Online privacy in Germany is over
2008-01-03 00:21:00 This blog post veers a little bit from my usual topics, but in my opinion it is still quite important. Since January 1st, Germany has had a new online surveillance law. The result is an unfortunate wide scale intervention in the privacy of German citizens. Once again, it is another anti-terrorism law since 9/11. ... More About: Online Privacy , Privacy , Online

Not English, but a multilingual social web is the key for collaboration
2007-12-18 00:00:00 The social web is quite separated in different language domains. English is a key language to bridge different cultures, but it can also be a dead end. Worldwide collaboration can only work in a multilingual network. English is one of the major languages on the net, whether it is on blogs, social networks or the ... The private vs. the organizational approach to web2.0
2007-12-13 22:56:00 I have already written about 10 challenges for web2.0 in an organization, but this time I would like to highlight two decisive factors: Culture and a new paradigm of knowledge sharing. Furthermore, this post elaborates the differences between web2.0 in private life vs. in an organizational setting. Culture is a key factor. Blogs and wikis change ... More About: Private , Organ

Citizen journalism in Africa
2007-12-07 00:23:00 Most countries are far away from reaching the level that Koreans have on citizen journalism, such is the case of the famous Ohmynews: “The Net and Netizens Watchdogging Government.” A pioneer of citizen journalism was certainly indymedia.org, which got famous during the WTO protest back in 1999 in Seattle. In German language there is an ... More About: Africa , Journalism , Citizen
Notes from the web4dev conference
2007-12-04 00:12:00 Continuing with the web4dev conference in Nairobi, I wanted to add some more personal perspectives. During the conference, on the second day, twenty different workshops were offered. We, Nynke and I, gave a presentation that same day, and as with most other sessions, not many people showed up. We highlighted some lessons we had learnt ... More About: Notes , Conference

Pitfalls of micro blogging via Twitter
2007-11-25 02:45:00 In my last post I described the potential for social networks by tweets and statuses, but now I would like to add to it some links of interesting blog posts about Twitter and its potential. The difficulty of saying good bye to top-down communication
2007-11-15 23:55:00 Last Tuesday I took part on a discussion round in Düsseldorf, Germany. It was about the changing of the communication of enterprises due to web2.0. Reflecting the evening, I find it quite interesting what it might have meant in terms of the new web and its potential users in Germany. To put ahead, I share ... Open Source Life?
2007-11-12 01:35:00 As Japan is losing interest in the personal computer, Google announces recently the Android alliance to bring free and open source software to mobile phones. The revolutionary part of this is that proprietary software might be mostly for the personal computer; it will not longer be anymore for the mobile. This opens complete different opportunities ... What is the outcome of new social network tools?
2007-11-05 14:12:00 I am quite impressed about the success of Facebook. The intimacy aspect, the clear design and usability combined with all sorts of applications are probably some of the success factors. However, I wonder what is the aftermath of this social network, and how many different results come out of it? I ponder how many people ... More About: Social , Tools , Network , Social Network
Blogs vs. Books for learning
2007-10-30 23:40:00 This post is rather abstract. It depicts me being puzzled about choosing between blogs or books. The question is if these two media could even be compared at all? Today I heard a presentation on which it was said that the internet is no medium, in the way that you absorb no knowledge from it, ... More About: Books , Blogs , Learning , Earning

Web2.0, knowledge sharing and IT departments
2007-10-18 00:22:00 Here in Germany, Web2.0 is in everybody’s mouth. 3 different conversations: blogs to fight poverty
2007-10-08 16:19:00 Thanks to Tom L. and Peter Ballantayne for their very interesting remarks on my post “an overview of blogging for development.” Peter argued that there are a lot different blogs in development aid or international cooperation out there and “must be loads more, just not very visible.” And Tom had a great point: What?s probably as ... The web comes closer - the magic of tag clouds
2007-10-04 22:19:00 As you might have already noticed, I am a pretty big fan of tagging. I think tagging is often underestimated because it is trivial, but at the same time intuitive and meaningful. A tag cloud (or weighted list in visual design) is a visual depiction of content tags (keywords) used on a website. Often, more frequently ... More About: Magic , Clouds , Closer
Development aid 2.0
2007-10-03 00:39:00 I was interviewed by the Deutsche Welle (German version) last week during the web2fordev conference. web2fordev conference impressions (2)
2007-09-30 17:53:00 Complexity Another key lesson was the big question of ‘how to best combine all these web2.0 tools to obtain better results.’ Everybody is still experimenting –this might be what web2.0 is all about. Nevertheless, I understood the importance of taking a holistic approach and use a combination of blogs according to the objective. So, experimenting still ... web2fordev conference impressions (1)
2007-09-30 01:56:00 Unfortunately, I did not have the opportunity to blog during the web2fordev conference. An overview of blogging for development
2007-09-19 13:33:00 Background As some of you might already know I work for GTZ (German Technical Cooperation), and I am of course very interested in the potential of the web towards development aid and international cooperation. Surprisingly–and correct me if I am wrong!–but to me, it seems there are not many blogs out their in this field yet. There are of course a lot of portals –and two of the big ones are the development gateway or eldis.org. However, in my opinion, the development sector has yet not grasped the potential of web2.0. I already argued in a post that the result is that this shift, so far, is challenging traditional development agencies. What is there in the world wide web? One interesting website is aid worker network, which contains personal blogs from all around the world. There are also individual blogs that describe in an authentic and provoking way how it is to work in this field. Check out these examples from Afghanistan and Sudan. The science world is also b... 2007-09-17 00:51:00 I just stumbled over deliGoo, a great new search mashup. It combines del.icio.us and Google’s custom search. Few steps to a powerful social software application
2007-09-08 15:15:00 I have been dealing with different kinds of content management systems for some years now.
