dugout canoe's in Mongu
2007-12-12 11:24:00 In Mongu, Western Province, Zambia, Rob van Acker has transformed old buggered dugout canoe's into furniture. These canoe's found in Mongu Harbor were beyond repair and would have been used by the owners as firewood. Rob used the thin hardwood weatherbeaten shapes to make bookshelves, benches and tables. The furniture was sold in a very limited edition under the label "Made in Mongu" » <a href='http://web.mac.com/rob.van.acker/iW eb/rob.van.acker%40mac.com/OLD%20MOKORO.h tml'>original news</a>

2007-12-12 11:24:00 Josh Owen from the United States designed a chandelier made of his pile of CD jewel cases. The discs seem to loose their function since MP3 players can host up 160 GB (iPod-classic) of data, an estimated 40.000 tracks. Josh's about when he saw the light: 'The CD Lamp began as an exercise in repositioning an industrial artifact that is beginning to outlive its intended functionality. As it is with technology and our increasing comfort levels with digital information, our storage vehicles are evolving. Our data lives in computers, hard drives, increasingly more consumer products, now jewelry and soon we'll carry it casually under our skin. As such, the very idea of the CD has become less important, less valuable and more temporary. People feel much more nonchalant about the way they interact with CDs and the need for a "protective" case has subsided in many circles. I've watched this trend develop and one day as I was staring at the pile of CD cases I was ab...

Totemobile
2007-12-09 22:52:00 Transformers are back! Earlier this year there was a motion picture, retrovied from the 80s cartoon series. Accompanied with a very nice transformation sound, particular automotive transportion devices could transform themself into a robot with some kind of emotional inteligence as well as emotional defects. But the robot-disguised-as-car idea was also shown in commercials. French carmaker Citroën used it to put some boogie in there windtunnel derivates. The result: a car turned into a clever made computer animation. So helas, no transformers at your car dealer. Until March 2007 that was, when one specific dealership got one. On the 42 Avenue des Champs-Elysees, Paris, Citroën unveiled the Totemobile. A shiney million-dollar-plus robotic sculpture that's sure to drive potential customers to just to their Champs-Elysees showroom. The venerable French automaker gave free conceptual rein to artist Chico MacMurtrie and his team at Brooklyn's Amorphic Robot Works. "Durin...

Apple Mail
2007-12-06 20:34:00 In Te Atatu, Auckland, New Zealand, someone booted his Apple Power Mac G4 into a mailbox. So, now when this person wants to check his mail, he also gets a sip of fresh air. When he does that for over 40 times per hour, (as some do with their email,) he burns a huge amount of calories. And generally, exercise is also good for reducing stress levels. When the mail is to big, the deliverant could just knock on the recipients door. A chat, from one person to another, eyeball to eyeball, becomes than possible. You don't need to print your mail either. It's also incapable of getting infected, however it can deteriorate because of the weather. It's also still vulnerable for vandalism. For instance SPAM, which can stuff the mailbox so that it's incapabele of receving. But than again, perhaps the deliverant could knock again and now to see if the recipient is still alive. One big minor hasn't been solved in the process, because it's still such a beautiful thing, some people perhaps, ... More About: Mail

2007-12-04 09:13:00 14th of december the Brussels organisation Rotor opened its temporary office on a derilict buildingplot, reusing the neigbours wall and supportbeams for lateral stability. Tha pavilion is built from different types of temporary and wastematerials; scaffolding and casting-beams as a main construction, plastic sheeting, as a facade and wastefoams for insulation and seating furniture. A roofterrace is built form cut-off wood from van-building companies. Rotor is the belgian sisterorganisation of Recyclicity. Their main aim is tracing production waste at large. In their new office they will spend a year investigating as many as possible streams for reuse purposes in Belgium. Rotor is an initiative of Maarten Gielen and many other creatives.Maarten told us that in belgium a building permit can last up to one and a half year. One would think this makes spontanuous and temporary project like this impossible, but actually temporary constructions are invisible to the administration. Especia...
folkewall from used cartyres
2007-12-03 22:31:00 A common principle in permaculture is that every unit should perform serveral functions. By growing plants in a porpos wall, you get both an efficient space use by vertical plant growing and purificaltion of the percolating water, which may be greywater. One way of building such a permaculture "folkewall" could be from worn out tires and plastic bags. » <a href='http://www.holon.se/folke/projects/ tires/tires.shtml'>original news</a>

