Mergers and Acquisitions fall sharply, but PE activity grows
2008-07-15 07:40:00 2007 will go down in history as the year of Mergers & Acquisitions in India. However, 2008 has not kept pace with the momentum gained last year. This year has not been good for India overall, Stock Market today has come down to nearly 12,500 points - a 15 month low -, investors have lost thousands of crores of rupees, the rupee has lost the fight handsomely against the dollar - last 6 months have seen rupee plummet from high of nearly 38.5 to a low of 42.75 against the dollar, real estate which grew at astonishing pace last year has seen tremendous slowdown. Inflation, which was hovering at less than 4% last year has nearly tripled to 11.5%. The total number of Merger & Acquisition deals too have seen huge negative growth. During the first six months of 2008 total M&A deals stand at 265 with value at $18.54 billion as against 335 deals amounting to $ 43.97 billion in the corresponding period in 2007.

Microsoft bullying Yahoo : Ready to talk only with new board
2008-07-08 07:54:00 Did you think Microsoft- Yahoo deal was over? Far from it. It is now looking like a bollywood drama. Microsoft now says that if the current yahoo bosses go away and the new board comes in, it is ready to re-enter the negotiations ! Michael Arrington of Techcrunch has written about it in detail and is not too happy with the way Microsoft is bullying Yahoo ? just because it is now in a position to do that. Yesterday Microsoft released a statement clearly mentioning that it is not interested in talking with the current management and do not trust that they can take this forward.
NBC?s Acquisition Of The Weather Channel Likely To Anger Founder

He’s the original founder of the Weather Channel that wants to sue Al Gore for bringing climate change front and center — something he perceives as a hoax on the grandest of levels. He’s also disgruntled because the network he built is pushing the environmental agenda with green-themed reports and series. “They’re ...

Will Ortiz Injury Lead To Acquisition?
2008-06-03 01:21:00 11:21pm: Terry Francona says surgery for Ortiz is "very unlikely." 9:28pm: Bad news for the Red Sox - DH David Ortiz will miss a significant chunk of the season with his wrist injury. There's even a chance Ortiz could need season-ending surgery. An open DH spot in Boston is sure to light up the rumor mill. Keep in mind, though, that the Sox could fill the vacancy internally. For example, Manny Ramirez could DH and Brandon Moss could play left. Plenty of bats are out there if Theo Epstein does look for outside help. The following players may be available: Barry Bonds, Adam Dunn, Jason Bay, Xavier Nady, Brian Giles, Raul Ibanez, and Milton Bradley.

2008-05-26 16:24:00 photo: cindiann Warning! What I am about to share with you might not be something you want to hear. But it’s definitely something that you need to hear… Majority of the people are spending thousands and thousands of dollars investing in seminars, books, audio CDs that they think, will help them. Here’s the shocker… About 90% of these people never complete reading the books or listening to the audio CDs that they buy. Wow…! You know, many people do not realize this. The moment they find a book they think will benefit them, they will purchase it, thinking of it as an ‘investment’. No harm in that thinking, right? Right, but not all the time. Why? After they purchase the book, they will only be motivated enough to complete the first few chapters, or at best, half of it. Then the excitement dies down… And the ‘information acquisition frenzy’ starts all over again. They visit a bookstore, find a book that really interest...

Indians Prefer Infield Acquisition?
2008-05-17 02:48:00 Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer believes the Indians' preference to be to acquire an infielder, if they are to explore the trade market. If so, they might pass on discussing potentially available outfielders such as Ken Griffey Jr., Adam Dunn, and Jason Bay. However, Hoynes notes the Indians' past interest in Dunn. Hoynes believes the Brian Roberts rumblings could resurface, perhaps a month or two from now. Peter Gammons suggested in April that the Orioles' decent start might cause Peter Angelos to mandate retention of Roberts. Some other possibly available infielders: Garrett Atkins, Nick Johnson (perhaps six weeks from now), Aubrey Huff, Mark Grudzielanek, Jose Castillo, Cristian Guzman, Felipe Lopez, Melvin Mora, Chad Tracy, and Mark Ellis (once he recovers from a strained hamstring). It seems easier to acquire an impact outfielder. Regardless, Hoynes believes the Indians would use their starting pitching surplus to engineer a trade.

SC asks Tata, WB govt to file reply on Singur land acquisition
2008-05-13 19:23:00 The Supreme Court on Tuesday sought reply from Tata Motors, the West Bengal government and others as to why ‘fertile multi-crop agricultural land’ was acquired for the company’s small-car project at Singur. A bench headed by Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan while issuing notice to the company, the state government and the West Bengal State Industrial Development Corporation (WBSIDC) posted the matter for further hearing in July. The petition filed by Kedar Nath Yadav, a practicing lawyer, while seeking immediate halt of the Nano car project had challenged the Calcutta High Court’s decision that upheld as legal the acquisition of land by the West Bengal government for the Nano project. The acquisition of fertile multi-crop agricultural land by the government in various parts of the state for Tata Motors’ upcoming project, for Indonesia’s Salim Group in Haldia and the Reliance group, was violative of farmers’ rights guaranteed by the Constitutio...

