replate.org

Are you the type that never finishes a meal on the go ends up trashing it? Are you also the type that sees people in need of food on the streets asking for pocket change or food? We'll Replate.org's hope is to fix both these problems by bringing awareness of wasting less and helping more. If you have unwanted leftovers on the go, leave it on top of a nearby trashcan rather than in one so it doesn't go to waste. I know this might seem odd at first, but I've countlessly seen people dig through trashcans seeking good edible food. It's somewhat disheartening, but treat it like recycling... It's still usable so help someone out by letting them know. Reduce, reuse, recycle. I've always wondered about grocery stores, fast food joints, restaurants, etc throwing away perfectly good food(I see it alllll the time at grocery stores). I forget where, but I once read/heard that all the food thrown away in the states would be enough food for the 3rd world countries in need. For a brief vid...

Building Paris
2008-06-24 21:35:00
The Netherlands have Madurodam, Denmark has Legoland and now France has got the backyard of Gerard Brion. The 29 year old Frenchmen rebuild Paris in his garden using trash. It took him 15 year to complete the city-centre. Everything is there: Tour de Eiffel, 'l Arc de Triomphe et le Sacre Coeur. He made de buildings, brigdes and cars from concrete blocks, pots and soupcans. His garden in Vaissac is now a tourist attraction. stugbag website launched
2008-06-22 23:44:00
Qenep architects from the hague just launched a new website promoting their colourful bag-collection called Stugbags. The line of bags is made of the discarded rubber mats from printing industry and sewn to a layer of felt. The site allows customers to order one of the unique designs with the producers directly. "A printing blanket is a discarded product from the offset industry made out of a few layers of rubber and canvas. It is extremely durable and strong. We re-use these blankets in their most original character and quality. STUGBAGS are assembled in a way it effectively protects against shocks and rain. The material is upcycled; we give it a new life as a high end product. The materials used for lining and assembly are all natural and of high quality. The felt on the inside is pure wool dyed with non toxic natural pigments. STUGBAGS are products that give waste material a second life, promoting the waste=food principle. STUGBAGS are products with identity. Each b...

Fight Club Soap
2008-06-20 22:55:00
In the movie Fight Club , Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt) comes up with his recipe to make soap. In order to get one mayor basic ingredient, he and Jack (Ewdard Norton) need to go to a liposuction clinic. Tyler: 'The best fat for making soap, because the salt balance is just right, comes from humans.' In the movie we see how the fat is harvested. Plastic see-through bags with the text bio-hazard are obtained from the bins of the clinic and brought to their kitchen on Paper Street. 'Than the fat needs to be rendered on a fire. Now the tallow floats to the surface. After a period in a fridge, where the tallow hardens, you can skim of a layer of glycerin.' Now lye needs to be added to complete the process, Tyler continuous: 'Lye, the crucial ingredient. Ancient peoples found their clothes got cleaner if they washed them at a certain spot in the river. Why? Because, human sacrifices were once made on the hills above this river.Year after year, bodies burnt. Rain fell. Water seeped throug...

hanger lamp
2008-06-19 21:03:00
Next time you pick up your dry cleaning and think about disposing of the hangers, think again- they may have a second life as a gorgeous light fixture. Lighting Designer Ali Siahvoshi has done exactly that with his blue Cascading Hanger Light. This light was featured at 100% Design London this year and, along with his hanging silverware chandeliers, is another stunning example of the Iranian designer's approach to contemporary lighting design, exemplifying the beauty of recycling objects for new purposes. » original news

falafel-oil soap
2008-06-19 20:29:00
APOCALYPSE is a new company founded by industrial designers Petra Lilja and Jenny Nordberg. Based in Malmo, Sweden, they are designing sustainable products and services. The first product, The Soap is made from recycled cooking oil from the numerous Falafel stands around Malmo. "We look at waste as materials with a history and with a potential new life as a new product", says Jenny Nordberg. The method of Apocalypse takes the complete life cycle of a product in consideration. "In The Soap we combine the old tradition of making cold processed soap with the use of a modern waste material of our home town", says Petra Lilja. The sound track for the release of The Soap is composed by artist Andres Corazon who turned the oil barrels into oil drums. Here's the link to the soundtrack. You should definitely listen to it. http://davidreport.com/blog/wp-content/up loads/2008/04/andres-corazon-apocalypso-n ow.mp3 » <a href='http://david...

cable reel façade

In The Hague (NL) artist initiative 1646 recently re-opend their renewed door. After at least a decade of insecure use of an old shop in the centre of the city, the city council decided to support this cultural initiative and to refurbish the (neglected) building. The old house is being restored/renewed, and in the place of the sheds in the backyard there is made a new spacious extension. The groundfloor is used for exhibitions, which can be seen in a new façade. The artists in the organisation can use apart from this gallery space four workshops and offer one guest room for an international artist. The architects tried to make the building like a sketch-book; as big and spacious as possible, and basic, free to many uses. Building costs of course had to be low, so the extension is a light-weight construction; in the concrete floor are integrated foundation as well as the heating system. The construction of the walls and roof are made of wood. For cladding recycled wood is used; the...

On His website called 'architecture libre' - free(d) architecture - some of his unique projects are published, starting from 1958, with a housing project built out of autobuses The projects resemble very much the work of the dutch Cobra-artist Constant Nieuwenhuys called New Babylon but seem to go a bit more into detail concerning the materials that are used. next to autobuses the website shows models of early cardboard building prnciples. » original news

Reuse Workshop, Industrial Design, Guadalajara, Mexico A competition for students of Tecnologico de Monterrey campus Guadalajara, Mexico lead to a number of designs. The students were only given five days to submit their entries. The students were even more inspired because the designs could be included a policy text that will be published later and that will be given to educate politicians and other government officials about design's role in society, reuse, recycling and promoting local industry and tecnologies. The idea was to create a product from existing products instead of creating something from using raw new materials. At first students were surprised that there would not be the freedom they might like to have in other competitions. Then the students were shown examples of another similar competition. Once students looked at those results they took off and started brainstorming. The winning entry was made by: Rosaura Sanchez, Elisa Lua, Anami Orozco, Aldo Alatorre, J...

beauty from destruction
2008-05-17 11:32:00
One of the important pieces of cultural heritage that has been lost during the fire in The faculty of architecture in Delft was Rietvelds Aluminium Armchair. "Pressed and stamped aluminium contruction. This chair was probably inspired by military aircraft seats. Constructed from a bent, single sheet of stamped aluminium, the design pushed the materials technical and aesthetic limits further than ever before." ( ) The original prototype was built from the aluminium wing of an English airplane that crashed in the 1940's . Gerrit Oorthuis told me that the one now lost in delft was one of three replica's made by Rietveld in the 60's. The original poroype is damaged and probably stored in the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. He thinks the relation with airplane-seats is not very likely since Rietveld used the techniques for this chair on many different materials before. This chair has not been Rietvelds only superuse product design, showing that beauty can rise from dest...
