waste documentary series
2009-06-12 10:26:00
Waste? is a documentary series that features people redefining waste: from canners scouring the streets for redeemables, engineers powering their breweries with waste water, architects constructing homes out of tires, and more. Intent We live in a culture in which products are designed to be consumed and disposed of in volume. Rarely are consumers or manufacturers held responsible for the environmental repercussions of this model. As a result, individuals have lost touch with product origins and the impact of their consumption. However, Waste? is not a doomsday story. This series features spirited individuals that survive or create using waste. Their stories will educate and motivate attitudinal and behavioral change. Waste? explores what motivates people to reuse waste through conversations with garbage anthropologists, yardists, artists and companies. The intent is for viewers to reflect on their relationship with waste, recycling habits, consumption patterns, and to take releva...

High Line Opened!
2009-06-12 07:59:00
From today, June 9th 2009*, the High Line is openend. The project, (a sketch is posted half a year ago on Superuse,) consists of a park on an elevated railroadtrack in New York. Vegetation took over the tracks when the last train passed in 1980. Instead of getting rid of the green and the structure it is turned into a park. Diverse and variated green spaces are layed out in order to create a slow environment. The High Line looks like its own calm world. The green now floats over streets and cut through city blocks. The High Line is located on the West Side of Manhattan. The first section runs from Gansevoort Street, in the Meatpacking District, to West 20th Street, in Chelsea, between Tenth and Eleventh Avenues. The High Line sets a good example for old infrastructure. For instance the also Hofpleinlijn running from the Hague - Rotterdam v.v. will stop running this year (2009). After that a 1,9 km long building called The Hofbogen and covering the elevated railroad, will hopef...

lime-pozzolana-maize blocks
2009-06-10 19:55:00
dpr | science is working on a new material with a combination of lime, pozzolana and maize fibers used to produce construction elements. Some efforts or the research are conducted to propose ways of closing the life-cycle of the material. In this sense, special attention has been given to the fact that intensive harvesting methods accelerate soil erosion. After used as a construction material constituent, it has been noticed that due to its chemical composition, the material it may be feasible to use the composite as acidity correction material in agricultural soils. It is intended to apply this composite in the development of low-tech housing projects in rural areas, enhancing the use of local workforce and strengthening vernacular constructive tradition by using rapidly available resources like lime and vegetable fibers. » original news

Flashmob Chandelier
2009-06-10 11:01:00
'These discs work like a spring mechanism and I have fixed its outward force in different shapes by bonding the fabric on specific points to the spring steel ring', Henny van Nistelrooy presented this beautiful chandelier at the Arnhem Fashion Biennale*. The London based Dutch designer made it of reflecting discs that conventionally are used in photography. Inspired by the biennale's theme SHAPE, Henny approached this by exploring the characteristics of these visually appealing collapsible discs to create three-dimensional forms. It's made from rather simple components: found umbrella pieces, aluminum, and porcelain sockets. The umbrella's have been installed at two separate shows in 2009 already: at American Design Club's "Hue Are You?" as well as DIFFA's* 2009 "Dining by Design." *Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS Shelly Sabel Umbrella Chandelier (2009) Superused: umbrella pieces, aluminum and porcelain sockets http://shellysabel.com/ Via: http://www.yankodesign.com/2009/06/05/umb rella-chandeliers/ *) http://www.superuse.org/story.php?title=U MBRELLAS-LED-1 » original news
Ecopencil made from paper
2009-06-09 09:59:00
The Ecopencil just use a lead, paper and glue. You can make it in your own house. With this concept, you save money and at the same time you will contribute to reuse materials and avoid wood, metals or other materials which pencils are made of. Time ago, Milton Friedman explained where the materials for creating a pencil came from. The wood structure maybe from North America. The carbon lead from South America. The back rubber from Asia... and so on... With this simple idea, you can just reduce the environmental footprint of the whole process and create your own pencils by reusing paper and just 5 minutes of soft work. » origina l news

PET Bottle Brick
2009-06-02 10:02:00
Honduras based Eco-Tec came up with a clever idea for reusing PET-bottles: 'a mud-filled bottle is as strong as a brick and whatever you can do with a brick, you can do with a bottle to. Plus it has got lots of advantages to.' Eco-Tec is founded in 2001 by Andreas Froese Germen and has it's head quarters in Honduras. The company has done more than 50 eco friendly projects in Honduras, Columbia, Bolivia and India. The company is specialized in making houses and watertanks with land-filled PET-bottles: the PET-bottle brick. The bricks can be assambeld into diverse shapes such as straight and curved walls and elements such as columns. The advantages of the PET-bottle brick, are, according to Eco-Tec: 1. Low cost 2. Non-Brittle - (Unlike bricks) 3.. Absorbs abrupt shock loads - Since they are not brittle, there can take up heavy loads without failure. 4. Bio climatic 5. Re-usable 6. Less construction material 7. Easy to build 8. Green Construction Some houses come with a living r...

