Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of Absurdity
2008-05-24 22:58:00 Spoilers follow. It’s been years since I’ve watched anything beyond mere segments of the individual installments, so I don’t profess to know anything about the essence of the Indiana Jones trilogy. Well, except for The Temple of Doom, which for some reason I always seem to catch on cable. But despite the camp of heart grabbing ...

Hibakusha: Reminding the young about the absurdity of war
2008-02-12 00:00:00 The day after the supply ship Oumi left Sasebo, Nagasaki Prefecture, for the Indian Ocean, Hideo Tsuchiyama, 82, was in town addressing nearly 100 listeners from a local agricultural cooperative. His theme: "What the Japanese Constitution means to me." It was the first speech he had ever given at Sasebo, nicknamed "military Sasebo" for the U.S. military base it hosts."It's too bad," he observed midway through his talk, "that there are no young people here." Most present looked to b ...
Absurdity, Allegory, And China -- Promising Blog
2008-02-02 14:13:00 Just came across for the first time, a most interesting China blog. It is called Absurdity, Allegory, and China, and it is hard to describe. I know, however, that I like it and that it is quite literary. It also clicks through to some great photographs. Near as I can tell, it is written by an English teacher (though I might be wrong about that) out of Tianjn (though I could also be wrong about that) named Jim Gourley (I am pretty sure I am right about that), who also goes by "Rudenoon." Anyway, this guy has serious insight and his blog is well worth a read. I urge you to read it all, but if you are going to be selective, I particularly liked the following posts: 1. "Here Come The Rats" -- History lives on in the present and that is why though the West sees this as the Chinese century, the Chinese themselves are less certain. A truly brilliant piece. 2. "Confucius Redux?" -- Best blog post yet on China's ant farm scandal. “China is a civilization pretending to be a...

2008-01-11 09:30:00 Great men of action . . . never mind on occasion being ridiculous; in a sense it is part of their job, and at times they all are. A prophet or an achiever must never mind an occasional absurdity, it is an occupational risk. -- Oswald Mosley, (1896-1980)

A Gem of Absurdity from walt-mearsheimer
2007-10-06 18:38:00 Finally got a look at walt-mearsheimer's magnum opus, a rather inflated tome called The Israel Lobby. Anyhow, I had a chance to read some of their slick but shallow arguments. Just leafing through the pages, I found a gem. In the chapter on Israel's moral case, they write that Israel's supporters could --in Israel's defense-- point to Arab threats to destroy Israel in several wars, 1948, 1967, 1973, etc. W-M admit that in 1948, some Arab leaders called for "throwing the Jews into the sea." But then they claim that the Arab leaders really didn't mean it. It was all just for domestic consumption, walt-mearsheimer claim. They go on to argue that this was because the Arab leaders knew that they couldn't destroy Israel. So here W-M make a leap of logic: Because the Arab leaders allegedly knew that the Arabs couldn't win the war against Israel, this means that they didn't want to destroy Israel.Of course the whole argument is full of holes like swiss cheese --and it stinks like mo...

Howard's stern about absurdity of gay claims
2007-09-13 00:00:00 Anna Nicole Smith's lawyer/pal/lover/something Howard K. Stern is calling claims that he and Larry Birkhead had any sort of gay relationship "absurd." So just to recap: A young girl is pulled from the sticks of Texas, befriends and later marries...

Obligatory "HSM2" Update: Taking Absurdity to New Levels
2007-08-23 20:53:00 My unwittingly "controversial" post, High School Musical 2: Chock Full of Gay, over on AOL's QueerSighted blog is propelling absurdity to new, delightful, and frightening extremes:1.) It has drawn more than 1,600 comments (so far) from mostly angry tweenyboppers, teenagers, and parents, making it one of the most responded to posts in the history of the blogosphere and redefining the term "the decline of Western civilization."2.) It was re-posted on a bunch of kids' MySpace pages; reported about on USA Today's entertainment blog, as well as other blogs; drew 200+ comments on LiveJournal's Ohnotheydidn't community board; and got picked up by Fark.com, where they've got their own little discussion going on.3.) It was talked about and quoted from this morning on the Kevin & Bean show on KROQ in Los Angeles (thanks for the tip, Bread and Bread).4.) It caused the traffic on my own blog, BAMBOO NATION, to increase by more than 2000 percent, and, although most of those visitors will n...

The Absurdity Of It All
2007-07-03 08:07:00 If you have ever been severely injured, two things can happen. When the pain hits, your mind is instantly overloaded with the screaming of damaged nerves and torn tissue and a intense pain beyond description. Or you might feel nothing at all, for a while at least, until the mind realigns itself to the shock ...
The absurdity of selling tutorials on selling tutorials and eBooks about In
2007-06-15 16:09:00 I don't know if I got the title right. It's confusing even to my self. I have done it and still doing it in some degree. But really, does it make sense? It's a bit like Network Marketing without the leverage. You just pass the information to the next in line. And the only one's that converts it into a lot of money, is the one's that recycle old marketing technics in a new cover and putting the biggest price tag to it. That of course after building them self a perception to you of being worth the price tag. Don't let them fool you into this mouse trap with a fake cheese as the award in hand. The fake cheese is the extreme picture and also the fact of the enormous amount of people longing for some "money making knowlegde". The fake cheese exist in large numbers also in Network Marketing and Wholesale or rather Drop shipping. If there is a conclusion of what I'm talking about here, except avoiding the situation hinted in the title, would be an appeal to you to accept ...
The Lal Masjid absurdity
2007-05-21 05:04:00 via Daily Times:The government-Lal Masjid drama has now gone beyond the realm of the absurd. It is amazing that followers of the two brothers, Maulanas Abdul Aziz and Abdul Rasheed Ghazi, can violate the writ of the state with impunity while the government, which has no qualms in using force against its political opponents, tucks tail and runs at the slightest threat. Consider the happenings since last Friday: the followers of the two clerics kidnapped four police officials and demanded that eleven of their brood, currently in official custody, be released in return. The government immediately went into its usual defensive mode and began negotiating with the Lal Masjid administration to try and secure the release of the detained cops. The entire episode was reminiscent of March 28 when the Lal Masjid ?Mujahideen? kidnapped two policemen. In the same drill procedure this time too, the Lal Masjid has managed to get four of its men released in return for two of the kidnapped policemen....
