I hated A Scanner Darkly. The husband loved it however. I found myself getting sucked in more to the animation than the actual story. In fact I didn't even finish watching it because I was so hopelessly bored with it.
DVD Review: A Scanner Darkly

A Scanner Darkly Year: 2006 Director: Richard Linklater IMDB I’ll start off by saying that I am a Philip K. Dick fan. A Scanner Darkly is Linklater’s adaptation of the Philip K. Dick novel of the same name. Linklater, has both directed and written three movies that I liked a lot: Before Sunset, Before Sunrise, and Waking Life. ...

A SCANNER DARKLY IS NOW AVAILABLE ONLINEHERE IS THE SUMMARY OF THE MOVIE A SCANNER DARKLY FROM IMDBThe L.A. of a not-too-distant future suffers a surge of drug abuse involving a new ultra-addictive and eventually brain-damaging substance simply named "D". Bob Arctor is an undercover narc leading a double life, dutifully reporting to his superiors while effectively having abandoned whatever normal existence he had for a "D" user/dealer career. But this schizophrenic situation and the drug-induced memory and concentration lapses put Bob under mounting stress. Written by Armin Ortmann {armin@sfb288.math.tu-berlin.de-} HERE IS A REVIEW OF THE MOVIE A SCANNER DARKLY FROM DVDTALKThe Movie Chemical-laced reality and seething paranoia collapse and melt into one another throughout writer/director Richard Linklater's mostly faithful adaptation of Philip K. Dick's A Scanner Darkly. Eerie, liquid animation (first utilized in Linklater's 2001 existential odyssey Waking Life and thereaf...

A Scanner Darkly, Look Away

Bob Arctor is a dealer of the lethally addictive drug Substance D. Fred is the police agent assigned to tail and eventually bust him. To do so, Fred takes on the identity of a drug dealer named Bob Arctor. And since Substance D–which Arctor takes in massive doses–gradually splits the user’s brain into two distinct, combative entities, Fred doesn’t realize he is narcing on himself. Book Review by Mike Philbin A Scanner Darkly is one of Philip K. Dick’s later novels and, as such it hit me right between the eyes like a punch from a featherweight. It didn’t knock me unconscious but my eyes started to water and my legs turned to jelly. I nearly puked at one point as the punches came in from all sides, but I didn’t go down. I knew all’s I had to do was stay on my feet. I knew that as long as I turned the pages and followed Robert Arctor to the end of the book as if he was my guide through ‘how to fuck your head with drugs’ then I...

There is a tendency among Hollywood critics (and the general viewers) that often rankles me.It seems that when something different happens, audiences and critics alike have lost the ability to just grasp the difference and perhaps enjoy it for a change instead of griping about it.I am not going to go into what Linklater wished to convey through this movie. So the story is nothing new, the characters are disappointing, and there is always that lack of direction in the proceedings. So <beep>ing what?It is a good movie. At least for me when a movie tries to do something different, even if that difference is merely technological, it is a good thing.A Scanner Darkly makes use of interpolated rotoscoping that makes a regular movie look like a cel animation. The results are remarkable. It is said that 500 hours worth of effort was required to get 1 minute of movie screen time. That is a lot of hard work and it is appreciated.More than that it is beautiful. This is one of those movies t...