Auto-Cannibalistic Table
2009-06-02 02:29:00
For the sake of sustainability one wants furniture to last a long time in an effort to conserve resources and energy. Ate Atema of Atema Architecture, however, ponders whether this philosophy is truly the correct path to eco-enlightenment. With his Auto -Cannibalistic Table , which is intended to be a temporary object, the former Frank Gehry employee, embraces sustainability in a less conventional way. The table was constructed with paper egg cartons and wheatpaste glue, which is made from flour and water, and then planted with herbs. The herbs can be picked as they grow, creating a place where food can both be eaten as well as grown » original news

Anycoloryoulike
2009-06-02 02:28:00
Anycoloryoulike, is an 'art intervention for urban beautification and environmental awareness'. The project is an interactive trash-art project from New York artist Adrian Kondratowicz. He has transformed piles of trash around New York with the use of colorful, patterned trash bags, starting in 2008. An accompanying video shows how awareness of garbage is heightened when the bags are not your standard-issue black. A small clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZV07rs3FIT Adrian took the concept to Naples where he collaborated with Italian filmmaker Tommaso Cardile and musician Alberto Polo Cretara on a project in Naples, Italy. 'Due to the crazy sanitation problem (Naples ran out of space to throw out their waste) garbage overflows in city squares, streets, and the suburbs.' The 334 bench is the first furniture of the X days project series by Oscar Lhermitte. He is a student at Central Saint Martins College of Arts and Design. The 334 bench is made of three parallel bars of metal and 334 chronological newspapers folded and stacked next to each other. Because of the large number of newspapers stacked in the 3 bars, the whole structure is very strong and can support more than 5 persons. The 334 bench costed around 5 pounds. Jason Rogenes
2009-06-02 02:22:00
Manuf®actured a.k.a. The Museum of Contemporary Craft uses a catchy slogan: 'The conspisous transformation of everyday objects.' There motivation however is not beeing green perse, but the transformation of the daily object. Jason Rogenes (1971) on the other hand uses trash to create his objects. Manuf®actured: 'Artist Jason Rogenes first found his raw material while living in the commerce-driven, big-box store, strip mall environment of Los Angeles where polystyrene was inexpensive and easily procured. In this abundant byproduct of consumer culture, originally designed to protect packaged electronics and other products, he saw the potential for material transformation. For Manuf®actured, he has created a floating, glowing site-specific installation in the museum's two story main gallery flanked by a wall construction of polystyrene and cardboard. Combining the essential properties of polystyrene (strength in compression and light weight) with its aesthetic properties (va...

Incompiuto Siciliano
2009-05-18 15:37:00
1. SICILIAN INCOMPLETION HAS BEEN THE KEY TO INTERPRETING PUBLIC-SECTOR ARCHITECTURE IN ITALY SINCE THE SECOND WORLD WAR. Its sheer scale, territorial extent and architectural oddness have made Sicilian Incompletion essential to an understanding of Italy's history over the last forty years. The smugness of many Sicilian town councils has generated an architectural style that conveys the many-faceted nature of the culture that fostered it. 2. INCOMPLETE PROJECTS ARE THE RUINS OF MODERNITY, MONUMENTS BORN OF LAISSEZ-FAIRE CREATIVE ENTHUSIASM. In the years when positive economic sentiment and growth unexpectedly gave Italians financial peace of mind, imagination and exuberance were the driving forces behind a reconfiguration of the land. Landmarks in their own way, Incomplete public works radiated out from Sicily to the rest of the peninsula, creating an Unfinished Italy. 3. SICILIAN INCOMPLETION DEVELOPED INTO AN INCISIVE, RADICALLY DIFFERENT ADDITION TO THE LANDSCAPE. THE PROCESS ...
