3Com Acquisition
2008-03-21 13:53:00
Data Center Links – 3Com is an interesting company. Back in the day they were everywhere….lots of products, lots of market penetration. Then, there are times where I forget they even exist and just dont hear much about them or their products. With a founder like Robert Metcalfe: the founder and co-inventor of a little thing called…. Ethernet, how could the company go wrong? 3Com has been in the limelight ... read more
Huawei, Bain, 3Com. There Will Be Blood. Because I Said So.
2008-02-26 00:10:00
The Wall Street Journal has an interesting article on the failure of the Huawei/Bain 3Com deal. The article is entitled, "Harsh Climate In Washington Ices 3Com Deal: Hope for Buyout Revival Led By Foreign Capital Dims Amid China Jitters," and it mostly focuses on how the Committee on Foreign Investment in the U.S., (CFIUS) likely would have rejected this deal and on how this likely will have "a chilling effect on foreigners' interest in U.S. firms." My favorite part of the article, for obvious reasons, is the following: "There will be tremendous repercussions in China because of this," said Dan Harris, a Seattle lawyer who represents U.S. clients in China. "We should not be ignoring the impact that this might have on our own companies trying to do business over there." Since the article does not explain the "repercussions," I will do so now. Many (most?) in China believe the rest of the world (the United States, in particular) do not want China to rise. China (probably r...

Somewhere, the ghosts of Smoot and Hawley and smiling this morning. A Chinese firm, Huawei Technologies, has pulled out of its plans to buy 3Com because it became obvious a federal panel wouldn't approve the deal.  The reason: 3Com makes anti-hacker software for the military.  Can't have that falling into Chinese hands, according to the ...

3Com, a maker of networking hardware and software, will be sold to affiliates of private equity firm Bain Capital Partners LLC for $2.2 billion and taken private. The cash deal also gives Huawei Technologies, China's largest manufacturer of telecommunications equipment, a minority stake in 3Com that the American company hopes will improve its growth prospects in Asia. By going private, 3Com hopes to free itself from markets' short-term financial expectations, Edgar Masri, president and chief executive told analysts in a conference call
Digium 3COM partnership brings Asterisk to enterprise market
2007-10-02 17:25:00
On the heels of Switchvox acquisition and spreading Digium's market reach to many SMBs, Digium announced that it is signing a deal with 3COM, a network gear manufacturer, who itself was in a deal that sold itself last week. But Digium stand to gain from the 3COM deal. As thousands of 3COM dealers and resellers around the world. Also 3COM had a good history with VoIP IP Telephony. (A search on Google for this blogs name, "VoIP IP Telephony" brings 3COM just after me! )Now Asterisk stands just next to VCX, and NBX, well established telephony brands, at 3COM. I am happy to see "3COMAsterisk" proudly displayed first in the series of VoIP products offered by 3COM.3Com will sell Asterisk as its 30-and-under solution. That's because it is aiming it's own products (NBX, VCX) at the above-30-seat market. But Asterisk might replace now aging NBX gear. This deal makes Digium make it's strong hold on enterprise market stronger. 3COM already has a certain VoIP market segments covered. It al...
3Com Finally Delivers the Asterisk Goods
2007-10-01 16:45:00
3Com has finally announced plans to embrace Asterisk — the open source telephony platform. The VAR Guy has only one question: What took so long? This is a move 3Com should have announced much earlier this year. But in the company’s defense, it’s still very early in the open source telephony game. And the Asterisk strategy could be a winner for 3Com. Here’s why. As you likely know, Bain Capital Partners is acquiring 3Com for $2.2 billion. As part of the deal, Huawei Technologies Co. of China will acquire a stake in 3Com. Some pundits think that means 3Com is finally ready to go after Cisco at the high-end of the market. Wrong, wrong, wrong. 3Com burned large enterprises a decade ago when it botched the US Robotics acquisition and abandoned many corporate CIOs in global 2000 companies. Many big companies simply don’t trust 3Com these days. In fact, 3Com isn’t even on their radar. The real opportunity for 3Com here is in small and midsize business...
Huawei and Bain Buys 3COM
2007-09-29 23:27:00
Networking company 3Com announced Friday that it will be acquired by private equity company Bain Capital and former joint-venture partner Huawei Technologies in a $2.2 billion cash deal. The transaction, will give China's Huawei a minority stake in the Marlborough, Mass.-based company.Under the terms of the agreement announced Friday, private-equity firm Bain Capital will take a stake of more than 80% in 3Com, based in Marlborough, Mass., and founded in 1979. Huawei Technologies Co. of China is purchasing the rest, say people familiar with the matter. The deal was struck at $5.30 a share, a 44% premium to 3Com's closing price Thursday, yet far from the heights where its stock traded during the 1990s.According to WSJ, the 3Com deal reflects a burgeoning trend for Chinese companies: engaging in overseas mergers and acquisitions by purchasing strategic stakes instead of complete corporate control. By leaving majority control to others, the Chinese companies hope they can help mitigat...

2007-09-28 16:28:00
The 3Com Corp. you knew on September 27 is dead. A new 3Com is emerging, effective immediately. The former networking giant has been sold to affiliates of Bain Capital Partners for $2.2 billion in cash. The deal, pending regulatory approval, is long overdue, The VAR Guy believes. Here's why.

2007-07-18 21:10:00

(He'll tell you about the other three companies at a later date.) Now comes word that private equity firms have approached 3Com about a buyout. There are five reasons why 3Com and its VARs would benefit from being private. Here they are...
