Amino Acids (BCAA?s) and your Workouts
2008-05-28 16:37:00
First off, lets talk about what BCAA’s are: The idea behind BCAA supplementation relates to an occurence known as central fatigue, which holds that mental fatigue in the brain can adversely affect physical performance in endurance events. This central fatigue theory suggests that low blood levels of Branched Chain Amino Acids may accelerate the production of ... Essential Fatty Acids May Aid In Weight Loss
2008-05-12 22:00:00
"Essential Fatty Acids May Aid In Weight Loss" was written by Larry R. Miller. This post is about Fatty Acids.Fatty Acids The fact that essential fatty acids may aid in weight loss has been missed by many so-called experts for many years. However the part played by fatty acids, particularly by those in Omega 3, 6 and 9 oils, is now understood and they have been accepted as part of a health weight loss diet. However, what are the reasons for people to lose weight? The cosmetic reasons are obvious, but what other incentives are there? Health is the major incentive, of course, since excessive weight places more of a strain on the heart. It is a proven fact that the risk of death increases with your weight. If you are obese, you are more likely to have high blood pressure, and will almost certainly die younger than somebody who is of average body weight. You are also more likely to have more problems with cholesterol levels, since the obese have decreased levels of the HDL lipids that tak...

Stop Eating Fish Oil! Omega-3 Fatty Acids Don't Help Prevent Crohn's Relaps
2008-04-09 00:23:00
April 8, 2008 - Taking omega-3 fatty acids can be helpful for many things, but maybe not for preventing a relapse of Crohn's disease. Two related studies show that omega-3s are not effective in preventing inflammation associated with Crohn's disease. Crohn's disease is an inflammatory bowel disease that can affect anywhere along the digestive tract. With Crohn's, a patient may experience periods of remission and recurrence. Researchers looked at whether high doses of omega-3s worked as maintenance therapy in patients with Crohn's disease in remission. A total of 738 people participated in two studies. No significant differences were observed between the two treatment groups in either trial. In one study, 363 participants were assigned randomly to take either a daily omega-3 supplement or a placebo for 52 weeks. In the second study, 375 participants took the pills for 58 weeks. Researchers say the results in the first and second study were similar. Here are s...

Typical North American diet is deficient in omega-3 fatty acids
2008-03-10 07:30:00
Child & Family Research Institute release ? New research from the Child & Family Research Institute shows the typical North American diet of eating lots of meat and not much fish is deficient in omega-3 fatty acids and this may pose a risk to infant neurological development. Omega-3 fatty acids are unsaturated fats found in some fish such as salmon and herring and in smaller amounts in eggs and chicken. This discovery is an important step towards developing dietary fat guidelines for pregnant and breastfeeding women. Current dietary recommendations evolved from the 1950?s emphasis on reducing saturated fat intake to lower the risk of cardiovascular disease. The study is published March 7th, 2008 in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. ?Omega 3 fatty acids are important for the baby?s developing eyes and brain,? says Dr. Sheila Innis, the study?s principal investigator, head of the nutrition and metabolism program at the Child & Family Research Institute at BC Chil...
Omega-3 Fatty Acids and Antioxidants-A New Improved Source
2008-02-15 18:57:00
By: George Shears As a result of the ongoing wellness revolution, more and more people are learning that they need to add high quality nutritional supplements to their diet in order to help prevent and reverse a wide array of chronic degenerative diseases. The basic reason for this is very simple--we are genetically programmed to eat only the simple, whole foods that were consumed by our stone-age ancestors. To whatever degree we deviate from this kind of diet, we deprive our bodies of key necessary nutrients and ingest substances that actually cause them harm.Tragically, about 90% of the average American diet now consists of mummified foods that are lacking in the key nutrients we need; even worse, they commonly contain a wide array of ingredients that are either downright toxic or that seriously disrupt the functioning of our bodies in many ways. And even the natural produce we eat--unless it is organic and vine-ripened--is likely to be deficient in many key micro...

