Web Accessibility a Universal Goal!
2008-06-14 02:33:00 by: Mr. Nidal A. BousalehOver the last decay, an increase number of research were conducted to determine ways Information Technology can assist in meeting special needs to ensure universal accessibility. Findings to date suggest that by being more knowledgeable about accessibility issues, Web designers and developers are able to accommodate end users with special needs. As we enter the knowledge age, it is no longer acceptable that people with limited or no vision are on their own when it comes to accessing the web, nor those with mobility problems are on their own when it comes to use a hardware. To ignorewebsite accessibility raises moral, business, and legal issues. It is morally wrong to discriminateagainst disabled people on the web simply through lack of thought, consideration, or awareness. Many business web sites designed without considering accessibility issues result in loss of revenue. Some countries, such as the US, UK, and Australia has introduced legislation that requir...
Turkey benefits from 'low prices and accessibility'
2008-06-09 02:00:00 Those looking for an investment property in the sun may wish to consider houses or apartments in Turkey. The country offers apartments in holiday resorts from as little as £19,000 and with plenty of budget flights available, purchasing a property in Turkey may be a wise investment, according to the Sunday Mail. Turkey currently has extremely competitive property prices, particularly in relation to its Mediterranean rivals, such as holiday favourites Spain and Portugal. Stuart Malloy, who recently bought an apartment in Didim, said: "I'd been looking to buy abroad for years but the cost of property in the Mediterranean and the Canaries really put me off. In addition to the holiday essentials such as sun, sand and pools, Turkey has a wealth of alternative activities, including historical and cultural attractions. With government plans to invest 200 million lira (£81 million) to increase tourist numbers two-fold in the next 15 years, purchasing rental property n...

AT&T Introduces New iPhone Text Accessibility Plan for Customers with Disab
2008-04-30 17:24:00 The iPhone is now even more accessible for Americans who are deaf or have a hearing or speech disability. Today, AT&T Inc. AT&T adds Text Accessibility Plan for iPhone
2008-04-29 18:28:00 If you’re deaf or hard of hearing, there’s been nothing preventing you from getting an iPhone, but you might have been a little bit miffed that you had to pay for voice service that you’d never use. No longer, however, as AT&T has announced today their new Text Accessibility Plan for iPhone. The TAP plan costs $40/month and lets you ditch the voice part of the plan, while adding unlimited SMS text messages and holding onto the iPhone’s full unlimited data plan. That works out pretty evenly, since both unlimited SMS and the iPhone’s data plan usually cost about $20 apiece. Just in case you want to lend your phone to someone else, you can still make phone calls at a cost of $0.40/minute. And you can still get Visual Voicemail, too (though I’m not sure how useful that will be to most hearing impaired users). Not just anybody can sign up for the plan, however. You’ll need to fill out an eligibility form (PDF link), which requires you get...

The problem of accessibility
2008-04-07 04:59:00 Last summer while traveling, my daughter Kate and I were using a public restroom, and I heard a woman calling out to us from under the stall. “Hello? Hello?” “Yes?” I asked, wondering if she was all right. “Can you hear me?” she asked. “Yes, are you okay?” I asked her. We came out of our stall and I stood by the door of hers, concerned she was trapped or had fallen or worse. But she began talking more, and I realized with a rush of embarrassment that she was on her cell phone. As I led Kate over to the sink to wash, I heard the woman say, “Yes, I’m in the bathroom at the gas station. We’re on our way....” and so on. She flushed while she was on the phone (as had I, unknowingly) and walked out, not even glancing at us as she made a beeline for the door. Later I thought about why I was embarrassed, when clearly she was the one transgressing social rules by using her phone in the bathroom. Really, are any of us so important that we need to be t...
11 Accessibility Tips
2008-04-01 06:02:00 When developing a site we all sometimes overlook simple methods that we can use to make our site more accessible. Here's a list of tips that should really be used by all of us, myself included.1. Structure your document so it can be read without stylesheetThis is the most important tip. Be extra careful of properly structuring your page. Use headings to describe content sections, use lists, make sure that you page has the logical flow. Don't rely on stylesheet to create that flow for you.2. Separate your linksSeparate consecutive links with more than just a white space. Screen readers tend to interpret two (or more) non separated consecutive links as one.3. Meaningful links When read out of context, make sure that your links make sense. i.e. use "read full article" instead of "click here".4. Include skip to content linkPermit users to skip repetitive navigation links. If you have the same navigation at the top of the page this allow users to go directly to the content instead of h...

