It's six months since Labour's dodgy donations from David Abrahams (via third parties) came to light. At the time of "donor gate", Gordon Brown promised that the money would be returned. Friends the Secretary of State and her predecessors have not attended meetings in their official capacity since 2004 with Mr. David Abrahams or representatives of companies registered to Mr Abrahams.Now, is it just me, or is the answer to the question dodging something? The question asked if they had met, which I presume to mean, well... er.... met. The answer only tells us that they did not attend meetings in their official capacity. Have they met or not?

David Abrahams has released a statement claiming that he met with Jon Mendelsohn to discuss donating money in April. However, Mendelsohn has since issued a statement via his lawyer saying this was "absolutely untrue", adding that the two men did meet at a Jewish event and discussed what he called a "specific charity project to enable Muslims to visit Israel".Oh dear. It looks like the basic instinct of self preservation is coming to the fore. What will spill out of this back covering?A line from The Young Ones springs to mind: "it was not me - it was the other three!"

We've run a whole series of posts where we've asked questions about things that just don't seem to fit right.The national news at the moment features a whole host of - speaking frankly - shady, bent bastards who are prepared to open almost any door upon which money knocks.But buried in the story of Labour's relationship with David Abrahams is the matter of planning permission for a retail park he wanted built in County Durham, alongside the A1. Initially, the Highways Agency had blocked the scheme on the grounds it would cause congestion (!). In October 2006, they changed tack and removed their objection. The excellent Paul Mason touched on it briefly in last night's Newsnight.We are sure there are local similarities to this situation, some of which we've touched upon, some of which we've yet to look at. We've always smalled a rat, and eventually we will corner it and shine a light on it. You're welcome to help us.
