r8 U to watch it move.