Website Accessibility
2008-02-25 14:59:00 Website Accessibility on the internet is just as important as it is in the real world. It is about supporting disabled visitors, but that is not the only reason for making a website accessible. An accessible website can be accessed by people with different web browsers, PDA's, and cell phones. A common misconception is that by making a website accessible, it will be not as attractive as a website that is not accessible. That is not the case. Website Accessibility does not need to affect presentation at all! Using semantic, well structured XHTML will take you a long the way towards creating an accessible website. To get an idea of how accessible a page is, try viewing it in a text-based browser like Lynx to see if the content still makes sense. This is far from the only Website Accessibility check you need to do, but it's a good start. Just imagine having a sight or dexterity disability, and visiting a website that is not accessible. You'd be upset - and discriminated against! Fed...
Helping others understand web accessibility
2008-02-22 05:44:00 When I hold workshops for people who want to learn more about web standards and accessibility, I often notice that the attendants really have tried to improve their accessibility knowledge. But they get overwhelmed when they go to the official documentation from the W3C and try to understand it.Mike Cherim brings this up in Making Web Accessibility Accessible, an article that is over a year old but still just as relevant. He notes that accessibility is harder to get into than it should be for several reasons, one of which being that the documentation (WCAG 1.0) is hard to understand. And it doesn’t look like things will get much easier when WCAG 2.0 is released and becomes the norm.In addition to the documentation problem, Mike also mentions the unhelpful attitude held by some people who seem like they don’t want to help the less experienced, the misguided or the misinformed, and instead choose to criticise them. I see it too sometimes, and I have probably been guilty of doing t...

Accessibility boosts Italy's appeal
2008-02-07 01:00:00 Good transport links to Italy are helping to attract property investors to the country, an expert has stated.Fund management firm Pirelli RE Agency stated that the Italian market was proving to be a popular choice with British buyers because it was very easy to reach.Mario Rozza, marketing and communication director at the firm, said low-cost airlines now offered routes to "virtually every" part of the country, which means that most locations are highly accessible and affordable to get to.This, he stated, would help ensure that the "strong interest" in Italian property ownership continues during the coming year at least.Mr Rozza added that the range of properties currently on the market "has never been larger".This comes shortly after the Telegraph reported that the accessibility of a region was one of the main issues considered by property buyers when choosing where to invest.

Microsoft Releases Tools to Boost Web Accessibility
2008-01-18 20:04:00 Microsoft on Thursday is expected to release a new set of developer tools for products that improve the Internet's accessibility for people with disabilities. The tools, called UI Automation, can be used royalty-free, according to Microsoft's Windows Accessibility lead Norm Hodne, as long as the resulting applications are built to perform within all platforms, e.g. Windows or Linux.Microsoft formally donated the UI (user interface) Automation developer tools to the Accessibility Interoperability Alliance (AIA), an engineering working group that the software giant helped form last November in partnership with tech companies like Oracle, Novell, Hewlett-Packard and Adobe Systems, as well as assistive-technology developers like GW Micro. The working group's mission is to pave the way for standards in the industry for text-to-speech software, screen readers and other assistive products.Microsoft's UI Automation comes nearly 12 years after the company's last developer tools for acce...

Brief description of Web Accessibility
2007-12-26 05:29:00 What exactly is Web Accessibility ?Simply put, web accessibility is about making a site accessible to the largest range of people possible. For the majority of website owners, this is simply good business sense. After all, the more people you have using your site the better.Making a website accessible involves removing potential barriers to access and one of the best ways of doing this is to build sites to 'web standards'.Who does this affect ?People often think that web accessibility relates only to people with physical disabilities. Although they are often most affected by poorly designed sites, accessibility is a much wider issue and at a fundamental level, affects us all. * Blind, visually impaired and colour blind people are probably the most obvious group of individuals affected by accessibility issues. This group also makes up a very large percentage of web surfers * People with physical disabilities, such as those with impaired mobility * People surfing...

What is Web Accessibility?
2007-11-13 06:00:00 According to Wikipedia, "web accessibility refers to the practice of making websites usable by people of all abilities and disabilities. When sites are correctly designed, developed and edited, all users can have equal access to information and functionality. "For example, when a site is coded with semantically meaningful HTML, with textual equivalents provided for images and with links named meaningfully, this helps blind users using text-to-speech software and/or text-to-Braille hardware." In other words, to make the most of your website for all people, you have to make it usable for all. And that means adding textual equivalents, eliminating animated graphics (not Flash), and using pleasing backgrounds and text colors, among other things. The Town of Enfield, Conn., was recently certified to be in compliance with the Accessibility Policy for Connecticut State Government Web Sites, Version 4.0. Dreamweaver's Approach To Website Accessibility
2007-11-12 11:47:00 Accessibility, in the context of websites, refers to the degree to which the content you add to your web site can be accessed by your audience; all of them, not just the able bodied ones and those with 20/20 vision. Accessible websites offer good support for screen readers, cater for users who browse the web without viewing graphics and who wish to magnify the text on your pages to a level comfortable for their eyesight. There are a number of features within Dreamweaver which help web developers ensure that their pages are accessible. The program can be set up so that it will automatically offer you a series of accessibility options whenever you add an image, media element or form field to a page. There is also a built-in utility which you can use to check whether your pages contain elements which are not accessible. The main settings in Dreamweaver are located by choosing Edit - Preferences. On the left of the Preferences screen there are a series of categories. In the General ca...
