Academy Award-Nominated ?Beaufort? Ponders Question of Why We Fight
2008-03-26 05:41:00 CHICAGO ? History eludes us. It?s what happens when we?re busy making other plans. In his new film ?Beaufort,? director Joseph Cedar turns his lens toward the history and misery of a Mideastern soldier?s outpost eight years ago that was both defended and attacked while highlighting the human element that has to endure when protecting the territory of warfare. Beaufort is an ancient castle area at the southern border of Lebanon. It has been an energy center for conflict and has been occupied by various armies for more than 1,000 years. The film is set in the year 2000 when Beaufort is occupied by the Israeli Defense Force (IDF), which has held the position since the 1982 war in southern Lebanon. Hezbollah ? the Islamic, anti-Israeli paramilitary organization ? is bearing down on the outpost heavily with mortar shelling and guerilla tactics in anticipation of a planned IDF withdrawal. Academy Award-Nominated âCity of Godâ Spawns Evocative Brazilian Slum F
2008-02-29 09:14:00 CHICAGO â The plight of the people in the hard-hitting Brazilian film âCity of Menâ is akin with its plight to make you aware it even exists. This can be said about many great films thatâll touch you and leave you better than you were before despite not having the luxury of omnipresent advertising. For those of us fortunate enough to read this review or learn about âCity of Menâ in another way, youâd appreciate first soaking up its extraordinary evolution. The subtitled film, which opens in markets including Chicago on Friday, centers on the lives of best friends Acerola (Douglas Silva) and Laranjinha (Darlan Cunha) just before turning 18. They celebrate their birthdays not just because itâs another birthday but because itâs another year theyâve survived their hostile, gun-laden lives. Coen Bros. use Final Cut Pro to edit Academy Award winning "No Country for
2008-02-28 17:07:00 There's a great story over at MacWorld about Joel and Ethan Coen's Academy Award winning Movie "No Country for Old Men", and how it was edited entirely in Final Cut Pro.There has been a lot of talk in the last couple of years about Apples hardware triumphs, like the Intel Mac, the iPod and the iPhone. But there is more to Apple than just hardware one of the unsung heros for Apple is its professional line of applications like Final Cut Pro. The Coen brothers proved during the making of No Country for Old Men just how influential a Mac and the right software can be during the editing process. The movie won four Oscars at this years Academy Awards, including Best Picture. In fact, it is the first movie edited with a completely digital workflow on Mac to win the Oscar. They [Apple] made it really easy for us we cut now much the same way we cut on film [using Final Cut Pro]. Its hugely faster, said Ethan Coen. The Coen brothers arent stopping there they ar...

Academy Award 2008 - Red All Over
2008-02-26 10:10:00 The best word to describe the red-carpet fashion at the Academy Awards: Red. Katherine Heigl, Helen Mirren, Miley Cyrus, Ruby Dee, Anne Hathaway and Heidi Klum were among the stars in red gowns Sunday night at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles. Shades of plum were worn by Cate Blanchett and Jessica Alba. "The actresses went regal and royal with rich reds and purples," said Oscar.com fashion analyst Tom Julian. The other buzzword? Safe. "I thought people looked generally really good?and really safe," Hal Rubenstein, fashion director at InStyle magazine, told The Associated Press. "I don't know if it had to do with the mood out there with the strike just over and parties canceled, but in fashion now so much is classy red.Anne Hathaway arrives for the 80th Academy Awards Sunday, Feb. 24, 2008, in Los Angeles. Ex-Stripper wins Academy Award
2008-02-26 04:54:00 On Sunday night a former stripper won an Academy Award for best original screenplay. Over the last year the internet has been abuzz about ex stripper Diablo Cody. As a one time exotic dancer in Minnesota she wrote about her experiences first on her blog, The Pussy Ranch which eventually was turned into her first novel, Candy Girl: A Year in the Life of an Unlikely Stripper. The book garnered rave reviews but hit was her screenplay for the Academy Award nominated movie, Juno that really brought her much attention lately.Cody, whose real name is Brook Busey-Hunt graduated from the University of Iowa?s media studies program and has written for various websites and magazines over the years. I remember coming across The Pussy Ranch along time ago but never got into reading it. I recently got her book which I intend to read if I can ever find the time. Juno was an OK movie, not sure if it deserved best screenplay though but whatever. Nice to see another rags to riches Hollywood story. Dia...

