Federal government debt soars
2011-12-27 02:12:00 What does this tale of rising federal government debt mean for the country? Dr Subramaniam Pillay concludes in a recent analysis for Aliran Monthly: A prudent Malaysian government would have saved a sizeable portion of the petroleum revenue from the past few decades as a fund for rainy days. Many other countries have done this. [Read more]

Rank-and-file Sathya Sai Organization Members Are Also Culpable
2011-08-22 04:06:00 Each of us is responsible for his or her own actions. Irrespective of any mitigating circumstances. If ever there were a time for the introspection Sai Baba himself advocated that his devotees should do, it is now. He, moreover, taught that they should not become attached to his form. Or his miracles. And yet here, ...
Towards Accountability Of Sathya Sai Baba?s Accomplices: A Call To Legal Ac
2011-07-16 12:59:00 A formidable legal challenge is being mounted against those who aided and abetted Sathya Sai Baba in what many say are heinous and immoral acts against boys and young men, what to mention other abuses. Among those connected with this legal action, which is very well-funded indeed, are those with compelling accounts of sexual and ...

Cultic Behaviour and Lack of Accountability (Sathya Sai Organization Exampl
2009-12-21 21:52:00 In mid 1982, at Puttaparthi, I spoke to two prominent devotees about concerns being raised sub voce that Sathya Sai Baba had been engaged in sexual activities with young males. One of the reports was that he been involved in such activities since he was young, and that this was quite common knowledge within Puttaparthi and district. The two were Richard Bayer, then a high official in the Sathya Sai Organization, organization, and (the late) Howard Murphet, Australian journalist and renowned author of several books on Sai Baba. Murphet was typically gracious but Bayer was shockingly rude, chastising me for daring to breathe such a topic, then turning angrily on his heel and striding away. Bayer's deplorable behaviour implied that one may not, with any trust, raise issues with Sathya Sai Baba's handpicked leaders.

Sathya Sai Fails To Save Satyam
2009-01-14 00:57:00 The massive Satyam corruption scandal engulfs India in a sad and chilling way somewhat remindful of WorldCom, Parmalat, and Enron. Sad, for example, because of the tens of thousands of talented workers whose future is under heavy cloud, and chilling because it reveals but a small part of the disordered ?backyard? that Sathya Sai Baba famously said he would first ?clean up? before transforming the rest of the world prior to quitting it circa AD 2022. And, again sadly, because such scandals can also obscure many instances of probity and quality of service.

Accountability within the Church
2008-12-21 18:24:00 Rebecca Hancock has been in the news a lot lately, and its brought church discipline into the limelight. I know for myself I did struggle with this, and not because I don?t realize that Jesus wouldn?t condone having relations with your boyfriend out of wedlock. Scripture is clear about this subject. To me it was the way she described the events that bothered me.I?m NOT going to say that I?m 100% right here, but there are items in this story that do tend to bother me. I got the impression that she had been a member of this church for sometime, and during this time she was given a mentor. I think that?s awesome! She spoke of how she never realized how they deal with church discipline, and that portion was never made clear to her. I don?t know if she was new Christian, and she had never heard of such a concept. If they do indeed use this tool, and if you look at the size of their membership it can?t be uncommon to know about it. To me this would be discussed if in nothing else...
Accountability of Rulers
2008-09-28 09:47:00 Anwar SyedActions have consequences that catch up with us sooner or later. But this law of nature does not seem to apply equally to rulers. Presidents and prime ministers often get away with the improprieties they may have committed. The procedure for punishing their wrongdoing is very tedious. An American president may be removed for his violations of the law through impeachment by the House of Representatives and trial in the Senate. Actually, no president has ever been forced out of office. President Andrew Johnson was impeached in 1866 but the move to convict him failed by one vote in the Senate. Richard Nixon, facing the danger of impeachment over the Watergate break-in scandal in 1974, resigned. The House of Representatives impeached Bill Clinton for perjury in connection with his affair with a White House intern, Monica Lewinsky, but the Senate acquitted him.In parliamentary democracies a prime minister may be removed by his own party or by the voters at the next election. Ano...

Want of Accountability
2008-07-20 07:44:00 Anwar SyedPrices of oil, gas, electricity, food and many other items of daily consumption have risen enormously. Millions of people are going hungry, and there are reports every day of persons killing themselves and their families because they had nothing to eat.The economy is languishing and workers are losing jobs. The ?common man? is being asked to tighten his belt. But those calling for the tightening of belts are doing nothing of the kind in their own domains. On July 7 Prime Minister Gilani journeyed to Malaysia to attend a conference of eight developing Muslim countries called the D8. It was all right for him to show up there but it was something else to have taken with him an entourage of 55 persons, including numerous parliamentarians. The conference passed resolutions in the nature of pious platitudes. It resolved to meet global challenges through ?innovative cooperation?. Participants cautioned the world that food shortage could pose a threat to its peace and good order. Th...

More on the mysterious oil subsidies
2008-06-07 17:40:00 Some more light on this mysterious subsidy thing: Most of the country’s oil fields contain low-sulfur, high quality “sweet” crude. This from The Star: Commenting on the fuel price increase, the Petronas boss said the corporation did ...
