In Mongu, Western Province, Zambia, Rob van Acker has transformed old buggered dugout canoe's into furniture. These canoe's found in Mongu Harbor were beyond repair and would have been used by the owners as firewood. Rob used the thin hardwood weatherbeaten shapes to make bookshelves, benches and tables. Josh Owen from the United States designed a chandelier made of his pile of CD jewel cases. The discs seem to loose their function since MP3 players can host up 160 GB (iPod-classic) of data, an estimated 40.000 tracks. Transformers are back! Earlier this year there was a motion picture, retrovied from the 80s cartoon series. Accompanied with a very nice transformation sound, particular automotive transportion devices could transform themself into a robot with some kind of emotional inteligence as well as emotional defects. But the robot-disguised-as-car idea was also shown in commercials. French carmaker Citroën used it to put some boogie in there windtunnel derivates. In Te Atatu, Auckland, New Zealand, someone booted his Apple Power Mac G4 into a mailbox. So, now when this person wants to check his mail, he also gets a sip of fresh air. When he does that for over 40 times per hour, (as some do with their email,) he burns a huge amount of calories. And generally, exercise is also good for reducing stress levels. When the mail is to big, the deliverant could just knock on the recipients door. A chat, from one person to another, eyeball to eyeball, becomes than possible. You don't need to print your mail either. It's also incapable of getting infected, however it can deteriorate because of the weather. It's also still vulnerable for vandalism. For instance SPAM, which can stuff the mailbox so that it's incapabele of receving. But than again, perhaps the deliverant could knock again and now to see if the recipient is still alive. The panelling of the cupboards for this kitchen is made out laser-cut plywood, an industrial leftover from a company specialized in die-cutting cardboard for the packaging of luxury-goods. The wooden boards were used as punching-plates for punching out the shape of unfolded boxes from larger sheets of cardboard. We had to extract the razor-sharp knives from the slits before being able to saw the boards. 14th of december the Brussels organisation Rotor opened its temporary office on a derilict buildingplot, reusing the neigbours wall and supportbeams for lateral stability. Tha pavilion is built from different types of temporary and wastematerials; scaffolding and casting-beams as a main construction, plastic sheeting, as a facade and wastefoams for insulation and seating furniture. A roofterrace is built form cut-off wood from van-building companies. Rotor is the belgian sisterorganisation of Recyclicity. Their main aim is tracing production waste at large. In their new office they will spend a year investigating as many as possible streams for reuse purposes in Belgium. Max is a sofa created from a vintage cast iron tub. The seat is by Reestore, a design outfit. They have their way with, old, used stuff, giving sometimes quite normal (like this bathtub), sometimes more odd (like a shiney washing machine table) objects a second life as interior furnishings and so on. A MacQuarium is an aquarium made to sit within the shell of an Apple Macintosh computer. The term was coined by computer writer Andy Ihnatko as a joke (a jibe at the outdatedness of the Macintosh 512K) but MacQuaria have since been built both by Ihnatko himself and by many of his fans, and some are even commercially available. These were piled house-high and made flush with the facades of the buildings either side, evoking the masses of faceless migrants who underpin our globalised economy. Doris Salcedo was born in 1958 in Bogota, Colombia, where she continues to live and work. Along 4th Avenue in Tucson, Arizona (USA) cobalt123 (photographer) shot a waste can made of reused bicycle parts. The street is part of the shopping district of the old downtown area and hosts several of such waste cans. They're placed in a heavily-promoted "cool" area for shopping: head stores, vintage clothing, lounges, import goods, health food store, bookstores, fashion and design retail, etc.. The rims set the width of the bin, pedals and cogwheels are placed inbetween. Though the bicycle parts still have their very distinctive aesthetics, you seem to notice them only at second glance. About a month ago we discovered a kind of record cloth hanging on a facade at Ruigoord, Amsterdam. A small article of this 2d use can be found on this Superuse website. 3d use of the good old vinyl seems also possible. The University of Art and Design at Burg Giebichenstein Halle/Saale (Germany) discovered this quality. Here a collection of records make a big ball and as such they give an other meaning to the word discotheque.
