George Shultz on Abolition
2008-04-09 00:32:00 If you can get past the partisan material that plasters the National Review Online, Uncommon Knowledge's Peter Robinson recently held some interesting talks with former Secretary of State George Shultz on "A World Free of Nuclear Weapons." The interview online is composed of five segments, between two and eight minutes apiece, each addressing essentially one topic related to nukes. Episode 1 discusses the inefficacy of using the Cold War's bipolar, state-centric deterrence model in today's world. First of all, there are now more and maybe increasing numbers of countries with nuclear weapons.... [This is a content summary only. Click on the above link for the full post.]

The abolition of slavery
2008-01-31 18:52:00 Tomorrow, the 1st of February, we celebrate the 173rd anniversary of the abolition of slavery in Mauritius. This day means a lot to me; it is a public holiday. Well, on the other hand it's great that we are commemorating the abolition of slavery, a slavery that existed more than 200 years ago. This day could serve as a reminder of the fact that slavery was a reality somewhere in our country. But what about today? 200 years later... Slavery still exists. It exists in the form of dependencies. Those self-induced slaveries of which we cannot get rid. Some are addicted to nicotine, drugs, sex, the internet, their blogs, cleaning, hurting others... forms of addictions are unlimited yet they have one thing in common, they force us to forego a part of us, sometimes essential parts of us. Then one day you realise you have not fulfilled your dreams, you have not taken care of your kids, you have not learnt how to bake a cake... So on this day, tomorrow, at least on this one day, it would be ...

International Day for the Abolition of Slavery
2007-12-02 03:55:00 The International Day for the Abolition of Slavery, 2 December, recalls the date of the adoption in 1949 by the General Assembly, of the United Nations Convention for the Suppression of the Traffic in Persons and of the Exploitation of the Prostitution of Others [resolution 317(IV) of 2 December 1949].Abolition of the slavery in all its forms remains major priority for the Humanity. Slavery was, in a very real sense, the first international human rights issue to come to the fore. It led to the adoption of the first human rights laws and to the creation of the first human rights non-governmental organization. And yet despite the efforts of the international community to combat this abhorrent practice, it is still widely prevalent in all its insidious forms, old and new.Contemporary slavery takes various forms and affects people of all ages, sex and race. Human Trafficking, the exploitation of the prostitution, child abuse, child work and many others kinds of slavery and slavery-like ...

That's it, aucune interraction humain...

Abolition of Slavery
2006-12-19 09:48:01 Abolition of?what? Men do not need laws to abolish slavery. They voluntarily pick up iron chains, clasp them gleefully around their stout legs, and trudge around feeling more secure that way.
