2012-01-11 08:29:00 In a tie-up aimed squarely at promotion, Google has announced a tie-up with public Wi-Fi provider O-Zone Networks. Recently Google upped its Advertising campaign even though it was growing steadily. This tie-up seems to be in line with the motto of encouraging mobile Internet usage and getting consumer experiences of Google+ and YouTube. As part of the promotional campaign lasting three months, all Google+ users will get free and unlimited access to Google+ on the Wi-Fi networks at all O-Zone hotspots across the country. Currently, O-Zone own and operates a total of 5000 hotspots out of which about 2500 are Public-Access. Access to video, though has been restricted to a mere 10 minutes tops each week! O-Zone is currently in talks with Google for a long-term contract. Google has always believed in the power of mobile Internet. Further, between 3G fiasco & 4G anticipation, public access WiFi is rapidly gaining acceptance for its speed & economy. Moreover, the newer & che...

Using CORS to access ASP.NET services across domains
2011-12-19 07:25:00 Work on client-side applications long enough and it’s just about inevitable that you’ll eventually want to make an AJAX request that breaches the browser’s XMLHttpRequest security restrictions. Free Access To Your Twitter Account Soon To Become A Reality On Airtel
2011-12-02 07:58:00 If you prefer tweets over status updates and your tweets are frequent, then there is some excellent news for you. Airtel is slated to launch a free service, which will allow you to access your Twitter account on your mobile phone. 1st March, 2012 is the date when this service will go live. We had earlier announced on WATBlog that such a move is on the anvil. A debate has been raging in India, among experts, regarding the exact number of active internet users in the country. One fact that all agree with is that mobile internet is growing rapidly in India and it has the potential to become the primary internet access point for the majority of Indians. Also, smartphone penetration is extremely low in the country and most of the over 850 million connections are active on basic feature phones. These ground realities further highlight why Airtel’s latest move is a step in the right direction. Come March and over 170 million Airtel subscribers will enjoy free access to Twitter. They can...

Twitter CEO Says They Are Working On ‘Data Liberation’ & Access To
2011-10-18 09:24:00 Twitter has grown by leaps and bounds in terms of people signing up on the site, although the micro-blogging site offers few features besides posting tweets, pics and videos. Feature updates which are so common to competitors like Facebook and Google+, are hardly ever doled out on Twitter. At the ongoing Web 2.0 summit’s Speaker dinner O’Reilly writer Alex Howard spoke to Twitter CEO, Dick Costolo about the problems he faced ‘liberating’ his tweets, accessing his tweet and DM history. Costolo did own up to the fact the this feature had been disregarded earlier. He explained, “We want to be able to access old Tweets and old DMs, we just have to prioritize the work. It’s just a matter of priorities; we need to get to the point when we’ll be able to do this“. Google has their own ‘Data Liberation Front’ whereas Facebook also lets you liberate your data (but not that easily). Twitter lags far behind in this regard. The reason that Data Liberation is a big...

Be Careful The Next Time You Access Your Bank Account On Your Smartphone
2011-09-08 09:34:00 Mobile devices (smartphones, tablets, etc) have become an important part of our lives. People love to be ‘connected’ on the move. In a country like India, where internet penetration is a mere 6.5% or about 65 million, as many as 10 million have registered themselves for inter-bank mobile payments. Currently 20 banks in the country provide this service and another 15 are contemplating such a service. For example : Union Bank of India recently join hands with Electracard to provide payment gateway for online transaction. The use of mobile banking in India is the highest in the Asia-Pacific region. In such a scenario safety becomes of paramount importance. The safety issues that we generally face while performing monetary transactions on a laptop or PC hold true for a mobile device as well. A new laptop generally has an anti-virus pre-installed, but smartphones lack such safety features. Most smartphone users do not make the effort to install an anti-virus. Hackers...

Government Insists On Access To BlackBerry Emails And TRAI Postpones NCPR I
2011-02-01 12:20:00 BlackBerry Saga Continues…. Yesterday was January 31st – the deadline for RIM to have provided Indian Security Agencies with access to all its services. Last week, RIM reiterated that it would not be technically feasible for the company to provide access to its Corporate Email Services. So far the company has been able to successfully provide access to voice calls, BlackBerry Messenger services, chat services and text messages for snooping. We have constantly followed the back and forth between the two sides and for now it looks like the stalemate will continue. Yesterday the Home Minister, P. Chidamabaram insisted that RIM provide access to its enterprise email services just as they have done with other services. Sachin Pilot added that India is in no position to compromise on matters concerning security and that it cannot afford to have any loopholes. After this many papers reported that RIM’s saw its share prices drop. The company has had a rough week. China&...

BlackBerry Refuses Access To Corporate Emails
2011-01-28 08:05:00 The common thread that has run through this story so far has been RIM’s insistence that providing security agencies with access to its corporate email services is not possible. Even when they agreed to grant access to its messenger services there was a lack of clarity over what would happen with the corporate email. While both sides maintained that they would continue to work together to find a solution to give Indian Security Agencies lawful access to it, there has been no headway. And now, just before the January 31st deadline BlackBerry maker RIM has refused to let them access their corporate email services. Last week, we wrote that RIM’s Vice President for industry, government and university relations, Robert E Crow was on his way to India to discuss the leaks issue and take the talks forward. He has now said that there is No Solution – it isn’t technically feasible. He also went on to say that inaccurate leaks about the company willing to comply with In...