Increase cartenoid intake by adding fatty acids
2008-01-31 11:51:00
Fresh and brightly colored vegetables, like the ones you often find in salsa sauce and other exotic salads, are rich in cartenoids. Cartenoids are powerful anti-oxidants which help to decrease your risk of cancer, cardiovascular disease or cataract. To fully enjoys the benefits of the cartenoids you have to combine them with some fat. Scientists of Ohio State University discovered that people who ate a salad that had half an avocado (which is rich in good fats) in it, absorbed 10 times more beta-carotene and lutein than those who ate a salad without avocado. Beta-carotene can be found in carrots and lutein in spinach. Eating avocado with salsa increased the absorption of the lycopene from the tomatoes in the salsa almost fivefold. Fatty acids help the intestines to absorb the cartenoids into your body. Furthermore these fats are an essential part of the lipoprotein that take care of the transport of the cartenoids in the blood. So every time you eat brightly colored vegetables ad...

Healthy Habit No. 2: Add Fish and Omega-3 Fatty Acids to Your Diet
2008-01-19 23:46:00
The AHA recommends a serving of fish two times per week.Besides being a good source of protein and a food relatively low in the bad type of dietary fat called saturated fat, fish has omega-3 fatty acids -- which have been shown to reduce the risk of heart disease.Fatty fish such as mackerel, lake trout, herring, sardines, albacore tuna, and salmon, are rich in two kinds of omega-3 fatty acids: eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).Foods such as tofu, soybeans, canola, walnuts, flaxseed, and their oils contain alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), which convert to omega-3 in the body. Even though the benefits of ALA are controversial, the AHA still recommends foods containing it as part of a healthy diet.In addition to their heart-health benefits, there is some evidence that omega-3 fatty acids may also soothe an overactive immune system, says Johnson. Even though this benefit is still being studied, she says there appears to be a link between getting more omega-3s in your...

Anti-Alzheimer's mechanism in omega-3 fatty acids
2007-12-26 21:16:00
It's good news that we are living longer, but bad news that the longer we live, the better our odds of developing late-onset Alzheimer's disease. Many Alzheimer's researchers have long touted fish oil, by pill or diet, as an accessible and inexpensive "weapon" that may delay or prevent this debilitating disease. Now, UCLA scientists have confirmed that fish oil is indeed a deterrent against Alzheimer's, and they have identified the reasons why. Reporting in the current issue of the Journal of Neuroscience, now online, Greg Cole, professor of medicine and neurology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and associate director of UCLA's Alzheimer Disease Research Center, and his colleagues report that the omega-3 fatty acid docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) found in fish oil increases the production of LR11, a protein that is found at reduced levels in Alzheimer's patients and which is known to destroy the protein that forms the "plaques" associated with the disease. The plaque...

Essential Fatty Acids Decrease Health Risks
2007-09-10 11:28:00
Two kinds of unsaturated fats are necessary for your very survival. These are the essential fatty acids omega-6 (linoleic acid) and omega-3 (linolenic acid). Since your body cannot manufacture these fatty acids, they must be obtained from the foods you eat. Omega-6 is fairly common and is found in most of the vegetable oils sold in the grocery store. I suggest, however, that you try to buy your vegetable oils in health foods stores, if possible. Most typical grocery store oils, which are processed for mass distribution, are often filled with free radicals and bad fats called trans-fatty acids. Omega-3 is found in soy oil, walnut oil, flax oil, and canola oils and in dark green, leafy vegetables. I suggest that you purchase all oils in dark-colored green or amber bottles, since clear bottles tend to make the oils go rancid after a time due to chemical changes caused by exposure to sunlight. It is especially important to make sure that you supplement your food plan with enough omega-3 ...

Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Lower Cholesterol
2007-06-20 11:16:00
Omega-3 fatty acids are polyunsaturated fats found in fish, fish oil, and in the form of supplements. They typically consist of a combination of polyunsaturated fatty acids that include DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid). Polyunsaturated fats, especially EPA and DHA, have a reputation for being heart-friendly fats because they do not promote atherosclerosis associated with causing heart disease. Previous research has shown that individuals consuming omega-3 fatty acids have decreased risk of sudden death from heart disease. Recent research has indicated that it may also lower the risk for heart disease by improving your lipid profile. So, does it help lower triglyceride and cholesterol levels. In order to achieve this amount, one would need to consume a lot of fish. Therefore, supplements are typically used. Ingesting 900 mg of omega-3 fatty acids each day resulted in a 4-percent decrease in triglyceride levels after six months. The average effective dose used...