MacQuarium
2007-11-26 20:39:00 A MacQuarium is an aquarium made to sit within the shell of an Apple Macintosh computer. The term was coined by computer writer Andy Ihnatko as a joke (a jibe at the outdatedness of the Macintosh 512K) but MacQuaria have since been built both by Ihnatko himself and by many of his fans, and some are even commercially available. Ihnatko originally designed the MacQuarium around the Compact Macintosh-style shell; at the time early examples of this form factor (the Macintosh 128K, Macintosh 512K and Macintosh Plus) were completely outdated and thus turning a system into an aquarium was considered "the final upgrade" as well as most affordable way to get have a colour Compact Mac. However, some enthusiasts have since successfully adapted the translucent iMac case (to form an iMacquarium) as well as the Macintosh TV, the Apple Lisa and the Power Mac G4 Cube. Andy Ihnatko's original construction was called a "MacQuarium," however, both "MacQu...

Katamari Damacy
2007-11-26 10:52:00 Katamari Damacy (lit. "Clump Spirit") is a third-person puzzle-action video game published and developed by Namco for the PlayStation 2 video game console. It was first released in Japan on March 18, 2004. The game's plot concerns a tiny prince on a mission to rebuild the stars, constellations and Moon, which his father, the King of All Cosmos, has accidentally destroyed. This is achieved by rolling a magical, highly adhesive ball called a katamari around various locations, collecting increasingly larger objects, ranging from thumbtacks to thumbpicker, bike, boat, whale, bridge, plane, skyscraper to a vulcano, until the ball has grown large enough to become a star. The game falls under both the puzzle and action game genres, since strategy as well as dexterity are needed to complete a mission. In Japanese, Katamari means "clump" or "clod" and Damashii is the rendaku form of tamashii which means "soul" or &am... More About: Katamari , Tamar , Amar

Chair A Lot
2007-11-20 09:03:00 At the 8th Istanbul Biennial 2003, Doris Salcedo filled a derelict building plot with 1,550 wooden chairs. These were piled house-high and made flush with the facades of the buildings either side, evoking the masses of faceless migrants who underpin our globalised economy. Doris Salcedo was born in 1958 in Bogota, Colombia, where she continues to live and work. Widely recognised as one of the leading sculptors of her generation, over the past five years Salcedo has increasingly addressed the public sphere in her practice and has completed several large-scale projects around the world. This will be Salcedo's first public commission in the UK. Responding to specific architectural, geographic and political situations, all of Salcedo's projects are grounded in meticulous research, the exact nature of which is mostly hidden by the silent and hauntingly beautiful poetry of her work. Common themes include the destructive force of violence, personal and collective trauma, and the tragedy... More About: Chair
Trash To Trashcan
2007-11-18 17:25:00 Along 4th Avenue in Tucson, Arizona (USA) cobalt123 (photographer) shot a waste can made of reused bicycle parts. The street is part of the shopping district of the old downtown area and hosts several of such waste cans. They're placed in a heavily-promoted "cool" area for shopping: head stores, vintage clothing, lounges, import goods, health food store, bookstores, fashion and design retail, etc.. The rims set the width of the bin, pedals and cogwheels are placed inbetween. Though the bicycle parts still have their very distinctive aesthetics, you seem to notice them only at second glance. A larger, much more detailed photo is available when clicked upon the picture. More articles from this author:2007-11-16 00:05:00 About a month ago we discovered a kind of record cloth hanging on a facade at Ruigoord, Amsterdam. A small article of this 2d use can be found on this Superuse website. 3d use of the good old vinyl seems also possible. The University of Art and Design at Burg Giebichenstein Halle/Saale (Germany) discovered this quality.
