Brett Farve Should Remain Retired; Give Aaron Rogers A Chance
2008-07-04 04:52:00 The news is all over the place regarding Brett Farve's rumored return to play in the NFL. But look, we've seen this dance before and frankly I'm tired of it. Look, I've cried twice thinking that was the end of the line for this great legend of the game. But geez, can't we get a chance to miss Brett and wonder what if, rather than see him step on the field and perhaps not do well? What's the point? To prove that one can play until their 50? To test the benefits of Viagra? I'm curious. What's the deal? Is it the money? Or just the plain love of being cheered and admired.I think that's it.Regardless. I can see the late Coach Walsh now, looking down from Heaven and thinking, "If I were there, I'd have cut him two years ago. What's going on with the Packers?" 2008-05-21 10:48:00 Adam Rubin of the New York Daily News is hearing buzz from scouts that the Mets are shopping 29 year-old reliever Aaron Heilman. Heilman has a career best strikeout rate in 22.2 innings, but everything else has gone haywire (control, home runs and hits allowed). Rubin says the Mets are looking for a setup man in return. It seems that the best fit would be with a noncontending team that would switch Heilman back to starting. The Nationals (Jon Rauch), Reds (David Weathers), and Pirates (Damaso Marte, John Grabow) might have decent relievers available. Not sure if they'd have interest in Heilman, though. Heilman will be arbitration-eligible in 2009 and 2010 and will reach free agency after that.

2008-04-16 20:04:00 I still haven't seen the documentary King Corn, which digs into all the ways that corn is used (and abused) in our society. Our friends over at ZapRoot, though, got a chance to sit down with Aaron Woolf, the film's director, for their latest episode. This brief video also a segment on those manmade Dubai islands and the 56 mpg Fiat 500 gets a few seconds of screen time as well. The movie clips from King Corn included in ZapRoot show how this movie focuses more on the food side of the corn equation (i.e., not so much the ethanol), but the movie does get into how complicated the America's agribusiness policy is. During the promotional work for the film, people associated with the movie did discuss ethanol's role in elevating the royal crop. Thanks to a link from the King Corn website, I just found out my local PBS station is showing the movie tonight and if I remember to watch or record it, I might have a review coming up. Blue Jays Sign Alex Rios, Aaron Hill
2008-04-04 16:42:00 Surprise move by the Jays today - they inked second baseman Aaron Hill to a four-year, $12MM deal with club options for three years after that. The deal begins with the '08 season and then covers his three arb years. Orlando Hudson, a decent comparable, got about $12.8MM for a similar slice of his career. Sounds fair, and the options are a nice bonus for the Jays. The Jays also completed Alex Rios' six-year, $64MM deal. This is another fine contract for Toronto, as they get four of Rios' free agent years at a below-market price. The Jays have a seventh year option for Rios at $13.5MM, with a $1MM buyout attached. The contract includes a complete no-trade clause for the first two years and a partial thereafter.

Hill, 26, broke out last year with a .291/.333/.459 line. He could be even better this season, with a shot at 20 home runs. His defense is among the best in the game at second base. Hill will reach arbitration for the first time after this season. Orlando Hudson might be a solid comparable. Hudson made $2.3MM, $3.9MM, and $6.25MM in his arbitration years.