Bharti Airtel Ties-Up With ip.access For Picocells – Readying For MNP
2010-09-06 12:45:00 A few days ago, Bharti Airtel took a big step towards customer satisfaction by stopping bulks SMS services. This was great news for customers of the telecom giants as more and more mobile users around India were troubled through such services. Being the first in the industry to do so has definitely given Airtel an edge over other services providers in the industry (though there might still be some disgruntled customers regarding service). Now in order to one up the customer satisfaction, Airtel have tied-up with UK-based ip.access to bring Picocell technology to our country. What are Picocells? How many times has it happened to you that you walk into an office building or a mall only to find that you have no network. This problem can be solved with picocells which are basically wireless communication systems that cover small areas like the ones mentioned earlier. In GSM networks, picocell base units connect to a base controller station, which in turn performs radio resource managem...

30% Indians Access Social Media Via Mobiles: Social Media Survey
2010-06-18 09:38:00 A very interesting survey has been recently completed by Indiabiz News & Research Services (INRS). The survey was conducted with the aim of tracking the emerging social media behavior in the youth. 350 respondents were questioned across the 4 Indian metropolitans Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai and Bangalore. The survey has yielded some very interesting numbers and results. One of the first few conclusions of the survey was something that everyone has realized by now which is the unchallenged popularity of Facebook. It topped the list of the most used platform for social networking. But the numbers regarding the behavior of these respondents on the social sites were even more interesting. Among others, the survey reveals the following points: • 90% of the users join such sites to follow or stay in touch with their friends. • Almost 80% follow their friends for their pictures. (now we know why the name facebook is so attractive maybe). • 63% of those who took the poll have ...

Should Congress pass a law requiring equal restroom access for women?
2010-05-13 18:05:00 If necessary, yes. I'm for potty parity. As explained in this story from the Washington Times:Some call it "potty parity," others label it "porcelain proportionality"--but a bipartisan group in Congress, braving potential public ridicule, says it's time federal buildings provide equal bathroom access for women, who are currently burdened by long lines and the need for more time once they get in the door So, critics of big government are expected to line up to criticize another government intrusion where common sense would suffice. But, here, I'll depart from my fellow big government critics and say: "It's about time!"Common sense should suffice here. Is there not a man or woman in the world who knows that the lines to the public...

Tata DoCoMo Provides Free Access to Major Social Networks On Buddynet Plan
2010-02-24 11:58:00 Tata DoCoMo is indeed following on its industry breaking moves by giving away completely free access to Major social Networks like – Facebook, Twitter, Orkut & LinkedIn through its Buddynet Plan. The plan will also offer free usage of Nimbuzz chatting app on its network by Buddynet subscribers. Buddynet Plan was unveiled a month ago which allows mobile subscribers to call other buddynet users at preferably low rates of just 1 paisa/6 seconds for Local calls and 1 paisa/2 seconds for STD calls. The plan entails weekly rent of Rs.7 and seems to be banking on youth to grow its subscriber base. The pricing is pretty intelligent in a way it requires other invitees (during cheap calls) to also be a subscriber to buddynet services . The free access to Social networks and chatting will provide it enough buzz for its youth-oriented service plan as majority of youth are now glued to social networks through mobile Web. The access will however be restricted to stated social networks o...

Today we discover that DeKalb County has won $13.2 million, the first of the $400 million for which Illinois eligible,Chicago wants $100 million of that to create free public wireless networks across the city.Which raises the question: why should taxpayers pay for free public access for some? Why subsidize those in Chicago who can afford access? Why free access for Chicago and not, say, Lake Forest, or Harvey? And this: Why is this a government function at all? We're each responsible for our own phone service, aren't we? And why is it stimulus money? Is...

Class Action Lawsuit against AT&T over taxes on internet access
2010-02-06 00:02:00 A class action lawsuit has been filed against AT&T alleging violation of state and federal law prohibiting taxation on internet access. According to the complaint, AT&T improperly charges Illinois customers state and local sales tax on internet access on its monthly bills. It lists the charges as a separate charge on bills to customers, the complaint states. The complaint states that the Internet Fairness Act prohibits state and local governments from imposing taxes on internet access and, while Illinois law imposes a tax on telecommunications service, it does not impose it if it is already prohibited by federal law. Is Regional Content Key To Internet Growth? Or Is It Access To Fast Cheap I
2009-12-08 12:49:00 Well its an often repeated discussion that I have had the good (and sometimes bad) fortune of attending across various panel discussions around the growth of the internet. So it wasn’t surprising when the same discussion cropped up during the recent IAMAI Digital Summit. There was a contradiction of views wherein R Sundar of Times Internet felt that regional content was necessary for the internet to grow as the english newspapers only reached out to 22 million people and a large part of the country read content in hindi and several other languages. Murugavel of Bharat Matrimony felt that regional language centric sites did not help as the keyboards were in english and people will not type in regional language. While this debate happened there was a statement made by Ajit Balakrishnan in another panel wherein he said “When BSNL goes to sell broadband in tier 2 cities, consumers ask ‘what’ll we do with it.’” This points to a lack of use case for th...

Google Will Limit Free Access to Paid News Sites: New Opportunity for Small
2009-12-03 09:44:00 The Google – Print News story is reminiscent of some epic Greek war, sans any physical violence and fought on a battleground that is essentially just 2 digits long. The last move from the news publishing side was of their King Rupert Murdoch banning any Google bot to step in his territory. Worse (or better) still he has been asking other peers to follow in his steps in this corporate warfare of not dominance but survival and profitability. Now either seeing sense in the news folks words or bowing to their might (the risk of not having any authentic content to provide to the users being high), Google has announced that it will limit a user’s access to content on a paid news site. According to BBC, Newspaper publishers will now be able to set a limit on the number of free news articles people can read through Google. Under the First Click Free programme, publishers can now prevent unrestricted access to subscription websites. Users who click on more than five articles i...