Thoughts on Language Acquisition
2008-05-10 13:46:00 I was talking to someone the other day (I forget who), and this individual brought up the fact that Condoleeza Rice?s Russian is ?so bad.? This person thought it was reprehensible that someone who studied Russian in university spoke the language so poorly. But the thing is, I completely understand. In order to maintain one?s foreign language abilities, one must constantly practice and study. I received my BA in Russian in 2001. At that time, my spoken Russian, while not fluent, was pretty damn good. However, from Summer 2001 to Summer 2005, I neither practiced nor studied Russian. Additionally, during that time I made two extensive trips to South Korea, traveled all over Costa Rica, and lived in Southern California within walking distance of the Mexican border. By the time I returned to Russia in August 2005, my Russian skills had greatly diminished; I spoke something I referred to as Spanglorusskikonglish.I was in Russia from August 2005 through June 2006, during which time my Russi...

The Ferengi Rules of Acquisition
2008-05-10 01:01:00 Don't forget to enter the draw for the 2008 KPMG Tax Planning book. Click here to enter. In highschool and university I was a trekkie. Not a defcon-5 kinda trekkie who actually made it out to a convention, but I was a fan. One of the fictional races in the Star Trek universe was the Ferengi who were known as being mega-capitalists more than anything else - their government and religion was based around "profit", and they all lived and died by "The Ferengi Rules Of Acquisition". I thought I would share some of the 285 rules with you. The ones here are pretty good and might be transferable to the real world:#8. Small print leads to large risk.#9. Opportunity plus instinct equals profit.#34. War is good for business.#35. Peace is good for business.#48. The bigger the smile, the sharper the knife.#59. Free advice is seldom cheap.#125. You can't make a deal if you're dead.#141. Only fools pay retail.#194. It's always good business to know about your customers...
Rockies Not Planning Starter Acquisition
2008-05-09 12:35:00 FRIDAY: Rockies owner Dick Monfort says the Rockies aren't looking to acquire a starter at this time. As of yesterday Rob Bradford of the Boston Herald said the Rox remained interested in Tavarez but that no advancements had been made. THURSDAY: On Tuesday we found out that the Rockies have been looking into a number of trade options for their starting rotation. The two most common names in the conversation are Josh Fogg and Julian Tavarez, both former Rox. Fogg has given up over a run an inning for the last place Reds, and could be DFA if the team opts to go with youngster Homer Bailey, who has a 2.72 ERA in AAA. Tavarez might be expendable for the Sox, though that would mean depending on David Aardsma. Today, Jack Etkin of the Rocky Mountain News tells us that the Rox have inquired on Cardinals pitcher Anthony Reyes. We've heard the rumor that the Cardinals are shopping the former USC star, though they are looking for "an upper echelon prospect back, plus another piece." ...

Data Acquisition Using INS8048
2008-05-07 11:36:00 This application note describes techniques for interfacing National Semiconductor's ADC0833 serial I/O, and ADC0804 parallel I/O A/D converters to the INS8048 family of microprocessors. A hardware and software interface example is provided for each A/D, along with a brief theory of operation.Since the INS8048 series microprocessors are single-chip, multiple I/O line, high speed devices designed as efficient controllers, the capacity to interface with analog peripherals is obvious. That the conversion be fast, inexpensive and easily expanded to accommodate a number of I/O devices is desirable. The INS8048 is a self-contained, 8-bit processor in a 40-pin dual-in-line package. It contains its own system timing, control logic and memory. All parts contain RAM (64, 128, 256 bytes) and offer the option of on-board ROM (1k, 2k, 4k depending on part). It provides extensive bit-handling capabilities, 97 instructions, and offers easy expansion for I/O and memory. The ADC0833 A/D converter is ...

Wall Street Journal: Yahoo and Google May Become Search Bedfellows
2008-04-18 20:45:00 The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Yahoo and Google are closer than ever to a deal where Yahoo would outsource their search monetization to Google. Google continues to do a much better job of producing revenue from searches - some estimates suggest that Google gets more than twice Yahoo's revenue per search click.Yahoo also is continuing to negotiate with AOL as part of Yahoo's efforts to stave off a takeover by Microsoft. The Journal suggests that Yahoo's April 22 earnings report may play a key role in the Microsoft takeover argument. If Yahoo comes in with strong earnings it will strengthen the idea that the Microsoft bid is too low, but if earnings are weak it will support Microsoft's efforts to force a Yahoo merger against the will of the current Yahoo board.Source:WebguildRead more on SEO at SEO Consultant India Blog
Wanted: a Good Condo Acquisition Plan
2008-04-17 09:32:00 My cousin who’s a nurse, working on a foreign and European traveling luxury liner for over five years now is excited about the idea of buying her first real estate property here in the Metro. Initially, three years ago, she’s had the chance to buy her 2 hectare farm land in the province. The land is now fully paid and her cash crops are earning her well, thank you. Her plan is to buy a condominium property as soon as possible. She was able to inspect and evaluate the unit the last time she was here while on her annual vacation. She loved the property’s location and “looks like” she “could afford it”. It’s a good investment to prepare for her “daughter’s schooling accommodations when the time comes”. According to her, her current financial picture is: she has enough money in savings and time deposits. She also has a life insurance which is on its fifth year of payments. Her available cash is more than enough to buy the property in cash, plus the rest of the pr...

Future of Rupee against Dollar?
2008-04-10 09:26:00 Last year around June I had written about the dollar plunge against the Rupee. For all the Indians living in U.S, it was one of the most concerning aspect as any remittances to India were nearly 15% lower. Most of them were expecting Rupee to keep on appreciating and break even the 35 Rupee mark against the dollar. Till December of last year that trend remained intact, however 2008 seems to have taken a sudden U turn. After a gap of more than a year Rupee has depreciated to over 40 against the dollar, much to everyone's surprise. Although it has been range-bound for last month or so, no one seems to be talking about 35 Rupee mark that was expected to hit as per most of the analysts. |