A Night og Glory - The 80th Academy Award 2008 Night
2008-02-25 16:03:00 Most of the action on the Oscar stage is choreographed and rehearsed. Backstage is another story. In the wings of the Kodak Theatre, stars grapple with nerves, have impromptu meetings with colleagues and make last-minute adjustments to their hair and makeup. Presenters and performers mingle with brand-new Oscar winners while dodging props and cameramen. What you see on TV is Hollywood magic. Backstage is like a home movie, where everybody knows each other and they're all excited about putting on a show.----------------OSCAR SHOCK: As Marion Cotillard stepped offstage with the best-actress Oscar for "La Vie En Rose," Forest Whitaker enveloped her in a hug that lasted at least a minute. Then they looked at each other and laughed."I'm shaking, like wow," Cotillard trembled.Stopping by the backstage "thank you" cam, she expressed her gratitude in French and studied her Oscar."I'm shaking so much I think I can't talk," she said.Whitaker led her arm-in-arm behind the stage on the winner...

Academy award nominee Heath Ledger ("Brokeback Mountain") found dead in app
2008-01-23 00:06:00 This is another sad story of a celebrity who seem to have everything: fame, fortune and fans. Yet he had nothing with inner peace and happiness. The star and Academy nominee for his role in the film Brokeback Mountain, Heath Ledger, was found dead today in his apartment in New York City due to a drug overdose. He was found by his housekeeper in his bedroom with pills strewn all over the room. When paramedics responded, the actor was in full cardiac arrest. They attempted to perform CPR on him, but were unsuccessful. He was pronounced dead at the scene. It's shocking and a tragedy, especially given that the gifted, handsome twenty-eight-year-old actor was a new father and with a new movie. He plays The Joker in the upcoming Batman film, "The Dark Knight". But he will always be best known groundbreaking role as Ennis in "Brokeback Mountain." May he rest in peace.

Glamour and style on the 79th Academy Awards (2007) Red Carpet
2007-03-07 18:39:05 Even if they have an Oscar nomination or not, they are chosen to talk about something, to present one of the awards or they are just invited, the so well known celebrities of ?today? will definitely impress, though not always in a good way (maybe it depends on the mood), with their glamorous or outrageous style. From their clothes, jewelries, hairstyle and partner to the way they walk and talk, everything is a big show off and commercial for their imagine. I don?t say it?s something unusual or not normal for our times but, please, we can at least fake it a little bit. In the past few years this is more like a ?celebrity?s parade?, the Hollywood fashion stage and the reveal of the trends for the ?new born? year, then a Festivity for the work and progress of the Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. I can bet that most of the population of the globe knows what Nicole Kidman wore rather than which the nominations were for best motion picture of the year?.but, if this is how they like it th...

Yes, it is really sad to realize that the whole Academy Awards show is not about who?s getting the Oscars or what for but about who?s coming, who?s best dressed, who?s the most glamorous person to walk the red carpet, who?s coming with who, what they say and how they say it and, of course, the after party :). ...

Contemplating the Academy Awards Ceremony
2007-02-26 19:44:00 I know, you’ve been just dying to find out and so I’m here to tell you. Yes, I watched the Oscars last night. I did. I enjoyed it, particularly when I fell asleep at midnight and the show was still going on (hey, I had to get up and go to work this morning). But, no, I’m not being tongue-in-cheek or sarcastic, I did enjoy the show. I thought Ellen was really, really funny and despite the ridiculous number of montages and stuff I didn’t need to exist as a part of the show, Ellen was able to keep me from turning the channel. I like that Ellen.Did Ellen make a mistake and say Penelope Cruz was from Mexico? I’m not sure, it went by too quickly for me to say definitively. The upside of it was though that Ellen came out to clear up any misunderstanding and Penelope got more screen time, and that’s really all the upside anyone could ever ask for. And, Ellen in the audience? Great stuff. Her with ...

Al Gore Arrives at Academy Awards in GoreMobile Limo
2007-02-26 16:09:02 Al Gore, upon arriving at the Academy Awards in his Nobel-Prize-Winning "Al Gore Mobile Limo" (also known as the GoreMobile Limo), smiled jauntily as the color green (or something with a greenish color) covered the red carpet behind him as he strode into the theatre for the 2007 Academy Awards. Billions of people on this tiny planet among billions of planets in billions of galaxies throughout the universe share his anticipation in awaiting his receipt of the Oscar for his documentary, "An Inconvenient Truth," which reveals "Da Gorgle Code" exposing Bush's rape of Mother Earth using a top-secret heat-energy weapon (Nano-Algorithmic Technology Universally Readjusting Environments-- code named, "NATURE"). As he strode into the theatre, he dismissed as "false" the recent rumors of a stink surrounding his use of the GoreMobile Limo. Gore said, "I always make a carbon deposit whenever I travel in the GoreMobile. Inde...
